Winter Park, Florida Is a Charming Small City Near Orlando — How to Visit

"A smaller and far less crowded alternative to the main airport, Sanford is also only about a half-hour drive to Winter Park and can be a convenient option for some travelers." - Karen Cicero

Google
Lots of close parking both in garage and long term. The long term parking is an easy walk to the terminal. Security is professional and good, bathrooms are great, and they have WATER FOUNTAINS unlike other small airports in the area. Love it!

Google
The air traffic controllers and staff are the best part about this wonderful airport. I understand things get hectic frequently and people can get aggravated, but we’re all human. Even I’ve made plenty of mistakes. Besides, Sanford International is an extremely busy airport. Credit is definitely due, and I respect their work and they are very attentive to your safety. I already miss flying out of there. I sincerely hope all the controllers and staff get a pay raise for their hard work.

Google
This airport is small with not very much traffic so it is unlikely for your flight to be delayed. Plus there isn’t that many people around in the gate areas so it doesn’t feel crowded, but one thing I do not like is the lack of food options and how it says it’s Orlando Sanford airport when it isn’t very close to Orlando. Otherwise if you’re looking for an airport in the Orlando area that isn’t busy and you like allegiant this is the airport for you!

Google
10 out of 5 stars for this airport - my buddies and I fully missed our flight in 2023 (our whole rowing team made it on the plane) and staff re-opened the doors for us while the jet was being refueled or something. Came in super clutched and saved us from a ton of trouble from our coaches haha

Renée B

Google
No pet relief area inside the terminal. It's 2025. People are traveling with pets more than ever. Our flight was delayed. I had to exit the entire terminal and come back through security which was a bit disorganized. Beyond inconvenient. Seating chairs are old. No cup holders but the floor. No charging outlets at the seats. Its convenient because it's small but it is definitely not modern and up to date. Limited food choices. A wrap is $18. A drink $5. A smoothie $10. Think I'll buck the traffic at MCO next time!

Arianne M.

Google
SFB is usually a simple airport to maneuver. This time at Christmas, we had a difficult time finding parking and staff worker named Louise Kelly headed home from her shift went out of her way to help us find parking. People like her is what makes traveling so much more pleasurable. Thank you Louise

Google
This airport honestly exceeding my expectations. It was really hassle free. They had great food options, like ZAZA as well as healthier food options like Natures Table. The airport was clean. The best part was the kids area that had cushioned flooring as well as animal statues that were cushioned for kids to climb - and near the kids area they have chairs for parents and chargers. Great experience that makes me want to utilize the airport more in the future

Reagan E.

Google
Eh. Fine as fair as airports go. My primary beef was that they have near to no chain restaurants. AND I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE THINKING: "Ugh, Reagan, who comes to complain about there being no chain restaurants in an airport." ME! ME! When the alternatives are being stuck here with only the crappiest, smallest, poor attempts at dining. It's a small beef, but one I feel like could easily be solved with some expected and decent food. The food options are very much "hospital food" options, and that's my being pretty optimistic about it. Because they're a small airport, I felt like there were plenty of seating options, it was pretty clean, and TSA was a quick and easy experience. However, I'll never miss a chance to gripe about people who choose to put random, weird restaurants in a place where people are forced to be. UGH. Now it makes sense why the food is bad. They know it is bad. They need a captive audience to make sales. Sigh.

Yelp
Not a bad airport, we were flying out via Allegiant and it seems like the airline more or less runs the airport. Parking was oddly difficult the day we were there and we had to park far away and walk to the terminal. Normally the parking garage has spaces but not this time. TSA was easy enough, we were flying Allegiant so of course all we had were small carry on backpacks. There were a couple food options at the gates and the food was priced well compared to most airports you visit, I was suppressed. Several shops and other places to get what you need. The boarding process was a little weird with inflows and outflows but we made it on the plane and eventually took off.

Yelp
CHECK SCREEN TO CONFIRM GATE. recommend only because I love allegiant and it's only florida city my city flys to. communication is NOT there and i come here often. gate changes are announced maybe about 45 min apart. signage is horrible. i have attached photo of only signage. screen is constantly moving. no one knows where to go today...come here today to get lots of extra steps in! never any other issues, but these are very important issues that need to be remedied and could be with a simple floor marker easel.

