How to Explore New Orleans Without the Crowds - AFAR

"I love the Slap Burger hidden in the back of Marie’s in the Marigny — a greasy, hangover‑annihilating burger with American cheese, pickles, chopped onions, and sauce on a brioche bun." - Jenny Adams

I've been wanting to try this place for so long! I really didn't like how dirty the bar was but I digress. You have to walk through Marie's bar to get to the burger place in the back. The staff was super friendly and helpful. I got the heater burger which was delicious and had the perfect kick. The fries are actually really good too. The bar in the front is cash only and they charge $3 for a small cup of cold drink

Very small restaurant but the burger worth trying. Got the double OG burger and french fries Fries is amazing

Google
Always fresh. Staff is always the nicest. Always great flavors. Literally force my husband to come here once a month. The prices are fair, good is delicious and the staff is always ready to help. Definitely worth a stop in. They take cards but if you want a drink from the bar get cash or use the ATM

I stopped halfway through my meal to write this. Skip the gourmet stops and come here. Neighborhood passes the vibe check: friendly, chill, living life unbothered. There are 0 frills in this establishment, and you will miss it if you aren't paying attention. Walk in, turn right, keep going, and order the burgers and fries. Wait for greatness. Food is FRESH and flavorful. This is that just-greasy-enough, well-seasoned burger on a perfect bun with a house sauce that you want to dip your fries in. The menu is limited because the formula is simple and effective. ANY burger is going to be delicious. I had the Western Burger. No complaints. Slap counter takes cards and cash. Bar sells drinks and is cash-only. Come get something to eat.

I found this place in a Google Maps search after a bike tour. But we skipped it that day and then took a bus and ate dinner here the following evening. We arrived and someone had to tell me that I had the right place. It was a bar and even though I read that in reviews, I didn't see any signage for the burger place initially. This was truly a hole in the wall restaurant. It's at the back of the bar in a room that only holds 10 people. We were the only ones there at first, but by the time we finished, we'd seen 2 cops grabbing dinner and nearly 2 dozen locals grabbing takeout. My husband had the 'Big Mac' burger and said it was 6 stars out of 5, so it was that good. I'm pickier and don't like sauce, but my burger with grilled onions was juicy and delicious. I love a good smash burger and this was definitely in my top 3.

Google
Their burgers are absolutely delicious! And my favorite is the fries, they are always fried to perfection 😍 nice and crispy just how I like it. 4 stars because I wish they sold drinks :( I would love to see them add a fountain machine, other than that I’d say this is the best hidden gem burger joint in NOLA❤️

Google
We paid Original Slap Burger a visit while in New Orleans and couldn't have been happier. They're located in the back of Marie's, a local bar with indoor and outdoor seating, so it's perfect to order then grab a beer while you wait. Let me tell you... those burgers are seasoned and cooked to perfection! The OG is a classic with insanely good Slap Sauce. The Heater was a great burger too, but it definitely brought THE HEAT. Spicy and delicious! I wish I had a Slap Burger back in Austin because I would be a regular.

Google
Easily one of the top 3 burgers I’ve ever had. Lucked up and found the place when I was staying overnight in the Marigny area. Fries were really good as well. Definitely worth a stop while in New Orleans.

Yelp
The smash burgers here are full of homestyle greasy goodness and the fries have the perfect crunch and they give you an ample amount.... this spot is so good we will definitely make this a regular stop anytime we are in New Orleans. The bar they are attached too is a great hole I the wall neighborhood bar with cheap drinks! Make sure you bring cash :)

Yelp
Original Slap Burger is in the very back of Marie's Bar. A little hard to find and they do take cards, despite the bar only taking cash. Staff were friendly and the turnover was quick. Seating is a bit tight, but there seemed to be a lot of takeout orders. I got the vegan version of a Big Mack and it was really good until I got to the middle of it. It was very heavily salted in the middle. Hoping it was a fluke. Otherwise everything was great!

Yelp
Veggie burger slaps hard. It's bussin bussin. The cooks were busy back there and they handled their business on the grill.

