Grapes From These Vineyards Make California's Top Wines — Here Are 16 Names to Know

"I view To Kalon—first planted in 1868—as one of Napa Valley’s oldest and greatest vineyards, now consisting of two adjacent parcels (one held by Robert Mondavi Winery and the other by grower Andy Beckstoffer) and best known for top-tier Cabernet; its history and quality command stratospheric prices. While To Kalon Cabernets are the headline, the site also yields notable whites such as the 2021 Robert Mondavi To Kalon Reserve Fumé Blanc, and collector-level Cabs like Tor’s 2022 Beckstoffer To Kalon Cabernet (currant, black cherry, lavender, bold tannins) and Realm’s 2019 Beckstoffer To Kalon Cabernet (iron-like minerality, black and blue fruit, cedary spice)." - Ray Isle, Jonathan Cristaldi

Yelp
Expensive yet iconic wine tasting in Napa Valley Honestly, my expectations weren't high from reading poor reviews about service and overall experience. But Opus One is a bucket list winery and a one-and-done visit, but I had a memorable time there during the holidays. The walk around tour was short but our host let us take our time to take photos. The property is beautiful and the wines are quality. The tasting includes 3 pours but we were given a couple extra tastes!

Yelp
Back for the tasting! It was fun. $200 for 3 wines and an Overture. The tour was insanely short though and it gets very busy being commercialized. If you've a lover Opus One, worth it.

Yelp
Love this place. Had such a fun time and made wonderful memories. Wine, Service, Ambiance is all very nice.

Yelp
Winery seven was a location that I had wanted to cross off the bucket list with Opus One Winery ever since I learned about the basics of wine varietals in 2002 at Crown Wine & Spirits in Coral Gables, Florida. Having learned about what Opus One was and how highly esteemed these Bordeaux-inspired reds are within California and the wine world, I always wanted to properly experience these red blends. The experience didn't disappoint as we loved enjoying the tasting lounge, the production areas, the aging room, and more, tasting delicious Bordeaux blend wines that brought us to a place of enlightenment. The grounds itself was epic and grand, a long driveway led you up to the opulent main buildings and entrance that has a classic yet dystopian feel. It feels like a bit of walk before you reach the massive front double doors to enter inside. From there, they led us to this smaller patio area where we enjoyed pours of their Overture red, 2017 Opus One, and 2019 Opus One vintages. Their wines were so exquisite and refined, certainly expensive, but you can taste the craftsmanship and care in addition to the quality of the grapes used to create them. After our tasting, we were taken on a tour of the production and barrel storage areas of the facility downstairs, which was quite grand, epic, and generated a sense of omnipotence. If you ever have the opportunity to tour Napa with its wineries, and appreciate something on the scale of Opus One, I would recommend scheduling a tasting and tour.

Yelp
After reading the reviews online I can see both sides while others feel enamored by the stunning building and high quality wine, you can get a sense of 'being abandoned' at the wine tour. We booked the courtyard experience. It was raining so we sat inside in a hall full of other people. There are 2-3 staff that go around and explain the wine and give you a tour downstairs. We weren't being approached for a while. I had to ask for breadsticks and we stared at the wine until Betu (Sorry if I mispronounced!) approached us and made us feel welcomed. Our wines were already set wine set. Pros: Stunning place, intentional wine, friendly staff. Cons: Not as an interactive wine tasting as others. The set up of the 'wine tasting' feels less than premium with the price tag you pay for the tasting. If you want a more fun interactive tasting I would skip this one. But if like high quality wine, this one is a good place to go for.

Yelp
From the moment I entered and checked in at the front desk, I felt so welcomed and knew that I would be well taken care of. Each of the staff are so personable to make your full experience as pleasant as possible. We opted for the Courtyard Experience, and each wine tasted superb. Our host explained each tasting with a great amount of detail and it was so fun to learn about the history of the winery. We ended up leaving with two bottles. I would definitely recommend booking reservations far in advance as they get booked quickly.

