This Rural Bolthole Near Edinburgh Is Scotland’s Most Charming New Stay | Vogue

"At the heart of the estate, the majestic building known as Old Penicuik House stands as a restored ruin, with enormous open ceilings and empty windows you can peer through to the crumbling interior or to the arcadian landscapes beyond. Arriving in early January, a layer of fresh snow glittered on every tree and blanketed every surface, lending the place an eerie hush that made the short journey from a sterile arrivals hall feel like stepping into Narnia." - Liam Hess

We have not long got back from 5 nights at Clermount House and 2 nights in Westlin cottage: both were stunning and immaculately clean. The grounds and landscaping is incredible and so peaceful, hot tubs were divine and kept cleaned daily; we were very grateful to be shown the main 16 bedroom house by James. We can’t wait to come back for another stay in December. Amazing that it is dog friendly too. Thank you !!

This is a nice place for a relaxing walk, the leaves are changing colors which makes it even more beautiful. Green fields with sheep, forest and a pond, are surrounding the Old Penicuik House. The wildflower field in front of the house makes a perfect photo spot. Past the house there's a path that leads to the pond and more trails, if you have time.

The House has not been open to the public since Covid. However, the gardens are stunning and a walk beside the river and surrounding estate is lovely. Would recommend. A fairy garden is worth a visit.

Free parking or park in Penicuik and walk along Carlops road. Lovely walks and you'll maybe even see buzzards, deer and highland cows.

Beautiful House. Learning a little if its history and surrounding paper mills. Reminded me of Pride and Predjudice. Great walk for most abilities.

Had a lovely walk about this gem today. Still amazes me how many lovely places there are just outside Edinburgh. Didn't know this place existed. Good old Google maps! It's free to walk about but it's a working farm so if you are walking your dog be respectful of that. Lovely place for walks. Car park is a short walk but the roads are good so wheelchair access is good. A must visit.

We have just spent 3 glorious nights on the Penicuik Estate. Our Gatehouse was the ultimate in Country Chic with every aspect being quite perfect for a comfortable break. Each day we walked the well laid out and interesting paths around the Estate admiring it from all directions. It was a thoroughly special experience in a wonderful place which we greatly recommend!

Absolutely top class. We stayed in one of the cottages for three nights and could easily have moved in right away. What particularly pleased me, apart from the extremely tasteful furnishings and the feel-good factor, were the materials used. From the bathroom fittings and kitchen appliances to the lawnmower and bed linen, everything is simply top class. Everything works perfectly. Thomas and the entire team do an impeccable job, and thanks to the charm and effort of everyone involved, the accommodation can compete with many top hotels. We would return anytime.