Yelp
We came here based on a recommendation from a fellow Yelp Elite! Smash burgers has become a favorite comfort food in New Orleans! And I have frequent cravings for it, so when we were told of the Original Slap Burger we had to try it! The Original Slap Burger is located inside of Marie's Bar and Kitchen in the Marigny. You have to walk through the bar to get there, but it is in it's own separate space. The space itself isn't too large and had limited seating. The vibe is super cute with lots of art on the wall. But fortunately we were there when it opened and got a good spot to enjoy our food. Food can be ordered at the window and then when your food is ready they'll call your name to get it. I got the OG Slap Burger and a side of fries. The burger and fries had a more premium look to them which also added to the taste! Both were good and I would definitely eat again. Definitely worth trying if you're in New Orleans! Service: You order at the window. The staff was super friendly and took the time with each order. Drinks: Full bar at Marie's Bar and Kitchen! Parking: Street parking.

Yelp
I completely forgot to review this spot but as I was thinking about smash burgers I've had this year (and I'm from the east coast so I've had 7th street burger, Gotham etc.) I still think about this burger. Everything was perfect! The burgers were thin but massive, the cheese perfectly ooey gooey, the charred onions on top my goodness. The staff was quick with their service and everything was cooked fresh! Interesting tiny hole in the wall back of a dive far but if you find your way it's amazing. You won't regret it!

Yelp
The bread (brioche), the patties, the grilled onions, the sauces... hands down the best smash burger in New Orleans. Gotta go double patty, and the heater (topped with jalapeños) and OG are phenomenal. If you're really hungry, the quad will put you 4 patties deep. The delicious brioche bun and chopped, grilled onions put these burgers ahead of competitors. The fries are perfectly crisp with a tender and satisfying interior. They remind me of Belgian frites. Seating outside is for all and offers beautiful views of its bywater/Marigny/st roch neighborhood; kids are prohibited from entering the building because of gaming devices. However, they will take orders outside if needed! Also - for drinks the bar is cash only. Neighbors are always present, enjoying a drink and a meal.

Yelp
Came on a Sunday around 6PM. There was a bit of a line but it went fast. Waiting for the burger was less than 10 minutes after ordering. When we came to pick our order up, they let the next person in line know that they only had 7 patties left. It was only 630 and they close at 9! I ordered a single OG ($10), added jalapeños, and a side of heat sauce ($1) and a double heater ($14) for my dude. The patties were smashed well and had good flavor. I got the heat sauce on the side in case I didn't like the slap sauce. The heat sauce was much better for me since I enjoy spicier food, but it wasn't super spicy. Was good. Would return.

Yelp
Was in the mood for a burger and we were driving around the upper 9th ward and this place came to mind. This place is inside of a bar you go to the back of the bar and order from a window. The young men are nice, quick and on point. While cranking these burgers out. Did i say how cute this bar is. It's a neighborhood spot and we had the pleasure of having a few drinks and laughs with Donald our bartender. I really enjoyed this Nola experience...

Yelp
I went with my sister after a recommendation from a Yelp Elite member. The burger was said to be on par if not better than Bub's, so I came in with fairly high expectation. I had the heater and was definitely not disappointed. I really enjoyed the tangy flavor of the sauce and the meat was quite tasty. I would recommend a double though, as I wanted more meat. If you like Bub's, I think you'll enjoy this as well. The fries were good fresh, but nothing I would go out of my way for. The service was fast and friendly and we got to see everything made fresh! Ambiance was like a regular bar. The restaurant was in the back, but there were signs that led us in without issue. They also had cool decorations and a festive scary movie playing!
google avatar

Janira W.

Yelp
The slap burger was good but seemed a bit salty. The service was fast and friendly. The ambience was cool because it is part of a bar. Good place to grab a burger from.
google avatar

Jay C.

Yelp
Good food good service. Foot is made to order and right in front of you. It's behind a bar and the establishment is clean and friendly. The cooks are welcoming also.