Yelp
WOW is the word to describe our first (and certainly not our last!) visit to Opus One. We were greeted by Jorge, who was an outstanding host who surpassed our expectations. He taught us how to enjoy wine, and also gave us great recommendations for spirits and restaurants. Very down to earth and would put anyone at ease. He even went so far as to offer suggested wine pairings for our dinner that night. And he took photos of us which was so nice! Wonderful memories here. Worth every penny. Ambience is amazing and very classy. Also has that 'wow' factor. It's not a stuffy place at all - wear jeans or something dressy if you want. The wine itself is exceptional, and you can tell right away that it's different. You'll still enjoy other wines after tasting it, but you certainly will be a bit of a wine snob after you've had it. We loved it, favorite winery of our trip (we also loved Inglenook, V. Sattui, and Cakebread).

Yelp
Pretty venue but wasn't a fan of the tasting room/space they had. The service was mediocre. We felt rush in our tasting and didn't enjoy our time.
google avatar

Kelvin D.

Yelp
You have to pay $25 for entrance fee If you don't want to do wine tasting My son and daughter do the wine tasting I am the diver I don't want to have any alcohol. I have to seat outside to wait for my kids. We did a wine tasting yesterday from Sterling . No entrance so ever. Won't come back and won't recommend to my any of friends. I don't like the entrance fee policy at all.

Yelp
Sadly this was the biggest let down out of trip. We pre-paid $135 pp for the courtyard experience... do not do that. The key learning here is that you can get SO much more with that money from other wineries - Opus One was not warm and friendly, they were rushing you from the minute the tour began (fast talking, abrupt ending) - 3 small red sips with very little explanation. A few tiny breadsticks. It just felt sad for the money we paid and did not match the winery's exquisite architecture and reputation. The experience should offer you MORE with better attention and care. We went to 7 wineries - this is at the bottom of our list, and I think that says a lot.
google avatar

Brett G.

Yelp
Wine 5 stars Service 1 star Overall experience 2 stars Save your time and money for better wine tasting experiences. Checked the box but would not recco for 125pp.

Yelp
The entire experience at Opus is incredible. From the moment you arrive the service is top notch. You receive a personal concierge throughout the wine tasting. The wine is obviously phenomenal, but our guide Caleb made it that much more special. He was so attentive, brought us snacks, answered our questions, and when we went to sit outside brought our wines out to us. We had a wonderful time learning about the history of Opus and chatting winemaking. The entire place is beautiful and the views breathtaking. The tour was fabulous. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and will definitely be back.

Yelp
Here's the thing there has to be an organized wine drinker in your group. We did not have that. Someone has to be responsible for making appointments. It's not just go to every winery and be welcomed in ....not since Covid at least. You need to make a reservation for each spot and drink quickly and not get sidetracked to meet your next reservation. That's super hard After a couple drinks. We needed to go into this place ! Simply because it's the best . When we got to the gate and we saw the sign that said called to make an appointment, we were only allowed to buy a bottle. Ok....... Now we are taking applications :Looking for a fourth organized wine drinker To make appointments for our next Wine tasting run ! LOL ! #FiveStarWine

Yelp
I had the tasting here and had a wonderful experience! The grounds are beautiful and this is some of the best wine I've ever had! This winery is dedicated to making a single bottle of wine each year and then creates a second wine the overture which is a blend of the best grapes that they did not use to create that year's wine. The tasting includes a tasting of this year's wine and a previous year in addition to the overture so three wines total served with a small snack plate. I had my tasting seated outdoor in the fall. The wine was excellent and I had the heater and was given a blanket to keep me warm. The sommelier led the tasting and was so friendly and knowledgeable. It is not a standard part of the tour however he went above and beyond and showed us both the production and the barrel room which was fun to see! The grounds here are stunning as well. You can take the wine to the upstairs which has beautiful views and comfortable seating. I would recommend this wine tasting to people that are more serious about wine. It is more expensive then other tastings and the quantity of wine is less. So if you're looking to get the most wine as possible for the cost this tasting may not be for you. However if your looking to appreciate some of the finest wine I would highly recommend having a tasting here. They do require reservations which I would recommend making a couple weeks in advance.
google avatar

Reena S.

