Google
Best brunch ever!! A wonderful experience. The meal was amazingly delicious with lots of variety. The potatoes were crisp outside and soft in the middle, the fritter was tasty, the eggs were cooked perfectly and the sauce was delectable. The coffee was rich and tasty. Fantastic friendly and prompt service. A vibrant and welcoming atmosphere. Definitely the best brunch I have ever had.

Delicious coffee, great service and even better food. The staff are fantastic. Recommended.

Ordered the breakfast burrito because of the raving reviews and it did not disappoint! I think it could benefit from some sort of hot sauce or pickle (jalapeno maybe) but it was still well made and tasted good.

Went up for the weekend with my partner and decided to head to One Penny Black to have brunch... this place has such a wonderful atmosphere and friendly service ✨️ The food and drinks came out super fast which we were able to enjoy all of it at the same time. Highly recommend giving this place a go 😊✨️

Had a takeaway breakfast burrito from here the other week and it was fantastic. The eggs were very well cooked and chicken seasoned well. It’s now the benchmark for my breakfast burrito.

I have been going here many times and I have always received the best service you can possibly get they make you feel a very special customer . Food is made with care and attention to detail and tastes just as good as it looks. Place is very clean and has a very good atmosphere. I’m not an easy person to please specially when it comes to service attitude but this place ticks all the boxes. Look at the picture of what I had for breakfast this morning, everything I love was on that plate. 😋🤤 👍👍👍👍👍

I just had the greatest oat milk flat white of my life. And it was at One Penny Black. With the exceptional quality of the coffee, friendly staff and cozy, rustic vibe with a modern touch that a cafe should have, I cannot recommend this place any more.

Yelp
This is one of the reasons that I shouldn't skip cafes that offer breakfast in the hope of finding one that is better. Well, it came down to this one, and honestly, this one was nowhere near better than the previous I had visited. In a way, the breakfast options were limited, and not really what I was looking for, though I decided that since I was hungry I would make a choice nonetheless. The service was okay, but I found the tea to be a little too strong. It really isn't one that I'd be hurrying back to any time soon.

Yelp
This was the best meal I had in Newcastle, and it was only a brunch. But hey, smashed avo is the greatest thing ever, particularly when it's gussied up with some fancy herbs and fancy toast and a good crank of rock salt that sucks into the green mess and jazzes it up like a saxophone welded to the place where your arm is meant to go. Bonus points to the old beardy fella busking across the road. Dude was singing the blues like his dog ran away and his wife just left with his best friend and all he had left was his guitar and a pocket full of stories. Also next door there's a donut place where you can get maple bacon and nutella donuts for a cheeky dee-zert after coffee and toast. That never hurts.

Yelp
I came here 4 years ago and have a great experience, but it seems to have changed a bit since then. The coffee wasn't as good as it used to be, but wasn't terrible. Same with the food, not as good as I remember but fine. Bit of a disappointing experience but nothing catastrophic. There are better places in Newcastle these days.

Yelp
Pn a wet & windy October afternoon we blew in from Sydney at 4.00pm. Hunter St was completely deserted. Yelp to the rescue once again. One Penny Black delighted with a slice of home baked cardamon cake and perfectly brewed coffee. Make an effort to find - not numbered & parking around the corner. I can imagine on a sunny day seated in the mall with a sour dough toastie or all day brekkie would be divine!

Yelp
You know these guys are serious about coffee by their thick rimmed glasses, beanies, skinny jeans and flannelette check shirts. Or maybe that's a dedication to a hipster lifestyle. Surround yourself with the photos of mustached-men along one wall and enjoy the Blackstar roast (Brisbane, represent!) or a selection of single origins. There's also a great range of gluten-free toasties and brioche with ricotta, fresh banana, honey, cinnamon and almonds. When we rocked up mid-Sunday morning the place was busy but not overwhelmingly packed and our order was delivered to our table swiftly. One Penny Black may not be an official part of the Hunter Street Renew Newcastle project but they're bringing a new flavour to the strip and I can't wait to see what standard these guys set for the rest of the street.

Yelp
AMAZING breakfast. One menu item was just simply called "breakfast plate." I ordered it and received the most amazing granola I've ever eaten with yogurt and strawberries. It also came with toast, avocado, and a poached egg (that I had to construct into avocado toast myself). The egg and avocado has some herbs on them, but the best part was the addition of brown sugar. My avocado toast was sweet, and it was so yummy! My only complaint was that the knife wasn't quite sharp enough, so it was difficult to cut the bread.

Yelp
Hunter St is coming alive again - and One Penny Black is a good cafe. I stopped in here on a trip over from Perth, if there's something we Perthians know, it's breakfast. We have to have great breakfasts to kill time on Sundays as the shops open so late... Anyway, I had avocado on sourdough and a cappucino, both were great, and the avocado was simple and delicious, the chef didn't faff about with it, just avo, rocket, and lemon on sourdough, with sea salt and black sesame seeds. Perfect. I'll be back next time, that's for sure.

Yelp
I can't work out why this doesn't have a higher rating. It is easily the best coffee place in Newcastle and the food is ridiculous. So simple and so damn good. One Penny is family owned and run and it shows. Although it's getting busier and busier they still strive to know people by name. Their new location (further along the mall, near Wolfe st.) has a food menu, but their specials and changing bagel/pastries are where it's at. When it's busy and you can't find a seat, still take a number and just hang out on a nearby bench. They'll see you and take your order out. Be prepared to wait for your coffee between 8-9am and your food between 11am-1pm. It's a popular place for good reason. Well behaved dogs are welcome.

Yelp
$7 pour-over. Standard light, sour, bitter blend the locals love. Not for this foreign tongue. Seems like a nice place and the food menu looks good.

Yelp
My wife and I shared a vegetarian big breakfast, it was delicious. The coffee was also top notch. If you are in Newcastle and craving a good coffee, this place will definitely sort you out.

Yelp
This espresso bar has recently moved location on Hunter Street. The decor is beautiful, and there is definitely a hipster vibe to it. The coffee is made with care and tastes fantastic. They also offer cold pressed coffee, which must definitely be tried if it's available.

Nick S.

Yelp
Probably one of the best coffee places I have been a long while (coming from a non-Novocastrian) snuck away on the edge of the mall. Also very polite and helpful staff. A much needed example of opening up some life on a very quiet mall.

Greg H.

Yelp
Three coffees. Nobody happy, a filthy spoon, coffee weak and cold, nowhere near correct serving temperature. Cant understand how it could be highly rated. Came here because of ratings.

Christopher Q.

Yelp
One of the two best coffee shops in Newcastle! Well done Garth!

Yelp
Best consistant coffee.... Black Star beans are the best I have had. Great friendly service. Melts are amazing.