Yelp
Burger joint tucked away in dive bar. The burger is good representation of a smash burger vs. the traditional style. Added bonus is you can order a drink while you wait for your burger. They make it to order, so it'll be piping hot and charred perfectly. Best to eat right away to take full advantage of all the flavors.
google avatar

Yelp
This place was a great find in Bywater during our trip to the Super Bowl visit in New Orleans. I just loved the "hole in the wall vibe" as we had to go through a bar to order. The burgers were incredible, thin/crispy edges, melted cheese, great sauce, soft and buttery bun. The fries were crisply on the outside and soft on the inside. I would highly recommend the Original Slap burger if you need a cure to your burger craving.
google avatar

Tanzel S.

Yelp
This is the best Burgers in New Orleans I've had so far. From the first bite to my last bite it was amazing! No condmients needed get it just as is, if you haven't tried it please do so. I promise you won't be disappointed. Oh and also grab a drink at the bar while you wait. It's located in the back of a dive bar called Marie's Bar, looks like a cool neighborhood bar that all the locals hang at. So Slap burger is number 1 to me until I find better!
google avatar

Gabrielle W.

Yelp
The Original Slap Burger is located in the back of a dive bar, "Marie's Bar & Kitchen." All burgers and fries are made to order by a small team in the kitchen. Grab a drink while you wait or watch some tv for 15-30 minutes. Super nice staff, very chill vibe, and amazing burgers. Be patient with them :) also they offer an allergens list on their wall before you order. If you're taking to go, get your sauce of the side so the burger and bread stays fresh til you get to your destination! We came at 6:20 pm on a Sunday and it was packed with 6-10 people eating burgers outside & also full inside before we ordered. We waited for about 35 minutes for our order of 2 burgers & fries. -- The Burger SLAPS. go. worth the wait. 10/10. They'll be seeing us again. Definitely worth the wait. Burger thoughts: 1) i love smash style burgers- thin meat patties 2) the seasoning slapped 3) great brioche bun, warmed, slightly toasted 4) awesome speciality sauce 5) grilled onions made to perfect crunch 6) cheese fully melted = Amazing Burger.

Yelp
My fiancé had the double burger and really enjoyed it--he gave it a solid 4 out of 5. I went with the vegan burger, but it was a bit too salty for my taste, so I'd probably skip it next time. Overall, chill vibes.
google avatar

Yelp
We walked over after a boozy night on Frenchman Street. We ordered one burger to split and after one bite I told my honey to go order another one. I declared it the best burger of my life. The next day I was reminiscing about how good the burger was and he told me I needed to try it sober before I added it to the top five of the best things I ever ate. So we hopped in an Uber and made our way back over before the debauchery began. You guys, it was STILL the best burger I ever had. Thin patties, crispy edges, soft bun and that slap sauce. SO GOOD! The fries were crispy and delicious. The entire meal was perfection. Kids aren't allowed and the sauce will make the burger soggy if you get it for carry-out, so plan accordingly. Not much seating in the bar, but I would happily sit on the curb and eat that bad boy. And I hope to do so soon!

Yelp
Well if you want fine dining than stay away, if you want a beer and a good burger with some down home neighborhood atmosphere than you will be a happy person. No complaints here

Yelp
Bomb!!! Very Legit burgers, great for a late night burger. Just go easy on the salt.
google avatar

Yelp
10 out of 10! This is a burger that should be on any burger lovers list. It's not the most convenient in terms of pick up or quick eats. But if you've got some time and are in the area, totally worth a stop. Burgers are well seasoned and delicious. These can be as spicy as you want them so be careful. Love the owner, he's super enthusiastic and cares about his burger service. It's located in a typical neighborhood "dive" bar, so if you can stay for a beer or soda, all the better. Great spot and delicious food!
google avatar

Justina L.

Yelp
This place is a great hole in the wall in the back of a bar. This smash burger was tasty. Simple menu, great prices. The crew was really nice. I got there a couple mins before close and they still took my order. If you are craving a burger come check this place out.
google avatar

Yumi H.

