The Best Historic Restaurants to Visit in the U.S. Now - AFAR

"Originally the Oasis Tavern and in business for more than 75 years in the tiny town of Harrison by Lake Coeur d’Alene, this place—named for owner Charlie Jenicek’s generous pours—serves bar classics from wings to tater tots and embodies a modest small-town tavern atmosphere." - Pat Tompkins

One Shot Charlies

Google
Server was excellent; attentive and knowledgeable. Ambiance is a perfect match for this sleepy, quaint, historic, lakeside community. Big bar selections. Pretty good sandwich selections which came out from kitchen very fast. We dined indoors vs the outdoor deck — but it’s definitely an indoor/outdoor vibe with shutters, doors and windows open to enjoy the great outdoors. Located half a block off the main corridor (ID 97) downhill toward the lakefront.

Google
Solid food, awesome atmosphere in Harrison. I had "The Spade" which is basically a club sandwhich, it was quite good. My wife "happy hippie" pita and was very pleased as well.

Bethany L.

Google
Our normally grumpy toddler had big smiles today because Jamie made jokes to her, asked her questions and gave her high fives. It was super sweet :) The food is delicious and I love that the tater tots are fried in tallow! Great atmosphere as well. We’ll be back in the future!

Google
Food is one click better than you would expect at a typical dive bar. Reuben was especially good. No air conditioning, which is not great when it is 104 outside, but they do have big fans. Music is a bit loud and raucous for an aging baby boomer.

McKenzie C.

Google
Amazing spot to hit after a long day on the lake! Perfect for all group sizes ! I’m gluten free and always have options. Amazing drinks , super kind staff , yummy shots and killer smash burgers ! A must hit every time I’m here

Google
Had a great family dinner at Charlie’s last night. They were short staffed but it didn’t seem like it. Service was good (Tyler was an exceptional waiter) and our food was served fast considering the place was packed and they were under staffed. Drinks were good. Would definitely go back.

Google
What is going on at One Shot Charlie's. The owner took our "to go" order, came back 20 minutes later to say "we don't do to go orders on Saturday (?) Why didn't she say that when she took the order? Took the order again, making it a to go order? I realize they don't have enough employees but something is off with the owner. Thank goodness we told others to go to The Gateway.

Google
If you are driving the scenic route around Lake Coeur D'Alene, or Harrison Idaho is your destination, you've got to stop by One Shot Charlie's. The building is fun (outdoor seating in summer months), the decor is interesting and the food is fantastic! We had the garlic Parmesan fries with a beef dip and a Reuben, and both were outstanding. We also got an appetizer (forget the name) that was basically HUGE tator tots stuffed with cream cheese, jalapenos, corn and other yumminess with a fantastic fry sauce. Our only lament is we didn't stop by years ago. The next time we had this way, One Shot Charlie's is a MUST.

Yelp
We stopped here to grab some drinks and tacos one evening. It has a chill vibe and a live music stage, although there weren't any musicians on the day we went. We ordered a couple of taco plates -- one with Alaskan cod and the other with BBQ pulled pork, along with a couple of cocktails - a mojito and a whiskey screwdriver. The staff was friendly, and our drinks were good. The tacos were just about ok, nothing to rave about. They also seemed to be having some taco promotion that day, but the server didn't mention anything about it to us; I'm not sure why.

Yelp
Perfect spot for some lunch and a beer after a long bike ride on the trail. All of our food was fresh and tasty. My wife loved her salad and the nachos were super tasty with a really good cheese sauce. The pork was fresh and the kids chicken tenders were good as well. Happy we decided to stop and eat here! Our server was real nice as well. Visited on 6/6/24.

Yelp
DO NOT GO!! We got our bill after a few drinks and gave a generous tip. After we left they realized they gave us the wrong bill when we had left. They chased us down threatening to call the cops saying we didn't pay our tab as we obviously did. Talk about poor customer service, communication, and unstable workers. The only criminal act is charging $60 for 4 drinks!!!

