Yelp
We were looking for a spot to stay in Niagara Falls for our first anniversary, and I was really excited about this boutique hotel. I love supporting smaller, boutique hotels, and Old Stone Inn appeared quaint, romantic and adorable from the website. The updates that they've made looked great as well.
Upon arrival, the lobby and dining room appeared as they did on the website -- vintage with a modern flair, and fun yet romantic. The front desk staff was friendly and welcoming. Sadly, we found out that they were hosting a wedding there that evening so the entire restaurant was being shut down if you hadn't made reservations in advance. Downside to a smaller hotel I suppose. They weren't even serving desserts or smaller plates -- it was completely closed to everyone else. Had we known about this in advance, we could've planned for it. A big part of why we stayed here is because we wanted to try their restaurant.
Luckily, we found a market nearby to buy some food and had a picnic instead in their open courtyard. That was a nice escape from the Niagara Falls tourists and bustle.
Going to our room, the hallway smelled like mildew, which was a unpleasant and adding to our disappointments thus far. Our room was nice with (what looked like) a new bathroom and nice king size bed. Then it continued to go downhill. It could be that they haven't finished the renovations and updates throughout the hotel, but they had an entertainment center that the TV didn't fit in. Meaning when you opened the doors to expose the TV, we couldn't push the doors back because the TV took up the entire width. This made it awkward to walk around. I realize this is a minor flaw, but, again, just added to the negatives we kept experiencing.
The most upsetting part is that another main reason we choose Old Stone Inn was for the fireplace in our room. Being our first anniversary, we wanted a romantic setting, and knew it would be cool enough at night to utilize a fireplace. From the photos, they look like legit gas fireplaces with actual flames. Well, you'd be mistaken too because the "fireplace" is an electric heater with LIGHTS that resemble flames (and not even realistically, more like a nightlight). We would not have paid more for a room with a fireplace if we knew that this was their idea of one.
Perhaps if this wasn't a special trip for us, and we didn't have high expectations, we would've enjoyed our stay more. I recommend staying in Niagara-on-the-Lake instead -- less touristy and closer to all of the vineyards and actual good restaurants.
