"Olowalu General Store Open since 1932, this pit stop on the road to Lahaina is most famous for its Hawaiian hot dogs. They’re just standard red franks, grilled and stuffed in a bun, but Maui’s pro surfers and their fans—who usually stop here on their way to Olowalu Beach—have elevated the snack to almost cult status. If you’re not one for hot dogs, the general store also sells boiled peanuts, shave ice, and Spam musubi , along with an abbreviated Mexican menu when the kitchen’s cranking. In between bites, take time to browse the shop’s collection of locally made souvenirs and appreciate its unique decor. A late employee had a soft spot for starving artists and would often trade food for artworks, asking only that the pieces incorporated his favorite vehicle—a Volkswagen Beetle."

Aloha! This was next to our pie stop and we just had to swing by to see what souvenirs we can take home. They had lots to choose from and I had trouble picking but ended up with two bracelets , surfboard frame to hang , two hats and a turtle tray. We really liked our picks! Thanks again and mahalo! Souvenir prices are good and comparable, or lower than most Souvenir prices around. The prepared food was tasty and cheap. Great and wide selection of quick food and tchotchkes (necklace, shot glasses, leis, picture frames, etc.) We stopped here multiple times.

Gotta stop in and grab a plate or snack. The dogs are legendary, get one with chili and jalapenos. Get the poke and get the butter mochi. It's all awesome! Support local!

Google
Not Cyclist Friendly – Disrespectful Service Visited on May 10, 2025, and was met with rudeness and disrespect. I brought in my bike—which is high value—and mentioned I wasn’t comfortable leaving it outside. The man behind the counter (long hair, glasses) mocked the cost of my bike and laughed about it with another customer. When I asked if this is how they treat paying customers, he argued instead of resolving the situation. I said, “Peace and love, brother,” and he told me, “You’re done. Stop talking.” As a cyclist and someone visiting with deep respect for this island, it was disappointing to be treated this way. Every other place I’ve visited on this trip has shown nothing but kindness and aloha. Sadly, not here.

Google
Stopped here for a cheeky Spam masubi snack and ended up getting the daily special, which were beef cheek tacos. They were legit some of the tastiest tacos I've ever had. The place looks a bit dodgy but it's one of the best food decisions you can make to order up a feed.

Google
This place has some of the best boiled peanuts I have ever had in my life. The pie next door was also good but not as good as the boiled peanuts.

Always a must stop on the way to Lahaina we used to stop for red hotdogs and drinks, now they have Mexican food as well as local favorites like shave ice...plus gifts and more not sure if they have new owners or new management but there’s been changes lately. I ordered the shrimp plate it was really good!

Yelp
I love this place! They have the best fruit here you can get fresh. We got like 3 papayas to eat for breakfast every morning during our stay in Maui. They have all kinds of goodies from seasonings to pancake mix to candies and touristy trinkets. Its also right next to leodas pies which I hear are also a must try. The people running this general store are so friendly and treat you like family.

Yelp
Nestled in the monkeypod tree tunnel on Hwy 30, it is one of the most recognized shops that have been around but you always pass by. Why? The store is alone in a stretch of the highway where there is nothing and where the traffic is constantly pushing making it hard to slow down and enter. With that said... Homemade Mochi is why we come. The Musubi is decent enough to pick up for the beach. Chilled local drinks in the coolers. Various miscellaneous items you might need or think you need. It looks classic because it is classic. Looks old because it is old. The lady is much more nicer than the grumpy dudes.

Yelp
Good to see the stand has opened again. I believe it's the first business to open up, others may be waiting to see how business does. It looked like all the tables and walls were filled with items, and fresh fruit was displayed up front. It has been very hard here, but I hope things start to pick up quickly.

Yelp
Most known for the "red hot dogs" which are less of a Hawaii thing and more Filipino. We didn't get the hotdogs and instead came for a cold drink since the juice stand was on break when we stopped by. It's a very interesting store that's been open since 1932. They have normal convenience store items like rows of cold drinks but also odd items like fishing poles. There is also a small kitchen where they make warm foods like the hotdogs and fresh chicharrones. The spam musubi was sold out when we went in the afternoon but we did get the Bibingka which the kids loved. It's a Filipino mochi with sugar and butter and a nice seared outside. While I struggled to find Li Hing powdered sweets at other places they have a ton of different varieties here. They are "obachan's" branded and very good.

