Where to See Ruins of Past Olympics

"The first Canadian city to host the Summer Olympic Games, Montreal began building the ill-fated Le Stade Olympique to be the centerpiece of their 1976 event. Alas, despite the city’s intention of building the arena for the global games, the “Stade,” as it is known to locals, was incomplete by the time of its unveiling at the Summer Olympics. It took ten more years for site to be fully completed. It has since been used for baseball games, soccer matches, football games and Grey Cups (Canada’s Superbowl), auto shows, a Pope rally and countless rock concerts. It is even believed that Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters was inspired to write the band’s epic album, The Wall after playing the stadium in 1977. Designed by French architect Roger Taillibert, the building certainly is an innovative piece of work for its time. Among some of the building’s unique features are an inclined tower observatory which is the tallest in the world and a roof that was designed to be fully retractable. However, because of a flaw in the ceiling’s arrangement process it was tried a few times and soon deemed unsafe. The roof now stays put, except for the occasional piece that falls from it. Fortunately there haven’t been any injuries, so far.  In addition to the delayed completion and malfunctioning design, the stadium’s economic woes may be its lasting legacy. Due to the prolonged construction budget, which eventually topped out at over one billion dollars Canadian, the city of Montreal only finished paying for the stadium 30 years after the Olympics for which it was built. To this day most Montrealers heartbreakingly refer to it as “The Big Owe.”" - ATLAS_OBSCURA

As of August it’s currently through massive reconstruction. I’d recommend planning any visit after it’s done. There are some interesting things to experience while there but not too much to warrant a must see.

This place gets a 4-star rating because I do love the grounds and the overall vibe of the stadium. It was a great construction project back in the 70s, but we've been fixing it since then, thus the removal of a star. Nonetheless, it's a place to see.

Nice to visit the site where the 1976 summer Olympic’s took place. There is a guided tour, but we didn’t take it. We went inside the building where all the swimming events took place. You can sit in the stands and watch whatever swimming or diving activities are taking place. It’s a 20-30 minute drive from downtown Montreal and we spent 1.5 hours walking around the site. Paid parking is available onsite and there’s only a daily rate. Although there’s not a whole lot to do there, I’m glad I visited this historic Canadian site.

Went to see legendary Metallica, I think the place is too big so the sound wasn’t the best although I did enjoy the whole concert and was easy to get in. Very organized food was ok and drinks too not pricey at all.

This is a pretty nice spot in Montreal to brush up on your Olympic history. We did not head inside this time as we were headed out of town, but it appears they are working to upkeep the facilities.

We visited this site to go to the biodome. Both before and after that visit, we walked around the monstrosity that is Olympic Stadium. Although the grounds need some work, it's obvious that they are refurbishing the exterior. There is new paint in spots and they are either installing or repairing a funicular on top of the roof that is scheduled to open in 2026. There are signs in both French and English that tell about the 1976 Olympic games and highlights like Nadia Komaneci's perfect score. This is a great place to walk around in a leisurely way. There is a parking lot on site. We ended up paying $24 Canadian for the maximum rate.

Worth a trip to see this iconic stadium in person. Didn't get a chance to get inside. I was able to back when the Expos played there but that was 20+ years ago. The whole Olympic park is very nice and family friendly.

Yelp
I was spending a long weekend in Montreal in early Autumn, when I visited the Parc Olympique. I am a fan of the Olympics and religious about watching the events on TV and when possible attending an event, so I had to at least see the venue. Parc Olympique was the site of the 1976 summer Olympics. These are the Olympic games that propelled Nadia Comaneci to stardom. The venue is known for it's tower which is set at 45 degrees and affords a view of the Montreal skyline. It is 165 meters high. Presently it is closed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Note that when admission is possible it is closed on Mondays. The cost to climb the tower was $15 and if you add the cost of stadium parking $20 people hesitate to visit. Days when traffic is light you will be able to find street parking close by. Besides climbing the tower you can see the the Olympic size swimming pool which is still used by the Olympic diving and swimming team.. The 5 five rings of the Olympics are still up including the medal stand. The Biodome which replicates the four ecosystems found in the United States requires a separate admission cost. The Planetarium is adjacent to dome is worth seeing. Across the street, Maisonneuve Park is home to the Montreal Botanical Garden and Insectarium. Saputo soccer Stadium can be found here as well. The bottom line is that I would not recommend Parc Olympique for everyone but it was interesting to see for me since it is only a 10 minute drive from downtown Montreal and is a unique dome.

Yelp
It's a very cool looking piece of architecture. Montreal has some real gems; biosphere, habitat 67.... The newer addition VANS SKATEPARK is a fantastic new skatepark. Sections of the surrounding building are in need of revamping and redesign. Lot of DEAD SPOTS..

Yelp
Do you like being at a concert that feels and sounds like you are inside the belly of a whale? Then this is the place for you. Horrible horrible hooooorrible sound. It made me tres tres mal. Was I hearing Metallica or a sea creature dying? Who knows?

Yelp
2 stars earned because the place is well maintained. (not hard when rarely in use however) 3 stars reduced because staff have no idea whats going on. Can't tell you the point of no return for ticket scanners, everything is more expensive than the Bell Center yet 90% of merchants take cash only. Would be nice if there were actually ATMs in that case.

Yelp
Very good spot to visit. However, we didn't research in advance and on Mondays the tower is not open. However, the rest of the visit was very good and interesting. The buildings are very interesting and it's quiet easy to arrive by train.

Yelp
The Olympic Stadium is from the when the Olympics were in Montreal in 1976 I believe. Now you can tour the stadium and go up the tower for a panoramic view of the city. Beware though, parking is $20, and it's another $15-$20 for the tickets up the tower.