Yelp
Love Sanford, hate the airport. Will definitely use Orlando airport in the future. Disorganized, dirty, and rude TSA. This is the most anti-kid friendly airport and TSA I have ever been through. Took my 2 year old son's water. Wouldn't let him have a drink beforehand. It was less than 3 oz and we even showed them the rules posted on the TSA website. Gates were changed last minute. Multiple bathrooms closed and dirty. Worst airport I have been to in over 10 years.
google avatar

Laquita G.

Yelp
Orlando Sanford Airport is such a nice airport. It is very easy to get in and out of. It is immaculate which is very important. I have flown from this airport many times and it is always spotless. The bathroom especially is always clean. That is definitely important as well. The people that work here are always very helpful and patient with travelers that need extra help physically or with language translation struggles or any questions you might have. The planes are smaller, but I am perfectly fine with that. They charge for choosing your seat, carry ons and check bags. If you are a travel snacker, bring food because they charge ALOT for any food you get! Happy traveling!
google avatar

Stephanie L.

Yelp
This airport is much smaller than the main Orlando Airport, but I love that because it's so easy to navigate. No overwhelming nightmarish long TSA lines. The airport is clean, well ventilated, and stays cool. It has a coffee shop, a restaurant and bar. Cute little shops that have snacks, souvenirs, books, magazines, and more! Again, clean, easy to get through, and nice staff. It's a bit of a drive out of Orlando, but so worth it!
google avatar

Austin S.

Yelp
Nice airport, they are in the process of a remodel so hoping we get more restaurants and bars, I think Allegiant is the only airline that flys out of here, the security is always super quick. They need more seating downstairs though at baggage claim they have a ton of empty spaces but only like 13 seats.
google avatar

Bill M.

Yelp
Small airport but they seem to have it together. However it is good to have TSA Pre! Security is busy! Nice access to parking and some nice places to drink and eat.
google avatar

Quy M.

Yelp
We arrived at this airport for a Global Entry interview. The parking area was about a 5 minute walk from the GE entrance. There were restrooms located near the GE area which also consisted of baggage claim. Quiet and much smaller than the international airport nearby. There's two payment kiosk when exiting the parking area. Not sure if the other one was not working or if it was user error but the person was holding up the line. We merged to the left one -- Scanned our ticket then paid and left with zero issues.

Yelp
this airport is a bit out-of-the-way for us, but we were flying allegiant so this is where we came. Long-term parking had plenty of spots available. We drove around for a while, trying to find a spot as close to the airport as possible, but ended up parking further away where there were multiple open spots in the aisle. With all of the driving around, parking, and walking to the airport I never saw a bus. There were bus stop areas that looked like there should be buses coming around. If you think you might need a bus and someone else can park the car probably drop the person off at the airport then go park. Once inside it's pretty quiet. Minimal lines in regular checkin, no lines in pre-check. There's only one sit down restaurant, a few take away food places, and vending machines. The restaurant workers are a bit sketchy. No itemized receipt. We noticed after a couple rounds of drinks and paying that they charge an automatic 15% gratuity. The airline staff were nice. Our flight was packed.

Yelp
Wow, I just experienced the most amazing airport ever! It was smooth and efficient, and I can't believe it took less than 20 minutes to go from the Lyft drop-off to my gate through TSA at 5am. The airport was bustling with lots of open restaurants and shops, and the airport attendants were incredibly kind and happy-very rare at the Airport especially TSA officers. I wish more airlines flew out of here. What a fantastic way to kick off my trip with my bro.
google avatar

Jared M.

Yelp
Solid 4/5 based on our experience using TSA Precheck and Allegiant. If I were rating this without it (based on when we didn't have that level of TSA) I'd probably go a 3 based on that experience. The updated coffee shop, combined with the burger and cinnabon places that are there make for nice snack spots. Definitely would take this airport over the other local options any day. Definitely a good disney and universal outlet to get back and forth from TN in about 1.2 hours!

