15 Best U.S. Airports for Finding Cheap Flights

"Don't confuse this airport with Ontario, Canada. Ontario International Airport in California is a secondary airport in the Los Angeles area, offering a less-crowded experience to LAX. And it has cheaper flights, too, thanks to main airlines Frontier and Southwest." - Stefanie Waldek Stefanie Waldek Stefanie Waldek is a freelance space, travel, and design journalist with expertise in aviation, meteorology, and polar regions. Google
Ontario has its own international airport, which is totally amazing 😍 for people stay in the east side of the LA metropolitan area. Though it's small, but in the end it serves its purpose of transporting visitors in and out of Southern California☀️, less traffic less passengers, and less chaos. Definitely will start traveling through it from now on.

Google
Ontario International Airport is truly a hidden gem. For a long time, we used to travel through San Diego and cross into Tijuana using the CBX bridge. At first, it seemed convenient, but in reality, it’s not really worth it. Parking there is expensive, prices can go up to around $35 per day depending on the month, and you have to walk quite a bit since there’s no shuttle service and the area isn’t very comfortable to move around, often with dirt paths. On top of that, you have to pay to use the bridge, and once you cross, there’s still a long walk to get to the Tijuana airport. It’s far from the Inland Empire, and when you add the cost of gas, time, parking, and the bridge fee, it really doesn’t make sense anymore. That’s why Ontario International Airport has become a real game changer for us. It’s close, convenient, and easy. Parking is just steps away or you can take the quick shuttle. When you land, you’re practically home already. When you compare everything, the time, effort, gas, bridge fee, and parking, the “savings” you think you’re getting with Tijuana flights really disappear. Most flights from Tijuana also leave very early in the morning, which makes it even more inconvenient. So for us, using Ontario International Airport just makes more sense. It’s faster, simpler, and far more comfortable when traveling to Mexico or anywhere else.

Google
Ontario International Airport has been steadily growing and improving for years. My family and I have used this airport for over 40 years. We appreciate the freeway access, the parking, the security, the airlines and the cleanliness. It is a friendly part of Southern California!

Google
ONT really surprised me in the best way possible. It’s one of the most efficient and relaxed airports I’ve ever flown from in Southern California. The layout is simple and intuitive, and security was fast with barely any wait. Everything felt calm and clean — such a contrast to the chaos of larger airports like LAX. I was flying business class, and the overall process from check-in to boarding was smooth and comfortable. ONT has earned a spot on my list for future travel in and out of LA especially when I want a quick and stress-free airport experience.

Google
Excellent airport. Staff is really good for shuttle drivers, Rental car agencies, TSA, Clear, and the others working the airport and cleaning staff are professional.

Ankur R.

Google
Ontario International Airport is a pretty well-managed small airport. I’ve never been through security this fast—less than 5 minutes, which is the quickest in my entire travel experience. The airport has limited gates but everything is organized and well managed, making it an easy and stress-free option compared to larger airports.

Rogelio M.

Google
5 star airport experience. Special thanks to the shuttle driver. I had a fantastic experience at the airport. Everything was fast, convenient, and the entire place was impressively well maintained. But what really stood out was the exceptional service from the lady driving the shuttle bus. She went above and beyond for every single passenger. Not only was she helping people with their luggage and making sure everything was stored properly, but she also greeted everyone with a warm, welcoming attitude. She made it a point to look around and ensure no one got left behind, showing genuine care for each person boarding. Her attentiveness, professionalism, and kindness made what is usually a routine part of travel feel incredibly pleasant. People like her make a real difference. She deserves recognition for the pride she takes in her job and the way she treats travelers. Thank you for making the experience so smooth and memorable!

Google
I've flown in and out of this airport a few times. It's a "good size" airport. It's big enough plenty of flights come in and out. But small enough to not have to walk for an hour to get to your gate. Busy but never feels super crowded. Clean facility, and friendly staff. Not to mention you're always close by something to eat, or a 5 minute walk from a shop of some sort. Or creative vending machines.

Yelp
I like this airport because it's fast paced and you can avoid craziness of LAX. It's clean but bathrooms could be cleaner especially when the airport is busy. I liked they had multiple hand sanitizers around but some were broken! Love the skittles machine but yeah I wouldnt pay 8$ again for that little. They have a cool educational place by the subway that you can chill and relax.

