The Best Destination Spas in the US & Around the World: 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards

"On the aquamarine water of Lake Wörthersee in southern Austria, the Original FX Mayr is a destination for resetting your health. Their legendary “cure” combines medical and therapeutic treatments, plus intermittent fasting, to cleanse the body and mind. A supremely comfortable setting helps guests navigate a one- or two-week cure program. Rooms are cozy and coastal grandmother chic, with earthy colors like taupe and terra cotta, and peaceful lake views. Between the main building and beach house, you’ll find Finnish saunas, sanariums, steam rooms, and an indoor pool. In addition to medical examinations and diagnostic tests, all guests receive classic massages, lymphatic drainage, abdominal massages, and hayflower detox wraps. Meals feature bright seasonal ingredients (with zero raw vegetables, sugar, alcohol, or gluten)."

I never write reviews but just read one written by a guest who was there at the same time and I felt the need to provide another perspective. I have been to The Original FX 3 times and have stayed at other more luxurious spas over the years, but they don't have the substance. There is intention behind everything they do. Fx Mayr is understated but the facility has everything your need and many of the staff have been there over 10-15 years from the dinning room team, therapists and medical staff. The facilities feel more like a home than a medical spa. As for the food, given the goal is to put you in Ketosis, I think it's outstanding and thoughtfully delivered. Yes there are classes they charge for but many other services are included. They charge $50 EUR for a cooking class and I have seen others charge $150 EUR. If you want to see up charges I can recommend several other spas that are more expensive and far less technical on the medical side. The best part about FX Mayr is the medical team. You are immediately given a baseline blood test and prescribed natural medicines with 3 medical check ups during the week with your doctor. I have been fortunate enough to have the same doctor each time and my wife also had an amazing experience with her doctor. Yes there can be schedule mixups given the constant changes guests make to their schedules but you have a revised schedule on your table each morning, which is the same every day of your stay and the dinning room staff is amazing and has been with FX Mayr for many years. The dinning staff always goes to the medical team each day to get your medicine and supplements and delivers them to your table. They care just as much as the medical team and therapists. FX Mayr is for someone wanting understated luxury with a focus on the medical and not the hocus pocus of other more famous spas.

I achieved decent results overall, but the experience at the Original Mayr left quite a bit to be desired. The organisation was surprisingly poor for a clinic of this calibre: I frequently received the wrong meals for my programme, appointments were booked at incorrect times, test results weren’t returned on a timely basis, and mid-stay check-ins were mistakenly arranged for the end of my stay. Language barriers occasionally led to further errors.||The food, while understandably simple due to the nature of the programme, was extremely monotonous — even within the constraints of a dietary regime, more variety and creativity should be possible. Staff were mixed: some were excellent, offering thoughtful and pragmatic guidance for sustainable health improvements; others less so.||Feedback, whether offered constructively or in response to clear mistakes, was generally met with indifference or, in some cases, a dismissive attitude — from both staff and management. This lack of openness detracts from the sense of personal care the clinic aims to promote.||There’s also a tendency to charge extra for many things — including some for which it feels unnecessary to do so, like a breathwork class — which creates an unfortunate impression of opportunism. Several treatments felt a bit pseudoscientific and unconvincing, and the persistent sound of jet washing during the day certainly didn’t help the supposed atmosphere of tranquillity.||A stay here can still be beneficial, but expectations should be managed — especially at this price point.

There aren’t enough words to describe what wonderful facility this is. The staff are all so friendly and kind. There’s no ‘them’ and ‘us’ feeling. There is such a lovely atmosphere. I felt amazing from the moment I arrived and the method they employ is brilliant. The different departments all know what the others are doing and its a well oiled machine that leaves the guest feeling confident and relaxed. |Food is brilliant. Rooms are comfy. There wasn’t one member of staff I encountered that was below par. I would definitely return

As COVID seems to be under control I was able to return for my 10th visit. Obviously I am believer in “the cure” or I wouldn’t keep going back. I’m always a bit doubtful as their methods are a bit weird, but if you follow them it really is life changing. I only stayed a week, but I left feeling like a new person.||Lots of renovations seem to have been carried out since I was last there. I had a very nicely decorated apartment with 2 terraces-a small one facing the lake and a very large one with sun loungers facing the golf course.||The treatments are fantastic- most are included in your package- but you can have additional ones which cost extra. I opted for an amazing session with an osteopath and some extra vitamin infusions.||I love to eat, but to my surprise I realised I could survive on less than 1000 calories a day. The food and presentation is excellent.||I used their e bikes every afternoon for rides around the lake and nearby villages and also took long walks. The scenery is breathtaking.||I can’t praise all the doctors, therapists, dining room crew, housekeeping, etc enough..super friendly.||I’ll end here, but all I can say is do you system a favour and go!