Yelp
I won't be back! You profiled and picked out my friend and I for having tattoos and piercings you claimed we flagged your xray machine but we could see our images just like you nothing was there yet you let people go who actually did show things on theirs! You then proceed to gourpe and basically finger us for at least ten mins despite the fact we had barely any clothes on and whatever we claimed to flag you would have found in a matter of mins since our everything was basically showing anyways. You descriminated against my friend and I simply for the way we looked! I will never be back I've been checked before through tsa and not ever was I touched the way your tsa felt the need to do despite my lack of clothing! You profiled us and I will never be back.

Yelp
I purchased this yogurt for 10.69 at the "Sanford market" near gate 12. Yes I said 10.69

Yelp
We've flow out of SFB 4 times now; this time was our last to be sure. Just bad all the way around. 1) Parking; wanted to use the garage to keep the car out of the burning sun all week, but was full and closed. Tried long term parking; full and closed. Went to 'economy' parking; nearly full, had to park out in a grassy field area way out back. Good thing we had plenty of time to make our flight or we'd have missed it. 2) Terminal area by the gates was uncomfortably warm, like the A/C was barely working. Lots of people fanning themselves with whatever they could find. Very few device charging stations. People sitting on the floor around the few support columns that had plugins. 3) Trying to exit the economy lot when we got back; both exit lanes were blocked/held up by vehicles having trouble with the payment stations. Had to wait for someone to come out and get them working again. Overall just a very bad experience. We drove from Melbourne to get a non-stop on Allegiant; we won't be back.

Yelp
If you have an opportunity to visit and at the nfc the Aerospace and Aviation Day. Make it happen. Amazing event. Highly recommend getting there early (right when they open at 9am). If not, be prepared to wait in line. We planned accordingly and got there by 9:15am. Parking was perfect and their volunteers were incredibly nice and friendly. They had a hanger for different organizations and offices which the kids can visit and get free giveaways. They had so many planes you could visit and tour, which was awesome. They had helicopters, passenger planes, army, old planes, fighter planes, and coast guard. It was like touch a truck event. They even let my daughter speak on the intercom on the passenger plane. My daughter had an amazing time we will definitely be back next year. Thank you Sanford Airport for putting on a fantastic event.

Yelp
I recently flew from Sanford Airport to Ashville, NC and had a positive experience overall, earning it a solid 4 stars. The TSA process is remarkably fast, whether you have pre-check or not. I witness many people without pre-check, zip through security checkpoint fairly quickly. One notable advantage is the flexibility in checking in bags. You can check in your bag as late as 45 minutes before your flight's boarding time, which is quite convenient for those who may be running on a tighter schedule. Given its smaller size, I appreciated that there isn't much waiting time involved. Unlike larger airports, you don't need to arrive 2-3 hours before your flight. This makes Sanford Airport a practical choice for those looking to minimize their pre-flight wait. While the airport may not offer an extensive array of amenities or activities, it serves its purpose well, especially for flights to smaller airports across the nation and Canada. If you're looking for a straightforward and efficient travel experience, Sanford Airport is a great option.
google avatar

Alyssa M.

Yelp
I don't even want to write this review because I want to keep this airport a secret!! The TSA workers made the entire place so much better. As many travelers know, going through security is always so stressful because they are constantly yelling to take things out of your bag, rushing you, etc. The security here had me belly laughing at how nice they were. It was awesome! The actual airport itself had one little bar that only sold alcoholic drinks, a little shop with snacks/sodas, and a cheeburger cheeburger for a chicken sandwich or a burger. I personally loved it, but if you are not into small airports with limited options, steer clear of this one. It depends which airline you fly/where you fly from to even be able to come to this airport. But where I live it is worth it. Love it here!
google avatar

Jeremy J.

Yelp
Pretty good airport. This is the smaller of the two airports in Orlando. We flew out here didn't really have any issues or problems. Only thing is it's far away from just about everything so you're going to be waiting a little while longer for your Uber ride and journey to Disney.
google avatar

Jordan C.

Yelp
Other than being a bit outdated and small, this airport is so much easier to travel through than MCO. I also appreciated that everyone was friendly. I didn't have to wait in long lines to get through security and once you get through you are basically at your gate. As a resident, I prefer to fly out of here if and when I can. Sure, there are less options, but it is hard to beat for ease and convenience. Traveling through here with kids is much smoother experience than larger airports.
google avatar

Shelley H.