Yelp
This airport is underrated. My cousin who frequently flies from Denver, Colorado to California always arrives here and it's great. Only a 15 min drive from my aunts house, always super empty, no traffic - just go in and out. The only bad experience I've encountered is when it's a holiday. Seems like no one works there on the holidays. The baggage claim on December 29 took about 45 mins to come out. That was ridiculous. Tickets are pricier compared to LAX for international flights but it should be comparable for domestic flights.. if not just a tad bit more. There's barely any regulation when you are waiting to pick someone up so sometimes there may be a traffic jam. But based on the last few times I went to ONT, it was not bad at all. Late nights, early mornings - that's when I am picking up/dropping off my cousin so I can't really speak for any other times of the day. Overall, this airport ain't too shabby.

Yelp
Super easy to get in and out of the airport. No giant terminal traffic line like lax, you can uber/lyft/ride share directly curbside without having to go to a separate lot. Security has always been fast, in both the regular and priority pass line. Have flown in terminal 1 and 4, both domestic and international, and had always been a breeze. There is tsa pre-check, clear. There is a priority pass lounge in each terminal but note they will shut down to be exclusive to certain airlines depending on flight pattern.

Yelp
Here to pick up my daughters from the east coast for two weeks of holiday fun! Grateful their flights weren't overly delayed or cancelled. Can't wait! This airport is just the best!

Yelp
Recently visited some friends and Ontario Airport was very convenient. It was easy to navigate, clean, and far less crowded than LAX. Terminal 4 offered a solid variety of food and drink options and a nice new look. The rental car shuttle was fast and easy to access.

Yelp
Ontario Airport as a local is a breeze...its location is of course way more convenient than making a long and time consuming drive to LAX. There's an ever-expanding list of airlines that service the airport going to an ever-expanding list of destinations. Starlux and China Airlines do offer Taiwan service as well. Now that I live out-of-state, arriving at Ontario is certainly a different experience. The TSA is slightly slow and less efficient than a larger airport. It's also way more cramped. Bathroom facilities are ok. Airport Signage is good, they've recently upgraded all signs. There's plenty of shops and eateries at the terminal to spend money at. It should also be noted that ONT uses a two story model like other smaller airports with baggage claim and ticketing all on the ground floor and post-security on the second floor. Rental car area is off the terminal and is accessible via a Shuttle Bus. All rental agencies are accessible via the same shuttle, which is also the shuttle that goes to the various parking lots at the airport. To access the shuttle, one must cross a few lanes of traffic to get to the other median where the shuttle comes. Sometimes the shuttle drivers are very friendly and helpful, other times they are less helpful. Overall, it's a great airport to fly in and out from and they have made a lot of improvements over the years to expand services. PS: Also, this is the airport in The Office where Pam and Michael hug and have their send-off.

Yelp
I was here on Saturday, 08/30/25 with my mom. We flew Southwest to San Jose, CA (SJC Airport) and stayed in North Cal for 4 days, 3 nights. We then arrived here on Tuesday, 09/02/25. This is a local airport near where we live (15 minutes away). Typically tickets here are way pricier than LAX however we got a pretty good deal as we booked 3+ months in advance. Very clean, modern-looking, and convenient!!!

Yelp
I just had a world-renowned experience on Delta, thanks to Isaiah the Great! Landed at Ontario airport and picked up a taco. Yes, I am grateful After a long and productive trip, on flight dl1614, I was blessed to land in the hands of Delta Airlines, where Isaiah truly stood out. His attentiveness was on another level, something I haven't seen in a very long time. He is not only dedicated but also a natural leader who goes the extra mile to ensure his team and passengers feel valued. Delta, thank you for having such gems like Isaiah on board. Excellence in service makes all the difference! Team Smiley

Yelp
It's nice and the signage is large. Parking can be far if you park in the lots. They have chick fil a! TSA is very busy and in a hurry lol. Restrooms are clean and they have a refillable water station.

Yelp
Its an easy airport that's one big circle. Its not stressful here and sometimes its cheaper to fly here that san diego. Its not hectic or busy here which is relieving to your mind. When its easy to navigate that also helps and eases your mind.

