This Scenic Train Ride in an Old-fashioned Locomotive Has Open-air Cars and Seaside Stops

"A heritage sightseeing railroad that runs along a pine-covered stretch of the Oregon coast between Garibaldi and Rockaway Beach, offering cinematic views of tidal flats, fishing boats, weathered piers and coastal forest. The signature Oregon Coastal Excursion is typically a 90-minute roundtrip (about 30 minutes each way with a 30-minute layover) that departs from either town and includes onboard narration about the route’s history and sights; travelers can also book a later return if they want more time ashore to explore local restaurants, shops or the beach. Most trains are pulled by a 99-year-old steam locomotive (occasionally replaced by a historic diesel), with the locomotive type noted at checkout. Seating options include indoor Coach and Table cars with cushioned seats and sliding windows, plus Covered Open and Open Top outdoor cars with bench seating; small pets are allowed only in the outdoor cars. The service is wheelchair accessible via a lift at Garibaldi (wheelchair passengers must board there and remain onboard during the Rockaway Beach layover if they need the lift), and fares start around $32 for adults, $24 for children (ages 3–12), $27 for seniors, with infants free—tickets are available online." - Evie Carrick Evie Carrick Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. A group of us stayed in a Rockaway Beach vacation home over the weekend and were looking for something fun to do together. We checked online and found the Fall Splendor Excursion train ride. It cost $32 per adult. We boarded in Rockaway Beach, stopped in Wheeler for 45 minutes, then rode it back to Rockaway Beach. The full ride was 2 hours 15 minutes long. We found out online that they were running their steam locomotive the weekend we were there and that was super cool. The scenery was nice. We rode along the coastline, seeing beaches, towns and forests. Since it was a nice day, we rode in the open-air train car. We saw many birds including seagulls, great blue herons, egrets, cormorants, bald eagles and ducks. The staff was super friendly, helpful and accommodating. They narrate part of the trip with local history and alerting riders when wildlife is present for viewing. We bought our tickets once we boarded the train. Many riders bought them online beforehand. If you want an enclosed train car, I would recommend buying them online as those cars fill up fast. We had a great time and are looking forward to riding to Garibaldi next time!

This train ride was fantastic! I really missed the gentle relaxing feeling of riding a train, it was so soothing. I reserved the indoor seats because our tickets were for November and I didn’t want to be stuck in the rain but it was a beautiful day and half way through the ride we went outside to the open car close to the engine and with the sunshine, cool air and scenery it was beautiful. The bay front was gorgeous with seals, whales, bald eagles and more. This was a wonderful day!

Such a fun experience! My first true time on a train and it was gorgeous!! We took the 2 hr ride to Wheeler and back and loved every second! We enjoyed sitting in the open car and being surrounded by the gorgeous views!! We didn’t book online and went to the first departure on a Saturday morning and were able to buy tickets while boarding the train!

I took my daughter and seven and two-year-old grandchildren on the round trip from Rockaway to Garibaldi. It was so much fun. The narrator told us many interesting facts about the area which made it enjoyable and educational! My recommendation would be to stay a full hour in Garibaldi. We were running back to the train to make it because we only stayed half of an hour.

Lovely time on the Moonlight ride. Gorgeous views, easy ticketing process and plenty of room. Bring a blanket and warm clothes if you're sitting outside in the open car-indoors was just fine with a light coat. The only disappointment was no vegan or vegetarian food options, besides a small salad. The charcuterie with just crackers/fruit/cheese would be so perfect, thanks for giving that a think. The cupcakes were delicious, and a very sweet surprise. Perfect date night!

The ride was fantastic. The narrations and stories were delightful. Each direction highlighted different historical aspects of the region making both directions fresh and new. We had table seating. I would recommend this excursion to anyone visiting the area. We opted for extra time in Garibaldi so took some time walking around seeing the exterior of the old trains, then walking to the boat docks, observed the fish cleaning station, and discovered the Sea Barron food truck across the street. They serve the days catch fresh. And since the conductor mentioned the DQ we stopped in there as well.

Very informative, beautiful view and a knowledgeable guided train ride. You learn about the history of the historical railroad and the towns you pass through. We did the fall splendor excursion from Rockaway Beach to Wheeler and arrived just in time for some ice cream right across the street during our layover.