Yelp
The service was the absolute worse. I thought that maybe it was just poor service, but I think that it was racism. When we first arrived we were treated very well, then the member of our group who isn't white showed up. We were then treated coldly. People were seated after us, were served and treated well. This is the reason I feel confident with letting you know about our experience. We went 10 minutes before we realized that we had to get our own menus, even though the waitress brought menus to everyone around us. It took another 40 minutes to get our drinks. The food came out another 30 minutes later, except the member of our group, who wasn't exactly white waited another 15 minutes to get his house Salad, which is all that he had ordered. I had been to One shot Charlie's before and loved it. However after this blatant racism, we will never be going back. I wish that you had been there to witness this. I guess being a white woman I am not used to this. It is just very sad that people are like this.

Sally M.

Yelp
Great hospitality, casual rustic atmosphere, nice hideaway. We were greeted in a welcoming manner, and the waitress was super friendly and attentive.

Yelp
Very small lakeside community -- population under 300 folks that love North Central Idaho. The Idaho Highway 97 (Scenic Byway Around Lake Coeur d' Alene) runs through this cozy town that appears to thrive on the tourism trade. Only 2-3 joints that serve food and I'm glad we discovered this venue. It's not fancy. But high on customer service. Modest menu with burgers and sandwiches (think pup/bar food). A full bar that's wrapped in vintage antique woodwork takes up one corner. Outdoor seating is an option -- although quite frankly the main seating area is a seamless transition from the outdoors with windows, shutters and doors wide open to appreciate the summer winds off the lake. Our server was excellent. Went above the call of duty. Very knowledgeable & attentive. In a tourist setting like this, attending to folks from all over the USA that ended up in Idaho for a week -- you could forgive someone who seemed tired & exasperated by the endless repeated questions over and over. Didn't happen here. Not with this happy as a lark wait-staff-person! BTW we enjoyed our meal. Who knows. This place may end up on tv someday featured in a dive-bar episode!

Yelp
Really messy food (that's a good thing!)! The Bahn Mi sandwich was huge, spicy, and so well done with lots of fries. Dipping sauce is an extra charge. Friendly, timely, and accurate service by Naomi.

Marie P.

Yelp
Have been here twice and the service was awful both times (worse the second). We waited almost 20 min for them to take our order. Drinks came quickly, but food took over 30 min & was cold when it arrived. I had to ask twice for the silverware I was never given & still it never came so my husband finally just got up & got me some. My salad (walnut & apple) was good, but husband ordered a pulled pork sandwich with tots. They brought fries, not tots. We brought it to the attention of the waitress, who said "oh, sorry" & turned and walked away. We never saw her again until 15 min after we had finished eating when she finally walked by & we had to ask her to bring the check. Of course they charged the full price even though they brought us wrong food. Only get 2 stars because my salad was good everything else barely deserves 1 star.

Yelp
Great service, big screen TV for games. A really great view! Huckleberry drinks are super yummy!

Brenda R.

Yelp
The owner of One Shot Charlies does not understand customer service. She is rude and crude. Do not go to this restaurant with family, children or dogs you will not be welcome.

Yelp
This place has an amazing vibe! We sat at the bar and our bartender was talkative, witty, very helpful with food and beverage recommendations as well as had a wonderful personality! Highly recommend this place for a relaxing, casual evening if you're looking for good food and a good drink!

Tania P.

Yelp
Love this place! The staff was amazing especially Gabe who was bartending. The food was delicious and my favorites were the chicken wings, the tater barrels and E.D.I asparagus. Will definitely be back next time we are back in town.

Yelp
Fun times great party atmosphere but food is just ok. Pizza is your best choice second option is burger and fries. They have struggled with supplies who the hell runs out of C02 the week before the Fourth of July? Well they managed to 6 of us went here for lunch and drinks could not help us no cranberry for the vodka if you wanted a straight shot your in luck if not screwed. I offered to takes the boat back home to get them a bottle If C02 they said no they had some coming in next couple days. I also recommended they call up to the grocery store who would have delivered to the mixer supply's like cranberry. If I owned a bar or restaurant I would be stocked up prior to the biggest holiday weekend of the year. But we do love it here.

