I ordered a latte, a cappuccino, an apple pie, and a cheesecake for my wife and I to eat in, and I ordered two chocolate cakes and four chocolate chip cookies for my teenage boys in to-go boxes, all for a grand total of approximately $65, which is a little bit more expensive than what I pay at a nice cafe in Manhattan for these same items, but is perfectly normal for a town in the middle of nowhere in Central America. I am on the side of the locals with respect to prices because I grew up in a southern Mediterranean country that makes a living off of overcharging tourists, and I encourage other locals in other parts of the world to overcharge tourists whenever I travel, God bless them, but when you overcharge tourists, you need to deliver on quality. Unfortunately, the espressos in the latte and cappuccino I ordered were very weak. The apple pie was very strange and had a creamy, sugary texture. The chocolate cakes were dry and had the same taste as frozen chocolate cakes in an American supermarket. As you can see in the photo, the Orchid employees needed to save money on carton boxes and put the chocolate cakes on top of each other. Just to be clear regarding how absurdly cheap these people are, note that the waiter originally wanted to place the chocolate cakes and the four cookies all in the same box, no doubt because he thought they would all taste great together in a giant dessert soup, but I had to insist on at least two separate boxes. All in all, avoid this place if all you want is coffee and desserts. We will come back for lunch to check out the food since this place is highest rated place in town in every single tourism guide.
UPDATE (one star for desserts but four stars for burgers):
We had a chance to come back for lunch and ordered 4 burgers. We all loved it! The temperature was exactly right, the meat was high quality, and the brioche bun was delicious. Each burger costs about $23, but that is exactly how much I pay in Manhattan for a burger of similar quality. I do not mind paying the same price for the same quality.
My advice to them is to stop selling coffee and desserts and to stop offering items to-go since we had a ridiculous experience. If you absolutely have to have a dessert, the cookies and cheesecake is okay. Otherwise, just come for lunch.
