Where in the World Is Saint Valentine?

"Built in 1821, the Old St. Ferdinand Shrine has more than just a long history of prayer. In addition to being the oldest extant Catholic church between the Rocky Mountains and Mississippi River, the building holds within its walls a significant piece of historical importance. The story of Valentines Day is a romantic yet convoluted one that involves the patron of lovers known as St. Valentine who helped early Christian couples to marry in secret. Though it is difficult to say who exactly St. Valentines actually is, his history has been preserved not only through the national holiday of Valentines Day, but also in the few relics that are scattered all around the world to commemorate him. One of these rare relics can be found right inside the Old St. Ferdinand Church. The Old St. Ferdinand Shrine on its own is an incredible sight to see, with outstanding design and beautiful models of old buildings. The buildings of the Old St. Ferdinand Shrine have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of their collection of irreplaceable historical artifacts. In front of the altar is a wax replica of St. Valentine in front of the altar—and inside this life-like effigy is, allegedly, one of the relics of St. Valentine, given to Bishop Louis DuBourg by the King of France." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

The Shrine of St. Ferdinand in Old Town Florissant is the most holy site I’ve ever visited. There’s a deep sense of peace and reverence the moment you step onto the grounds. I’ve attended Mass there several times, as well as Catholic Men’s Nights, and each experience has been profoundly moving. The history, the beauty of the church, and the quiet strength of the community all contribute to making this a truly special place. Whether you’re there for worship, reflection, or simply to experience its spiritual significance, the shrine offers something rare and deeply meaningful. I can’t recommend it enough.

The Church was founded 1820. The building you see was built in 1821. Every spring the grounds host the Valley of Flowers Festival. With a phone call you can visit and quietly pray beneath the stairs where St Rose Phillipine Duchesne slept. A beautifully kept frontier shrine for all seeking solace and a few quiet moments meditation with the Sacred Heart of Yashewah.

Beautiful shrine. St Rose Philippine Duchesne and Fr De Smet lived and worked here in the 1800s.

Catholic or not this is an incredible spot. Amazing to find such a slice of American frontier history that is full of artifacts surrounded by urban St Louis. Nothing phony or disneyfied here. The story of St Rose Phillipine Duschense, her religious devotion and life on what was then day to day life on the unsettled prairie is beautifully interpreted through authentic artifacts, thoughtfully displayed. Folks will appreciate how beautiful and sophisticated the french colonial. architecture is. Free will donation - highly recommended!

The Shrine has been repaired since the July 2022 flood. Much needed work remains to be done. Two restored windows are very colorful.

This little church and school is an amazing showing of what love and devotion can bring to a community. Taking a look back in this to really appreciate what our society has accomplished is really humbling. And seeing how much work goes into maintaining this piece of history is awesome. If you have some time, it's a wonderful place to visit

Yelp
Beautiful early settlers church. So well maintained! Retained much of the essence of the early building.