Yelp
This winery and experience here was exquisite. Make sure make your reservations well in advance. When you arrive at the gate, you call to be let to enter. The drive up the winery is lined by trees, tastefully decorated holiday lights. The winery has a unique, modern esthetic that I appreciated. Large wreathes adorned the tall doors. The bathroom was super clean and smelled like a spa. Gregg was our wine host and was engaging, warm and well versed in wines. He gave us a nice background on the wines and we had the pleasure of tasting the 2019, 2017, Overture and the 2012. We were given all of the glasses at once, so that we would be able to taste the stark differences between them. All 4 were memorable in their own ways, and easy to drink, unlike other Cab blends that we've enjoyed. We bought a bottle of the Overture which is ready to be enjoyed without aging in bottle. Gregg personally gave us a tour, took photos for us, and was ever so kind to give us food recommendation in the local area. When we mentioned it was our anniversary, he helped us make reservations at Press and mentioned to them that it was our anniversary so that they would make it extra special. We will definitely be back and request Gregg for his exceptional service!

Yelp
Opus one was definitely my favorite spot for wine tasting in Napa Valley. Service was outstanding and everyone was super nice. Loved every second of it.

Yelp
10 out of 10 would recommend. Before visiting Opus I heard mixed reviews. Some said it was amazing and others said overrated. For me, it was the best wine tasting experience I had while in the region. Our host was Mark and he did not disappoint. We spent 90 minutes with Mark and tasted 4 vintages. He didn't bounce between us and other guests. He told us stories and answered all our questions. He also took us on a short tour. My fav vintages were 2013 and 2017. The views were breathtaking and the service and hospitality was top notch. Don't take my word for it...go check it out yourself.

Yelp
Wowwww!!! First off the grounds and architecture is one of the best I have experienced in Napa, as you drive up the view is grandiose. While walking up to the stairs you get a European feel with the olive trees, bright green lawn and beautiful patio. Our experience was unbelievable with our tasting overlooking the vineyards. It starts off with a tea , followed by 3 cabs and bite size pairings . The wine was fantastic I can't remember the years but I believe it was a 2010,2017,2019. The entire tasting and service was outstanding ! It was a feeling of peacefulness overlooking the vineyards , the weather was in the low 70's which was great. During the tour every thing was impeccable ! I really enjoyed the view in the lower level with the view of the barrels . I do recommend the Opus One Experience to wine lovers as it is on the higher end. It is quality over quantity here and the overall experience ! I will be recommending to all my family and friends !

Yelp
Had a wonderful experience compare to the others on here. From the greeting to champagne and the tour of the vicinity. Everything felt very personal and 2 hours flew by. The wine was top notch, but too expensive for me to purchase.

Yelp
We celebrate our anniversary in Napa, we've been wanting to go to Opus for sometime and my husband surprised me that day with reservations. From the moment we arrived the service was amazing. Cory our host was the best. The way he described the wine was incredible. The price is high, but we knew this, so this was a splurge for us. Opus wine is incredible, but I must say Overture was amazing too, we bought 6 bottles. Make sure Cory is your host and you will be taken care of. I definitely recommend this place, it's beautiful, the tour was nice and the wine is simply elegant.

Yelp
came on 11/3 with a group of 8 people at 3:30pm-ish. We were extremely excited to try Opus One, as when you walk in, it feels like you are in another world! Unfortunately, the service was just awful. Upon arriving to our "tasting", all of our wines were already poured in the glasses and ready to go with some glass covers over each glass. After sitting, a staff member came and assisted us briefly, in which e asked in what order we should drink the wines and he responds, "whichever order you like, you can jump around". We're all ... "ok"... we were expecting a more interactive tasting.. Fortunately, the young lady that gave us water and bread sticks was amazing, but we are definitely not going back. We did not finish our wines and it was our most expensive tasting that we truly looked forward to, but will never return to again