Yelp
In historic Harrison, ID. Sat outside on balcony. Ordered a shot, lemon drop, waitress came out with a big glass poured over ice type lemon drop drink. She quickly realized it was the wrong drink and returned with the shot, which was good! Town was recovering from post 4th of July weekend. Beautiful day

Yelp
First, I don't like the classification of a "Dive Bar," I think that is inaccurate and should be revised by yelp. One Shot Charlie's is a very popular bar/restaurant in historic Harrison, Idaho. There are only a few places To eat on Lake Coeur d'Alene, and with the Harrison marina close by (within 2 blocks) this is definitely a destination spot for many boaters. The area is equally popular for cyclists and Harley riders, so during summer months OSC is a hub of commotion, and people watching can be a ton of fun. Also during the summer most Friday and Saturday nights there is live music, and with only a few exceptions the bands have been good. The food at OSC is very good. I would classify it as "upscale pub." Burgers are great, as are the pulled pork sandwiches, their Reuben, and my go-to is the amazing saucy chicken sando. I probably ate there 20 plus times this summer and ordered the saucy chicken sando 3/4 of the time. It's that good, and just doesn't get old. Fries are so good, and the salads are always fresh. Pizza is also good and ordered by many. While I generally enjoys a couple cold IPAs when I am there; one of the owners, Jordan, is a super nice guy who is manning their full bar. I can't comment on the cocktail quality since I don't drink hard alcohol. When the winter months roll around and I have to pull the boat, I often daydream about being back on the lake and eating at OSC. For me, it's not just a bar/restaurant, it's a happy hangout where I spend many of my summer hours with family and friends. The service is very good, as is the food. Prices for lake food are reasonable. Make sure to check out their merch store after you eat, and take home a souvenir. You just cannot go wrong with a visit to One Shot Charlie's, and I cannot day enough positive things about it. I think this winter I may even take the drive around the lake and enjoy an off-season meal or two. COVID has hurt many small restaurants out there, and I'm certain that OSC has not been immune to this economic downturn. I do love the fact that when they apparently received much pressure to close from the city, they defied that demand and doubled down, clearly stating on their menu that if you wanted to exercise your freedom and take whatever perceived risk to eat out during a pandemic, that was our individual choice; and they would not cave to the hand wringers and bed wetters. I love that attitude. 'Murcia. Five stars, two thumbs up, and a place in my heart. OSC is very special to me, and I sincerely hope anyone who reads this review will take the trip to Harrison and enjoy them as well. If there ever comes a day when OSC is no longer open, it will be a sad day on Lake CDA for certain.

Yelp
I start this review with a preface: We were a 9 top table made up of 8 adults and one child, 4 of the adults who had been in food and customer service for many years. When we sat the bartender came over to take our drink order. there were a couple of people sitting in the bar with another table not far from us. When the bartender started to take our drink order we shared that we would be on different checks to which she said "we will just worry about it at the end of the meal". Okay, no worries I guess. We ordered our round of drinks and then food. The food came out perfect and was good for the price. At the end of the meal we asked for our checks. The bartender came over with a receipt and asked that someone mark which items go on which bill. Slightly annoying, especially because we asked for the bill to be split at the start, but we marked everything and what bill it went on. The bartender came back to explain the her system does not actually allow for her to move the "drinks" from one ticket to another. She asked if it would be okay to just add up the cost of the items we already divided for her and just charged us for that amount. It would mean not getting a detailed receipt but it made her job easier, so we agreed --no worries. We sat and wait for her to complete this before storming back over, throwing the receipt on the table and stating "I dont have time to figure this out" and walked away. What does that mean, isnt that your job? She had also taken the pen, so we had to track down the waitress to ask her for a pen so we could do the math ourselves. We added up the cost of all of the products and gave her their receipt back with the cost of each meal and the cards for each (we even labeled each by name to make it easy). The bartender comes back again and says that we were 7.00 short. I added it all again, we were correct. Come to find out we did not add in the tax (what even if the tax rate, and how would you expect me to know that?). The bartender said things like "sorry for making your life a living hell" and "I am the worst bartender dont even tip me I dont deserve it". My party has been in this industry a long time, and have never dined and not tipped. It took half an hour for us to make our own bill (incorrectly because of tax, apparently) and settle up. All of this sucked, but I would not have written a review over it, I just would not have returned. However, three of us went to the bathroom after the meal and the group went outside. As we were walking from the bathroom to the door we could hear the bartender talking extremely poorly of us to the waitress as if we had done something wrong. We thought we were gracious patrons who took time to go above and beyond for the bartender who we tried to help from the start. If you are going to talk shit, at least do it where the guests you are talking about cant hear you... We love stopping in Harrison when we are on the lake, but we will never stop here again. I can not imagine what it is like when there are more then a couple of tables and a couple of people at the bar overwhelm the staff to this point.

