3 Best Day Trips from Nashville | Condé Nast Traveler

"By highway, Columbia is less than an hour from downtown Nashville, but you’ll feel like you are world’s away when you arrive to explore its maker and artist community, boutiques and restaurants, presidential home, and mule culture. Yes, mules. Since the mid-1800s, Columbia has been the “mule capital of the world.” During World War II, they were even trained for the military. Each April the four-day Mule Day festival celebrates all things related to the mule, but any time of year you’ll see enough murals, art, and merchandise about the animal that could make a poor farmer rich." - Margaret Littman

Google
First time visiting Nashville and we did this on our second to last day before returning home. By this time we had already gone to most of the places that the trolley took you to. But having a guide take. You was pretty awesome. It cost about $80 per person and you have the whole day to be able to get off and on the trolley. From 9:00 until 4:00 p.m. You can have them pick you up at any of the stops. And each trolley comes around every 30 minutes to pick anybody up. The first gentleman we had did a great job at remembering things about the city but I felt overall he was kind of rude. I didn't get his name. We were then put on another trolley because for one reason or another the other one had to wait for an additional 30 minutes. So a few of us from my trolley jumped on to another trolley leaving right away to continue the tour. The second gentleman's name was Jeff and boy was he fantastic. Not only is he a local so I think that helped. But he was so funny. Gave us much more information than the first guy was. And overall seemed happy and enjoying his job. Was joking with the people on the bus and getting us involved and asking questions. I really enjoyed him. He did a great job. I would probably say to do this in the beginning of your trip so that you can see the areas you might want to explore more. Or maybe just taking the whole day to be able to spend more time at these spots. Well worth it anytime I travel. I'm going to be looking for a trolley tour like this to give us a tour of the city. I would definitely suggest getting tickets ahead of time. They fill up fast. Don't miss it if you come to Nashville.

Really a great way to see Nashville! We couldn't have been happier with our tour and tour guides. They had great knowledge of the area and history. We did the hop on-hop off tour, and it was great!

Google
Clean buses and funny and friendly staff. Overall a good time but the buses get full and when you get off it’s hard to get on one. We waited for three buses, seemed like over an hour. Each driver said there would be a bus a few minutes away that has room. We were also told that that’s how it is on busy weekends. Totally understand that, but maybe provide more buses or limited ticket sales would mitigate the excessive waits and wasted time.

Google
First time visiting Nashville we had a great time on the bus ! Benji was so good we got great information and he was so nice and friendly! Best thing to do in first day to know where to go:) On way back we had Tall Tale he was awesome also told great stories!

Google
Great time enjoyed the history shared at Nashville, C.B. our driver/guide was on point he really loves his job. Looking forward to returning soon, Also visited the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Google
I highly recommend the tour. Our tour guide Drey was awesome! He entertained us with his puns and stories the whole way. This was a great way to see more of Nashville and learn about the history.

Google
This was my first time in Nashville and my first time on a Trolley tour! It was such a great way to be introduced to a new city! The driver was knowledgeable and funny and proud of his Nashville roots! We did the day tour and the night tour and it gave us some great ideas of where we wanted to hop off and learn more. Time very well spent!

Google
Old-time trolley tours are a wonderful way to see and enjoy Nashville where you don't have to drive and look for parking at each point of interest. The tour is narrated live by the trolley driver. There are 12 stops along the way and plenty of places to disembark to eat or enjoy other activities. It's approximately a 2-hour trip if you just stay on the bus through the loop.

Yelp
This tour was enjoyable! The driver/tour guide was funny and informative-extremely knowledgeable about the area. He point out the various recording studios, offered historical background info.... We are staying downtown, and it was nice to see the other spots of Nashville. Also they offer discounted tickets to many of the attractions.

Yelp
I loved the Old Town Trolley experience it took us to places that we wanted to see & the rest we either Uber'd or walked. It took us to about 12 or 13 different stops. We did the whole tour and then decided on the spots we wanted to hop on & hope off at. Luckily, we didn't have to experience waiting for trolleys & not being able to get on because it was full. The sides were open so you could see alot. We got to see the gulch, 2 museums (we past by a 3rd museum, the African American Music museum & I was surprised that our tour guide didn't even mention it. He mentioned the assembly hall right next door but not this museum). Don't know if some of the other tour guides at least mention it. This museum was absolutely awesome I had the most fun in that one since it was interactive. I did feel the price is a lot for hop on hop off, I've been to others that was cheaper but ‍ I loved the experience. I also liked different tour guides had their own spin & razor dazzle, my last tour guide I know I would've enjoyed the most because he had the most jokes & animation but I only had him for a stop. Wish I had him longer.

