"New" Church for a 1,000-Year-Old Pueblo One of the iconic sights of the American Southwest, Taos Pueblo has been inhabited for at least a thousand years. The adobe architecture seems to spring, organic, from the earth at the foot of Taos Mountain. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site, but a living community, not a museum. San Geronimo church, at the center of the pueblo, is a relative newcomer here--built in the mid-19th century to replace the Spanish mission that was destroyed in 1847, when U.S. troops bombarded it as part of a campaign to quell a rebellion. Its history has been turbulent, but the setting is beautiful, and Taos Pueblo welcomes respectful visitors today. Before exploring on your own, take the time to listen to one of its college-student docents on a brief guided walk. They'll be telling you about their families..."
This place was an experience to visit, the people take very much pride in their land, homes, and work! Its unbelievable the amount of history here. We entered the church there and the silence was something you could feel. After sitting in there for a minute i had extreme feelings. Its a very spiritual place. There are many shops there to but hand made goods but be sure to bring cash, only a couple shops offer card readers. Also be sure to be there before 5pm as they close the gate to their village, which i don't blame them.. another warning be sure to check the weather, the day we visited it was beautiful 70 out side. Next day we left and they got snow. The drive there was absolutely beautiful through the mountains i didnt take many pictures here, i felt bad doing it. I got to talk with some of the people who lived there. Id go back again and again..

This is a very significant ruin for the Pueblo people, and the site of a major tragedy. It's both beautiful and emotional to behold. This ruin can only be accessed from inside the Taos Pueblo, which requires a $25 entrance fee for visitors. The grounds of the church ruins and the cemetery itself are strictly off-limits; you cannot enter the low adobe walls that delineate the cemetery outside the church ruins.
