The Best Restaurants and Cafes in Portland’s Old Town-Chinatown | Eater Portland

"Portland has become a pizza town over the years, but before locals were topping pies with burrata or ‘nduja, Old Town Pizza was there with its house special — pepperoni, salami, Italian sausage, mushroom, black olives, and bell pepper. An Old Town staple for over 50 years since its opening in 1974, the two-story restaurant in a historic building has since expanded across the river and added a taproom, so diners can pair barbecue chicken pizza with flagship brews like IPAs and pilsners or seasonal specialties like the mushroom ale. The limited-run Shanghai’d IPA and alfredo sauce Ghost Pie both allude to the site’s location above Portland’s Shanghai tunnels, which are said to be haunted. Guided tunnel tours are available, which conclude with a beer tasting." - Zoe Baillargeon

The Best Haunted and Spooky Bars and Restaurants in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Perhaps the city’s best-known haunted locale, this Northwest Davis brewery has long been featured in tours of Old Town’s underground pathways, which involve post-tour beer tastings. The brewery, which sits in the former lobby of the 19th-century Merchant Hotel, is allegedly home to a ghost named Nina, donning a black dress and spotted wandering the basement’s halls. Book a tour and tasting online." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

The Oldest Restaurants in Portland | Eater Portland

"Old Town Pizza has stood in Old Town Portland since the Accuardi family opened it in 1974. The menu sticks to classics like garlic knots, salad, and pizza, and the more contemporary edition: beer. However, it’s also a destination for the historic tunnels it was built over. The restaurant offers tours of the underground space, complete with a pint." - Rebecca Roland

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We came for the pizza… stayed for the ghost. 👻🍕 Old Town Pizza is a total vibe—historic, cozy, and delicious! We were lucky enough to sit in Nina’s booth, where the legendary ghost herself is said to hang out. The atmosphere was spooky in the best way, and the staff made the whole experience even more fun! The pizza? 🔥 Chef’s kiss. Fresh ingredients, perfect crust, and the garlic knots were next-level. If you’re visiting Portland and love a good combo of history, haunted legends, and amazing food—this place is a must. Ask to sit in Nina’s booth for the full haunted experience… if you dare. 😏🕯️ #OldTownPizza #PortlandEats #HauntedDining #NinasBooth #PizzaAndGhosts#TheHeartofMortgage

Google
We found this amazing place by happenstance, with time to kill waiting for a train to Seattle. First off, this is easily the best pizza in PDX. It passes muster with this New Yorker pizza snob, which is no small praise. Second, the beer is amazing. Third, we had no idea about the tour, and decided to come back for it solely on the basis of the butthurt one-star reviews. I’ll leave it to the reader to decide if they see any ghosts, what I saw was an amazing history tour of a great American city, parts of Portland you don’t normally get to see, and one of the best tour guides ever (Natasha). This is the third time we’ve been here in as many weeks and it has rapidly become one of our absolutely favorite haunts in the metro and #1 in Old Town. Come here, eat the pizza, drink the beer, and do the tour. You won’t regret it.

Google
Fred and I had such a good time! They had and awesome, friendly vibe. The tap girl was very knowledgeable, and very attentive. The cooks in the back make an incredible pizza. And they even took pictures with Fred! Super cool place. A great building for pictures and viewing all the brewing tanks and ingredients at large! Fred and I will be returning for some of the best pizza we’ve had so far! Keep up the good work !!

Google
Old Town Pizza and Brewing has a cool vibe, and we were excited to take the tour into the tunnels. The host put in a good effort to make it fun, but overall, it felt dull. It might be more interesting for someone who’s never seen a crawl space, but it didn’t quite live up to the hype for us. Haven't got a chance to try the pizza 🍕, the beer was whatever

Google
Nina and I were there last night, making it our third time going on the tour with Natasha. Who by the way was great, we love her energy and enthusiasm. Safety is clearly important to her, not just routine. She is very full of knowledge and she really made the tour exciting and enjoyable. Without Natasha the tour would be boring. We even found Nina’s name scratched in the brick wall this time. And of course the pizza and beer afterwards was delicious as always. Thank you for a wonderful night out! Sincerely, Jeremy & Nina

Google
Sat in the very back room (former elevevator shaft) where it is said to be haunted. Definitely felt the presence of Nina - the resident ghost and my pic shows an orb right below my eye. These orbs usually pop up when I have ghosties around and am doing Paranormal Investigations. The famous Shanghai tunnels are right below the parlor and the tour can be booked separately.💜😇 Ordered a Build your own Pizza and it was Fabulous! Great cheese pull and lots of veggies! Would definitely recommend to come by and grab a slice and say Hi to the residents still here from beyond the veil!

