Like the quaint Japanese inns found deep in the countryside, Yuen Bettei Daita leans hard into traditional wellness, and has become a favorite among international visitors and staycationing Tokyoites alike. The multi-course menus in the restaurant, Tsukikage, pay tribute to a panoply of seasonal ingredients. Yuen Bettei Deita

"Why book? A ryokan-style hotel, complete with mineral-rich onsen water, set in the heart of Tokyo’s coolest neighborhood—need we say more? Set the scene Like the quaint Japanese inns found deep in the countryside, Yuen Bettei Daita leans hard into traditional wellness, proving to be a favorite among international visitors and staycationing Tokyoites alike. There’s a major Catch-22 to staying here—the rooms and baths are so inviting that you’ll never want to leave, and yet you’re smack dab in the middle of Shimokitazawa, largely considered to be Tokyo’s funnest cluster of city blocks and a global hub of streetwear fashion. The backstory When officials buried the tracks of the Odakyu suburban metro line underground, a new opportunity presented itself to urban planners: create ample swaths of green space overtop; a novelty in cramped Tokyo. In came a long path from Higashi Kitazawa station all the way down to Setagaya Daita with shops, restaurants, and this compelling new hotel; the emerald in this newly developed greenway. Rooms From soothing soaking tubs, to shoji sliding walls with paper screens, the rooms boast every tenet of the traditional ryokan, but fair warning: the entry-level rooms are small (200sq ft). Food & drink Like the traditional countryside inns, the multi-course menus in the restaurant, Tsukikage, pay tribute to a panoply of seasonal ingredients. Spa The Sojyu Spa—a distinctly Japanese wellness brand—operates separately within the confines of the hotel, both as a retreat for guests, and as a day spa welcoming weary Tokyoites. The one-hour massage is a shockingly good deal at only 8,000 yen per session. Not to be missed is the onsite onsen, an alkaline bath which draws its waters from a source deep within Hakone, a famous hot springs region at the base of Mount Fuji about 90 minutes outside of the city. Neighborhood Over the last decade, the gravity of Tokyo’s coolest neighborhoods has continued shifting southwestward, beyond the circle of the Yamanote train line and out into the boroughs of Setagaya and Meguro. Shimokitazawa reigns supreme as the coolest district in all of Tokyo; a scatter of traditional and modern construction replete with chic espresso shops, vintage clothing stores, and plenty of curry parlors and ramen joints." - Brandon Presser

Unfortunately, we were only able to book a day pass to experience the tea room and the onsen. The food and tea are amazing. The space is so calm and beautiful. Lots of thoughtful touches throughout. If rooms are unavailable, I highly recommend the day pass as an alternative. The neighborhood is beautiful and calm. A wonderful retreat from the bustle of Tokyo. Next time we are back in Tokyo we will certainly stay here and book a room in advance.

An amazing experience. We will be back and will probably spend our whole trip here. The onsen was so relaxing and was very clean in comparison to what I have experienced in one of the nicer hotels in Tokyo. Breakfast is amazing and service is very nice. The rooms are simple and quaint. They are smaller so keep that in mind

My husband and I each had an amazing massage at the spa. The ladies were so friendly & welcoming. We filled out our forms and chose our scent for the treatment. I have back and shoulders issues and so my massage was tailored for that area and it was invigorating, relaxing and I felt like could walk on clouds after. We then went to the onsen and it was truly wonderful. A beautiful space that includes a sauna and an onsen for the ladies and in the men’s area there was also an ice bath. The facilities to dry off and get yourself ready were beautifully designed and they have thought of everything. We had such a wonderful experience with the massage and the onsen that we visited again on our last day of our holidays. A hidden sanctuary in Shimokitazawa. This is a must for anyone visiting Tokyo. Thank you to all the staff involved with our incredible experience, we will be back!

We had an amazing stay here. If you’re looking for somewhere that provides easy access to the main sites of the city but also gives you somewhere calm to escape the madness, this is it. The location is absolutely perfect, along a beautiful walking route that has lots of cool cafe’s restaurants and bars. The staff are super friendly and were exceptional when our baby girl got sick. And the onsen is also incredible, a perfect antidote to jet lag. As a bonus, the prices are extremely reasonable. We will definitely be staying here next time. A small note: the rooms are definitely on the smaller side. We pack light and are pretty organised/tidy so it wasn’t an issue for us. But if you need more space upgrade your room.

