While it looks idyllic, we found out the hard way that it's not as safe as it looks. After a lovely braai and a relaxing afternoon, the wind started to pick up and we all went to bed around 21h. When I woke up 3h later, someone had sneaked in while we were sleeping and taken all our bags out and gone through them just below the Disa tent. We all packed up and drove out at 1am. Even though SAN Parks claim that they lock the gates at 5pm, the gate was wide open and the security post unmanned. So either SAN Parks are cutting on security costs or this was an inside job. Needless to say, do not go there with kids, this is not camping, it is too close to the city and there is no cellphone reception should anything happen.
NB SAN Parks' answer:
With reference to Security :The Deposit request letter and the confirmation letter both state that there is no guard patrolling in the camp itself.
Orangekloof tented camp is not in a fenced closed off area of the park and there is more than one access route to the camp and hence we don’t lock down the camp at night
The gate you mention is an operational gate which we do not lock the gate at night.
Our staff patrol the camp precinct at night and are not based at the gate which is more than a kilometre from the camp nor do they patrol directly in the camp itself.
