On the Grid : Omotesando Hills

"This luxury shopping complex, designed by famous Japanese architect, Ando Tadao, is an Omotesando landmark. Over 130 shops and restaurants are beautifully laid out in a rectangular spiral that climbs 6 stories high (3 basement floors and 3 stories above ground). If not to shop, visit the complex for its amazing architecture." - Misa Matsuda Maraun

"Tadao Ando's mall on Omotesando Dori is an architectural delight. In an interior skylit atrium, a spiral walkway ascends from the basement up to the third floor. Most of the shops are high-end: fashion designers, jewelry stores, and cosmetics, while Pass the Baton is a secondhand shop of select clothes, antiques, jewelry, and housewares. Vegetable-focused restaurants include Yasaiya-Mei and Kyo-Oyasai-Bar Mei; though they are not strictly vegetarian, both offer seasonal and local produce. Chocolate aficionados can indulge at the Jean-Paul Hévin boutique."

This is the posh area home to luxury brands and boutiques. Besides this high end mall, don’t forget to explore the lanes off the main road. Stylish shops are strewn everywhere. Perfect place to learn about Japanese sense of fashion and aesthetics

Modern shopping mall. Over 4 floors. Slanting floors. A number of shops. Has toilets

Ando fans must come and see how he max put the use of the plot to keep the aura of the place while give roominess for the shoppers

This is probably as commercial as Ando can design for a shopping mall. You don’t really see the signature concrete walls inside the mall, but you can see his iconic angular design.

Love this place. Posh but cozy. My family always finds time to visit whenever we're in Tokyo. High end and eclectic brands have great curated presence here. The mall is laid out uniquely with a continuous ramp that takes one all the way up to the restaurant level. There is a great children's store with nice small playground for young children on basement level. The restaurants above are great mix. Our fave is Kageyamarou Chinese Restaurant though. Everything is well made and the price is still quite reasonable, especially considering its location.

A cute little district full of retro-hip clothing and fashion stores. On the main throughfare is full of designer and luxury boutiques. The night Christmas lights are beautiful.

Visited 表參道之丘 today and I'm still in awe of the architecture. The combination of sleek lines, intricate details, and the clever use of space is simply genius. It's a perfect example of how design can elevate our surroundings and create a memorable experience.

Yelp
Ritzy and expensive area of Tokyo. Lots of high end expensive stores. I would say the general vibe also feels like there are expensive one off boutiques here as opposed to just expensive brand stores you can find in any department store with high end goods. Nice area for some good food as well.

Yelp
If you love brand name stuff, this place is for you. It was very clean and nicely decorated. Big beautiful chandeliers by the entrance. Very high end.

Yelp
This is another shopping district in Tokyo that is right near Takeshita Street and Harajuku. If you are into luxury brand or hypebeast shopping, this is the place for you. There's not much to do besides shop, besides some nice cafes here and there. I didn't care too much for it since I had visited Ginza and Shibuya.

Yelp
Beautiful design of a mall. This is the place to shop for luxury brands if you're into it. It wasn't the place for me as I rather have practical things from good brand names than buying something for just its name. There are only a few cafes/food shops so if you want food, best to go outside of here. The street has a bunch of high end stores too. If you're from Vancouver, Canada, then this is like Alberni Street.

Yelp
Stopped into Omotesando Hills for some refreshments since we had spent a good chunk of the day exploring the city and shopping. Since the sign outside the building said there was a juice bar located on the 3rd basement floor, we ventured inside to quench our thirst. The architecture of the mall and the asymmetrical alignment of the building was visually interesting and left an impression, one that can't be easily forgotten. Even going up the escalators, you can see the unusual angles. We finally found Green Bar located next to or I guess, inside Urban Research. The corner bar served coffee and fresh blended juice, which was exactly what we needed. I got the apple, carrot, ginger and celery blend while my friend got the green juice, which consisted of mustard spinach, apple and banana. Both drinks were ¥480 and it included pulp, so you're getting all the nutrients too! There's a small seating area to rest and enjoy your drinks or food since they do have a small menu of sandwiches, bagels and soup. Very limited menu. It's a cute space to rest at before you continue shopping or head off to your next destination.

Yelp
In 2005, a shopping complex known as Omotesando Hills was created in the popular avenue in Shibuya known as Omotesando. The area often referred to as Tokyo's Champs-Elysees, Mori Building created the complex (which was designed by Tadao Ando) that would contain 130 shops and 38 apartments. While the shopping center makes Omotesando seem like Beverly Hills thanks to its stores which include Jimmy Choo, Ugg, Bottega Veneta, Helen Kaminski Australia, Dior Perfume & Beauty, Shu Uemura, , Balmain Paris, Urban Research, junhashimoto, Valentino, Dartin Bonaparto, Hugo Boss, Chloe, Mark & Lona, mikomori, Y-3 and many more. The complex cost $330 million and received controversy as the old Dojunkai apartments created in 1927 were turned into gallery boutiques and the area is become a fashion mecha. But the controversy is nothing new as Akihabara went from electric town to Otaku and idol mecha, Omotesando is convenient for those who are in Harajuku/Aoyama shopping areas and the fact that Shibuya/Minato are nearby is an added plus. In fact, Omotesando is one of my favorite places to visit. I suppose, depending on the individual, some may find Omotesando Hills way to trendy or too expensive for their tastes. But for those who dig Omotesando and the variety of shopping and restaurants that are in the area, will no doubt dig the vibe of Omotesando and also the Omotesando Hills shopping complex. It's just a really cool place for me to visit each time I'm in Japan and never grow tired of visiting the place.