Yelp
Horrible service, walked in with no greeting. We asked if we should seat ourselves, after walking up to a server and we were told, "yeah...I guess." Sat at the window bar for 10 minutes and not one of the 4 servers came to our table to provide a menu or say hello. We then noticed a restaurant across the street and got up and left. Guess what? We were greeted and had a beer within 3 minutes!

Yelp
Best Pizza in the Coeur d'Alene Lake Region! SITREP We were just getting ready to pontoon on Coeur d'Alene Lake, but we had not eaten anything yet to sustain us for our 5 HR lake-breaking. But thank our lucky stars that One Shot LLC was just up the ramp-area and back in the brick patio courtyard because we were able to go in and order Pizzas. THE MENU We got a Hawaiian Pizza and a Meat-Veggie Combo. Both pizza pies were amazing, and there was so much left, we had midnight-snack worthy treats for two nights in a row in addition to the lunch we got them at. The pizza-pies are prepared from scratch, with dough twirled and thrown, lots of sauce, cheese, veggies, and meat strewn all over the pie as I watched, and then gracefully slid into an authentic pizza-oven and baked to perfection. This pizza fires on all pistons. THE STAFF Props to the Bartender who doubled as our lunch-server. The guy was amazing in his customer service skills, kept all of our drinks filled, even offered milk in sippy cups to my two little nephews - Bradley (6) and Zygfryd (2) - and even boxed up the remaining pizza in containers for us to take with us on the pontoon trip (even though we ended up saving the pizza for later). THE LOWDOWN Easily the best pizza experience I've had in the Coeur d'Alene Lake area.

Yelp
Inside and outside seating. Food was good and service was okay. Loved the pirate punch, It was delicious!
google avatar

Bob M.

Yelp
Nice location and only game in town. The sandwiches look fine but the pizza is an embarrassment. Not only was the pizza cold but the crust looked and tasted like something you'd find under a 100 watt bulb in a display case at an off-brand gas station. Management should be embarrassed by the pizza served in this place. I can't believe anyone orders the pizza on a second visit. Our waitress did not appreciate my rejection of what is undoubtedly the worst pizza I have ever had but she did take it off the bill without too much fuss. If you eat here stick to the sandwiches and avoid the pizza at all costs! Were it not for the pizza, this place deserves three stars.
google avatar

DeAnna W.

Yelp
When you close during the summer on days people here vacationing your actually hurting the whole town of Harrison as nobody comes no to the other businesses
google avatar

Amy P.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING!! Best food and prices on lake CDA!! The staff here is always fast and friendly and it is a great place for the whole family. We have purchased lots of cool swag at the swag shop and the new logo rocks!! If you have not been here, give it a shot, you will not disappointed.

Yelp
Stopped in after a long ride on the Trail of the Coeur d'Alene. Took about 10 minutes to get a menu and a drink. Took about another 10 minutes to get someone to come back to take my order. I ordered my check and did not give them anymore of my time. I don't know if the food is good or bad. I could understand if they were real busy, but they were not. I still never got my straw.
google avatar

Deacon B.

Yelp
This place is busy and full of drunken boaters so yes it was pretty fun. I overheard a woman promising her husband that she would behave as they left. Do not order pizza here, it seems that the crust was prefabricated by Boboli. We also had an iceberg wedge, not bad. A Jeager shot was in order to compliment the bars name and well it was a full shot all right. Beer is served in plastic cups like at a car race beer garden. Why the f can't we all agree that this is terrible and beer should never be served in plastic cups? I know it's some losers fault for drinking too much and smashing one on the ground but we publicly shame that person and clean up and move on right? I digress having started this review stating the place was full of drunken boaters.

Tonya C.

