Sub par sums it up. You come to expect anything goes with an Omni as their properties vary from flashy and hip (Nashville, downtown Dallas) to posh and old school (King Edward in Toronto) to slightly dreary and dated (Riverfront Omni in New Orleans). The Omni New Haven falls in with the slightly dreary and dated, unfortunately.
But it's not all bad! The people at reception are super nice, even late at night when you have annoying questions (who, me?) because you paid for parking before realizing that you handle it when checking in so that you're not charged every time you go in and out of the lot. I actually like the convenience of the lot rather than valet, so that you can immediately access your car.
The lobby is cozy, well-appointed and tastefully decorated for the holidays right now. Trying to think about anything else that I might like about the property, but I'm afraid it ends there, as the location isn't terribly ideally located either (not that I know New Haven well, but this area seems deserted at night). There's a rooftop bar and restaurant that close at the ridiculously early hour of 10pm so any hopes of returning for a night cap are dashed, unless you're an early bird.
I'm a black level member and one of the awesome perks at the Omni is the sweet room upgrades, as in double upgrades! I've stayed in baller suites that I have no business being in (well, that's a lie. I belong in them, but my wallet doesn't agree). Here, I received an extremely dreary room, tiny in comparison to other Omnis, with a view of the vents and crappy chain fast food shops.
Another perk: you get a loyalty ambassador reaching out to you before you stay in case you need anything. I rarely use this amenity, but when, say, you need something printed or pressed or a specific kind of snack waiting for you, it's kind of cool. No such ambassador reached out to me. My welcome amenity was a glass of wine, when in other Omnis, a bottle and a pretty decent food item (chef's specialty according to the website) has been waiting for me. There wasn't even a bottle of water in the room. Huge fail.
The gyms at most Omnis are practically at the level of a private club. Here that is not the case, rather a small, windowless suite of rooms with several ellipticals, treadmills, weight machines and free weights. The worst was the fact that there was no water. Rather, there WAS a large glass water dispenser that was just about empty. I tipped it to get the dregs and noticed grossness floating around at the bottom. Unacceptable.
I will not be staying here again. I wish the Omni would get it together and offer up some consistency. I've qualified for black again in 2019, but it'll be my final year because I much prefer Starwood properties and smaller boutique hotels.