Yelp
Reviewing for the Opus One Partners' Room Experience. Opus One is the poster child for what a winery should be like, not just in America, but the world. The estate is beautiful, architecture is striking, decor is top class, and everything feels elegant. Green rolling grass mound around the estate, and the vineyard is very well-maintained. For the tasting experience itself, you are guided by a Sommelier, who stays with your group the entire time (personal tour!). They are very knowledgeable, usually have tons of experience in the wine industry, and can answer questions you have about Opus One, Napa Valley, and just wine in general. The Partner's Room Experience is particularly special because you are guided into a large lounge that is separate from the courtyard. It's a place that is flooded with modern and antique art (Napolean the Third's mirror is there), a beautiful view of the vineyard, and amazing drinks. For this experience, you usually start with a Champagne -- it's around mid-tier, like $50-70 a bottle range, so think Pol Roger and maybe Billecart-Salmon if you're lucky. Then, you move onto the 3 library vintages of Opus One. If I had to choose my favorite vintages so far -- I really liked 2015, 2016 and 2018. Usually on a single visit, you get an older vintage (10+ years ago), and two recent-ish vintages. Also, after COVID, you now get food served from a kitchen as well -- apparently they are coming up with a Michelin Restaurant plan in the future. Finally, after your tasting, you get to visit the barrels, the underground caves, the fermentation tanks, and some more rooms and history about the estate. Overall an amazing experience, and would highly recommend anyone trying to explore what the higher echelons of Napa are like!

Yelp
Good lord what can I say about this place that others have not already? The grounds and new tasting room are simply stunning. And don't leave a review till you've truly savored at least one vintage. I wish I have the room to store my collection in my office alone but this is a great problem to have.
google avatar

Annie L.

Yelp
Beautiful property, great wine, but pathetic "food and wine". We got a few cookies and a tiny bowl of nuts.... for an extra $100?!?! NOT WORTH IT!!! I recommend the wine tasting as a one-time experience, the service is great and property is beautiful, but we wouldn't go back for that price. There's plenty of other wineries with better pricing and better experience.
google avatar

Ben M.

Yelp
What an awesome experience! Felt like kings landing in game of thrones. Wine was ridiculously good and they keep the place looking incredible.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
This place definitely lived up to its hype! Huge shoutout to Mark - he was polite, funny, knowledgeable. All in all, we had an amazing time because of his hospitality. We were given three wines for our tasting. I believe the statement quality over quantity applies 1000% here. You definitely won't regret this winery if you're on the fence.
google avatar

Julie U.

Yelp
Greg greeted us with warm and fun hospitality this past weekend. He showed us around the winery and offered us such a great experience to taste the different wines. It was quite empty on a cold rainy day, but we had a fantastic time nonetheless. The wine is definitely top quality and made with the best, fresh fruit. He and others ensured that we enjoy their clean and comfortable atmosphere, and that we yearn for more opus wine tastings. We will definitely return!
google avatar

Yelp
We had a wonderful and relaxing visit to Opus One. Service and attention by Guillaume was outstanding. While the wine is pricey, it is certainly unique and memorable. Worth a stop if you've ever tasted his wine or ever been tempted to buy it.
google avatar

Yelp
Ambiance: Stunning grounds and architecture. Beautiful art and a gorgeous tasting room. Service: Our host was very knowledgeable Wine: We tried 5 reserve wines and they were absolutely phenomenal! So rich and complex. Among the best wines I've ever had.

Yelp
This is a review of the most recent "Courtyard Experience", at the time of this review it cost $100 per person. Let it be known, this is not a review based on the wine. The Bordeaux-style in regards to blends of grapes used, is fantastic. This review is based on the experience as a whole. This was the breakdown... upon check-in you are escorted through some of the property to your table [short walk]. This would be a great time to say at least something about the building, the rooms, or maybe the art. Sadly this was not the case. You are sat down and after a brief hello you are poured the current Overture release, a little info about the wine and then maybe 5 mins later, we were poured some of the 2016 and 2018 Opus vintages. Additional small bites are offered, and when I say small, I mean small. Nuts and a couple of savory cheese biscuit/cookies to try with the wine. I would say you learn the absolute bare minimum of information about the collaboration and that's about it. That's your general experience. After 45 mins and as your hour approaches its end, you can elect to purchase wine, or more by the glass or half pours, and enjoy the rest of the time top-level for some views. We didn't elect for any more purchases and walked to the top to finish. I say this.....for $100, you are getting verbatim what the website says. But for $100 almost anywhere else, you can have an amazing 1-1 experience [and I don't mean with any gondola rides or castles], cave tours, or just a little more of a real hands-on experience. You're paying to try the wine [again, the wine is good] but this whole experience was incredibly lack-luster, as in, I would never recommend this to anyone. I'm sure there's no shortage of purchasers and people who will always, no matter what, visit the Opus One property. But I say this.....I would describe the overall experience as sterile, like super dry but polite. In the end what did I really experience? I drank the wine and honestly that was it. Beto was our server, and he's probably doing everything management has trained him to do, but to the Marketing and "Ideas" Team, this Courtyard Experience could be easily more for the price. Little things could go such a long way. The experience just fell completely short.