Yelp
I remember stopping here with the fams growing up and on beach trips with my friends in high school on the way to west side. So nostalgic. The gotta stop place for red local style hot dogs. Still reasonably priced, and still hits the spot. Today stopped on in the middle of work while driving from south maui to west side. Hot dog as good as I remembered. Hit the spot.

Yelp
I do like this place. Just don't get the boil peanuts. The cook could of at least tasted one. The cook should of been able to tell by the gard shell that they weren't cooked Ling enough. It's like the cook boiled it an hour and said, technically I boiled it so I can call it boiled peanuts. I too my now very expensive peanuts and boiled it 3 hours at home. Still hard. Must of been old peanuts or the cook isn't local so doesn't know what he's doing.

Yelp
I've lived on Maui for most of my life and only just recently stopped by Olowalu General store for the first time. They're located right next to Leoda's and have parking available in the front and to the sides of the store. The store is older and upon walking in it's like stepping back in time, giving up all the mom and pop shop vibes. They have a small but mighty selection of all the general things you would need, including drinks, snacks, snorkels, sun screen, and even some souvenirs for the tourists. I was actually surprised about the variety of items! I bought some drinks to go with my lunch from Leoda's and was quickly on my way. Overall, good quick stop!

Yelp
Everything you need in a little convenience store! Olowalu is a friendly little community store that's got everything you need, and then you can get a shave ice. A huge pile of ice with sweet flavors, with a little bit of soft serve vanilla on the bottom. And if you stay and eat outside, you might get a visit from a few local critters. Thank you Olowalu for being in the right spot at the right time!

Yelp
If you are going to be traveling to West Maui (Lahaina, Ka'anapali, etc), this is a MUST stop for your sundry needs and some local delicacies. First of all, by stopping here you are supporting a local family business. With your shopping comes MUCH island love and smiles (yes you can see it through the masks, they are that bright). You can pick up your sunscreens and tanning lotions here, your water shoes. T-shirts and fun stuff for your Keiki. But what you SHOULD be buying here is their boiled peanuts and butter mochi. Both of these items are made in house and are DELICIOUS. Fair warning, they are SO good, they usually sell out by noon, so make sure you come early and often. I've been coming to Hawaii since I was a child and THIS shop reminds me of what Hawaii really is, Ohana. I love everyone who works in this shop. With everything they make, they infuse it with love and island magic. There are prepared foods here, that you can use to for a beach picnic. Stop by and tell Maryanne and Helen I sent you. They are my sisters from another Mother. #supportlocal #mauilove

Yelp
Support local always! I love this little mom and pop stop. It has a little bit of everything. A great halfway point on the way to Lahaina or back to Central. There's shave ice, poke bowls, ice cream, and they're known for their local hot dogs too! Must be a Maui thing. You have to get it with all the toppings! My favorite thing there is the fresh chicharron! You have to try it! It's located next to Leoda's Kitchen and Pie Shop as well as a little farmers market and small butterfly farm. You can't miss it! But be mindful of traffic!

Yelp
Stopped by enroute Lahaina beach. The juice truck was amazing. I took the guava base and for fruits selected pineapple and mango. The combination worked out well. I bought a coconut from the store but it wasn't really sweet and unless you fancy a photo I would not recommend it. I bought the shrimp chips from the shop. It was for $17 which seemed pricey to me but they were really good.

Yelp
They have your typical tropical fruits and a bunch of local dried goods. Great pit stop if you're looking for some candy or nuts for your trip around the island. They had some chill music playing and the cashiers were friendly. Just watch out for the prices. I snagged a small bag of chili macadamia for $13.
google avatar

Alice C.

Yelp
Wow, $5 for a HUGE shaved ice is amazing. When you go in you don't pay at the ice cream/shave ice counter but the regular counter then take a tix to that counter and tell them what you want. You can also get ice cream and a snow cap added for a little extra. Get up tp three flavors on your ice has they have a large variety of flavors for both ice cream and shaved ice. They also have bento boxes of noodles and rice that looked delicious I really recommend coming here for shaved ice!
google avatar

Yelp
Great spot for your supplies, and food. Prices are fair, and this spot really gives you the Hawaii feels. It's right next to the pie spot, so there is a decent amount of traffic here, but it's worth it, as they have a decent amount of souvenirs and food that will make your stay in Hawaii that much more pleasant. Overall, if you're at the pie shop next door, make sure to give this place a shot.

