New Zealand is blessed with incredible geothermal attractions – and one of the most underrated (perhaps the most underrated) is Orakei Korako.
The beautifully designed walking track (about 2.5 km) is maintained with great care and in excellent condition. Everything feels clean, safe, and thoughtfully arranged. From the parking area, there is a constant boat shuttle that takes you across to the start of the walk – smooth, easy, and well organized.
Along the way you can admire stunning silica terraces, steaming vents, geysers (not artificially triggered, but truly authentic geothermal activity), bubbling mud pools, and even see fascinating boiling mud holes up close. Compared to other geothermal hotspots in New Zealand, there are relatively few visitors, which makes the experience even more special. You can explore the landscapes at your own pace without feeling rushed or crowded.
And to top it off, there’s a lovely little café right by the lake. A special thanks to Hillary and the team for the warm and friendly service – it truly adds to the overall joy of the visit.
The only downside is that the park is not wheelchair accessible, so visitors with mobility challenges may find some areas difficult to reach.
Highly recommended for anyone looking to experience New Zealand’s geothermal beauty in a relaxed and authentic setting!