Yelp
You simply will not find a more luxurious winery than Opus One! I recently took a family trip to Napa Valley, and my visit to Opus One was by far the highlight of my trip. Every wine they served (ranging from 2012-2019) was absolutely incredible and high-quality in taste. The staff were beyond kind and accommodating, and the entire experience was like something out of a fairytale. We had the option to enjoy our wine and snacks indoors, or walk around the grounds and soak in the sunshine. The views from the top deck are breathtaking and I encourage everyone to take a walk up there to look at the mountains and scenery. I will happily travel back to the West Coast from the East Coast just to go back to Opus One - already planning my next trip!
google avatar

Michelle N.

Yelp
It was so beautiful here and the service was so nice. It feels very fancy but Brenda was warm, personable and answered all of our questions. She not only talked about the wine and the building but also the art. I'm not huge on reds but these were delicious. I really enjoyed both the 2006 and 2015. Even the breadsticks they served with the wine were really good quality. I really enjoyed seeing the barrel room and being able to take a group photo there. Highly recommend this place for the good service and experience.
google avatar

Michelle V.

Yelp
First of all, we have driven passes this place and keep saying we will visit for the last 6 years. Today we finally made it. Although we were late, they were still able to seat us. We had 3 glasses: 2017, 2019, and Overture. They served us almonds and cheese shortbread which paired very well with the wine. It was very short. Then we went upstairs to check out the views. The staff are absolutely wonderful!

Yelp
What an epic experience. Opus One is largely known for their beautifully crafted wine, and their winery is like none other I have ever experienced. Their recent remodel boasts gorgeous views of their vineyard, and beyond. Not to mention expertly crafted wine. We were graced with the pleasure of meeting Therese as our guide. Therese was so lovely, and beyond knowledgeable. Her tenure there radiates through in her excitement and her expertise. Cannot wait to return.

Matt C.

Yelp
Myself and two friends were hosted by Therese Keating a couple of weeks ago, she greeted us at the door with great energy as well as a kind and warm demeanor. She made us feel at home and explained the fermentation/wine characteristics in a simple yet intriguing way. As someone who can fortunately say has tasted at many Napa Valley wineries Therese is one of the best hosts in the industry. She was able to explain the greatness of Opus One Winery but not hog the microphone, make sure to request an experience with Therese.

Yelp
I don't know where to even start! Greg! You did such an amazing job of showing us around and giving us a great time! We'll definitely be coming back for you! You made our experience so fun! It's so cool how you're so knowledgeable about the wines. The place is very nice for pictures! The wine barrel room was very cool! Definitely check this place out when you're in Napa!

Reilly M.

Yelp
This is an overpriced and disingenuous experience. The people that work here are over rehearsed and just come across as fake. There was only one wine in our flight that was actually drinkable. Our tour was super short and left us wanting more for the price we paid. You strictly only come here for the views and pictures because everything else is overrated.

Meagan M.

Yelp
Absolutely a must when visiting the Napa area! My partner and I went yesterday and had Greg as our host. The wine was everything we hoped it would be and more! Greg was so personable and an absolute delight. Put this on your list and splurge a bit. It was our favorite winery and experience of our trip!
google avatar

Alyssa A.

Yelp
Words honestly can't describe how good the wine is here. Our friend recommended we try a tasting, but we were not prepared for how delicious this wine was going to be. The entire winery is absolutely gorgeous, and while the tasting was a little more expensive than we have paid at other wineries, it was more than worth it. Truly enjoyed our time here.
google avatar

Ju L.