Yelp
The hours are posted on the door!!! Asked the waitress their hours to confirm....3rd time I've driven 45 miles round trip they have been closed when I've been there at least 2 hrs before the posted time. To say the least, I'm pissed and won't waste my time driving out there. Why not change your times and be consistent since we are so limited to places to go.'? Blah blah blah. I'm still not happy

Janice J.

Yelp
Came in to grab some lunch and a beer while working on our property not far away. We placed our order and half way through eating our food had an empty glass pushed out. Our server was busy and didn't get an opportunity to come back to the table. After waiting a while I decided to go to the bar to grab another beer due to the young gal bartender was just chatting. When I approached she asked if I had a problem. I told her no I would just like another beer. She asked me if I told my server and I said no and that he was busy. She told me I could not get a beer unless it was through my server. The place had maybe 6 other tables to serve. It was not busy at all. I turned around and headed back to my table and then decided to turn back to the bar and asked her again if I could just get a beer. We had been waiting a while and had no water to wash down our food. She then again told me NO. I was dumbfounded that the bartender could not tell our server that we odered another beer to put on our check or she couldnt add it on our bill herself. When the server came back to the table we just asked for our check and left immediately. We have had poor service at One Shot's before but this takes the cake!! This bar will do much better if they reconsidered the employment of this young gal or teach her the value of providing good service to their customers. I will be finding another place for lunch and beer when in town working on my property. This place sucks now!!

Sam G.

Yelp
Love hanging out here. Consistently good food and cold drinks in a friendly place.
google avatar

Todd L.

Yelp
This is a true dive bar replete with a cocktail option served in a bucket with long straws, all the macro beers, decent pizza and a pretty damn good band. The crowd on a Friday night included people of all walks singing, dancing and having he a great time. OSC is a classic and worth a visit.
google avatar

Rosanne V.

Yelp
We love taking our boat to Harrison especially when we have guests. We usually eat at the restaurant on the lake but it was closed. I had the pizza. : (((( More like Large Cracker with Tomato Sauce. $13 disappointment. Bloody Mary's are good but they were out of beef jerky that makes the drink unique. Fun place to go otherwise. : )))))
google avatar

FoodLover F.

Yelp
Bleh, the pizza is awful. Mostly due to the thick gooey undercooked doughy crust. I scrapped off the topping and tossed the crust. The jalapeño bacon topping was very tasty. The veggie pizza was some cut up tomatoes and mostly black olives. Also had a nice pumpkin ale on drought and she rimmed it with a nutmeg spice blend. One waitress for the whole restaurant. So don't be in a hurry. We spent the day hiking the Pulaski Tunnel Trail in Wallace and then stopping at the Old Mission State Park. We walked the Coeur d'Alene trail looking for moose but only saw one osprey and a few great blue herons. The next morning we drove to Heyburn State Park and hike the Indian Cliffs 3 mile loop trail.

Damon D.

Yelp
very poor service not a very friendly place to eat! not Sure why maybe just a bad day for the hostess but not pleasant at all
google avatar

Carol K.

Yelp
We ate lunch there today. The 4 of us all had the Pulled Pork sandwich. I had my Coleslaw on the side, while others had it on their sandwiches. They were fabulous. We all had onion rings for our side. Those were also great. We ate outside on the deck. Had a great view of Lake Coeur d'Alene. Our waitress, Char, was very attentive. We would go back here again. We've always had good meals when we've been here, whether it's pizza or burgers.
google avatar

Scott B.

Yelp
Not even a good dive far. This was recommended to us so we thought we give it a try. Probably the worst french fries I've ever eaten. The onion rings were not that great either. I ordered a mai tai and it came in a plastic cup. Not very good either although we did have quesadillas and they were OK. The bill for four of us was around $75. We ordered a basket of fries that were bleached thin and no seasoning. Seriously potatoes are so cheap after all this is Idaho right? Change your fries immediately

Brad D.

Yelp
I spent the majority of the summer in N Idaho. We stopped into One Shots many a time and sampled virtually everything on the menu. Never once was there a complaint from anyone. You will like all the food as well as the atmosphere. One Shots is in a very old, I believe Odd Fellows Building. You HAVE to see it. You will be hard pressed to find any patrons not smiling too, but for me, the best part of One Shots is / was the staff; Whitney, Jordan, Char, Adam, Donnie, Heather, Molly, Josie, Doug, Makala and ALL of the others. Tell any of them them I sent you... :-) One Shot Charlies is one of those little jewels you must visit some day. "I'll be back".
google avatar

Andrew L.

