The Best Hotels in Mauritius

"With its purring supercars sporting Mauritian plates and soigné families in matching Vilebrequin, this storied resort is where the well-heeled still flock 60 years after its opening. Built in 1975 by Sol Kerzner, the 142-suite property on the east coast has morphed from a honeymooners’ paradise to family-friendly (it arguably has the best kids’ club on the island). A refit in 2017 keeps suites up to date with bespoke mid-century furniture and communal spaces based around the architecture of traditional sugar factories to keep things airy and light. Fitness is at the forefront here. There’s suave tennis pro Nicolas, who is available for lessons (book in advance); a slick spa; and a juice bar whipping up acai smoothies. However, the food is more feast than fast. The heaving breakfast spread offers both chia seed banana pudding and mountains of oozing Pont Leveque and gruyere. Restaurant Prime recalls some of the sexiest Manhattan Martini swilling steak joints and the Asian fusion restaurant delivers artful wisps of yellowtail with Jalapeno on custom Bernardin tableware. Families snooze under lapis cabana canopies by day on the main beach; the hidden bay on the other side provides wind-free waters for children and paddle boarders—just don’t go out at the same time as enthusiastic water skiers if you don’t want a humiliating tumble. A deep-tissue massage in its carrara-clad spa afterward fully restores muscles, if not pride." - Jemima Sissons

One&Only Le Saint Géran

"Set the scene: what's the place like? The hotel that spawned not only a global brand but an entire genre. This immaculately maintained, gravity-defying island classic is now more than 40 years old—yet it remains the very model of a smart, slick beach hotel. It's a sunny dazzle of ocean, white sand, whitewashed villas, swaying palms, and thatched beach umbrellas that look, from a certain distance, uncannily like acacia trees or furry drawing-pins. What’s the story here?South African tycoon Sol Kerzner—small of stature but possessed of gargantuan ambition—turned a remote bolthole on an empty peninsula into one of the most beloved of Indian Ocean hotels. From the get-go, the good times rolled, the stardust fell like a meteor shower (everyone from Nelson Mandela to Catherine Deneuve, Charlize Theron, and the Gipsy Kings). Over the years the One&Only brand, no longer owned by Kerzner, grew to become something more than the sum of its parts, yet Le Saint Géran remains essential to its identity. We're intrigued. Tell us about the bedrooms. There was much concern among regulars about the recent renovation. But the sharp intake of breath was followed by a collective sigh of relief when it reopened at the end of 2017, and it was clear everything was quite all right. There are slightly fewer rooms now than there were before (a good thing); much paler and brighter than they used to be (also a good thing), but not in any sense bolder (a good thing, too). How about the food and drink?Another cause for concern during the renovation period was the restyling of the various eating and drinking joints. True, there were various losses (such as the disappearance of Alain Ducasse’s beloved Spoon), but these were offset by various gains: notably the marvelous open-air La Pointe and Spanish-Asian overwater fusion joint Tapasake. Relief! Does anything stand out about the service?Service simply cannot be faulted in terms of friendliness and sweetness, though efficiency is perhaps another matter. But, you know what, you are here on holiday, or meant to be, so relax. If your gin and tonic takes half an hour to reach you at your sun lounger, so be it. Drink in the fresh air and good vibes while you wait. As you enter the lobby, who else is there? An overwhelming majority of guests are repeat guests and would readily identify themselves as members of the Tribe of Le Saint Géran. As the general manager, Charles de Foucault, puts it, "They don’t actually have the name of the hotel tattooed on their arms, but in some cases they’re pretty close to doing so." What’s the neighborhood scene like? When it opened in 1975, it was the only hotel on the island. Today, Mauritius has one of the greatest concentrations of five-stars of any island in the Indian Ocean. Perhaps in the world. And yet Le Saint Géran carries on much as it always has done, and nobody would say that it has been outstripped by the competition. Noted. Anything you’d change? My drinks order. Scratch that gin and tonic. If I’m going to have to wait, I’ll have something pink and frothy with a chunk of pineapple and an umbrella in it. Bottom line: Worth it—and why?A visit to Le Saint Géran is a bit like a visit to the Empire State Building. It's no longer the highest or the fanciest or the glossiest of its kind, but it's still entirely itself and still perfectly capable of taking your breath away." - Steve King

This hotel by the sea exceeded all expectations. The breathtaking views from the room, combined with a stunning beach just steps away, made for an unforgettable stay. The food was absolutely amazing—fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The service was top-notch, with staff always attentive and friendly. The peaceful and relaxing atmosphere made it the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a tranquil seaside retreat!