Yelp
We just had a day to spend in Nashville and after seeing that Old Town Trolley Tours (who we have used in San Diego and had a great experience with) has a branch here, we decided that would be the best way to get an overview of the city. We were able to get a few bucks off with a Groupon and check in was really easy. A new trolley pulls up about every 5 minutes so we didn't have to wait long at all to board even though the first one we waited for filled up before we could get on. We did one hop off at the Bicentennial Park (which I highly recommend) and then got back on with Jeff, who was fantastic, hilarious, knowledgeable and passionate about his job and city. Our first driver was enjoyable too but totally forgot to catch his name (sorry!!). The seats were comfortable and I liked that they inserted some audio and video history as well as they drive between sites. I really learned so much about Nashville's extensive music history and place in American history, which was really cool. We ended the day with the Country Music Hall of Fame (which the trolley tour had discounted tickets for.) and all in all felt like we got a good first look at the city, which left us wishing our trip was longer. I highly recommend Old Town Trolley Tours!

Yelp
EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT! This was one of the best things we did in Nashville. We prebooked our tickets then arrived at the pickup spot on Broadway diagonally opposite the Hard Rock Cafe. Since we were the first group on the bus, getting a seat wasn't a problem. However, at the end of the day, buses were full and you had to wait for another bus to come around again and pick you up. We drove through on the entire route 2 times and got on and off at different points. Each time we had a different driver that had their own trivia and information about the city. We learned SO MUCH on this tour from famous landmarks, history, famous original settlers, and of course Country musicians. It was fantastic! TIP: If you are able to, arrive early for the first trolley of the day and plan to be done by about 3pm, because those last buses in the 4pm hour were full and there was a wait. We went in September, so it may not be an issue during low season/winter.

Yelp
What an experience! This was one of our favorite ways to explore Nashville. The trolley has a variety of stops around the city and you can get on and off as you please within a certain amount of time. We were able to visit many locations and sightseeing spots with little to no hassle of traveling or navigating the busy streets. each tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable, funny and enthusiastic about their love for this wonderful city. I highly recommend taking a ride with them. You definitely won't regret it.

Yelp
I see these buses all over New York City as well as the people offering deals at Time Square. I'm working, I'm focused and don't have time to sit on a bus. Put me in vacation mode? I see a Old Town Trolley Tours bus and my wife agrees its a good idea to see a different perspective of Nashville. We buy our tickets and away we go! First, I recommend doing the entire loop first so you can see the city. We drove by two museums and decided to hop off and start our day seeing the music museum which I highly recommend. The bus sides are open and we were able to enjoy the beautiful weather. The bus driver is navigating the bus and talking about all the historic Nashville spots. They were able to provide video on the TVs to help with the various Nashville stories. My only issue, the one day pass is a little pricey. I'd like to see a discount for military and various coupons like: Hop off at the Gulch section and join us for lunch, $20 off with your bus pass. How about $5 off the museum price with your bus pass? I need to run everything.

Yelp
Old Town Trolley Tour Bus is a hop on and off all day tour bus that stops at thirteen town trolley stops. My mother and I brought tickets to see the city of Nashville. Are driver was funny, pleasant, and very knowledgeable about the city. It was a great way to experience the town of Nashville and it makes frequent stops at The Country Hall of Fame, The Johnny Cash Museum, National African American Museum of Music, other museums, and other site seeing's of the culture of Nashville. Additionally, you can buy tickets on the bus for the museum's for a discounted price. The only disadvantage is that it stops around four. My mother and I missed the last bus from downtown so we took an Uber to are next destination.

Anita R.

Yelp
Guides were very informative, courteous, accommodating, and humorous! Definitely recommend this tour!