Yelp
Cell lot should have a portable restroom.....long drive from Orlando to pick up folks whose flight was delayed. A potty would be the ultimate convenience .
google avatar

James B.

Yelp
Want a perfect five...figure out a way to make the online payment system for the parking work seamlessly AND post better signage for the same! The parking system simply stinks! Period!
google avatar

Rob S.

Yelp
Easy to navigate, very helpful staff and is a lot easier to get in and out of than the Orlando airport. Friendly staff and sos not cause any headaches traveling with a large group.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
Orlando Sanford International Airport is a small airport that serves the Orlando, Florida area. It is significantly smaller than the larger airport in Orlando, Florida, but smaller can be better. It is a bit of a hike from the attractions. However, if you are a resident of the Orlando area, this airport can offer a better solution than the hustle and bustle (and longer lines) of the larger airport. All in all, Orlando Sanford International Airport is a great option if you are looking to travel in or out of Orlando and the theme parks are not a primary focus of your travel (or you don't mind a bit of a drive).
google avatar

Molly M.

Yelp
This is a smaller airport than the main one in Orlando, but small is typically easier to find the gate and a lot quicker to get through security. We were running late and got through bag check and TSA in probably 30 minutes. This was our first time taking a flight through this airport, but we didn't have any issue finding where to go or knowing next steps. Seating area was clearly marked forbthe gate. However, we did have trouble with the rental car place around the airport as the signs did not always list all of the companies so the return was a huge hassle and we had to loop back around to get to the return area that wasn't fully labeled. Fyi Alamo is the furthest from the gates so factor in walking time. We took Allegiant there and back which seems to be the main flight company. There was a full bar, a mini snack area beside the seats, and a full gift shop with other snack and drink options. Obviously you pay for convenience so it was pricey (about $4.39 for a coke I think) but you were allowed to bring it on the flight too. No prebought alcohol though, only what was served on flight. They announced the delays, gate changes, and boarding over the loudspeaker with no issue hearing it. It probably should've been a tiny bit louder, but the airport isn't loud in general as it's not that crowded. Baggage claim was also pretty easy to find.
google avatar

Amarah B.

Yelp
I really like this airport, I prefer it over MCO because it's extremely easy to navigate since it's so small. There are always a ton of flight options from Toronto to Sanford (this is where my grandma lives). She prefers to fly into Sanford when she's visiting because it's so easy and not nearly as busy/hectic as MCO! The extra 15 min drive to get here is well worth it!! Highly recommend booking travel through Sanford for a stress free airport experience!
google avatar

Peter M.

Yelp
I really love this smaller of the two Orlando area airports, for a slew of reasons. Let me list them: It is much easier to get to if you are having someone take you or pick you up there. It is not crazy big or crowded like the amusement park Orlando airport. Allegiant is there. The bargain airline has its flaws, but for someone carrying only a personal item, I can check in online and go straight to security for my direct flight to Maine. And if I don't care where I sit or about complimentary snacks or drinks, the flight can be very inexpensive. I have never encountered dismissive or rude personnel at this airport (okay, just four flights as yet, but so far so good). On the slightly down side, they have a very limited number of outlets to charge your devices, and all are just outlets, not the USB types many airports provide. But that is fairly minor. Plus we were told in flight that Allegiant is expanding to many more destinations.
google avatar

Mayte K.

Yelp
Small airport. Easy and fast check in but restaurant food prices are outrageous and the quality of the food was mediocre
google avatar

Sharon N.

Yelp
Small. Clean. Easy to navigate. Love it. Any time I fly to that area in Florida I choose this airport.
google avatar

Sherry H.

Yelp
Nice smaller airport .Easy to get around and friendly workers . Many choices to grab a snack before the flight.
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
I don't know why but this has always been the slowest tsa I've been through & I fly 3-4 times a week allover the country. This small airport is growing yes but why does it take 15-20 minutes to go through the TSA line. I go through major airports and it takes less than 10 minutes @ most to go through but here it's always in slow motion
google avatar

Mark P.

Yelp
I just love the Sanford airport. Whenever I book a flight wherever I'm going if I can fly out of Sanford, I'll do it. So very happy they've been expanding service too, because now I fly out of here more often. Easy breezy check in. Often no wait for early flights. Very small by comparison with MCO though they do have a few offerings for foodie things and small sundry shopping if that's important. Rentals or ubering/lyfting in and out is easy. Convenient cell phone lot too. Overall, my favorite place to fly in and out of.
google avatar

Keith D.