Google
I mean it’s Old Town Pizza. They use wooden oven made pizza. If you want by slices you must come in person. It’s New York style pizza. The only pizza I will have anytime time I crave it. It’s FCKNG Old Town Pizza man🤭🤣👌🏼

Google
First I really having a tough time between 4 and 5 stars. The you lady that gave us a tour of the tunnels was awesome there beer was good. Then let's talk about the food I am sorry to say it's basically bar pizza when it's a pizza place. Very grease very very grease. The size was fine but I don't like it when they burn not a little burn my crust. It's very thin and I was observing the kitchen staff let's just say it didn't seem like they were concerned about cooking pizzas anyways maybe it was a bad night who knows but I really liked this place and want to give them the benefit of doubt and just think it's a bad night . The main reason was due to service and the tour especially the tour. If I could sat anything bad about the tour is the area shown is basically the pizza place basement so thank God thar young lady was very knowledgeable and fun. She deserves a bigger platform what I mean by that is she knew a lot about the subject and she should be able to show more tunnels and it's history. So in the end the price isn't bad the beer is beer the food is OK and the tour is good so give it a shot and let's hope they are all having a good night.

Paul K.

Yelp
really good pizza. The lady was really sweet. He was cooking the pizza. I'll definitely come back.

Yelp
This place is cool. Old-school looking the pizza is absolutely amazing solid 8.4. The little bar there is pretty darn good drinks are great free refills on soda and the ranch is absolutely to die for super good. We will be back.

Yelp
I been trying to come here for a while and I finally made it. The atmosphere was awesome but if it's too packed getting tables is hard especially for groups. They also have cocktail drinks and awesome beers on tap. I ordered a pepperoni whole pie and it was delicious. I had ordered a Margherita but they had ran out of some of the ingredients so I just got a cheese pizza. Overall, great place with an awesome history. Definitely will do the haunted tour next time.

Yelp
This review is for the Shanghai Tunnel tour. We enjoyed the tour and learned a lot about Portland's dark past. The actual tunnel area (basement) is dark and dusty which is perfect for all fans of the supernatural. I don't recommend this tour if you're not a fan of dark and small spaces. Doug was our fantastic guide!
google avatar

Bridget J.

Yelp
First and foremost, their pizza is pretty good and every staff member I spoke with was friendly. Glad I tried the food as I initially only came in for their underground tunnel tour. In terms of the Shanghai tunnel tours, our tour guide was Natasha and she was stellar. Knowledgable, informative, witty, and put the fun in dysfunctional (as she said). Natasha honestly made the tour, I doubt it would've been as good with a different guide. History of the tunnels themselves was fascinating and I wish the system was still preserved on a large scale. Since Natasha said not to share creepy photos during the tour, I figured I'd drop it here for y'all to see. Left side of bar you can see something...spooky
google avatar

Diana J.

Yelp
Came here for the ghost tunnel tour. Natasha was a great guide. I learned about portlands dark history that I never knew about. After the tour we got a pizza. I really liked the crust on this pizza, it was crispy and chewy like a breadstick. The Caesar salad was ok. Not that great tho. Would recommend this little tour and the pizzas!
google avatar

Yelp
Very nice Veggie GF pizza. The guy who brought out the pizza was great. You can tell these guys are good at what they do. They are busy so it's takes a little while to get helped at the counter but worth the wait. The pizza came out fast. Also, you have to order pizza at one place and drinks (alcohol) at the other, just fyi so the line gets a bit mixed up. Just missed the happy hour (ended at 5:30) but it appears to be a full bar. Very cool old building.
google avatar

Nicole W.

Yelp
Had a wonderful time visiting Portland for the first time, eating some fresh pizza, exploring the tunnels and enjoying delicious lager! A unique way to learn about Portland's racier side! Natasha was a fantastic, entertaining historian. Highly recommend the tunnel tour and making time for a slice beforehand!

Yelp
More like 3.7. I love the history of the place. Our Pizza and cheese bread were lacking flavor. Bathroom is so dark I could barely see anything. Cool layout, friendly staff, good service. We were at Saturday market but the lines for the food carts were too long, so we popped in here.
google avatar

Nicole Y.

Yelp
We dined at Old Town Pizza & brewing after our tour of the Shanghai tunnels. This restaurant is built directly above the Shanghai tunnels and maintains nostalgia of the merchant hotel. We happily enjoyed: Meat lovers pizza Garlic knots And of course a few pints of the legend of Portland. Great service and delicious food, I'm a fan!
google avatar

Jason N.