Yelp
Loved the smash burgers! Juicy and the sauce was immaculate. The service was decent. We waited about 20 mins for them. It's also located in a bar, too! The best combo: burgers and beer! It can't get ANY better than that!
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
The music, the drink, the BURGER!! We're all so delish. Certainly gave new meaning to meat sweats
google avatar

Yelp
We visited Original Slap Burger on a weekend trip to New Orleans and I have to say this was one of the best burgers I have ever had! The kitchen is located in the back of Marie's, a dive bar located in the Marigny neighborhood. A short drive from the quarter but seems like a different place entirely, quiet and slow moving. Customer service was fantastic, and the vibes were immaculate, put your order in at the counter and go back up to the bar and grab a drink. Now the main attraction the burger, perfectly seasoned, not paper thin smashed burger. Fresh bun, fresh ingredients and a great sauce. Simple but done perfectly. Fries were crispy and seasoned well also. This will forever be a stop anytime we go to New Orleans in the future.

Yelp
Unfortunately, my pictures are too dark and blurry to share. Probably because I was eating my burger so hard that my hand was shaking my camera! However, I ordered the double patty Mack, my wife had the single patty Mack, and my in-laws split an OG. Folks, folks. FOLKS!!! These burgers were exceptional from the first to last bite. There was COMPLETE silence until each of us finished our burger. Seating is available in the bar area of Marie's Bar, which is cool for ordering drinks, people watching and shooting pool to burn some calories from the HUGE burgers. We were able to watch the cooks on the flat iron cooking our burgers. They were friendly and cooked everything to perfection. Our burgers were served at the pick-up window and were piping hot. I make sure to visit The Original Slap Burger often, and it NEVER disappoints.

Juice B.

Yelp
The customer service here is HORRIBLE... so watch your food .. the person who takes your order is cool with the person who fixes your food ... I've been here 10 + times ... never had this type of treatment ... as of 7/19 .. 10:15pm ... I'm not coming back ... I recommend, if your cashier is a blk guy with tattoos and a hat ...NASTY PERSON ... (I'm blk) And then an assistant ...came to try and buy shots !!! ... Food has always been good ...
google avatar

Immanuel L.

Yelp
I came here to try their burgers and I really loved their slap sauce, specifically the version on The heater. I love spicy food and even though it wasn't crazy spicy it was a good spicy that had good flavor, or should i say that flavor slaps lol . I did like the patties as they were not greasy and pretty well seasoned. I wish they could be thicker maybe 1/3 pound since they are so thin and wide in diameter at least for the price. If you are hungry double patty all the way. The serving size for fries is good, they should have the slap sauce for sale or come with the fries. As far as the ambiance, it's a bar there's not much to it, but the people there are nice. The service was right on time. Which was great and they are super nice. I will say I might come back for the quad patty challenge and get on the wall.
google avatar

Dan S.

Yelp
If you're a dirty burger slut this is your place. It's in the name, it slaps. Bring cash for the bar. If I lived here I would be here 5 nights a week.
google avatar

Cesar R.

Yelp
NEWS ALERT!!! We got a new burger joint that will slap you in the face with flavor! Located inside the Marie's Bar in the Marigny Original Slap Burger is slaying taste buds with their delicious burgers. I went in after seeing one of their mouthed watering Instagram post about it's Large Mack. Here are my thoughts! The secret sauce is light, refreshing and full of flavor. Patties are fatty but not greasy and seasoned well. The bread is good and the pickles add texture and a bit of sourness tot eh bite. When you put it all together you got one hell of a burger. The fries are good but to be honest nothing to write home about hence the fours stars instead of five. For you vegetarians and vegans they got you covered as well. 10/10 recommend
google avatar

Sai V.

Yelp
Burgers were great! Ordered to go because our kids couldn't dine in since it was inside a bar...lost a star not family friendly joint and didn't expect it to but would have preferred to dine in to have the full experience with the burgers fresh off the griddles husband got the 4x4 which he easily devoured and liked the flavors. He got the Heat Burger. I got grilled cheese and it wasn't good. Fries were ok. Mozzarella sticks were like any other. Burgers were moist and we enjoyed them
google avatar

Sean J.

Yelp
We came to New Orleans for the Cajun & Creole food and this was probably the best spot we tried . Absolutely incredible burgers, maybe the best we've ever had.

Shannon P.

Yelp
Interesting place but in a slightly sketchy area. They had a basket of condoms next to the water dispenser! Burger was ok but a little over cooked. The outside tables seem to be a neighborhood meeting place for the local folks which was nice
google avatar

Monte' J.

