On the Grid : Queen West Antique Centre

"Their focus on mid-century furniture in excellent condition sets the Queen West Antique Centre apart, and as you walk past the displays of retro living rooms and dining rooms, it can feel like a step backward into the past. Keep your eyes open for rare Herman Miller, Hans Olson, Pierre Paulin, Eames and Arne Jacobsen pieces." - Format

What initially seemed like a charming little antique shop turned out to be a stressful experience. The store is full of interesting and unique pieces, but the atmosphere created by the owner was tense and unwelcoming. While I understand the need to protect fragile items, the approach made it difficult to browse comfortably. Sadly, I left feeling more pressured than inspired. It’s unfortunate, because without that atmosphere, I believe this shop could be a real treasure.

Stopped by this shop twice this month in search of antique pictures for my apartment and some western style jewelry for a trip I'm taking to Nashville. Both times I've found great items and the owner was polite and helpful. I would take your time and look carefully if you can because there are a lot of treasures around each corner. The owner even gave me a small deal for the belt buckle! I would recommend asking for help if you feel you can't see or try on something because it's pinned or tied up on display. Also note, the prices aren't as low as a thrift store but better value for unique pieces.

I am so glad I visited this store despite the reviews, it is such a gem and the lady working there was very kind! There are many wonderful finds inside, I picked up some beautiful jewelry and a little trinket box! It has quickly become one of my favourite stores, and I can’t wait to return! I believe many of the negative reviews came from people who were likely disruptive or not mindful of the space; as long as you are respectful, you will have a wonderful experience at this store. I’ll definitely be back, the collection inside is truly amazing! 🥰

If you’re considering not going here because of all the negative reviews please reconsider! First time I’ve written a review for a place but I kind of had to because this antique shop is like a world of its own. A bit like Howl’s bedroom from the movie Howl’s moving castle. I cannot overstate this: you can really feel the owner’s love for her store and collection if you stick around long enough to see her interact with a few customers. Funny story but I was looking to buy a ring and she has so much of literally everything that I was hunched over the display cases for a quite a while as she tended to multiple customers. The rings are on the upper floor of the store near the cash register so she did ask me to step down while she helped others in the area find what they were looking for but it made complete sense given how limited space in the store is. I’m going to level with anyone reading this: the owner of this shop is indeed intimidating but in no way is she rude or unreasonable. She does not appreciate people taking photos or hagglers and there are clear signs indicating this at the front of the store. If you respect her store and merchandise, the owner brightens up and is more than happy to help her customers find something special. Once I finally decided what rings I was interested in she was a great help and patient with finding the right sizing for me. I ended up leaving with the most lovely ring I’ve ever laid my eyes on for a steal of a price.

I’m a newcomer to Toronto. Been here for about a month. Immediately got yelled at for taking pictures when walking in (no signs posted saying pictures are not allowed…) the owner said her partner is against pictures being taken. Okay. I tell her that her store is absolutely gorgeous and it must have taken a long time to curate. As a jewelry creator, I understand how much love she has put into her store. This store is absolutely whimsical, but the owner is very callous and cold and comes across as quite obstructive. I came here with a friend of mine and the owner immediately started asking us if we needed anything or any help when we started inspecting items, as if we were being rushed. The reviews don’t lie— it’s beautiful here, but the owner is the worst.

I really do usually give people the benefit of the doubt. And I NEVER write reviews but I had to for this store. On the outside this store looks so charming and even the eminside (despite how cramped it is) is beautiful. But the owner is jusy AWFUL. I spent $50 at this store and the servive wss still awful, she asks if you need help in tbe mosy unwelcoming way, as if shes trying fi gayge if youre trying to steal, which i understand but she makes you feel unwelcome why open a store that sells expensive things if you just drive away the customers? Even after I purchased $50 of stuff she just coldly said “is that all?” And trying to rush me out of the store. Looking back I wish I hadn’t given my money to her you can definitely find better places with similar vibes, trust me. I looked at the store reviews to see if it was just me but she’s like that with everyone, apparently.

Please improve your customer service. I was really excited to visit this store for the first time, but now I understand why the reviews are so low. The owner of the store closed the top half of the store and seemed to be rushing us. It’s disappointing since all the items were lovely, but the customer service was cold and unwelcoming.

I think that after going to the store, my impression of it changed because of the negative comments I had seen online. I think the owner is a really fine and interesting lady, and she really has passion and love for her collections. There are a lot of really small and interesting stuff, and I had a really fun experience.

Yelp
Old Times Antiques is a very small space that is neatly piled high with lots of small pieces ranging from lamps to paintings to collectible bric-a brac. There are lots of interesting things here. The key is not to be overwhelmed by the amount of product in such a small space.

Yelp
While the merchandise may be fascinating, I have NEVER experienced such APPALLING customer service. While looking at the jewelry, my friend and I were abruptly escorted out of the store without any explanation, and that woman working chained the door closed behind us. When returning minutes later saying that we actually were interested in purchasing the necklaces that we were so RUDELY shoved away from, we were let back in for "5 minutes". During this time I attempted to make small talk with they employe, but was bombarded with statements such as "You are asking too many personal questions! 'How much money do I make?', 'Where do I come from?' I can't answer those!" - even though NONE of those questions were asked during this small talk. In the end, we bought our necklaces and left, shocked by this ungodly treatment. When talking to business owners afterwards who said that they regularly AVOID "Old Times Antiques", we wished that we had done the same. - Sincerely the customer who's day you ruined THANKS FOR THE SERVICE (If I could've put zero starts, that would've been my rating)

Yelp
I regret having stepped in the store as I had the most unpleasant and horrible experience. The shopkeeper was not only impolite, and unfriendly but also unethical as she further lied about an item and sold me a fake at the price of an original. She certainly makes a good effort to strip the customer out of their humanity and dignity. It's a surprise that the store has not gone out of business with the poor quality of merchandise and service. She shouldn't be in this business.

Yelp
had a great time here with my family. Found a ton of things that I loved and purchased. The store owner and employee are always so helpful and knowledgeable with all of the products being sold. If you're impatient this is not the store for you. They can't assist every single individual 100% of the time but if you're willing to wait then I definitely recommend! Be mindful that it is a small store with fragile items so definitely ask for help when shopping
