"Suck, Peel, Dip, and Eat A trip on Oahu's windward side to the North Shore is not complete without a stop at the yellow Shrimp Shack. Two wonderful women operate this truck and serve up locally sourced fresh shrimp and other delicious food. As a warning, the meals are usually loaded with garlic and spice, but oh so wonderful. Instruction are painted on every yellow table top: "Suck, peel, dip, and EAT." Drinks (and other convenience-store items) are available at Ching's Store next door. The truck is bright yellow and impossible to miss on the North Shore. Be sure to stop in and say hi and indulge in some amazing spicy shrimp!"

"We got off the plane and went straight to one of my favorite places to eat on the island, Ono Steaks and Shrimp Shack. They have an amazing ahi tuna and shrimp plate. I was dreaming of it during pregnancy."

I’ve been coming to this place for the past 4 years, and it makes me genuinely happy to see how much they’ve grown. They’ve never let me down when it comes to flavor, at least not with the dishes I always order! They’re located right next to my favorite beach in Oahu, Waimanalo, and offer incredible Hawaiian and local-style cooking. I highly recommend anything with fish, the portions are filling, the taste is amazing, and it’s always fresh. The Ono with mango sauce, garlic ahi, and coconut shrimp are an absolute must try no doubt about it. The staff is super friendly and the setup has a really cozy, welcoming feel. A true gem on the island!

We were following an audio guided tour when we came across this place. I am so glad we did. The food was scrumptious. Everyone really enjoyed what they got. The staff was friendly and the food came out pretty quickly. I highly suggest you stop by and taste the items on their menu. You will not be disappointed. The garlic fires and fish tacos were my favorite!

Google
This place is PHENOMENAL. Perfect little local hole in the wall. Delicious Kalbi (Korean beef) and shrimp. The rice was perfection. This local hideaway is a real gem. Thank you so much for a great experience!

Google
Hubby and I got the steak and shrimp combo. We got a ton of food for under $40. The shrimp was fresh and the steak was tender and well seasoned. My favorite was the potatoe Mac. I’ve never had had potatoes with Macaroni salad. It added a layer of flavor and texture to the salad that was delish! Stop by, this place is legit.

Google
10/10 recommend! Found this place spontaneously while on a drive and couldn't be happier. Large portions, delicious food (the garlic shrimp is amazing and the coconut shrimp actually tastes like coconut), and friendly staff. Can't wait to come back!

Google
Great place for lunch with great food, large portions, reasonable portions, and courteous service. The garlic shrimp and garlic fries use real minced garlic providing great garlic flavor without being over powering. For garlic lovers like me it is perfect! The sweet and sour sauce has a great spicy bite to it that makes you add it to the everything on the plate to get the flavor to last. There is indoor and outdoor seating of about 6 tables/booths in each area so get there early to beat the crowd. Definitely will go back next time I am at the beach but would make a trip out there just for the food.

Google
Down to earth Hawaiian spot. Nothing fancy but the food is so good. I got their Kalbi and teriyaki. The steak was delicious and not fatty and the chicken was very flavorful. The restaurant sits in the valley with some beautiful outside views. It felt like a perfect Hawaiian spot to me. 10/10 recommend!

Google
This business offers delicious food at competitive prices. My ahi steak took 20-25 minutes to cook which tells me that they are genuinely preparing and cooking the food. They also have sparkling water as an option in their drink dispenser. I recommend this restaurant!

