"Portland has become a pizza town over the years, but before locals were topping pies with burrata or ‘nduja, Old Town Pizza was there with its house special — pepperoni, salami, Italian sausage, mushroom, black olives, and bell pepper. An Old Town staple for over 50 years since its opening in 1974, the two-story restaurant in a historic building has since expanded across the river and added a taproom, so diners can pair barbecue chicken pizza with flagship brews like IPAs and pilsners or seasonal specialties like the mushroom ale. The limited-run Shanghai’d IPA and alfredo sauce Ghost Pie both allude to the site’s location above Portland’s Shanghai tunnels, which are said to be haunted. The brewery, which sits in the former lobby of the 19th-century Merchant Hotel, is allegedly home to a ghost named Nina, donning a black dress and spotted wandering the basement’s halls.