Yelp
What a wonderful Autumn day tour through the city. Our shuttle driver, Kyle, was wonderful and our tour guide/driver, Amy, made us feel right at home and gave us a fast, humorous and indelible education in the history, culture and singular importance of Nashville as the Music City. The tour included music and display images on overhead screens. We hadn't expected that. We've been on several Old Town Trolley tours but never had any media which is a great story-telling tool. A bus tour is the best way to break the ice when visiting a big, complicated and growing city like Nashville. Now that we have seen all of the best places to park, and the different neighborhoods and places of interest, the next few days of sightseeing will be easier and more productive. Also, the Old Town Trolley bus is the best way to get photos of the city - especially those skyline shots which are so difficult to achieve from the sidewalk.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice tour with a really good tour guide. It was a nice day out so it was even better. The music history and stories that are told are entertaining. It fairly busy sometimes so if you're waiting at your stop to get on and it's full. You will have to wait longer. Bus comes around about every thirty minutes.

Julie S.

Yelp
Too hot for summer. Having to wait while people get on and off and decide whether to get off and on - during the summer ain't fun. Music Row was great.
google avatar

Dave H.

Yelp
Such a great concept. We were worried about how many trolleys there were and how often they would come around. But every time we got off and were ready to get on another, the trolley magically showed up. Then we figured it out. There must be at least 13 trolleys because they "appear" at all 13 stops about 930 AM. I think we had three different drivers and they were all very knowledgeable of the sights in Nashville. We were on Music Row and our daughter wanted to get off for a quick photo of a studio. They were gracious enough to allow a quick photo stop. It's a great tour to start your visit to get more acquainted with the memorable spots in Nashville.

Yelp
We had two drivers today (April 13, 2024). Hunter was great. My mom (90) had her walker and he immediately jumped down and picked it up and placed it on the bus. He was kind, thoughtful and informative. Our next driver was Robert he was so helpful too. He too was helpful with my Mother's walker. He was also full of interesting local information and history. Thank you to both these men.
google avatar

Kenya H.

Yelp
Another excellent trolly tour by Old Town. I really enjoy Old Towns staff who give you an in depth overview of all the historic stops. We had a few different guides throughout the day but all were very friendly, funny and knowledgeable.
google avatar

Charlotte W.

Yelp
We decided to do the trolley tour so we could see more sights with less walking. Some people recommend doing the whole loop then getting off which is what we did. Only downside is you've use 1 and 1/2 - 2 hours and then may have to ride 3-4 more stops to where you want to get off. The tour guides were great and knowledgeable and impressive at navigating the traffic. Do check and see if all the stops are open because the one closest to our hotel was closed due to construction. Not a big deal there were stops for us within walking distance but just something to keep in mind. The tour definitely takes you to lots of key places to see we might have missed otherwise.
google avatar

Kelly K.

Yelp
I've ridden on this Trolley twice and loved it each time. It's a fun way to see Nashville!

Aidan L.

Yelp
60$ a person to wait in the heat, only for a full bus to come and not be able to get a seat. But Good customer service.
google avatar

Stacey L.

Yelp
The only reason I give this company at least 3 stars is because the bus driver was fantastic! However, the buses only come every 30 minutes, if that, and there isn't enough seeting when they finally arrive. Extremely expensive in both my time and money.
google avatar

Ray A.

Yelp
My wife and I enjoyed this experience in Nashville. We had very knowledgeable drivers that were both entertaining and funny. The tour has 13 stops across the Nashville area. My only negative thing about this experience is it is done by 4ish. Would have liked it to be longer operating periods. It's hard to enjoy too many stops and be done by 415. I would do this again if ever back in Nashville.
google avatar

Jamie B.

Yelp
In all honesty this isn't worth the money. The stops are mostly ones that are paid for by the vendors that you'll go into at the stop. Yes the Marathon car factory was an interesting story, but a stop there just leaves a distillery and that crappy shop off American pickers. The drivers can be entertaining, but they do the tour in just over an hour. And if you've done it once you're not really going to want to do it again. Cheaper to Uber to the tour highlights.
google avatar

Christa V.

Yelp
We thoroughly enjoyed our tour. We like to hop on a tour bus before venturing into a new city to scope out all the good spots to explore later. Our tour guides, Amy and then Kyle, were both great! Very informative and helpful!

Ken D.