Lovely way to land off a 12 hour flight, hour train and two metro lines. The subway stop emerges onto a quiet greenway and when entering the ryokan the air shifts to smell of relaxation zen and spa. We were easily checked in between our two rooms, five adults, and we grabbed handmade cocktails in the cozy bar. The room amenities were lovely with slightly cramped quarters which was fine but we wish there had been more common space available. The cocktail lounge was open but reserved and full occasionally and the sizable breakfast area not available in the evening. Best breakfast we have had on our trip and absolutely brilliant!!

Rooms were lovely. Beautifully designed and functional. (They were small, so we packed our clothes for 1 night in a small suitcase and left the other luggage in the shoe area.) the service was wonderful and the location is right along a lovely walking path that goes to lots of restaurants and vintage shops. The onsen, of course, was so relaxing and the locker room had great amenities. There are beautiful gardens visible within the hotel.

I was surprised to slide in from the metro in a such a hidden gem. It's a very well designed experience. The room: very nice atmosphere with tatami and hand carved wooden floor, generous space. The spring mattress are of good quality and work good for the back, no kitschy soft mats. The shower cabin is covered in metal and the pressure is unmatched. The studio has a nice sitting place with a view to the street feels very intimate, no sound gets through. A plus in the fact that you can still open the windows for fresh air, besides leaning on the ventilation. The bath robes are of good Japanese quality, the kaki outer jacket felt good. Also the slippers were good, it felt cosy to dress before going to onsen. While not a big fan of wearing costumes, I didn't mind going to the onsen in that suit. The onsen is great, the lockers nicely done, good surface on the floor keeping humidity out, good hair driers, fresh available towels. Inside the cleaning cabins are nice, good shower heads. The dry sauna is good, high temperature, as it should be. The quality of the sitting towels is ok. Outside it's a little garden. You can watch it, hear the sound of the street while cooling off after the sauna or bath. Also a great hot water basin. We had breakfast with our booking. First day it was amazing, so much food for that moment of the day 7:30 was our option. Grilled fish, a miso bowl, rice, pickles, tofu, some fruit, drinks. Taste was good and it felt great to start the day with such a rich offering. The second day it felt too much to eat the same again. The variation was insignifiant, only 1-2 products differed. With the reception desk the experience was inconsistent. We also had English speaking customer service that welcomed us and guided us. We had some problems at one point with a delivered package that was not announced in spite of multiple questions. They handled the situation professionally without any resistance. Generally the stuff felt welcoming and respectful to the place and visitors. They had nice suits too, I appreciate the fabrics ha.

Service: Contrary to some of the low ratings on here, our service was exceptional. Staff were friendly and inviting to my wife and I. One night they happily gave me information about the yakitori restaurant across the street. The next day, we wanted to book tickets to the Enoura Observatory in Hakone which required a phone call for day-of reservations. We weren’t able to call because our phones wouldn’t connect. I asked if they could help and they made the call and reservation for us. Regarding meals, we booked breakfast only for each day. The food was 10/10, and the staff waiting on us were again exceptionally friendly. They were also able to accommodate my wife’s gluten AND dairy allergies, something that very few places in Tokyo have been able to do. The reviews saying they were surprised when they weren’t allowed to have dinner/breakfast did not read the website that clearly states you need to book your meals when you book your room. Location: The Setagaya-Daita Odakyu station is next door, making it very easy to get into the main parts of the city. Setagaya itself is a little off the beaten path of Tokyo, making it quieter, calmer, and more relaxing. It’s a ten minute walk (or one stop on the train) to the more populous section of the neighborhood around Shimo Kitazawa station, with more restaurants and bars and shopping. This is also the area that has many of Tokyos vintage clothing stores. Because it is not one of the main strips of the city, there are fewer tourists and less people in general. Rooms: Clean, quiet, charming traditional Japanese style rooms. We stayed in a deluxe double and were quite pleased with it. I’m not sure why some reviews complain about the size of the rooms. This is Tokyo so space is at a premium, but my wife and I did not feel cramped at all. One reviewer said the door hit his shoes when he opened it. Maybe he should have moved them out of the way. We did not use the bath so cannot comment. 10/10 we will absolutely stay here again next time we visit.