Yelp
Cute little restaurant on an inside road just off the main road in a neighborhood. Staff were so nice to talk to and didn't make a fuss when I messed up my order. We ordered our meals to go and ate in on the beach near by. The steak was well cooked and the shrimp was succulent and fresh. Super yum. We had a side of garlic fries that were crunchy and hot. The Mac And potato was ok. Over all pretty good I would say.
google avatar

Yelp
Garlic shrimp - fine Fish tacos - bad, the tortillas were not good and the fish was tough Coconut shrimp - good Garlic fries - the fries were great, the garlic on top was not good Conveniently located near Waimanolo beach, food came quickly, portions were good, the flavor was not there.
google avatar

Yelp
We got the steak & shrimp and also kalbi & shrimp plates. While the steak was good, the kalbi was amazing! It was so juicy and tender. All of us will get the kalbi next time! The shrimp is also large and crunchy/not over cooked. Price was great too, where can I get a steak/shrimp plate for $12?! It's a simple establishment -- nothing fancy but has great food.

Yelp
Restaurant right next to the beach, happened to bookmark it looking at what was around here. No frills restaurant, came just before closing around 430 and the restaurant got SO BUSY right before closing at 5. I can see why, probably the best garlic shrimp we had and definitely for the price.
google avatar

Salina X.

Yelp
We got coconut shrimp, kalbi plate, garlic shrimp plate, fries with garlic on the side. Everything was so good!! This was the best garlic shrimp I had in Oahu my entire stay. Ono steaks and shrimp shack garlic shrimp over the hyped up giovianni's garlic shrimp all day.
google avatar

Victoria N.

Yelp
No frills, just good food. And probably the cheapest meal you will find in Oahu. Friendly customer service. The place does get hot. I had the coconut shrimp plate and it was delicious. The shrimp were crispy and the batter wasn't overwhelmed with coconut. I guess I'm used to the macaroni salad at various Hawaiian eateries in my state so it was surprisingly nice to see that the salad isn't as creamy. It is a bit salty though. The rice is well-cooked. Reasonably priced for the portion size.

Yelp
So counter person was super friendly. Loved her! The place needs a good cleaning, it's a bit run down and had a not so great smell to it. New paint, new booth fabric, clean air conditioning for smell and it would be so much better. So I ordered the garlic shrimp and steak plate with rice and toss instead of macaroni salad. Food came out in a decent time, plate was a good size. Taste was lacking, steak needs more seasoning even if it's just salt and pepper- a little more please. I could've had my steak a little less cooked. But that is my preference. It didn't taste bad just needed a little zip. So the shrimp is why I came, it was cooked fine- not raw and not over done. It just also needed more flavor, I saw the garlic, I ate the garlic but I think the garlic/butter/oil is thrown on top of the shrimp when someone orders it or something. The shrimp didn't absorb all that garlic butter goodness. It was okay to me. A little bit of a disappointment because I was looking so forward to eating there. It's not a terrible place at all, just not for me.

Yelp
Out of all the places I went to in Oahu, this place by far is the best. Amazing garlic shrimp and Mac salad and the coconut shrimp is to die for! The workers were incredibly friendly and by far my favorite spot. Cannot wait to come back!

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem. We drove the coast and after taking in all that beauty we found this place and decided to stop. Its bright yellow exterior is hard to miss, super cute, and very inviting. Service was excellent and the food recommendations were spot on. Their coconut shrimp is by far my favorite coconut shrimp I've ever had. I'm not sure if it's made in house or what but it sure does taste like it. The coconut flavor really stands out and the coating is thin that you still get a nice piece of shrimp. My husband's garlic shrimp was cooked perfectly as well as his steak. Flavors were just on point. Pricing is excellent too. Some more positives- free parking and PLENTY of parking. There's also a good amount of indoor and outdoor tables though we took our food 10 mins down the road to eat it at the beach. You really can't go wrong eating here and you won't regret it.
google avatar

Robert S.

Yelp
Overall the food here is really good and workers friendly. The only things I wish was different was the fried chicken was boneless, which is ok but not my favorite. At least the menu should say boneless so customers know before ordering. Also, I wanted the garlic shrimp but asked the cashier if the shrimp was deveined and she said no. So, I didn't order it. Then my friend ordered it, and could see, yes, the shrimp are deveined and tasted amazing. Arrgh! People, when you see the shrimp with a cut along the top side of the shrimp and no black thing, it's DEVEINED! Oh well, will have to go back one day but I am on the other side of the island.