Yelp
Best small town bar in the world. Great food, drinks, staff and locals. Live music some nights. Cool swag for sale too. My wife and I love this place.
google avatar

Becc W.

Yelp
Little mid week lunch right before the 4th of July holiday. They are the only restaurant open in town today....weird. Thank goodness they are though. We went basic - salad and pepperoni pizza. Both were delicious! Super fresh salad and we ordered the pizza with extra pepperoni and cheese. Wonderful.

Dustin W.

Yelp
Went there a couple weeks ago for breakfast on a Sunday. I understand they were short staffed but that was no excuse for the wait staff being extremely unorganized. We waited over an hour for our food while we watched tables that came in after us get there's. We ended up leaving before our food came. Our waitress had no clue what was going on or where our food was. Probably won't be going back anytime soon.
google avatar

Matt K.

Yelp
Great energy and fun environment. I knew I was home when I heard 90s music blasting out of the juke box and people yelling random stuff to sound more fun then their peers. I was sold! I'll be back to OSC's for taco night to hear Pour Some Sugar on Me at 125 dB again soon. Yeah, they dabble in the 80s, too.
google avatar

Bob And Renee W.

Yelp
Fun, old kind of historical place. Laid back, small town bar & cafe. Really great chicken salad with no iceberg lettuce, just nice fresh greens with fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, etc. Super friendly, great service!
google avatar

Rob P.

Yelp
Outstanding service and food ! Had the reuben - sauce best I've had. Wife had home made lasagna - excellent ! And great beer and wine. Lake view terrific !

Susan B.

Yelp
Very friendly waitress, great food was very home crafted tasting. We were all hungry and this place hit the spot-- way above regular bar food!!
google avatar

Pru L.

Yelp
My husband, two kids and I were traveling back from WA to our home in MT. We took the long way and did the sights. We wanted to see Harrison and it happened to be the BEST place we had eaten in our 6 day trip. Our food was to die for GOOD! My husband had a Philly, and it was REAL steak. I had a chicken sandwhich that was MELT IN MY MOUTH GOOD! Our kids had grilled cheese and they loved it! Totally worth the extra, out of way to get there! DO IT! GO and you will not be disapointed! GO, YOU MUST EAT HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Caitlin H.

Yelp
This used to be a favorite stop on days out on the lake. Unfortunately, the last few times we have been there the staff has been rude and treated us as if we were an inconvenience. Very disappointing because it is such a nostalgic bar in the lake. Likely we will look elsewhere to stop on our days out on the water.
google avatar

Greg S.

Yelp
The best service. Fun and friendly. Show up for Friday .50¢ taco night or Thursday 3 ball for a blast!
google avatar

Heather G.

Yelp
Ordered a side salad with blue cheese dressing and a medium Hawaiian with jalapeños . Never saw the salad, and pizza came with no jalapeños. We asked her to just bring some jalapeños on the side and we'll add them ourselves. She brought us some and then charged us $1.00 on our bill, even though she forgot AND she never remembered our side salad. Maybe it should be called Cheapskate Charlie's instead?
google avatar

Yelp
Pizza.. Gag me with a spoon. Should be on a show called "Worst Pizza I Ever ate". It's really a ZERO star.

Natalie T.

Yelp
Had an amazing reuben here the other day. My family all loved their dishes as well. Staff was nice and the atmosphere was good. Just a tad slow.
google avatar

Grant B.

Yelp
Stopped here for lunch after a ride on the bike trail. Had the pizza, very good with fresh toppings and a great tasting dough. Staff is very friendly and they love tourists (which we were), service was great as well. Would recommend this as a great lunch stop if you are on the bike trail, or touring around the lake in a car.
google avatar

Alex B.

Yelp
Was told the pizza was great but when we ordered we were told that they were out of the size of pizza we wanted. Never heard that before. The pizzas that arrived were .... Fine, i guess. Otherwise it is a great little dive.