Yelp
Interesting location did you get the OG burger? It was a five out of five should've gotten the double the slap sauce is definitely the go to, I had to order to go. There is a to go charge of about 10% that with the tip it'll set you back a little bit, the fries were 2/5 two out of five after 10 minutes. They were 3/5 three out of five while they were still warm. would I go back. I definitely would go back for the burger. I'd like to try all three of the burgers as a double I wouldn't get the fries again unless I was sitting down to eat.
google avatar

Melanie M.

Yelp
The shop is in the back of the bar. A real hole in the wall - no frills here. That said, this is the best burger I've had in New Orleans and maybe ever. It's just everything a burger should be.
google avatar

Mike O.

Yelp
Nice spot out of the way to grab an amazing burger. Burgers with a side are bit pricey but well worth it. Everyone in our group loved it. Service was quick. We grabbed a drink at the bar attached to the kitchen while we waited.
google avatar

Jay S.

Yelp
The original slap burger was excellent. The flavor itself was 5 star. The price point was too high in my opinion. It ran me $18 for a burger and fries. I left hungry. Great place if you've got an extra $20 to burn.
google avatar

Tomas H.

Yelp
Great burger with juicy meat and fresh toppings!! Bun was slightly too soft for my taste but overall a solid and satisfying meal.
google avatar

Kelly A.

Yelp
Omg omg, it's worth the hype. All of it! If you want just a good, hearty smash burger, make the drive and come here. It's tucked away in the back of the bar...you simply put your order in at the window and wait for it to come out. Whichever variation of the burger you get, I highly recommend including grilled onions and the Mac sauce..thank me later. I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Rayanne C.

Yelp
Hidden gem. It's on the back side of a bar which made me nervous because I had my nieces with me. But it wasn't an issue. We were able to all in through the side door and right into the restaurant. The burgers a messy delicious bite of heaven! It taste like a local flavorful bigger White Castle burger, lol. That's all I could liken it to but that also feels like an insult because it's so much better. The service is also awesome. The guy was patient and detailed especially with the kids. The place is small but has room for probably 2-3 small groups to dine. We had 4 in our party and sat and dined with no issues. Liked it so much went twice on my trip
google avatar

Jaime T.

Yelp
There was a line upon arrival. Some people eventually got tired of the wait. It took us less than 10 mins to order. Was told it was a 30 minute wait. It ended up being just over 50 minutes. We had two og slap burgers, one heater, mozzarella sticks, and a side of fries. Everyone waiting was pretty chill and understood it would take a while. Some people went to wait it out at the bar but not money because it was cash only.
google avatar

Theresa K.

Yelp
A friend posted the slap burger to their instagram story, and I knew I had to have it. I wanted to go on Sunday, but their food was sold out. Once I was done with work I headed straight there, didn't want them to sell out. Slap burger is in the back area of Marie's Bar and Kitchen. The staff was friendly. I placed a to go order of The Heater with no jalapeños, and fries. As soon as I got home I washed my hands and got to it. I did have to wait a little bit, but that's because everything is made to order. Which I love! The heat sauce was the perfect amount of spice and biting into the burger the bread was so soft. This burger did not disappoint at all!!!! Happy that I don't live close because I would probably buy this burger everyday. Definitely a must try!!
google avatar

Katie F.

Yelp
The burger was absolutely delicious! We went there twice while on vacation - it was THAT good!
google avatar

Chris J.

Yelp
This place is off to the side inside of a small bar. Marie's. Go. Just go. And get a Slap Burger. It's what us New Englander's call a smash burger. Fries were great.
google avatar

Christopher W.

Yelp
Stopped into Slapburger with some friends after hearing how great the burgers were. I must admit thats one of the best burgers I ever had. I had the og while my friends had the spicy burger. I cant wait to go back and try the Mac.
google avatar

Courtney G.

Yelp
Slap burger definitely slapped! Didn't take pics we dug in too fast, mac burger and heat burger 10/10!

Travis J.

Yelp
Highly recommend this place if you are looking for a good burger. This is easily one of the best burgers I've ever had.
google avatar

Nicole Caridad R.

Yelp
This place slaps the suave is soooo good and the smash burgers are 10/10. Great late night bite.