Yelp
This place was awesome! We ordered a number 6, and it did not disappoint. I had the garlic shrimp and steak plate with a green salad, while my husband enjoyed the garlic shrimp with teriyaki chicken and mac salad. Both meals were delicious and packed with flavor. The service was friendly and efficient, making our visit even better. The ambiance was generally pleasant, though we chose to eat outside because there was a strong smell of bleach inside, which we appreciated as a sign of cleanliness. Eating outside turned out to be a lovely experience. Overall, we had a great time and would definitely recommend Ono Steaks and Shrimp Shack to anyone looking for tasty food and a good time.

Yelp
I wanted fries so I'm glad the fries were good. It was the best item we tried in our opinion and I would definitely get them again. I think they'd be good both plain and garlic version. Garlic fries - yes, can opt for regular. Good plain or dipped in the sauces we got. Garlic shrimp was good but maybe coconut shrimp would've been a better choice. I liked mine dipped in the sweet and chili sauce. I didn't eat the shells for this type of shrimp. Kalua pork sandwich was fine, first couple bites were juicy but I would skip this next time. Furikake tuna wasn't my vibe. Service was fine. You order at the counter and pick up when your number beeps. You can eat outside or inside which is nice to have choices.

Yelp
Back at this place. Still affordable and delicious. Friendly staff and you'll feel the local vibe. Stop by if you like to try authentic Hawaiian food for an affordable price.

Yelp
UPDAAAAATE. Love this place. Food 10. Service 10. Ambiance 10. That's in my book. This is one of the true steak and shrimp shacks on the island. Was there before covid and is still there after covid. If you reading this this spot is like I said. A MUST TRY. I also had there fish tacos. 10. I must say plain and simple there cook loves what he/she do. Can't wait to come back. HOLA.

Yelp
My friend recommended Ono so we decided to check it out since we were planning to be in the area anyway. So glad we did bc we definitely left satisfied :) Ono is a small order at the counter, grab a table and wait for your food type of restaurant. There's several tables inside and outside as well. Though I recommend staying inside if you want to avoid all the flies all over your food! My friend said the steak was amazing so I knew I wanted to try some. My husband and I both decided on getting #6 - seven garlic shrimp and 8oz steak. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and very garlicky, which I loved! I definitely could've eaten more than seven of them ;) The steak was also cooked well - medium/ medium well and seasoned well too. The shrimp and steak were the perfect combo! I'd definitely get it again. Also the portion was good for $18, it was enough food for my daughter and I to share and finish for lunch! Overall, my family and I enjoyed Ono and I'm glad we checked it out while in Waimanalo! I love small, casual spots and will most likely plan to come back next time I'm in Oahu!

Brooke N.

Yelp
So ono! Unassuming location, personable staff, and amazing food make this a place we will always return to when we visit Oahu.
google avatar

Allister D.

Yelp
This place is worth coming to and hands down, one of the best food places I've been to on the island. I loved the shrimp and steak combo with rice. Everything is juicy, tender, and full of buttery-garlic flavor. I actually think the shrimp here is better than Giovanni's. The shell on the shrimps are actually soft and tender; it removes off the shrimp easily. The steak was cooked just right and still had it's juices. There's not much seating inside here so there's also an outside seating area. The food is cooked fresh as well! I will definitely come back again.