Yelp
A small general store to pick up some things you need, or maybe not. Nothing really special in my mind other than maybe location.

Richard S.

Yelp
Service is good. Plenty of products to buy. Variety of candy, coffee, and other dry goods, jam, jellies. Debunked t, credit, and cash payment . Parking along storefront. Note: If shipping, post office boxes are free via USPS (post office). This location will charge for box if asked for one. If you are charged, make sure you are shipping same day at this location or return to ship there. They will ship for you but no tracking at time of shipment. May have possible tracking later. You would need to contact them for any tracking if not received in a few days to a week. If you do not ship sale day, suggest to not ask for box as there is a charge for shipping it - $17 small and $22 Large for priority USA shipping. If they don't give you box, go to post office and get one and pay at counter. Post office will Charge you for postage if you ship this box other than from business. Was verified earlier last week that not to charge for box but business anticipates shipping for you and the cost would be for shipping to your USA address. Depending on where you are staying and leaving it probably would be a good idea to ship goods if needed. You could add own items into box if needed prior to shipping but they will sell a box f you are shipping their items otherwise look for a local post office that is opened Monday - Saturday. This location is open daily. Nice local farmers market for teas, Hawaiian coffee, candy, nuts, etc.

Yelp
Dropped by to grab something to tide us over while SUP boarding in Olowalu and found a mom n pop smorgasbord of goodies. From homemade food, to slippers, to chilled drinks, to tourist chit chat. We really loved the selection and vibe of this store. Roselani ice cream...our favourite Haupia too. Easy parking and you can take the back road to avoid the traffic on the corner. We will definitely be back again. We filled up on granola bars but the hot dogs were a popular choice with other customers.

Yelp
A small little mom & pop store located in Olowalu...... Where is this little store located? If you know where Leoda's Kitchen & Pie Shop is, the Olowalu General Store is just next door! This little store has been around the block a few times, as the store was established in 1932! What can you expect to find in this little mom & pop store? Basically you will find a little of this and that........... Need a t-shirt? Yes, that got lots of that! Hungry? Whoa, they get all kine "local kine grindz!" I saw sandwiches, burgers, bentos, musubi's, boiled peanuts, shave ice, ice cream, butter mochi, baked goods...........you name it, they got it! Visiting Maui, and you need to bring back a few souvenirs for loved ones, or family? Man, they even had a section in the store where they sold touristy gifts so you can pick up something to take home for a loved one. Lots of free parking in the private parking lot, that is shared with Leoda's Kitchen & Pie Shop, and Olowalu Juice Stand. Worth the time to stop by this old skool store.........as you can see, Olowalu General Store had been around since 1932..........AMAZING!!!!

Yelp
Dog gone it man!!!! I wanted to come back for more of their hot dogs n maybe other items as well. Don't think cuz is a general store that you're not going to get good food. One of the best hot dogs I've had in a long time, it was perfect almost with the right amount of condiments they put on. They have different condiments you can add onto the dog at no charge. It's next to leoda's, so get some grinds here n then a delicious pie or a few afterwards!!!! Sorry I have no pics..... but visit this place...... don't be scared!!!!

Yelp
Best Poke Bowl on the Island! From the first bite to the last I was in heaven. When I finished, all I wanted was more.

Yelp
Friendly service, great prices, and yummy treats. We stopped here several times to load up on snacks. Make sure to try their shaved ice, furikake chex mix, butter mochi & spam masubi's.
google avatar

Yelp
Old school since 1932. This is a popular store especially since it's located next door to the ever popular pie shop. The store has some of the goodies you would expect plus shave ice and fast food. For all those squished penny collectors there's a machine right outside the store.
google avatar

Tammy E.

Yelp
Solid general store, in the perfect spot where you might need one to be. It is small but mighty with everything from the essentials to gifts you may want to bring home. They have snack items and lunchboxes as well as what you might need to go fishing or to spend a day relaxing. Prices are reasonable and it's good to support local! The people who work here are welcoming and friendly. While you're in the area grab some fruit to your left and a little pie to your right - you'll be happy with your 3 shop stop!