Yelp
Make sure you enter at East Airport Drive, because if you just click on the map directions in Yelp, it may take you to the abandoned side of the airport. It was my first time here, and I simply came for my Global Entry interview, which you need to make an appointment for. This is for those who want a much quicker process through security airports. It also gives you TSA Precheck on domestic flights. After applying online, you'll get emailed to set up the interview. Ontario Airport opened the Global Entry office in 2023. It's located in the small International Arrivals building. You'll see the sign to turn right through a slightly curved narrow street with lots of cones and construction equipment around. There is a small free parking lot right in front of the building that's also conned with one entrance that's not too clear, but you'll see it. Just go super slow. On a Saturday afternoon the building was empty except for the one door agent who is behind the glass and will first check your passport and verify your appointment before unlocking the door. The interview is super short. Might have only taken 10 minutes, and there was no wait to be seen either. You'll be asked a few questions and your photo and finger prints will be taken. And it's as easy as that! The next closest airport where they offer the interview appointments is LAX, but it's a hassle just to try to park somewhere, with no free options. Anyway, you will then get your card in the mail within 2 weeks, and it lasts 5 years before needing to renew. If anyone was considering applying, I would highly recommend!

Yelp
Ontario International Airport is kind of a well-known airport in the city of Ontario. For that reason, it is why we love flying in and out of it. I have been here so many times to go to Las Vegas and even to Asia! It can go almost anywhere you just have to check for flights flying in and out of here. There is a variety of different airlines such as Frontier, United, Jet Blue, South West, and China Airlines.

Yelp
ONT has been my home airport for 8 years. While still light years better than going all the way to LAX, ONT leaves much to be desired. I usually fly AA or SWA so my experience is almost entirely based on Terminal 4. First, dining options are extremely limited so it was an odd decision when they replaced the Carl's Jr with a Chik fil A. Now, don't get me wrong, I like CFA as much as the next guy, but it's closed 14% of the week (Sundays). That's fine out in the world where you have options but not in the airport where there are few other options. My BIGGEST complaint is the outrageous price for onsite parking. It used to be ok pre-COVID, but now it's insane. I try to take Uber whenever I can because of this. The security line is also poor. Because of the original design of the airport, I don't know if there's a way to make it bigger, but as it is, the area is so narrow that it creates a huge bottleneck. I'm usually ok with Precheck (except they rarely have a dedicated precheck screening lane open), but the regular line often stretches back to baggage claim. They also have the most overly-sensitive metal detectors in the world. Lastly, the seating. It's got to be 30 or 40 years old. There are NO charging ports and no tables or cup holders to put down your coffee/drink.

Yelp
Ontario International airport is located in Ontario California. It's a smaller airport but very convenient. The entrance , where you drop off n check in your luggage is nearby therefore super convenient. I love that you can fly out of Ontario and end up so far away and then come right back to this convenient airport . If you are in the IE or in SoCal give this airport a try .
google avatar

Jan K.

Yelp
Ontario is one of my favorite airports.... It's still small enough to get in and out without a lot of fuss.....it's so much better than LA... my kids dropped me off... so that's a plus... parking is a not fun.... traffic getting here was a mess....
google avatar

Audrey B.

Yelp
I wish they had more options for international flights because I would fly from here all the time! It beats the craziness over LAX or SD area. I recently flew to Bangkok and luggage check in and security clearance was a breeze! I was in at my gate in less then 30 minutes! Although there aren't many fancy shops or restaurants at this airport, I'll take it over waiting in long lines and driving in traffic.
google avatar

Christina T.

Yelp
Took a red eye from this airport, and I like how small and easy to navigate this airport is. While there weren't too many people when I arrived, the TSA line took SO long to get through. Once we out our items to be scanned, it took about 15 minutes to scan the 8 people in front of me. The TSA staff kept getting distracted and talking to each other, or waiving airport staff through before us, adding to the delay. Once I got through, the gates were clean and comfortable to sit at. They have a couple of vending machines to get coffee and a snacks at, and there was at least one bar/restaurant open at around 9PM when we were there.
google avatar

Andrew W.

Yelp
It's a nice and small airport that you can access easily but it's not reliable cuz our flight got delayed by 2 hrs and later I got additional 15 mins delayed... seems like delaying happening quite often for whatever reasons. But I like the small and coziness, wishing they'll be more reliable. Work it out! Cheers
google avatar

Melissa B.