Yelp

Yelp
Found this gem while exploring around Waimānalo Beach. I ordered the beef and garlic shrimp plate and the mango fish taco. I would recommend ordering and bringing your food to the beach to enjoy the food and the beautiful beach. I love Waimanalo Beach for its turquoise water and white sand. (From Ono to waimanalo beach is around 1 mile.)
google avatar

Yelp
In Hawaiian, "ono" means delicious, and they weren't kidding! It was coconut shrimp for my wife and a fried chicken plate for me, 100% local style, absolutely amazing! Nothing fancy, in fact, it's a shack add-on to what looks like an old food truck. No worries--rustic but tidy. Add to that friendly service with a smile which made the whole experience great!
google avatar

Yelp
Ono steak and shrimp has great food Kalbi & garlic shrimp w/ Mac salad Furikaki ahi & garlic shrimp w/ toss salad Side order 7 piece coconut shrimp (deep fried) Large garlic fries
google avatar

RJ M.

Yelp
Service was very good. Garlic shrimp was great. Garlic fries was some of the best I ever had, perfectly crispy. Teriyaki chicken was ok. The Ono and Ahi were both overcooked, hard on outside and dry in the middle with no flavor.

Yelp
This place really hit the spot after our hike at Makapu'u Lighthouse( boyfriend said it was a fake hike but it felt real to me LOL). My boyfriend thought his garlic ahi with coconut shrimp was okay. 3.5/5 The taco tasted fresh and sweet but the flavor combo was weird. 3.7/5 I thought the furikake ahi was a kinda dry and the furikake didn't add any flavor to it but tasted good with the wasabi aoli. The macaroni salad is yummy! 3/5
google avatar

David Y.

Yelp
Swung by the shack after spending some time at waimanalo beach and right before our reservation to hanauma bay. The Thursday kalbi combo with chicken was awesome and gave us enough fuel for the rest of the beach adventures for the day
google avatar

Jeff W.

Yelp
Solid sit down spot, if you're in East Oahu it's a worthy spot. They seem to do shrimp well but have land proteins if you're into that. Had the Ahi steaks and garlic shrimp, 3.5/5 Somewhat air conditioned inside, but you're not gonna be ice cold. Easy parking. Nice staff. Clean inside. Maybe 15-20 min to get food when we were the first to order at lunch. Chill you're in Hawaii!
google avatar

Yelp
So delicious, hits diff after a long day at Waimanolo I loved everything I tried and would come again :)
google avatar

Emily Z.

Yelp
This place was so delicious! I love that the shrimp wasn't too greasy. The steak meat quality was good, and the ahi was delicious as well. There's a lot out back and the beaches nearby are absolutely beautiful. Would definitely come back!
google avatar

Yelp
Very ono! Very reasonable prices and great selections. You can eat it there and walk to Waimanalo Beach or go there after the beach. Super convenient.
google avatar

April O.

Yelp
Ordered fish tacos with fries. The fish tasted fresh and fries were more on the oily side but still great. Servers were nice and welcoming. Good place to grab lunch on the east side.

Andrew L.

Yelp
We needed to eat after driving up the coast a bit and Yelp led us here. Loved it! Family owned, local, food was very good and a great value!! I love it when we find off the beaten path places like this!

Yelp
I had this place bookmarked for awhile and finally got a chance to check them out. They're located in Waimanalo right off of Kalanianaole Hwy and Wailea St., right around the corner from Kalapawai Market & Deli. The outside of their building is painted bright yellow, as well as the inside. You can't miss them! They also have their own dedicated parking lot, which is always a bonus. I was craving shrimp and found their menu online. I decided to call in my order so that it'd be ready when I arrived. When I arrived 15 min later, my meal was ready! I ordered the 1/2 garlic shrimp and 1/2 coconut shrimp plate for $11 plus tax. It came with 4 pieces each, which was a great deal! It also came with tartar sauce & cocktail sauce. Both of the shrimp were fantastic! The garlic shrimp wasn't too garlicky (which I like) and the coconut shrimp was fried to perfection! I selected the potato mac salad and it was delicious! It really was a fantastic plate lunch, and you can't beat the price. Service was very friendly and full of aloha! I'd definitely order food from them again!
google avatar