Yelp
Don't use this company when you're in town unless you're ok being stranded in an unfamiliar city miles from where you were picked up. Today, after specifically asking about getting to my original pickup, I was put out at 4:15, when their website(and their employees) say they run till 5. These tour busses are a dime a dozen in Nashville. Pick another one that actually cares about their out of town guests. To add further detail: we were NOT taken to Stop #1, but forced off at stop #13.

Yelp
What a fun way to see the city! I'm a local, and went with my parents, visiting from Florida. They love history and I had heard good things about the Trolley. I was amazed at how busy it was on a Monday! I'm told they run as many as 17 trolleys. So this is clearly a popular outing. You board on lower Broadway, right next to the ticket booth. Even if you buy your ticket online, you have to stand in the ticket line. Room for improvement here. You can hop on and hop off all day, though some of the stops really don't offer much. Others, like the Farmer's Market and the Gulch, offer plenty. The tour provides insight and history and is good for all ages. There are 14 stops in all, and you can follow along in the guide provided at the ticket counter. It is about 1 3/4 hours of you stay on the whole time, and don't hop Off. Many people on our tour did just that. I took away a star because the audio is not always easy to hear, and I did think it was pricey for what it is.
google avatar

Josh F.

Yelp
Excellent tour! I had Owen and Benji and they were amazing and very informative and engaging and funny! definitely enhanced my visit to Smashville

Mark L.

Yelp
Not a big tour guy but this was a great experience and very informative. Would recommend.
google avatar

Jennifer T.

Yelp
I am so glad I started my trip with this tour. It gave us a nice overview of the city. We had a great tour guide, named Jason. We did the entire loop then got off at the first stop and walked around. We had a great time.
google avatar

Danielle C.

Yelp
This could have been 5 stars. BUT...we had two people with us who have difficulty walking. We were not told that 4 p.m. is the latest to get on the bus and we could not get back to the stop we needed to. This led to my handicapped husband and father having to walk two very long blocks. If we didn't wait almost an hour for our bus at the farmers market we could have made it back. At least "Cornbread" was a great guide.
google avatar

Maria O.

Yelp
I ordered my tickets on line to avoid any lines. When I arrived at 10 am on a Sunday, there wasn't many people in line to get tickets. When the driver arrived, he was very friendly and personable. The tour itself was very informative and was well worth the price. Discounts are also available at a lot of the venues if you show your ticket. I would recommend this tour if you'd like to see some neighborhoods in Nashville and hear a little history about the city.
google avatar

Travis G.

Yelp
DO NOT, I repeat. Do not take this tour if you want to get toffee at any stops. If you get off, and are not by yourself, good luck getting back on sitting next to your friends or family. Such a rip off. They need to sell less tickets. Total scam

Cameron Hills H.

Yelp
This was our third time on the Town Trolly. We have had two outstanding narrators and one very bad one. Most of the sites are non events, just riding around city streets. Most stops have nothing to do except walk around the city streets. My serious complaint is we were forced to stop at the Marathon Motor Works to give the driver a 15 minute brake. It was very hot. We were told to remain on the bus while two Trolly employees boarded the bus to check our tickets. However, what they actually did was attempted to sell each person discount tickets to other events while we baked in the sun. They actually delayed the bus an additional 15 minutes. It was extremely irritating. I do not recommend this tour!!!!!
google avatar

Julie B.

Yelp
Sis and I didn't know where to start our vacation... so much to see, so little time. So we purchased a two-day ticket for this hop on/off trolley tour. We picked up a brochure in our hotel lobby and finding the ticket booth was pretty easy. We were on a bus within 15 mins and off we went...a full circle from start to finish. The driver was very knowledgeable, explaining things as we drove by and people got on /off. Found out things I didn't know I was even interested in. Also lots of info about the history of Tennessee. Our intention was to use the 2nd day pass for transportation to not easily walkable locations but the timing just didn't work out. Last tour is at 4:30 and we would make it. I would definitely purchase again and use the GET OFF part.
google avatar

Collins H.

Yelp
We had Russell as a guide for the first part of our tour of Nashville. He was great then it switched to Davis and he was okay. We have used the old town trolley in Savannah and now Nashville. We was pleased with both. Would definitely recommend.
google avatar

Kristi M.

Yelp
We had a need to learn some history while in town and this fit our need. Within a few hours we Felt like we had seen a great deal and learn a whole lot. Tim our guide was helpful and funny.