Yelp
I came here on a work trip for a group dinner. All the pizzas I tried tasted great. The crust was awesome. They also have a very nice beer selection. I had various locally brewed IPAs. The whole place is very old school. This is a great spot for a small to medium size amount of people. Do know that this part of town has issues with homelessness. I didn't factor that in the rating.

Yelp
We were here for the haunted tour but came early to get food. There's plenty of seating for groups and small tables for date night. The pizza slices are giant and the pepperoni slices we got were perfect. The pepperoni slices were generous, crispy little cups and the crust was actually very tasty. I don't normally eat the crust on pizza but the dough they use here is very tasty, slightly fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. The service was excellent. There's one window you order food from and you get drinks at the bar. My favorite beer of the night was the seasonal beer with hints of clove and nutmeg. Overall a fun place to spend a night out. I highly recommend their haunted tour, will write a separate review for that.

Yelp
Excellent pizza and customer service! Shanghai ghost tour was fantasti! Tour operato was amazing!!!

Yelp
What an absolute gem! We loved this place so much. We got the Ghost Pie and a round of the Shanghai'd beer. So yummy. I mean, this really might be the best pizza I've ever had. Loved the seating and the moody lights and the bartender was so nice and helpful. We loved it! We will be back next time we visit Portland!
google avatar

Julie W.

Yelp
The pizza was AMAZING! My husband and BIL loved the beer. We did the Shanghai Tunnel tour and we learned so much.
google avatar

Yelp
Loved the pizza. We had the bbq and the house special. Both were great. Garlic knots were good too.

Yelp
Whether you're a Portland local or just visiting, the Shanghai Tunnels tour is not to be missed! I grew up here but have always wanted to take the tour, and I'm so glad my partner and I decided to just go for it on a random Sunday afternoon. The tour was fun, informative and, yes, a little spooky! Our guide was fantastic and a great storyteller, and the tour included a beer tasting and pint at the end. The pizza is also genuinely amazing! Don't miss out on this frighteningly fun (and delicious!) experience, quintessential Portland!

Yelp
Had a blast w the haunted tunnels tour! Highly Recommend. Would totally do this again

Yelp
Pizza 10/10 nice and thin , not a lot of crazy thick sauce perfectly portioned , had the pepperoni and it was sooooooooo gooooood , the all meats was so good with Alfredo sauce , def recommend . And the ambience is definitely cool , and historic
google avatar

Joe G.

Yelp
Great pizza, ambiance, and service. My only criticism is that they don't have stout beer.
google avatar

Quang D.

Yelp
Great pizza :) Great company :) Great service :) Great beer :) Phenomenal ambiance!! The vibes in here were great, and we loved the rich history and culture it has to offer :)

Rachel L.

Yelp
We did the haunted underground tunnel tour and had the BEST time! Beer tastings included. The ambiance is top notch and the beer is really good. 10/10 recommend and I'm glad we took the couple hours to do it. So worth it!

Yelp
Good food and nice building We really enjoyed it It had a great ambience Here are more characters so I can finish writing this review

Yelp
Loved the Shanghai tour and our guide. Beer and pizza were delicious and the Sunday bartender made us feel welcome. Definitely some of the best pizza in Portland!
google avatar

Yelp
for the tunnels: our host, natasha, was fun, funny, personable and knowledgeable. it was pretty cool and mildly creepy being down there and learning about portland's... interesting... past. recommended for history and paranormal buffs. plus beer!
google avatar

Tom M.

Yelp
So verrry cool !! Lots of history- been there nearly 50 years. Eclectic inside and yes, it's got tunnels and ghosts (??!!). Pizza was delicious and the people are just the best. Really enjoyed this place and should definitely be supported.
google avatar

Yelp
Came across this gem staying at a hotel nearby. The staff was so fun and friendly, and the pizza was incredibly. We got one of their specialty pizzas, a ceasar salad and garlic knots, all of it was so flavorful and delicious. We started with cocktails and then tried a few of their beers which were delicious. Big space with upstairs dining and different areas you can tuck into for more intimate dining but all in all the ambiance is great. And that's just the restaurant. I happened to see haunted tunnel tours on their website and got lucky enough that their were 2 spots left for us!! A must experience. The building above and below is stunning. Cant wait to see what they do with the space they recently acquired!!!!
google avatar

Abby F.

Yelp
Pizza was excellent as was the cheesy bread. Vibe is a bit strange, but I think that's what they're going for. Bathroom creepy AF. Would give it five stars but the bathroom is legitimately terrifying especially if there's people walking up the stairs while you're in it.