Yelp
Nice little place with its own parking lot. They have a private lot of outdoor seating as well as AC ran indoor seating. Inside there are 6 booth style seats which would seat about 18 total people (all table seats 4 except one that seats 2 only). Outdoor, there are a total of 6 tables with some with umbrellas. They have restrooms out in the back on a detached building. Just head out through the outdoor seating and you will find it behind the main building. They have sinks to wash your hands outside. They have their full menu without photos but some specials with photos on the counter and on the window at the entrance. You can ask their recommendations and the staff was super friendly in giving her recommendations. We ordered the Hamburger Steak special and the Hamburger steak & roast pork combo (we came on a Saturday so it might or might not be available every day). And the Garlic ahi, furikake ahi and 7pc coconut shrimp. With all the dishes, it comes with plenty of rice and a choice of salad (choose the dressing) or potato mac. The hamburger steak was juicy and the sauce was tasty with a hint of garlic. The ahi was not salty at all and cooked well. The furikake ahi came with a wasabi cream sauce which was amazing with the ahi.
google avatar

Irene P.

Yelp
Food was A++ and the locals know it. Best fresh fish n mango salsa. Service was normal, this is a five joint and not fine dinning. Take away to a beautiful beach or sit at the picnic tables in back or sit inside in the ac.
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
We were driving the coast and decided to stop in and it did not disappoint. My husband and I got the steak and garlic shrimp plate and the kids got the steak plate. We got a side of fries since the kids love fries and they were delicious! Everything we got was good and the kids are super picky. The cashier was friendly and the food was out in less than 10 minutes ! We sat outside and loved seeing the pigeons. We will be coming back for sure..

Yelp
July 2024 Update from our review from May 2023. Ono has done some work to clean up their space. Everything feels more clean and fresh. The garlic fries and Mac salad were quite tasty as was the side salad. This filled us up so we are saving our local favorite fish meats for dinner. The front of store server was cheerful, helpful and efficient. The food was ready fairly quickly. We are staying nearby so I didn't need to check out the bathroom, but overall Ono Steaks has gone back up in our rating. This is especially true for lunch in this price range on Oahu, plenty of tasty food for a small price.
google avatar

Glenn M.

Yelp
A hole in the wall with fantastic food that opens and closes without regard at times to posted hours but that is Hawaiian time so we didn't mind. We ate here 3 times that week and would have more except it wasn't open though it was supposed to be. When back in Hawaii and near here we will definitely eat here again - everyday if we could..
google avatar

Joefer B.

Yelp
Another Spot off the list!!! 2 weeks back we visited this place and it's not a hole in the wall type of stuff but it's was cool to be on the other side of Oahu! My family had the chance to eat at this great place and was it good!! You better believe it! The price is normal for a shrimp and Steak! It's was soooo good! With the macaroni salad! We got the guava and pog drinks. Just so you know it's a small place and can be a long wait depending on the day and time. We went on a Friday morning and it was a line but the line went fast. So just prepare to wait if the line goes out the door and yes the line has been out the door. So if your ever in the part of the islands make your way and visit this amazing food spot and there are plenty of good beaches around so you eat this by the Ocean!
google avatar

Jane K.

Yelp
The food was decent, but not worth driving out of your way to have. We just happened to be down the street so we stopped by for lunch. Even with multiple air conditioners in the small dining area, it was hot so we were in a rush to finish our food and leave. The shrimp was on the oily side and the fish I ordered was bland and tough. I left most of it unfinished.
google avatar

Naomi Z.

Yelp
Some of the best food in Oahu. Worth the drive from Waikiki. We loved the tuna tacos with Mac salad. So good.
google avatar

Nichole A.

Yelp
Back in 2013, I visited Ono Steaks and Shrimp Wagon at a random location on the roadside. I was hooked and it was literally all I could talk about for months on end after our trip - what amazing shrimp tacos I had had. 11 years later, I returned to find that they had an actual building and I could not wait to go back and have those tacos again. So we trekked out to find it and let me tell ya - absolutely NOT disappointed. Still the best shrimp tacos I've had. While it wasn't the same special I had had at the food truck, the coconut shrimp tacos with the mango-papaya salsa were amazing. Would absolutely go back.
google avatar

Pauline T.