Annette S.

Yelp
Excellent, knowledgeable drivers with so many stories. Buses ran more frequently than they even said, granted it was the end of January and not overly busy. Would definitely recommend if you want to learn more about Nashville and save a few steps.
google avatar

Cindy H.

Yelp
Great driver, Tim, born and raised in Nashville. Lots of great stories. We did the whole tour and thenn went back the next couple days to actually see some of the places we went by. They also sell discounted tickets for some of the museums downtown. Well worth the cost.

Kerri S.

Yelp
We did the two day hop on hop off passes recently. All of our tour guides were great but the best of the bunch were Russell and Dre. They were both so funny and told the greatest stories but Dre was especially hilarious. I've done this trolley tour in San Diego and they are just the best way to get the most out of seeing a city. I recommend if you do a two day pass or even just the one day to do a full circuit of all the stops to see where you want to go and then just hop off where you want to go. Highly recommended!

Kathleen B.

Yelp
What a huge waste of money. So bummed. The volume was so loud and the driver talks so fast it was impossible to even comprehend what was said. Zero retention of anything he said and literally could not wait to get off.
google avatar

JoAnne W.

Yelp
It was very informative, but we hit it at a time where at every stop people were waiting to get back on, and were told will have to wait for next bus. So made us kinda scared to get off. We did get off at one stop and had no problem getting back on. Some of the narrative is confusing at exactly what they are looking at. But overall enjoyed it.
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely would not recommend the Nashville Hop On Hop Off Trolley Tour. A group of nine women went on this tour and we all found it to be waste of time and money. The tour stops at 14 locations where you can hop on and off with trolleys coming around every 20-30 minutes. We only hopped off at one location because the vast majority of the locations were closed on Sunday we took the tour. This should have been mentioned at the time of purchasing the tour because if you are not hopping off it's a HUGE waste. The tour bus was packed with people and was extremely hot. I got a lovely heat rash from sitting in the extreme heat for what felt like hours. When everyone on the packed bus got up to exit everyone's backs and bums were wet with sweat. Oddly, we were told when we were waiting to get on the first trolley if it got hot the trolley was air-conditioned; it is not. It's an open-air trolley. It was difficult to hear and understand the tour guide as oftentimes what they were talking about wasn't in view and if and when it ever was in view they had already moved on to the next out of view thing. Occasionally, they would play video clips on monitors within the trolley but the volume was screechy high that it hurt your ears and was hard to decipher what was being said. Our first tour guide, Dave, had a jokey demeanor which made the tour a little more interesting but our second guide, Braxton, made me drowsy. The locations on the tour itself were for the most part boring - some of them may have been interesting to see if they were open. The last four locations were the most boring and took the longest to get through. It felt like we were driving through the rundown and uninteresting parts of Nashville; the tour talked about hospitals and Krystals. Overall, this tour was just awful. We all hated it and thought it was a waste of time and money. I wouldn't recommend it at all - certainly not on a Sunday when everything is closed! Apparently, they have a 100% satisfaction guarantee so someone from customer relations contacted me and offered me a refund that I was told would take 4-weeks for processing - so I guess we'll see if that pans out.

James K.

Yelp
Both our guides were superb. First one, however, could have spoken a bit slower...what's the rush, right? Second one was perfect. One day is actually not enough time (for us) to hop on/off very often. There's so much to see/do. Now for the bad news: Address on confirmation sheet was incorrect, had to call and get a different address. Also, if you drive, expect to pay upwards of $40+ to park while you're on the tour.

Chris B.

Yelp
Why hold passengers hostage on the trolley while they try to sell museum tickets. Tell everyone about the tickets etc. sat here for like 15mins. Other than that, it was decent.

Byron T.

Yelp
I get that Old Town Trolley Tours may have a policy to buy a pass ahead of time but after walking a ways in humid weather with work clothes the driver could have been more professional. He happened to show up briefly after I did and wasn't willing to let me buy a pass (pretty much instantly) via my smart phone. He or the company are indicating that they lack emotional intelligence. My guess is that this underlying vibe is present elsewhere in the experience they offer.

