I've been pretty unimpressed with the selection of hotels in Rio, most are very dated and not worth the high price point, and those that are super nice, are well out of the budget. Hoping I'd find a nice balance of chic and ~$200/night, I fell upon Orla. After all, it's located right on Avenida Atlantica (which is oceanfront) and it's close to the Copacabana Fort (which also means it's within walking distance of Ipanema).
Sadly, I did not dig my temporary digs.
The Orla hotel is part of the class of amazingly located but poorly dated/designed retro hotels. My superior room seemed anything but, although I guess that's all relative. I opened the window to find the view of another building encroaching upon my modest room. The bathroom had Days Inn-type toiletries and the bed was rigid with rough sheets. The wi-fi also didn't work very well from my room. On the plus, the hotel staff was very cordial and helpful, the breakfast buffet looked nice and the rooftop pool is a perk in the warmer months.
While I won't likely stay here again, it's worth it if you're balling on a budget and happen to score a good deal. Also, if you're not going to stay in the room a lot, the location is great.
