This Scenic Train Ride in an Old-fashioned Locomotive Has Open-air Cars and Seaside Stops

"A heritage sightseeing railroad that runs along a pine-covered stretch of the Oregon coast between Garibaldi and Rockaway Beach, offering cinematic views of tidal flats, fishing boats, weathered piers and coastal forest. The signature Oregon Coastal Excursion is typically a 90-minute roundtrip (about 30 minutes each way with a 30-minute layover) that departs from either town and includes onboard narration about the route’s history and sights; travelers can also book a later return if they want more time ashore to explore local restaurants, shops or the beach. Most trains are pulled by a 99-year-old steam locomotive (occasionally replaced by a historic diesel), with the locomotive type noted at checkout. Seating options include indoor Coach and Table cars with cushioned seats and sliding windows, plus Covered Open and Open Top outdoor cars with bench seating; small pets are allowed only in the outdoor cars. The service is wheelchair accessible via a lift at Garibaldi (wheelchair passengers must board there and remain onboard during the Rockaway Beach layover if they need the lift), and fares start around $32 for adults, $24 for children (ages 3–12), $27 for seniors, with infants free—tickets are available online." - Evie Carrick Evie Carrick Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. I took my daughter and seven and two-year-old grandchildren on the round trip from Rockaway to Garibaldi. It was so much fun. The narrator told us many interesting facts about the area which made it enjoyable and educational! My recommendation would be to stay a full hour in Garibaldi. We were running back to the train to make it because we only stayed half of an hour.

The ride was fantastic. The narrations and stories were delightful. Each direction highlighted different historical aspects of the region making both directions fresh and new. We had table seating. I would recommend this excursion to anyone visiting the area. We opted for extra time in Garibaldi so took some time walking around seeing the exterior of the old trains, then walking to the boat docks, observed the fish cleaning station, and discovered the Sea Barron food truck across the street. They serve the days catch fresh. And since the conductor mentioned the DQ we stopped in there as well.

Lovely time on the Moonlight ride. Gorgeous views, easy ticketing process and plenty of room. Bring a blanket and warm clothes if you're sitting outside in the open car-indoors was just fine with a light coat. The only disappointment was no vegan or vegetarian food options, besides a small salad. The charcuterie with just crackers/fruit/cheese would be so perfect, thanks for giving that a think. The cupcakes were delicious, and a very sweet surprise. Perfect date night!

It was a nice scenic ride, not too long, with fun/interesting facts delivered by Bruce. The crew were welcoming and professional, some being volunteers. The microclimates can be interesting! It was windy, chilly, and cloudy in Rockaway Beach. Yet sunny and warm in Garibaldi. Prepare accordingly! Would ride again.

This was so much fun! We departed from Garibaldi at noon and had a 30 minute ride to Rockaway Beach. We stayed there until 3. Had a bite to eat, walked around the area, went to some shops and got to stop by the beach! Highly recommend having a layover in Rockaway Beach as there seems to be more to do there. There are no bathrooms on board but there are restrooms at the Garibaldi station as well as parks at both stations which was perfect for my 2 year old. We sat inside on the way there and sat outside on the covered cart on the way back which was WAY better imo!

Great little train ride that gives you some views you can’t get from your car. I recommend the west side of the covered outdoor car, but the completely open car was nice too. Conductor was a lot of fun.

Took the moonlight excursion on 7/5 which left Garibaldi at 730p and headed north for an hour and a half before switching the engine and then back down to Garibaldi. This was just gorgeous and priced reasonably for 3 hours and 2 beverages. This trip was 21+, and everyone was ID checked before boarding. Those who worked on board were friendly and professional. It's only available every 3rd Saturday so plan accordingly. I will do this again but would love at least minimal narration on the trip up during daylight. Then when the train stops for the engine switch, and it's dark, it would be great to have the inside car's light dimmed so those that have chosen to sit there can much more easily enjoy the moon and stars. It could then return to normal once last call is announced, about 15 minutes before returning to Garibaldi.
