I’ve been to Oretta before, specifically the King West location, and my first experience truly set a high standard. It felt sophisticated, the portions were generous for the price, and the menu was thoughtfully curated with great flavour and execution.
After that great first visit, I returned another time with friends and felt the quality declined a bit. But because I was still hopeful that was one time thing, I chose to come back again for Valentine’s Day, expecting the same level of quality like the first time, for a special occasion.
Unfortunately, this Valentine’s Day experience was incredibly disappointing.
We had a fixed menu, which at $90+ per person sounded promising based on the options listed. However, the experience did not live up to expectations. The food noticeably lacked flavour, and the overall quality truly had downgraded despite the pricing remaining just as high.
The main entrée was particularly underwhelming. Typically, a main course comes well balanced with sides, but mine arrived with vegetables that didn’t blend together and an excessive amount of oil on the fish and plate. It felt poorly thought out and unbalanced. As for dessert, we were expecting a family style portion to share, but the tiramisu portion was barely enough. For a fixed menu at this price point, especially for Valentine’s Day, the portions and execution simply did not justify the cost.
To make matters worse, we were charged a large party fee even though there were only two of us. That was extremely disappointing and felt unreasonable.
Additionally, we were seated right beside the station where staff retrieve cutlery. This lack of attention to detail set the tone early on. The waitresses and staff, who were lovely and friendly, had to frequently access the area, often bumping into my chair and forcing me to squeeze closer to the table. It disrupted the evening and took away from what should have been a comfortable and intimate dinner.
The space itself is beautiful, and the staff were kind and professional. However, when you are charging premium prices for a special occasion, the overall dining experience, from food quality and portion sizes to seating arrangements and additional fees, needs to reflect that. Sadly, this time it did not.
I truly hope they refocus on quality and thoughtful execution rather than raising prices for special occasions without delivering the value to match.