Yelp
We booked a tour of the Shanghai tunnels shortly after moving to the area, to help understand the history better of our new city. Natasha was an awesome guide and had so much history to share about the city, the area, the tunnels, and just her love of researching weird and wonderful topics. (Make sure you ask her for book recommendations - or the best places in the city to have some spooky fun!) The beer was also delicious - I'm not normally a big drinker, but the Red Ale was delicious enough that we took a couple of tall boys home with us. We also ate a couple of slices of cheese pizza once the tour was over, and I have to say - as a New Englander who used to live in close proximity to both NYC and New Haven, this pizza was surprisingly delicious! The crust was crispy, the cheese was gooey, and the slice was bigger than I expected - not quite "jumbo-slice" sized, but still enough to hold me over for a few hours! Overall, I'd recommend the tour, the libations, and the food - it was a great way for some new Portland residents to enjoy a Friday evening!

Alexa C.

Yelp
Ate and had a beer here after a tour of the underground tunnels. I love how old and historical the restaurant is. Its a very unique environment to eat in. also the pizza was very good, came out quick. I had the NW IPA and that was good as well! Staff was very nice and friendly.
google avatar

Matt S.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my time here. I came here with a friend specifically for the haunted tunnel tour. I thought the tour was just okay. It was very dark (duh) but to me there just wasn't a whole lot to see. The tour guide was fantastic and provided a lot of insight, information, and history. Anyway, I digress. Old Town is fun! It's actually a pretty big space. I thought the food and the beer were both fantastic. We started with some garlic knots. They were tasty although I wish the marinara dipping sauce was warm and not cold. We went nontraditional on the pie ordering the Ghost Pie consisting of grilled chicken, mushrooms, onions, peppers, and fresh basil over a white sauce. We both thought it was REALLY good! Lastly, I thought the beer was solid, very solid actually. They offer several IPAs on tap. I had the Shanghai'd and their regular IPA and both were good. Also, the tunnel tour does come with beer tastings and is not only a great way to wrap up the tour but also a great way to get familiar with their different beer offerings!
google avatar

Paolo S.

Yelp
This spot is a definite go-to for pizza lovers. I loved the pizza and how much toppings I got. The service is ok. The ambiance was very relaxing. Definitely recommend this old timey pizza place if you're downtown and looking for pie.
google avatar

Joe H.

Yelp
We went to the underground tour that started at this restaurant. Tour was ok and our guide was great. Stay around for a beer and order a pizza to go. It was good and had leftovers the next day
google avatar

Tim S.

Yelp
Mostly for the Shanghai Tunnel Tour guide, Natasha. It's a fun look at a spooky locale with a couple of cool ghost stories thrown in. She filled the tour with laughs, fun stories, and genuine connection to the history. However, their Red Ale and their pizza are also notable. Great establishment, friendly staff, and one hell of a tour.

Val V.

Yelp
Haven't gone here in decades until I went back today with my son. It's AS GREAT or BETTER than it was 40 years ago! Such great pizza/crust/sauce and they had a Kolsch on tap that was perfect. Great service, historical atmosphere. I'm so glad they are still around!!

Jena G.

Yelp
The Shanghai Tunnel tour was a joke. Do not waste your money. I booked a tour for 8 of us in the party. with beer tasting at the end of the tour. I made the mistake by walking in with an "outside" empty drink in my hand (because there were no garbage cans outside) and was immediately called out by the bartender, that she would not serve me. No big deal, I turned around and left my empty cup outside. The tour itself was sad. Not worth the money spent. The tunnels are under construction with walls being erected. The pizza joint uses the tunnels as their storage unit, they don't give off the "haunted" vibe as everyone says they do. It felt like we were walking in circles. The tour guide was overly theatrical, which maybe she was paid extra or just graduated from the theatre. Everyone one who paid for this particular tour was able to participate in the beer tasting down in the tunnels at a bar that clearly was made for this tour, and at the end of the beer tasting everyone was given a token for a free alcohol beverage. And yet again, I was called out by the tour guide and given a token for a non-alcohol beverage. Lesson learned. I don't know who is doing the construction of the tunnels, The city, the pizza joint, but they are ruining them. If these tunnels are on the National Historic Site and this is being allowed, someone should get spanked.

Cassie G.

Yelp
The pizza and beer are delicious, the building is comfortable and has an incredible history, and the customer service was excellent. Caitlyn, our tour guide, gave us a wonderful tour of the Portland underground, telling us the sordid history of the underground and spooky tales to go along with it. She also was an excellent barista, during the beer tasting. Thank you, folks! We'll be back.