Yelp
Upscale and fancy mall. Lots of boutiques and really nice shops. Came here originally for an art show hosted within the mall's gallery/atrium area. Despite it being a mall setting it was all really well done and you forgot you were actually in a mall. Only got to explore the shops a little bit, and mostly made use of the few seating areas that were available. Given the surrounding area I'm not sure what makes this particular mall very special as there were plenty of shopping centers around it with much fancier shops for fashion, food, and the sort. However, there are some very luxurious brands located in this mall so if you're looking for that one particular brand-- this might be a good stop to search. If you're in the area wandering it might be worth exploring in leisure, but there are definitely more interesting things in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Insanely beautiful architecture polluted with poorly designed ads and for reasons unknown - management really doesn't want you to take a photo. This is the real crime, you have a world renowned building and wish to hide it from the view of the public. Weird.

Yelp
A fancy little mall with fancy little shops! But we didn't come here for the shopping. We came here for the food! They have a couple food options like a French Bistro, a American Burger restuaurant, a Sake Bar, and of course, your favorite Japanese Sushi. We had the Japanese Sushi which I must say is FAR better than the sushi we had at the Tsukiji fish market. (I guess being the fish market, I thought it should be more "fresh". ) I don't know the English translation of this Japanese Restaurant but It's on the 3rd floor next to the burger restaurant. If you don't want to wait in a line, I suggest you get to the restaurant promptly at 11:00 p.m. If you get there at 11:30, you will wait in a line which isn't fun when you're hungry. All restaurants start to have a line as most of them are not big spaces.

Yelp
This mall is huge! There are up two six levels here. The way that this place is structured looks pretty cool too! You can use escalators to get to he next level or you can keep walking and the floor will slowly move up to the next floor, it's pretty weird right?! Be prepared to spend since the stores here are pretty pricey and more on the higher end. If you can't find a store you are looking for, the information help desk can help you! And they are super super nice and friendly. They have a different map which I thought was really helpful and more helpful than the mall's directory. They can speak a little bit of English too so that was pretty helpful as well. There are more brand name stores outside of the mall. If you can't find a specific brand that you're looking for, there could be a high chance that it is located outside of the mall, you just need to ask the information desk girls for the direction. Great place to go shopping! Make sure you have your passports because most of the stores offer tax free for travelers!

Yelp
A great spot for luxury shopping...a unique set-up architecturally, there are a ton of spots to visit for clothes and unique items like cards or gadgets for the kitchen. There seems to be limited seating considering all the shops and people. Definitely worth visiting.

Yelp
Probably the most high class luxury mall in the whole Omotesando! Nice design and atmosphere with a lot of famous brands, the only things is that is a bit tiny and narrow compared to other malls and can get very crowded on weekends!

Yelp
Omotesando hills is a shopping area for the people with a thicker wallet so to speak. If you are aiming for luxurious brands or maybe to have a fancy lunch or dinner this is the place to go to. Although this place did not quite fit my budget or lifestyle it was still enjoyable to walk through and just have a look. The area is quite beautiful in a modern way and do have less expensive stores too to visit. All in all a very nice place to visit, but is not a must-go-to place. Tokyo has so much to offer and this is just one of a thousan places (at least) to see!

Yelp
Nice place to eat dinner and wander around. Technically, it is a luxury high end shopping mall of sorts with stores like Jimmy Choo, Harry Winston, Dior, and Dolce & Gabbana, but they also have some Japanese stores and cute whimsical stores. Shopping wise I haven't done a lot, but I like wandering around and the architecture of the place is pretty cool :) The bottom floors have some unique luxury shops whereas the top floor is mostly focused on restaurants. I especially like the christmas illumination here. My favorite is the Yasai ya mei restaurant, which offers amazing food. The Jean Paul Hevin is a must go if you love chocolate and macaroons. They also have cafes down on the lower floors to provide a short shopping break if you need one.

Yelp
I'm not huge into luxury shopping. I'm more of a local boutiques and bargain shopper. So I couldn't handle staying here too long. But of course if I had the money to just throw around on luxury items, this would be the place. They have almost every premium designer you can think of, it's navigational friendly and easy to walk around because of the large spaces. There are a lot of cute upscale cafes and restaurants. The building is extremely modern and very beautiful. Again, not my thing - but I can see the appeal. This place was definitely where all the tourists were.

Yelp
I have lived in Osaka. I seldom come to Tokyo. But whenever I come up, I would like to drop in here. The time when I came here with a husband for the first time is that it was just before Dojyunkai apartment was dismantled. The apartment building stood in a long rectangular-shaped site. The mossed old tasteful apartment reminded me of former times with nostalgia. Sorry, get back to the topic. Now the new ferroconcrete building was built as Omotesando Hills. Its inside structure is a little complicate. The designer of this building is a world famous architect Mr. A. His architectures are splendid!! But I often get lost in the buildings designed by him. As for Omotesando Hills, fashionable shops dealing in clothes, accessories, shoes, restaurants gather. Just looking was enjoyable. I would like to have lunch or dinner here, but price was a little higher, so I gave it up. I was very glad to see slight relics of Dojyunkai apartment remain. I like its retro atmosphere. Some events take place here. I would like to come here to take part in them someday.

Yelp
We went here for a free classical concert (held on J.S. Bach's birthday). The layout is kind of special. There's a slope going through the ground to the top indoors and it's kind of special. I'm a kind of, well, very budget-conscious person, so this won't be a place for me to shop, but enjoyed Ben&Jerry's on the first floor :)

Yelp
Great shopping place. Though it does lack the local Japanese brands, you can still find very cute stuff here. Stroller friendly since there are no steps.