Yelp
BEST garlic shrimp on the island!!! I ordered a plate of half coconut shrimp and half garlic shrimp with a side of Mac potato salad. My boyfriend ordered the shrimp tacos that come w this mango salsa and garlic fries with a side order of galbi. Garlic/Coconut shrimp plate: 4.5/5!! Garlic shrimp was BIG and JUICY. It was perfectly cooked and I feel like some places overcook the shrimp so when you eat it, the texture is rubbery but the shrimp here was soso soft. The coconut shrimp is good too but I can definitely taste the coconut seasoning?? so if you're into coconuts, definitely get that but I wasn't expecting it to be so strong. But shrimp was crunchy!! Fish tacos: 3.5/5. I think the salsa was good but the tacos itself didn't stand out to me as much as the shrimp plates. The fries were really good but it's a little disappointing that they used garlic from a jar rather than real garlic. Galbi: 3/5, it taste like the marinated galbi I can get at Costco. Still good but nothing that wowed me. If I were to come back to Oahu, I'll definitely come here again to get the garlic shrimp plate and try their steak!
google avatar

Kimberly P.

Yelp
This place is the best! It's our go-to when we are in the area! They have something for everyone! The Coconut Shrimp were sensational--everyone raves about them, and they're not wrong! The Fish tacos were also amazing--fresh grilled fish with mango--a beautiful combination. We had come back and had the tacos and shrimp again. It was really good. And it's good value, too. Everything we ordered was amazing. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
If you're in the southern part of Oahu, make sure you stop here. Shrimp is absolutely fantastic. It seems to be fairly popular, and there is limited seating inside but much more outside.
google avatar

Mayu T.

Yelp
The shrimp is so fresh and plump! Ask for the garlic shrimp with the coconut shrimp so you can get the best of both worlds: crispy and flavorful delight. You could tell the fresh ahi in the tacos was also a high-quality ingredient, but I don't think the tacos are the best way to enjoy it because it loses out to the creamy, fruity pairing of the sauce and salsa and the bland thickness of the tortillas, which were doubled up but still a soppy, gummy mess. I would have enjoyed it more if the ahi was flavored to balance the salsa and the tortillas were grilled.
google avatar

Angel P.

Yelp
A favorite for us to visit when we go to Oahu. Yummy reasonably priced food. Service was nice and efficient.
google avatar

Michael K.

Yelp
This is a great stop after hiking or staying at the beach on the east side of the island! We got half garlic and half coconut shrimp and they were both delicious! Portions are big and I really loved the crispiness of the coconut shrimp! I could eat 20 of those! The garlic shrimp was a nice contrast to the coconut shrimp so going back and forth between those and the mac salad made for a fun, tasty meal!
google avatar

Jonathan J.

Yelp
Stopped here for lunch on vacation. The whole family loved everything! Highly recommend the teriyaki chicken. Also enjoyed the steak, coconut shrimp and garlic shrimp. Can't go wrong here!
google avatar

Sammy W.

Yelp
From the looks of it, you may not think it would be that great, but we really enjoyed our food here! The coconut shrimp is DELICIOUS! I also really liked the potato macaroni salad. The steak and garlic shrimp were okay; my aunt and my mom liked it more than I did. The garlic shrimp was a bit too garlic-y for me but it was still good. The staff was very nice and helpful. It did feel slightly dingy/dirty but the food was worth it.
google avatar

Dominic K.

Yelp
Amazing spot way off the beaten path! It's a tiny shack with peeling paint and old furniture. But that's where the criticism stops. The food is amazing! I had the coconut shrimp and the teriyaki chicken. The coconut shrimp is the winner. The staff were incredibly friendly. Don't miss this on the way to the beaches
