How sleepy Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture became a hub for design and innovation - SilverKris

"A former quayside warehouse transformed in 2014 into a lively creative lifestyle complex that houses a café, bar, restaurant, bakery, shops and the cycling-focused Hotel Cycle. The adaptive-reuse project preserves the 70-year-old industrial shell—exposed timber beams, ducts and pipes—while inserting a contemporary minimalist interior, a design approach that has earned architectural acclaim. The 28-room accommodation is purpose-built for cyclists with wall mounts, maintenance areas and a bike shop, allowing guests to roll in from the boardwalk and check in without leaving their saddles. Located a short walk from JR Onomichi Station, the development attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually and deliberately cultivates cycling culture tied to the nearby Shimanami Kaido route." - Tom Miyagawa Coulton

Beautiful hotel set in a renovated warehouse right by the water — a perfect and convenient location if you’re planning to cycle the Shimanami Kaido. One of the hotel’s highlights is that you can park your bike right in front of your room, which makes getting back on the road the next morning incredibly easy. The rooms are spacious and modern, though a bit dark and with limited storage for clothes. Bike rental is available through the hotel — we opted for the racing bikes with Shimano 105 groupset. They’re a bit dated but still in good working condition. That said, the rim brakes didn’t offer the same confidence as modern disc brakes. Service was friendly, but struggled to help us find a practical way to return from Imabari with our bikes. Most options were either quite expensive or logistically complex, so we ended up turning back before reaching Imabari and caught the ferry from Setoda instead. Breakfast was nicely presented but fairly basic — not ideal for a full day of cycling. Limited fruit (just a few orange slices), and only Western-style options, with no rice or Asian dishes. On the plus side, they did provide gluten-free bread on request. Overall, a stylish and unique place to stay that’s ideal for cyclists, but with some room for improvement in service and breakfast variety.

A nice compound with multiple tenants including a place to stay. Visited there during sunset, nice sea side docks to stroll around and have coffee and snacks. There are also shops inside the compound selling multiple local goods. There’s a 2 story parking building nearby too so it’s easy to access for those coming by car.

Best avoided. - no windows in the bedroom. - room smells strongly of mold. - bathroom poorly ventilated. Using it covers the room in high humidity. - toilet has no privacy. Unless you use curtain to block the room and light source. + location is great. + can store your bike in the room. The room looks cool on Instagram photos. Many of the room elements are high quality. But the lack of any window in the room plus the bad ventilation causes the room to smell awful. We left early because we were coughing due to the mold smell.

This is a cool building to hang out in. Also a good place to stay, but maybe a little pricey. The room was nice but not spacious. The breakfast was good, but didn’t include a range of coffees. The service was okay. Either needs to drop prices a little or sharpen up.

If your into road cycling, this is one of the best hotels you will stayed at. The staff are very friendly and helpful. They can speak basic English if you need it. The hotel is chic with great appointments the cafe, bakery shop and restaurant are all brilliant. The coffee is great and all is reasonably priced. I have been twice now and would not hesitate to go again.

Stayed here in December 2019. Comfortable, clean rooms with racks for bike storage. Hotel staff were kind enough to store my bags for one night after I checked out while I did the Shimanami Kaido. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Writing this review for the hotel and bike shop only, as we didn't try the bakery, restaurant, or bar! We splurged in U2 for our Shiminami Kaido housing (splurge relative to Japan travel, this is still so much cheaper than what you'd pay in the US for this quality) and we had 0 regrets. We had to change our bike plans out of weather concerns, and ended up arriving at Onomichi from Tokyo around 11am with the intent of doing an out-and-back ride. I did have to email the hotel to reserve the bikes directly from the Giant store inside, but it was very easy and they took care of the booking after I let them know the dates and our heights. Service was so friendly (as it seems to be across Japan). We could drop off our bags early before check-in; they took them to our room; and during actual check-in they explained everything in the room. The bike rentals also went smoothly; very attentive to the height of our bike seats and that we understood how the lock worked. Coming back to U2 after a grueling ride was amazing - shower water pressure was killer, room was very comfortable and not too small for us, and the pajama set and slippers were the perfect way to cap off some self care. I would definitely recommend U2!

Yelp
Western options like pasta set plates. The highlight is the bakery with a huge assortment of fresh breads.