This is a bonafide five-star hotel and probably one of our best hotels we ever stayed at. We normally aim for O&O, Rosewood and Four Seasons and sometimes Mandarin Oriental and this is a top 5 in the world for us so far. ||The food is world-class and service is impeccable and we actually extended our stay with an additional 5 days and rebooked our flights back to Europe. One in the family haven’t been feeling well for a few days and the entire hotel and staff is helpful to accommodating our needs and “bending” the rules in the right way to ensure as smooth experience as possible despite the situation. We were also fans of the Guerlain Spa that was classy all the way which we visited every day and also took our daughter to a pedi and mani treatment. ||The staff had a high awareness of our dietary expectations and limitations from the day of arrival and through out our stay. The personalised way in which they have approached their work is second to none. I can’t actually think of a more personal approach to our stay. I would like to give a special shout out to Roshan, Basil and Andreas and we also would like to mention the person taking care of our room - a woman’s name that is escaping me the at this very moment.||We highly recommend this to families who wishes a smooth vacation with great food and world-class service. Our view is that the beach rooms are far better than the Lagoon-facing rooms so if you have a chance to go with either, we highly recommend the Beach rooms. We met many families that are returning guests which we probably also will do in the next 2-5 years.

I have been on a lot of places with high standards service, but this was the best. |Even the weather on Mauritius was not great, staff here makes us feel more than great. I would like to highlight Ma’in, as our main host who was with us all the time and made our vacation great. He prepaired nice set up for our anniversary and stayed in touch with us for all our requests. If you want to have best time in some resort and feel what luxury service looks like, come to One and Only le Saint Gerane.

I think this is the worst hotel on the island… unfortunately :) The hotel positions itself as one of the best, but that’s far from the truth! It’s just one big disappointment!||The biggest disappointment – the beach and the ocean!||The ocean is full of seaweed, dirty, and murky—it’s just a nightmare! Traveling thousands of kilometers only to find out you can’t even swim in clean water is incredibly frustrating.||Food – a real health hazard! You can ||The breakfast includes spoiled fruits and vegetables, and products always finish ;) and for a hotel of this level, they serve a buffet breakfast! All the food is stale and dried out! The coffee is terrible. There are only three restaurants on the entire property, and one of them is also a buffet. And, of course, they offer extremely mediocre dinners at €80-100 per dish. It’s not about the money, but about the quality of the food—at least they could have invited chefs from other countries to create delicious and refined dishes. So you need to go outside the hotel “to find the food”)). And on top of that, they close one of the only three restaurants in such a huge hotel—so where are we supposed to go for dinner?||Service – absolutely terrible!||The staff has no training in hospitality at all. Concierge never knows any information that you ask. |We were celebrating our wedding anniversary, and the hotel was aware of it, yet no one even acknowledged it. In hotels of this level, at least, they usually bring champagne as a gesture, but not here 😉. Of course we were not waiting for anything.||Wi-fi … almost no wi fi 🤗||So please, if you don’t want to feel yourself as a full, don’t go here!!! ||And another very important thing—there is absolutely nothing to do outside the hotel. In this part of the island, there are only hotels, and that’s it. If you want to see the real Mauritius or do something interesting, you have to travel at least 2.5 hours. That’s where you’ll find beautiful beaches, life, parks, whales, snorkling… all!

What an incredible hotel!|Everything was amazing!||The service was 100/10. From the moment we arrived we felt so welcomed. Nothing was too much for the staff. I never had to ask for anything twice. It was brought out right away. |Our butlers Hrithik, Ishwar and Thaarish were amazing! We were added to a WhatsApp group upon arrival. No request was too much. We would receive and answer within seconds. |Vicky made sure our family’s need were met. All of the staff took their time to speak to us and made sure we were happy. The service was honestly some of the best we have ever had ||The facilities were spotless. The grounds were well manicured and absolutely stunning. We had an beachfront queen balcony room that was amazing! It was a very clean modern room with lots of extras such as a a beach bag, water bottles, sandals, hats etc included. The room was cleaned so well twice a day. Our kids enjoyed the actives at the kids club such as the pizza cooking class. The spa facitlies stunning and so clean. I had an amazing 90 min massage. The beach was so beautiful and well looked after. Even though the hotel was almost at full capacity there were so many beach and pool chairs available. ||The food was good. However, I would suggest adding more options to the restaurant prime. If you are there for an extended amount of time you will have to eat at all of the restaurants and unfortunately we don’t eat beef. The cocktails were okay nothing really stood out. ||Over all what an incredible stay. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone especially traveling with families! We will definitely be back next year.

Great hotel, super friendly staff, white beaches and the sea! A paradise on earth for the whole family! The room was very spacious, the sports activities provided by the hotel covered all our tastes, with the water-ski and snorkeling being the top ones! Highly recommended!

Very good experience. My hosts were very helpful and kind. Thanks to the IRD, they were amazing, always smiling and happy. My friends came after the cyclone so their stay was very fast but they truly enjoy it. We had good weather and the kindness of the local people was very appreciated.