Yelp
Wanted to get a T-shirt for my grandson. In the middle if the purchase realized I wanted 3 of them total. The woman at the counter was super RUDE! Stated they are 3 for $20 or $50. I replied I dont care how mucu please, I just want 3 of them. She started telling the man behind the counter. "I want to say something but I am behind the counter". I said, please, can uou just ring me up for three of the shirts. She kept talking smack so I looked at a friend and said isnt it so that if we say we want to buy something we just by it, there shouldnt be the hassle because we do not have to patronize the place. She behind the counter kept yapping her mouth. I then asked for a refund & left. Do NOT deal with her if you want to enjoy your vacation.

Yelp
So my 5 star review is for the shaved ice $5 .... Its a steal for this delicious one size shaved ice( it's a huge one btw) For $3 more you get ice cream & a snow cap! Had it 3 times during my 8 day vacation. Didn't stay near but drove out just because it was so good. I had ululani's 2x and to me it tastes the same but for the amount you get and cost I'd rather come here. With little to no line. Now for the workers : I'm assuming it's a family owned business. The mom and daughter were so nice. The daughter helped with the shaved ice once and she was polite and helpful. Now, who I assume is the son. He's kindah a douche. He was rude to some other customers. The little exchange of conversation we had , he was not very pleasant. No Aloha spirit at all. Also the 2nd time around we came by he put very little flavor. Other than that , I'll still come to this general store for some great tasting shaved ice next time I'm in Maui. Snow CapMaybe next time I can make him crack a smile.

Yelp
Small general store kind of dated and run down. It is run by a 3-generational family with the son as the cashier. He was not very friendly and seemed to have a bad attitude and was not very helpful when we asked him if he had certain items. His mother however, was much nicer. They seem to have an eclectic stock ranging from snack items to supplies for the beach and surfing, such as water shoes. They have a large variety of chips, many flavors of which I haven't seen before, and they carry a lot of miscellaneous touristy souvenir items. I was disappointed at how small the store was and how it didn't live up to the hype in the advertisements. They no longer have hot Mexican food that other yelpers have raved about. The cashier told us the guy who made the Mexican food quit a few months ago.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
I love this store. Mary Ann, Helen and Ray have a lot of aloha and always very pleasant. I go in once a week for my special orders and it is always a pleasant experience when these 3 people are working. The store has a little bit of everything.

Chris W.

Yelp
Have to get the bibingka (butter mocha). They run out daily, it's too good. Get the edges! This is a great place to get treats.
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
The ice cream helper is super nice and friendly. The ice cream is delicious. Coconut vanilla and mud pie flavors tasty. The store offers items you may need on the road such as drinks and snacks.
google avatar

Yelp
Mary was awesome very friendly. She made the best shaved ice I've had in Maui and I've tried like 6 so far. Thanks Mary. See you soon glad we stopped by

Yelp
My bf and I discovered this hidden gem on our first trip to Hawaii after visiting the pie place next store. A local told us that some of the best places to eat are at the gas stations and general store and by golly was he right. Not only do they have your typical general store stuff like chips, drinks and snacks but they also have a bunch of hot food that you can grab to go that taste like homemade goodness. They have a really nice selection too, from an omelette with sausage and rice, BBQ chicken, loco Moco, hamburger steak and so much more. And oh, always get the spam musubi because everyone needs a spam musubi to go. We visited this place at least 4x on our 5night stay because of the great food and the amazing, hard working lady that owns the shop made us feel at home every time we stopped by. Wish we had amazing local shops like this in WA. This place was seriously one of the highlights of our trip. Thanks for the great service and food!
google avatar

Rita S.

Yelp
Who knew you can find super good Mexican food at a general store. Yes, that's right they serve some awesome Mexican food here. They have a complete in house kitchen and you can tell it is all homemade. Not too many really good Mexican places on the island. This stop however is not to be missed. Also side note their hot dogs served at the register are also super yummy.
google avatar

Neal B.

Yelp
Great little store on the drive to Lahaina. When you see the trees covering the road you're getting close. The staff was super friendly. We talked with a great lady who gave us some pointers on the shave ice. The shave is is humungous and reasonably priced. Try the creamer on top!
google avatar

Mel M.