Yelp
Alas the long-awaited wine tasting we've waited all week for has arrived! Opus One's wine tasting experience did not disappoint. There are two tours, the "Enjoy a flight in the courtyard" ($100pp) and "Experience the Opus One Partners' Room" ($125pp). I would recommend going with the latter. This is arguably the best deal you'll get in Napa Valley, considering all their wines you get to taste; and having your own customized private tour is nice too. Upon our arrival, we were met with our hostess, who was very personable and professional. The "Experience the Opus One Partners' Room" included a guided private tour. Apparently, your host/hostess can work with you to make your experience however you want it to be. Our tour started with a glass of champagne (not a product of Opus One). Our hostess showed us to the tasting room, and the view of the balcony overlooking the vineyard, while providing us with a bit of Opus One history, and answering all our questions we have about Opus One. Then we went back inside the tasting room, to our reserved seat, where our hostess introduced the wines included in our tasting ('18, '16 and '08), and we got to take our time to savor every drop of the wines. The entire experience was limited to 90 minutes, so our hostess did check on us a few times, but was careful not to be intrusive. Our hostess also let us have a taste of the Overture (not included in the tasting). Since my husband enjoyed the '08 so much, she gave him an extra pour. Then, with 30 minutes left, we wanted to see and understand the winemaking process, so our hostess showed us their wine making facility, which was the cleanest wine making facility I've ever seen, like a laboratory. Before concluding the tour, our hostess also showed us the Barrel Room and took some pictures for us. Visiting Opus One was a dream come true. It also hyped us up for our tasting at Robert Mondavi across the street.
google avatar

Jay F.

Yelp
Opus One is quintessentially Napa Valley. Their winery with its views of the valley floor is majestic. The tour, with Leo as our guide, was truly exceptional and informative. The tasting of 3 library wines paired with small bites was wonderful. Finished the tour by hanging out on their balcony enjoying the sun and the view while sipping their magnificent wine. It by no means is cheap but it truly is an experience worth having.
google avatar

Devin O.

Yelp
Worth. The. Hype. If you can get in for a tasting, do it! The grounds are incredible. We went on a Monday and got lucky that we had such an awesome tasting host, he gave us a tour of the entire place. The wine is incredible. We got to try some very expensive and old stuff that they still had. Amazing!
google avatar

Tiffany S.

Yelp
This place was amazing. I loved having a personal concierge take us on the tour and talk us through our tasting.

Yelp
I have always wanted to experience Opus One and was able to on my Birthday! It was magical and everything that I had hoped for and more! The experience was exquisite, ambiance refined and accessible, service was personable and felt tailored to us! Take the time and add this to your list of Napa MUSTS!. Greg was the best guide for this fantastic experience!

Yelp
Wonderful experience, service and wine. About a week before visiting Napa I booked one of the last appointments to come taste at Opus One over the weekend. It was a 10:15am tasting. It is a pretty small tasting area. I sat at a table and was brought 3 wines to taste and a few nibbles to pair. They encourage you to take a glass of wine and walk around the grounds. I went up to the veranda area and the sun was gorgeous and it was a beautiful day. Stayed about an hour just enjoying the wine and sunshine. There is not a lot of selection and the wines are VERY expensive. But with Opus One, if you know, you know.

Se G.

Yelp
This is kinda of a bucket list location. Tasting was $200/person and $50 for non tasters. But the ambience was amazing and the service impeccable. Our host gave us a personal tour after the tasting. The wines are for serious collectors -we indulged for special occasions with family.
google avatar

Faye M.

Yelp
What a great experience! Driving down the long path reminded me of Nine Perfect Strangers! Our host was Gregg and he was so nice and accommodating, since they first offered the high tops, but my aunty is elderly and short LOL so they sat us indoors. I liked the 2015 Opus One, it tasted smoother than the 2017. We got to tour the cellar area and the rooftop, which had great views! I will definitely return during my next visit to the Napa area!

Nicole T.

Yelp
Ridiculous! I get that your appointments are full up but have a space where people can come in a taste a sip before being sat on a bench with a menu for carry out. The level of pretentiousness was off the charts here. Get it together.
google avatar

Edmond T.

Yelp
Another great tasting at Opus One! We try to visit quarterly and since January 2022 opus debut the "experience" with small bites, I am excited to check it out. For anyone that wants a great experience, opus is the place to be. The history, the wine, the hospitality, the architecture, really can't beat this!
