Original Trading Post

Buyer beware! The sales people are liars and cheats. I was interested in the beautiful blankets toward the back. A sales woman came up to me and took the blanket from my hands and asked if I wanted help. She then told me how the blankets are 50% wool 50 % acrylic. I asked if they were machine washable and she said no dry clean only. She hovered near me the whole time while I was trying to decide on the pattern. When I picked one out she took it and brought it to the front to ring me up and another sales person told me how amazing the blankets were. When she told me the price I was shocked but was ready to get out of there. They didn’t show me a price tag or anything and didn’t give me a receipt. When I got it home I fully inspected it and found a tag saying it was 70% acrylic and 30% wool! And machine washable?! The blanket is beautiful but I way overpaid and was coerced. I’ve called and left a message but no one has picked up or returned my phone call.

The staff is overly paranoid and indiscreetly follow you around like they suspect you of shoplifting and want you to know it. It's a terrible customer experience. I saw two other reviews below that sound like they had similar encounters. There are plenty of other shops in the area that sell similar items. I recommend going to one where they appreciate their customers instead of treating them like suspected thiefs.

This building is so unique and has a beautiful little store with artworks inside. Local tradition says 1603 was the year The Original Trading Post began out of a tent on this site. In business for 400 years, the post with the Spanish ox cart on the roof has always been a landmark on San Francisco Street leading to the Santa Fe Plaza.

This trading post offered a lot of unique gifts and souvenirs. They offer many New Mexican styled gifts like green or red Chile, or chimena wood burners.

Due to the location the shop is primarily aimed at tourists but there's a range of options for them to choose from. Personally I bought a t-shirt primarily because it was an unusual colour, not something I needed to travel to Santa Fe for but there you go. It appears to be good quality so I don't mind paying a bit of a premium for it and of course it will remind me of my trip.

I grew up in a tourist town. Lived in tourist towns. Nothing "original" about the Trading Post merchandise as any tourist can tell you that China, India and Mexico just pump the "original" trinkets out and that's just the way it is. Original Trading Post gets 2 stars because they had a lot of stuff and the staff was pleasant.

Ok do you need souvenirs? How about authentic Native American or Mexican wares you need to stop here. Authentic Native America jewelry comes its a certificate of authenticity. In a world of knock-offs this guarantees you're getting the real thing. There is enough of a selection to find something! Set up in a building built in the late 1800 It's packed floor to ceiling with a huge selection. There was a great selection of jewelry, clothings, souvenirs, blankets, inlaid knives - including a titanium one with a number of inlaid stones and an equally beautiful set of turquoise inlaid steak knives. One nice thing about this store is it's been in business for over 50 years and doesn't have "everything 50% off today". Prices are appropriately priced - a refreshing change. Our purchase today was small, but gave us more than a few Christmas ideas.

Great shop to grab some Santa Fe souvenirs. Mr & I stocked up on chile spice mixes as we couldn't get enough of the spicy foods we enjoyed Also had a hat the Mr totally loved but it was alas, too large Tons of clothing, pottery, turquoise jewelry of all kinds & fancy-stone-handle knives. It's impossible to walk away without a little something or three!

Excellent spot to buy some souvenirs ,pottery ,jewelry and a host of other items . We were in the restaurant across the street and ventured here on a whim and left with a bag full of goodies . The plethora of items on display is not only handmade but also sourced from local tribes and regions in the state. The lady who was helping us was extremely knowledgeable and showed us different kinds of artifacts and how to differentiate between the different pottery styles based on styles of paintings . The pottery section was my favorite and I had a hard time picking just one but settled for a beautiful vase , which they double wrapped as I was worried it might end up breaking during my transit . The jewellery section is also huge and needless to say I got some stuff there too. We also purchased small souvenirs and knick-knacks and I feel most stuff was very genuinely priced. The store is huge and hence you get lots of variety and space to browse . The staff is friendly and knowledgeable , though I did feel that they were overbearing at times as I did not get a moment to browse by myself without someone checking up on me every few minutes.

Such nice people! So helpful! I loved the music that was playing! Made me want to shop, linger and enjoy the atmosphere.

This store definitely has the space to accommodate a variety of souvenirs (which ranges from T-shirts, key chains, shot glasses, etc) to expertly designed pottery (from gigantic ones you can put in your garden and teeny ones you can put on your bookshelf). They also have Western-style suede and leather jackets, long skirts and belts. I saw a dark brown leather belt with turquoise and metal adornment on it for $89. Also, one side of the store is devoted entirely to selling jewelry. Yes, lots of it with turquoise in it. I came here for the post cards. 6 for $1, or 20 cents each. My cousin bought 6, and with 3 postcards in my hand, I went to the cashier, and she didn't even bother to ring me up. "it's free, hon; if you want, you can split the cost with her" (pointing to my cousin) WOW. I know it's only a total of 60 cents, but I didn't think there was anything FREE in this world anymore. YAY for Free stuff!

Super helpful and friendly staff! We actually ended up getting a whole bunch of info on the different kinds of pottery that the shop sells and the tribes they buy from.

This is an amazing jewlery store. Almost everything is native made. I found everything I was looking for. My assistant, Victoria was funny and really helpful. She gave us great suggestions about styles. She explained everything well including knowing the tribes that the pieces were made by. I loved the place and had a great experiance. The locatin is great. Right in Santa Fe. Amazing!

EXCELLENT store. One of the best for souveniors/indian pottery in Santa Fe. Located right in the plaza. I was HIGHLY impressed with the friendly staff here, who were so willing to help and explain to me information about the pottery and jewelery I was interested in. Caren and the owner/supervisor (I can't remember her name!) were so helpful and nice. I loved that all of the pottery and jewelry was absolutely authentic (they even provide certification). The store really had every type of souvenior you could ask for. Great things for kids. I purchased artist pottery and real turqoise earrings for 60% off the asking price. This is the BEST store and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Santa Fe!

Probably the best store in Santa Fe. They have a little bit of everything: Native American pottery and jewelry, ladies and men's clothing, lots of little souvenirs, and curiosities. The best part is the staff though. Nicest people in the world. I love Maryann (though she no longer works there), Pam, Matt, Joey, and Joanie. So easy to deal with and shop. Special discounts for locals, I love this store!!

We visited Santa Fe in October and they were really great to deal with. I got a lot of gifts taken care of there. I also bought a beautiful bag for myself. I loved it and every time I wore it received many compliments. Unfortunately, it started tearing 6 weeks later. I called and they refunded the entire amount of the purchase. They were fabulous to deal with. I am bummed about the purse but I'm going to use the refund to see if a leather repair shop can save it.

Be careful of how store employees charge you for your items. Bought two sets of earrings that should have been less then $30.00 combined with tax but they over charged for $46.00. The jewelry is nice and set at a good deal, just be careful when it comes to purchase price.

The BEST store in Santa Fe for Southwestern style ladies clothing. HUGE selection and prices are not STUPID tourist prices. Staff is top notch with helping find the perfect outfit. I live in Albuquerque but travel to the Original Trading Post in S.F. for my S.W. outfits. Maryann, Karen and Janice are the best!

The best store in Downtown Santa Fe. They have everything: jewelry, pottery, a huge selection on women's clothing, toys, curiosities, stuff for the home, gifts, etc. The staff is by far the nicest you'll find. The manager gave us an extra $20 off our purchase of a couple of skirts and a belt. I love this store and i will def come back here!