Lenny O.

Yelp
Fantastic just as I remember it! Pizza was GREAT! Staff super nice. Brings me back to when I was a kid! Will be back.

Mark W.

Yelp
Loved this place. Didn't take the "Haunted tour" . Pizza is very good. $27. We feed four adults on one pizza, 10 garlic knots and two salads. Everything were huge portions and we took pizza and knots home. Cute environment and friendly staff.

Mike O.

Yelp
We ordered pizza at 5PM on 4th of a July while visiting Portland. The young lady that answered was pleasant, the prices more than fair and the pizza divine. One of the best pies we've ever had. The crust is crispy with a good chew, the sauce was robust but not too strong, the pepperoni cupped and greasy and the baked onions dog and sweet. Yum!

H W.

Yelp
Great pizza, garlic knots, and beer. Just love the flavor of the bread. I had the shanghai IPA and it was delicious. I did the underground tour while I was there and although I didn't personally experience anything paranormal, this place is hainted.

Jennifer J.

Yelp
Shanghai tour was a lot of fun and the pizza and beer was delicious!! Would definitely recommend to anyone!!
google avatar

Domenic C.

Yelp
Absolutely a must for the Ghost Tour, GREAT BEER, and topped off with a Veggie pizza!!! The bar staff, pizza cooks, and most of all the ghost tour guide were beyond friendly, and professional! There's some kind of otherworldly energy truly going on at this location as well! Don't miss this!

Libby C.

Yelp
This review is for the tour and beer tasting. Our tour guide Jason was so knowledgeable and patient with the many questions people were asking. I had very little knowledge of the Shanghai tunnels and left with a ton of history. Thank you Jason! The tour ends with a beer tasting of 3 of their beers and a full pint or can to go on top of that! My favorite was Pilsner. A few things the website doesn't tell you: You need to be very able bodied to go on the tour. Not only is is very dark but there are times where you have to duck under things and navigate the uneven ground. It's really dark. you get a little lantern with a battery operated candle but I needed the flashlight on my cell the majority of the time. Our tour was at 2pm but the restaurant doesn't serve food until 3. We arrived early with the internet to eat lunch first but had to go elsewhere. Others on our tour had the same experience. Finally the location is in a pretty sketchy part of town. Don't leave any valuables in your car. Some of the members of of tour said their Uber driver told them not to hang in the area at night. Street parking wasn't terribly tricky to find but it was a challenge to find a street where the meter wasn't broken! It is definitely a worthwhile experience.
google avatar

Sharlene W.

Yelp
We didn't eat or drink anything here but did take the tunnel tour which was a blast. Our tour guide (I think his name was Jason?) was super informative and personable and the tour was creepy in the best way. I felt very enveloped in the history and truly enjoyed myself. The beer tasting afterwards was charming and the brews were yummy. I recommend this tour to anyone wanting to try something different and interesting!
google avatar

Grace C.

Yelp
The Shanghai tour was pretty cool. We got pizza after and a Caesar salad. The pizza was good but the Caesar salad had so much raw garlic in the dressing it was inedible and we couldn't get the taste of garlic out of our mouths forever. Kind of ruined the meal because all we could taste was garlic after one bite of lettuce. But good pizza!
google avatar

Yelp
Another Ghost Caputured! We caught a Ghost Observing the "Ghost tour on April 30th, 2023. This place is one of my sons favorites, not to mention we always seem to catch a ghost or 2 in our photos! I also caught some floating orbs on video as well. *If you're interested in knowing if your place or business is haunted and would like me to capture video or photos for your personal or business ventures, contact me @ alissiadenise@gmail.com. all pictures captured on my cell phone and all ghoulies or orbs are visible immediately if/when I capture them!!!

Yelp
I brought my partner here for our anniversary because I wanted to take a Shanghai Tunnel tour. It's one of those things that I feel is interesting enough and when you live here you just kind of should. So this was our activity for the day and we had a really good time. Our guide Jason had a lot of interesting information and kept it moving along smoothly. It's not like you're going to see anything too crazy, but it's more about what you knew was going on down here. It was fun to check out and just kind of imagine what it was like back in the day. Part of what prompted me to choose this place for the tour was that it's a brewery too. For not much more money I had purchased the package that included a 3 sample beer tasting with a pint (or take home can). Totally worth it! The beers were very different from eachother and all pretty tasty. We opted to take home cans which honestly, was a really nice option to have. Was a good time.
