10 Best Museums in Portland, OR | Condé Nast Traveler

"Nautical nerds will love the chance to explore the Oregon Maritime Museum, located in the last operating sternwheel steam tug in the country: the jaunty blue-and-white Portland, moored on the Willamette River in Tom McCall Waterfront Park. Tour the pilot house and engine room with passionate volunteer docents, browse the myriad models, maritime artifacts, and memorabilia, and pick the brains of the well-schooled librarians and researchers that oversee the comprehensive museum library. Once a month, June through September, the Portland “blows out the carbon” and sets sail as part of the Willamette Sternwheeler Cruise series—the four-hour cruises ($88 for adults, $38 for kids), which are limited to 100 people, include lunch, and passengers get to see the wheelhouse and engine room in action. Book early—they tend to sell out." - Jen Stevenson

Although google maps says it is open today, the website says only Thursday and Saturday from 1-5pm. Be sure to check the website before coming to this museum. Looks interesting — but not open today. Edit - came back on Saturday for hours listed on their website. Again closed. Clearly a few people on board (staff presumably), but gate is closed before 4 despite stated hours until 5pm.

I had so much fun here! Our tour guide was fantastic, super knowledgeable and gave a really great tour of the whole boat and its history. The volunteer guides were both very sweet and seemed genuinely passionate about their job. One thing to know is that (I'm pretty sure) you have to book a tour on the website, or else you can't gain entrance to the boat. Hence some of the negative reviews where people just showed up to the gate and couldn't enter. I would say this experience is well worth it, especially if you're a history buff or like boats.

Had an amazing time at this museum that doesn’t get too much attention. Lots of amazing little pieces of history and tons of models and artifacts that makes for a great way to spend an hour or two. The hourly tours that take you through every aspect of the working steam powered boat. Prices are reasonable and not too expensive, views on and off the boat are fantastic. Not too crowded and it’s a perfect way to enjoy a little piece of the past. Staff is super friendly and location is perfectly situated near downtown.

I loved my experience touring this ship. One of the volunteers gave us a very informative tour and I could tell he felt passionate about the care and keeping of this ship. It's all volunteer run so it's important to donate and keep visiting treasures like this! This is the only ship of its kind in the US!

Great tour guide. Really cool engine room!

Google
Nice looking boat, but I should have read the reviews first. I visited on Saturday afternoon, in the middle of their opening hours. Their website, Facebook page and Google all agree the museum should be open, but the gate was firmly locked. No information why anywhere to be found. Have they closed permanently, or do they just not like visitors?

Came on a Friday but was met with this closed sign. Looks like they're doing maintenance on the boat. Would recommend you to call ahead of your visit to confirm, regardless of what Google or their website says.

Yelp
Initial impression pre-visit: Super snoozy, probably a bunch of black and whites of salty captains and regaling tales of cannery. Reality: Absolutely engrossing. Dropped anchor here on New Year's Day after reading that it was "One of Oregon's Best Museums" and I will co-sign that claim. Our visit started with a 3D movie about the lives of sea turtles...cute and informative. Did you know that we actually have some of them in the PNW? Next came exhibits on the Coast Guard, found objects of interest, maps, weapons, science, weather, economy, and more. My favorite parts were listening to a real Coast Guard rescue call, and an old Spanish sword that had been discovered on the beach. There was a display on lighthouses, though I would like to see a full exhibit on them as they are magical. #1 takeaway: Appreciation and understanding of how the Coast Guard serves our country. I took a select few pics as I don't want this to be one of those reviews where you feel you've seen everything beforehand so why visit now? This museum is honest and evocative, sail on in and enjoy!

Yelp
Seems to be closed despite listed hours indicating it would be open. Ghosts only museum?

Yelp
Visit this nice little attraction on the water front of the river next to downtown Portland for something different. It is really worth the visit and gives you a good glimpse into the history of Oregon's riverboat days. This is a good activity to do just about any time, but we went first thing when they opened and got our own private tour by one of the very knowledgeable docents. He really went into great detail about all aspects of the boat, the things that happened back in the day and current facts as it was related to why they were there and how they existed. It won't take up much of your time, but will fill an hour or more. This attraction is great for both adults and kids of all ages. Don't forget to ask for AAA discount if you are a card member.

Yelp
A fantastic way to learn about transportation from past years. Upon entrance we were greeted by Jerry who welcomed us to look around while we wait for our tour. Our guide, Michael Ryan, was fantastic. We went over the ship in detail, talking about improvements and the technology used. I highly recommend this tour.

Yelp
What a great way to spend an afternoon! We visited when family was in town and wanted something unusual to do. None of us are particularly into maritime history, but it kept all of us - even the kids - interested anyway. Ralph gave us a personalized tour and was very knowledgeable. I'd bring visitors back again, and encourage others to support this little museum.

Yelp
Charming little museum. Michael was our tour guide and was very knowledgeable and friendly. For $7 we toured the engine room, the main gift shop, captain's cabin, first mate's cabin, and the pilot house. The bow is off limits. Learned about the history of Portland and it was interesting to see the route the boat took to Lewiston. Highly recommend. Also active duty military enter free. They set sail four times a year check out their website for info.

Yelp
Don't bother going to this museum. Sign said open on Weds, last tour at 315pm. I was there but the gate was padlocked and no one in sight

Yelp
This is an awesome ship-borne museum. With great and dedicated staff who have been spending decades refurbishing the ship, the guided tours are informative, detailed, personal and plain old awesome-sauce. Everyone onboard is super-friendly, and they have a lot to share about the history of the Oregon shipping trade. While we don't have kids, the museum is definitely kid-friendly, and has an entire section devoted to little ones. Not being able to believe that I'm the first one to review it, I beseech you to go visit this awesome and unique museum!

Yelp
Friendly and knowledgable docent, Phillip, and cashier, Mary. We just picked this museum because we were in the area. We really enjoyed the tour and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in knowing more about historical vessels and the local riverboat community.