Yelp
Ontario Airport is genuinely my favorite because it's too convenient close to home, never chaotic, and TSA is basically a walk-through... like there's never a line. And getting an Uber here is SO easy you're not doing the whole LAX-style "take a shuttle to another galaxy to find your ride" nonsense. Plus there's a brewery inside?? Kinda iconic. Travel days feel way less stressful here.
google avatar

Latrese P.

Yelp
I spent a day in So. Cal and was suggested to fly into ONT. It's a relatively smaller airport, but close to where I was going. Easy to exit. Upon return to go home, check-in was fast. I was greeted with enthusiasm by the Clear Agent and getting through TSA was a breeze. For PreCheck, you're given a little laminated card and go through a separate line. Gate signs were clear and easy to read. For this to be a smaller airport, there were plenty of seats at the gate. I'd definitely flight into ONT again.
google avatar

Angela N.

Yelp
I would choose ONT over LAX any day. I've been flying out of this airport for years and have never had an issue. Since it's much smaller, checking in and getting through security is usually fairly quick. There is less traffic for the most part unless you are traveling during a major holiday of course. Although flights can be a little more expensive, I don't mind since the environment is a lot less stressful than other airports.
google avatar

Michele L.

Yelp
We flew out of and flew back into the Ontario Airport. The airport seems well organized and the staff were nice. Lots of food places to grab a bite or drink. We checked in our bags with no issues. Air conditioner was running and the bathrooms were clean.
google avatar

Shani S.

Yelp
Always will fly out of here and not LAX. Has a great lounge if you have Amex or Priority Pass. Has Clear so super easy through TSA!
google avatar

Jenn R.

Yelp
Way less busier than LAX, Ontario airport is a great alternative to travel out from. Adequate parking and there are free shuttles to drop you off to your airline terminal. Surrounding area is easier to navigate through as well since the airport is located in a suburb. If you can get a flight through here, book it. Your sanity will thank you for it.
google avatar

Angel W.

Yelp
Fast becoming one of my favorite airports! It's small with 2 terminals and you can get from curb to gate in 15 minutes with TSA PreCheck! My most recent flights were to and from Seattle out of Ontario Airport. I got smart this time and scheduled my flights so there wasn't traffic and it worked perfectly for my trip! This is so much better than LAX and SEA. The only bad thing is the limited food options, but make sure to bring snacks and be prepared. I love the baggage claim carousel! The edges are flush so it's easy to pick up large bags. However, I'm thinking the down side would be some bags may fall down near the corners. Uber is convenient to for pick up and drop off at the curb. You don't have to walk to another terminal or take a train to the Rideshare area. Definitely recommended!
google avatar

Marshay D.

Yelp
My first time at Ontario airport and I'm very satisfied. It was so easy to check in and if I get TSA pre-check it's even easier it was so fast. Is very small they have very good food options to choose from and everything works fast smooth operation. I got Dunkin' Donuts, but they did have other eateries and they did have Chick-fil-A . Was early in the morning flight and I highly recommend if you want less hassle . I would come back here for sure! -Marshay D.
google avatar

Brian V.

Yelp
4++ i'm not sure if I was lucky or I came on the right night, but this is one of the easiest airports to use logistics wise. I pre-bought my parking and walked over which wasn't too far. I got through security really quickly (helps I have TSA pre-check) Overall, just one of the least painful experiences I've had at any airport ever. As long as the prices are reasonable for the flights, has the route I'm looking for, and if I can get out here, this is probably my preferable location to fly out of in Southern California.
google avatar

Patricia D.

Yelp
my favorite local airport. it's always such a breeze to fly in/out of here. it's small enough to walk in through the doors and be at tsa already but big enough for them to have several destinations.
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
Kalo is the most amazing agent! Sweet, patient, understanding and SO ACCOMMODATING. Frontier really did their big one with hiring her :)