Yelp
OMG WHAT EVER YOU DO MAKE SURE DAVE IS YOUR DRIVER!!! He is the best comedian and you will really enjoy his jokes!! He also has so much knowledge of his city and you can tell he really loves his town!!!! ( FYI his grandparents had a place is Muskegon MI so that almost makes him a Michigander lol) This tour is amazing, fun, informational and really very interesting with a lot of history! You see so much of this town you won't be disappointed!' It's not to long, in fact it is just right for those of us with ADHD!! DAVE I AM STILL WAITING FOR MY PICK I

Yelp
BUYER BEWARE. So I have been to a ton of different cities that offer hop on hop off tours and have never had an issue. After doing my research and comparing the value of the old town trolley tours to others, I concluded I got the most with this tour group. One of the Key factors in choosing to go with this tour group is that you received free admission to two sites. One being the Madam Tussauds Wax museum that my sister and I wanted to go to. What the tour group fails to mention is that they do not remotely stop anywhere near the wax museum so if you want to take advantage you are responsible for getting transportation to the site. We found this strange especially since all of the other sites and extra adds you can purchase were along the trolley route except that one. The next things is that the tour group boasts all day unlimited boarding.. it's all day unlimited boarding within business hours which isn't bad if you start early but each stop is about a 15-30 minute wait for the next trolley. However, we ran into issues when we literally were at a stop that went through 3 previous trollies before we could get on because of the number of people. Now think about if you wait through 3 trollies, you have spent about 45 minutes or so just to get on board which cuts into your hop on/hop off trolly time. Now I understand we were there during the 4th of July week and the tour guys did apologize profusely stating that they were running on full capacity but I feel they should have planned better in advance for the holiday. In addition, one of the trolleys we were on brakes were so loud and screechy that we didn't feel safe on it. Another thing we didn't like is that outside of the Downtown location, there were no tour guides/staffers at any of the drops to help guide you or perhaps just be there to help crowd control. Lastly, this tour group boasts a 100% satisfaction guarantee policy or your money back. I requested a refund request on 7/5 and am still waiting. I have so far put in 2 calls and was told it takes 10 business days for them to issue refunds and it is on the site but I don't recall seeing that and if that is the case, I would think they would include that information in their refund request confirmation which I have included a photo where no where does it state the amount of time it takes. So I was told to call yet another 3rd time if I don't receive anything tomorrow.. as that would be the 10th business day. The tour guides were great so this review is no reflection of them. This is based on poor management and in my opinion so shady business practices. I was already dissatisfied with the tour but the way they have handled my refund request is just more proof of poor customer service.

Yelp
This is an excellent way to see the city - find out all of the places to see visit eat shop .. our tour guide Nelson was extremely knowledgeable. Highly recommend this tour above all others (and we did try another - no where near as informative as Nelson)
google avatar

Matthew S.

Yelp
Very informative and fascinating tour. Happy we decided to do it. Highly recommended!

Detroit T.

Yelp
We took two Greyline tours and the Old Town Trolley tour. We enjoyed all three. Some trolley drivers were getter than others. All seemed knowledgeable. Had to call a Lyft because we were standing out in a thunderstorm waiting for the trolley to come.

Yelp
In every city when available we usually try the hop on/ hop off bus to get a lay of the land and learn a little something about the sights. This was a great guided ride with clear speakers, video, music and some history. Had about 15 stops of which 2 had issues with traffic and were deleted from our course. We had a pleasant ride and experience. Our bus was well maintained and clean. It was crowded but everyone had a seat. I would recommend this attraction in Nashville. Enjoy!

Yelp
Loved the tour. It was freezing when we went so it wasn't ideal, but the driver made the experience fun and enjoyable! We loved Travis! Tour was informative and comedic. It was a relaxing way to learn about the city.

Yelp
Meh. I've definitely been on better hop-on / hop-off bus tours in other major cities. A group of friends and I hit up Nashville Labor Day weekend for my Bachelorette Party and I was looking forward to being tourists with my friends via this tour. One of the tour guides was so incredibly boring and monotoned that a few of us fell asleep for portions of the tour. I also found that a lot of hot spots are missed on the tour and it definitely wasn't worth the $30 we paid. There were also coupons online but they did not accept them for whatever reason. The experience would have been better if there were fans or AC running somehow on the bus. A few guests almost passed out because of the heat when we were stuck in traffic. This is an easy and relaxing way to see most of Nashville but this company needs to step up their game!