Yelp
Olowalu is exactly what the name implies. Fast quick simple General Store. If you're heading to the beach, coming from the beach, camping on the beach or on your way back to your hotel. This is a convenience store to pick up stuff you forgot or need. They've got Shave Ice. Roselini ice cream, coffee, food, $2 hot dogs, sweets, snacks and souvenirs like a Spam Musubi travel pillow. They also have hot musubi's ready to go.
google avatar

Royce A.

Yelp
Up near the register there is an amazing treat called "butter mochi" that is homemade by the family who owns the shop and is so gooey and delicious that my family talks about it for months after we have left. Totally worth the stop.
google avatar

Janice C.

Yelp
Love this place. Been coming here for over 20 years for butter mochi. So good! Get there early, or it's gone. Friendly people.
google avatar

Sheila K.

Yelp
Owners aren't aware of the check in offer. User beware. Shaved ice was pretty tasty. Get the ice cream on the bottom.
google avatar

Susan C.

Yelp
Stopped in here on our way to Wailea. Picked up the fried rice musubi with spam and the regular spam musubi. Cheap and tasty as a snack.
google avatar

Sidney S.

Yelp
What can I say about these guys. I love this family! I have lived on the island for a while and I always stop in and get a hot dog and some banana jerky. Such a cute little place with great local stuff. They make you feel right at home. It's a must stop on your way to Lahaina.
google avatar

Carry L.

Yelp
We always joke about the red hot dogs but that's the first stop our family makes getting off the plane. Always friendly and so much aloha comes from this store. Worth the stop!
google avatar

Yelp
What a sweet sweet place! Feels like a local General store with lovely staff. Perfect spot to run in and grab road supplies, enjoy a bit of Maui history.

Yelp
Great service! Had the best ice cream and shaved ice in Maui! The workers were very friendly and very nice people! Lots of outside seating and very clean! Would stop again in a heart beat!

Yelp
I love this place. Easy place to atop and get your supplies for a day trip out in this island. Nice family running this establishment.

Yelp
One of the best shave ice locations on Maui!!! Outstanding flavor selections... Greg was extremely nice... we will definitely be returning to this place soon!
google avatar

Amin T.

Yelp
Amazing shaved ice! Great service and tons of flavors! Super great price too! Mary was super helpful yesterday! One of the best shaved ices I've had on the island!
google avatar

Jo K.

Yelp
I still love this general store. It has bentos to go. Shaved ice and for me the musubi. I've been coming here for years and the prices are fair considering and the staff always great to chat with Today we came for musubi and pie but that's is another review. The musubi is unlike traditional sweet teriyaki sauce fried spam. This is more like boiled spam with furakai rice toppings with nori wrapping. You are either gonna love it or hate it But I love it for years it's a different style of musubi. Our family like chili sauce spread over the top of the rice. I like the fact that it has sent changed in years the food plus 2.00 kind of hard to beat.

Yelp
Right next door to Leoda's, this local stop looks like it's been here for years. Nothing fancy inside, just a family owned convenience store, but there's a small kitchen for plate lunches ($10). They also have bentos, shave ice, and some simple baked goods. The guava cheesecake ($4) looked good. If only Leoda's wasn't next door with their awesome pies. (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/GeXBFV0YMM-dQo2TIoWTuA?select=gkAtiqI90V6gaqABoVep1A) My favorite part was their wall of fame. Yelp
This site with the petroglyphs is located conveniently not too far and somewhat behind the Leoda's Kitchen & Pie Shop and the Olowalu General Store. We walked along a dirt path to the trail head. I saw cars driving up closer. But the trail was short and soon we were in front of the etching on rocks. It's hard that see with better lenses as we could not get closer. You need keen eyesight to see the etchings especially with the sun glare. We bought souvenirs at the quaint General Store afterwards which was like a bonus for this quick trip.

Anthony N.

Yelp
Sweet family owned store with the best Mexican food I've found in Maui! The dude making it is from Michoacán so you know it's the real deal. Opens 5am with hot breakfast options and coffee ready to go for the early commuter too. Super friendly people and my regular stop on way to work. So stoked I found this somewhat hidden gem!!
