On the Grid : Once Upon a Tart

"A two-part bakery and coffee shop, this neighbourhood staple has been around for over twenty years. It's a great spot to chill out and lunch, or coffee and snack. Bonus: it's laptop friendly with free Wifi." - Julia Guo

I really love this little cafe! The coffee is tasty and there are plenty of great pastries to choose from if your hungry. There is always a spot to sit and enjoy the atmosphere. Great service

Warm atmosphere; tiny, crowded, but surprisingly quiet venue (given it is featured in different guides), good for a nice chat with a friend or parent, comfortable for having a solo lunch, brunch or breakfast. Concept & concise menu is delicious.

Great coffee and pastries; a little pricey but still worth it. Definitely enjoyed coming here in the morning before the rush. Really love the interior and decor.

It is enough to have some coffee and bread Bread is not too sweet but some kinds of deserts are bland

No line unlike other famous desert places nearby. Tried chocolate peanut butter tart with marshmallow on top, flourless chocolate cake, and apple tart. All were tasty

Nice food but the waitress was so rude that I will not be returning. As soon as we finished eating our sandwiches and soup the waitress marched over and demanded that we free up our table in a very pushy manner. We were hungry and so we had eaten our meal within 20 minutes and had barely started on our drinks. Surrounding us were other patrons who were nursing the same cup of coffee they had been when we arrived. This was upsetting, and also slightly strange as my husband was actually at the counter ordering more food for dessert. A more professional and gracious waitress would have requested many others to vacate their table before us, or gathered the many spare chairs and placed them around the spare table available in the room. What should have been an enjoyable meal became an unpleasant experience.

I would've given it 5 stars if they didn't renovate and make all the changes. I miss Cleo - she was the best! Someone needs to bring her back. Sad to see that she doesn't work here anymore. I used to come in everyday, and she always knew what I wanted, and how to pack it for me on the go (2 coffees, double lids to avoid spilling, in a brown bag). Now, I get coffee with no lids at all - even when I say I'm taking it to go. The hot chocolate isn't the same either. I remember drinking it and actually finding pieces of chocolate at the bottom of my cup. Now, they use some sort of syrup or melted chocolate - just doesn't taste the same. I still come in time to time to grab some coffee from the coffee place next door (I think they're still renovating the main cafe), but it's gonna take some time to get used to the changes.

Highlights for me were the chocolate/ganache/sea salt/caramel tart. A buttery flakey tart with a rich chocolate ganache that matched well with the sea salt and caramel. Very yummy if you have a sweet tooth. Great egg dishes as the poached eggs and scrambled eggs were very fluffy pillows of goodness. Great for brunch. A wonderful french parisian feel to the cafe and had wonderful service. Great place for a date or to relax. Great fresh ground coffee as well. Also has a take out coffee shop next door.