Yelp
Say it isn't so!! I could swear I wrote a review for this airport already, but apparently not! **GASP** Ontario International Airport (ONT) is one of my top 3 airports! It is a quick in and out kinda airport, and I love how fast I can check in, board and be in the air and on my way. They have some good dining options, and on my last flight out of here, I found the Farmers Fridge vending machine which I saw on IG! It was past my gate, but I had ample time, and came early specifically to try this, lol. Was it worth it? YES! Healthy and reasonably priced at an airport?! Sign me up!! Chick-fil-A is just down at the other end, and I married the 2 for a healthy grilled cobb salad. They also have a Dunkin Donuts at the top of the TSA check point, before you start your walk to the 400 gates. I don't think I've ever seen it open, or maybe I just come at odd times. The restrooms here are pretty clean, too. TSA is usually quick and they don't normally have horrendous lines like the bigger major airports. I am a huge fan of ONT, and will continue to fly in and out of here on the regular! Avoid the hassle of LAX if you can, and fly ONT instead! ;)
google avatar

CG N.

Yelp
Everything went by soooooo smooth I was in and out of TSA within 10 min . That's a record!!!

Yelp
#15 for 2024 Out of the LA area this is my preferred airport to fly into. Easy in, Easy out. Depending how long I will be away will determine if I drive in or take a LYFT. If you decide to leave your car there you will need to book your spot online. Go to https://www.flyontario.com/parking/lots to take care of that. There are 6 lots. Hourly and daily rates are available. Look at the map to decide which parking lots are close to your terminal. if you do park far there is a bus that goes around in a loop that can pick you up and take you where you need to go in the airport area. There is no fee to ride. They will also lower the bus to make it easier for you to bring your big, heavy bulky luggage. If you rent a car the bus can take you there too. There are gas stations close by you can refill before you return. They don't have the best price but they do tend to be cheaper than in the LA city itself. Thankful for that. If you do take LYFT it is best to schedule a pick up on your return to avoid waiting hours in the later evening when there are not many drivers available or none that want to travel far. Best to schedule that 24hrs in advance. From check in to TSA it's a short walk. After that walking to the gates will vary depending on your designated gate. Not all the time, fares from here do tend to be cheaper than most other airports in the area especially LAX. When it is cheaper to use LAX I find the difference in fare is not enough to go to LAX. That includes flying international as well. There's no traffic getting in and no traffic getting out. So why wouldn't you come to the Ontario International Airport?
google avatar

Sherie K.

Yelp
The Ontario airport was a nice little airport. I'd actually never flown out of it before and was pleasantly surprised to see that the day before they had one of the greatest track and field runners, Jackie Joyner-Kersee there to sign books and autographs-- wish ai was there for that! But overall the airport was pretty straightforward, it's not a long walk at all from the front to security and TSA had no one waiting so Precheck was a breeze. We flew out of Southwest and our gate had a Chick-fila that wasn't terribly busy, but had a steady stream of customers at 7am. There was also another full sit down restaurant across the way from chick-fila. I ventured to some restrooms that were kind of far, but sooo clean. They smelled like vanilla when I walked in! Overall, I'd recommend this airport!
google avatar

Lindsay D.

Yelp
Love this airport. So easy to get in and out. TSA Precheck only 5 min. Wish I could always fly out of here.
google avatar

Rabia J.

Yelp
I actually really like this airport compared to LAX airport. If you like less traffic and just overall a smaller airport, this is your place. We got direct flight on delta from Atlanta to this airport. Getting out of airplane to the baggage claim took five minutes. It was very fast. The service was fast and efficient. You don't have to walk very far and then you get your bags. The bathrooms could use some renovations and cleaning but they are decent. Like other reviewers said not many food options in the airport but still it's ok and the food establishments do close pretty early. The car rental and parking lots for your car, you need to take an airport shuttle which can get pretty crowded. It takes about 15-20 minutes to do this. But I rather fly into this airport than the crazy LAX airport which takes much longer most of the time.
google avatar

Linda H.

Yelp
Busy, busy, busy, on a summer Saturday morning! People all over the airport, but I have to admit, TSA really got us through - my son in a wheelchair and all! Had an early lunch at the Chick-fila-A and was impressed! Southwest agents were a bit stressed with all of the customers, but all in all it was easy and simple, clean, and an easy process.
google avatar

Silvia D.

Yelp
Quick drop off, quick check in, quick walk to the gate- this airport is spey convenient. I live in Rancho and love the fact that there's an airport less than 15 minutes from my house. I've used this airport for short trips to Las Vegas and even longer ones to NYC and I can't say enough good things about this place. Drop off and pick up might be a little backed up but it moves quickly. Yes it might be a little more expensive but it's worth the convenience. I'll definitely be using this airport again for my future travels.
google avatar

Amiee B.