The hotel is functional, comfortable, immaculately clean and well maintained. Public rooms are comfortable with views of the lake. The views are spectacular. The hotel is built on a hill, there are four floors and the basement leads onto tiered terraces, all in all five or so floors with no lift. There is an electric golf cart that helps people with mobility issues. The stunning floating sun deck is accessed via a bridge and a lift down. This area is right by the lake where you can swim or take a boat and is quiet and wonderfully relaxing. Our room was very comfortable with a balcony and a view of the lake at an angle, but lots of big unnecessary furniture that filled the room. Housekeeping in the rooms was so so some maids better than others. Treatments, were very good. However, at each consultation when you arrive you are given the big sell. Everything outside of your package from nutrition, beauty, fitness, even the shuttle to the nearest town is extra! Food is light but very good. Depending upon your recommended calorie intake a daily meno is prepared for you. Strangely I was not hungry, but the emphasis is on drinking lots of water. Service throughout is excellent and it is clear that most staff have worked there for many years. Why do people come back year after year? The Mayr cure is world renowned and it works. We had a wonderfully relaxing week. The only drawback, it is eye wateringly expensive!|

A short getaway , but actually one should stay for two weeks for maximal benefit from ‘Kur’!||We were pleasantly surprised by ‘a new way of eating’ and also a diet to lose weight which we are carrying on at home!||‘Basenkur’ is the name of the diet-Bland eating!||Goats Yoghurt and Buckwheat for breakfast. On Sunday one egg of your choice- fried or scrammbled.||Everything is already portioned and served-no buffet!! Same for Lunch-mini healthy Soups and healthy vegetable dishes or bland pizza with vegetables and goats cheese-surprisingly tasty! In the evening there is a Soup. You can choose between two choices! Sorry no dessert!!!||The Hotel is situated on the Dellach Woerthersee Golfclub and on the Woerthersee Waterfront with its own private ‘beach’ which is secluded . There is a Sauna area here and after a lovely Sauna one can jump into the lakes crystal clear water and swim with the fishes! Lovely experience- very invigorating.||The Staff were extremely friendly and very jovial. The atmosphere is very relaxed. There is an indoor pool which is heated and one can sit inside or out on a grass terrace. The surroundings provide for all the sounds of nature which is truly calming and relaxing.||We were sorry to leave- but will return next year in spring!

1 star.||Money grabbing, not caring - just stay away is my advice. After reading all the reviews I decided to visit. There were a number of issues and I would not recommend this place to anyone. Firstly I was booked for 2 weeks but the day after I arrived I had to cut my stay short and told them immediately that I could only stay 1 week. They charged me the full two weeks accommodation!. Also, my doctor had very limited English (not good when 80% of their guests are English speaking). I told her I was allergic to alcohol and she proceeded to give me medicine with alcohol in. Also despite my notes clearly stating I was vegetarian (strict for 45 years) I was given food with beef on top. I felt there was a real desire to push unnecessary treatments and meds (when I asked the doctor what the plethora of meds she was randomly prescribing me would cost - she just looked at me and grinned but didn’t answer) and lost trust in them after giving me alcohol and meat. I wrote with feedback afterwards and they didn’t bother to reply. In these days of so much wellness choice, they need to do better. Overall I have come home feeling ripped off massively, my trust abused and nothing but a patronising apology from the very arrogant manager. I made a proposal of a partial refund (at least of the nights I didn’t stay) but they arrogantly just ignored me completely. I will get my lawyer on it but please save yourself the hassle and stay away! I lost my Dad and this was meant to be a positive experience but they are just interested in taking your money at all costs and that’s all. Heartbreaking and what a horrible start to the year! Shame on you Mayr!!

Absolutely fantastic! I had high expectations having come based on referrals, and the whole concept, the facilities and the extremely friendly staff exceeded them. Many guests return over and over.