Yelp
Such a a calm collected easy accessible airport with a Ramen machine that's provided. This is an airport I will definitely fly back into when I come this direction again.
google avatar

Brandon S.

Yelp
My family and I take flights in this airport to avoid the LAX traffic jam. The only problem is during the night when the entire airport looks like it's abandoned except with every single light on. There is no security and no staff walking around. It feels like a prime crime spot. The last few times I flew at night, I was the only passenger at the airport until roughly 10 minutes before boarding. It's like a scene straight out of a horror movie. Overall, it feels like trading safety for convenience. I'm cheap though, so that won't stop me from coming back to this nightmare of an airport for my flights.
google avatar

Rodger S.

Yelp
Best airport in SoCal. Fast to get through and easy to park. I have flown out of this airport for many years and it is as good as ever....
google avatar

James R.

Yelp
If you are flying into the L.A. area, this works great. It may cost a little more but I prefer the ease and less crowds. Arrival was easy. Picking up luggage was fast.
google avatar

Cliff B.

Yelp
I can only speak knowledgeably of Terminal 4 because I have not been through the others. Ontario is a nice sized airport, big enough to have places to eat and shop while you wait for your flight, but not so huge as to be a chore to check in and get through security. I arrived about 90 minutes prior to my flight. But since I had no bags to check, and already had my boarding pass, I only needed to get through security. It took very little time, especially since I had precheck. When you have precheck, they say you don't have to take off your belt, but the scanner beeped, and I had to take it off anyway, not a big deal, but next time I'll take if off anyway before I get to the metal detector. When you go through security, all they need is your ID and have you look into a camera. Face recognition technology tells them you are who you say you are. That's a bit scary if you've ever watched the TV show, "Person of Interest." It is what it is. Once in, I was able to get some coffee at Dunkin Donuts (they also have Starbucks and a few other eateries). Note for next time, Dunkin only takes cards, no cash. I prefer to use cash for small purchases, but "sigh" The seating area at the gate for my flight became quite full as the boarding time approached. Quite a few of us had to find a seat farther away at a gate nearby. Still, the airport had a nice feel, and lightyears better than LAX. When I go back to SoCal, I'll definitely keep Ontario Airport in mind as my preferred airport in the region.
google avatar

Laurie D.

Yelp
I will always fly out of Ontario rather than LAX any chance I get. There is no comparison. It's never super crowded and going through TSA is quick. Uber pickup is just outside of Baggage Claim and is easy. It's always a good experience when flying out of this airport!
google avatar

Natalie Y.

Yelp
Great airport! 100000 times better than LAX, not a ton of traffic and have only 2 terminals and 2 lanes but everything is efficient. They also have a lounge for Priority Pass members. If there's a chance to fly in here instead of LAX I would do it!
google avatar

Darleen P.

Yelp
If you can travel through Ontario vs lax I highly recommend it. Getting in and out is hassle free! I wish I could always fly from here!

This airport does the job! It's close, not huge, but has plenty of flights leaving all the time. The check in area moves quickly and getting upstairs through security is not bad. There's usually a good amount of parking available as well.

Yelp
This airport is all about convenience! I've flown out of this airport for almost 20 years and its nice to not deal with larget airports if you don't have to. Convenient parking and the rates aren't ridiculous.

Yelp
Traveling between Hawaii and Southern California... This was the first time I've used the Ontario International Airport (ONT). I didn't even know where Ontario, California was. I just had to book this flight on Hawaiian Airlines because the flight to Long Beach Airport was full. The Rental Car Facility is about 0.6 miles away from the Ontario International Airport. There's a free shuttle that goes between Terminal 2, Terminal 4, Parking Lot 6, and the Rental Car Facility. The good thing about this Rental Car Facility is that it doesn't close as early as the Rental Car Center at Long Beach Airport. Costco Gasoline in Rancho Cucamonga is about 2 miles from the Rental Car Center. It opens at 5:30am on weekdays and 6am on weekends. Overall, this airport is clean, modern, and has less traffic than LAX, Long Beach, and Tom Bradley International Airport. I think I will be switching to ONT when I go to Los Angeles from now on.