Yelp
You can't in touch with anyone. My wife's family flew in and had a car seat lost, and her disabled sisters wheel chair damaged. Staff instructed them to call the airport and the airline. It's been over 5 hours on hold on one phone, Allegiant has hung up every time we get a hold of someone and begin to explain the situation, and the airport keeps passing us between travel agencies. UPDATE: My in-laws let me know the actual airport management got in touch and helped them resolve the issue. I believe they expedited the communication with Allegiant as well.
google avatar

Angela B.

Yelp
They are sneaky about carryon bag prices...charging me $75 for a carry on bag so I had to pay $160 round trip for a carry on bag. Add that to the out of the way location in Sanford. It took just as long to go thru the pre board and they charge for drinks and harass for credit cards by waving applications in your face. The topper was they made us sit for almost an hour before we could get off the plane because it was raining. Never again!!!
google avatar

Lana E.

Yelp
5 stars for an airport so convenient and close to me! I love that I, personally, did not need to get on the interstate or any toll road to get there. Catching an Allegiant flight on a Friday afternoon was a breeze. We were going to be away for a few days so we did the long term parking (in a lot, not a garage) which was about $14/day. A spot was easy to find- this was a short walk to the actual airport entrance. Getting through security was a breeze. Unlike other TSA attendants, these individuals did not look like they hated life. They were pleasant, but did their job professionally and thoroughly. Finding the gate was super easy, as this is a "smaller" sized airport. It is clean and well-maintained. I loved seeing a "pod" where nursing mothers could breastfeed in privacy. I would totally recommend anyone and everyone to fly out of this airport.

June B.

Yelp
sorry but never had a worse experience at an airport, the tsa worker we dealt with taking boarding passes today was unbelievable, tsa should fire this employee immediately she was one of the worst human beings I've ever met or seen in my life! She was lucky there was glass between her and my children because the way she treated my family was disgusting and maybe a lot racist! She didn't know what she was doing but put her hand up in our faces and was so out of line it was disgusting! This happened today at about 6:35 ish going to moline. I'm sorry I didn't video her so I could post it! She was a terrible human!
google avatar

G. N.

Yelp
This airport is chaotic, but it is better than traveling through MCO. Allegiant randomly changed their boarding process and had the plane board back to front, while sharing a hallway with two other flights doing the same thing. So not only was everyone confused, no one knew where to go. It just felt highly unorganized.
google avatar

Eric Z.

Yelp
Easy access airport, with easy parking as well. Flights seem to be planned out to not have everyone at the airport at the same time like other smaller airports do to conserve workers.
google avatar

MY V.

Yelp
Great small airport that seems to be expanding where they are building more terminals. I have been flying out of this airport for many years and it is such an quick and easy airport to get through before. Now it is a little bit busy and the TSA lines can be crazy. I usually fly Allegiant Air with their non stop flights! There is a Starbucks near the baggage claim area for those who need their coffee after a flight. Also a few food areas through out the terminals depends which area you are in. Seatings seems to be limited when it is fully packed. You will see passengers sitting on the floors. Parking at the airport for a few days was not too overly expensive. Easy to get to and convenient.
google avatar

Brita R.

Yelp
I used the Orlando Sanford International Airport to fly to and fly out of with a friend on vacation. It was a pretty clean and overall a wellrun airport. I flew Allegiant and was satisfied with boarding times and staff was polite.
google avatar

Christina C.

Yelp
Small airport. Fast and efficient. It is 40 minutes away from MCO. Shuttle is $80. Depending on your crowd I would suggest getting a Lyft for $50
google avatar

Charles M.

Yelp
Sanford International (SFB) is the small town airport located in the big metro area. Advantages over Orlando International (MCO): - Shorter TSA lines - Easy in and out access by car for drop off and pick up - Less expensive extended parking - Lighter traffic compared to Semoran and Beach Line - Smaller airport so shorter distance to everywhere within terminals Challenges when compared to MCO: - Fewer airlines fly in and out - Less central location - it's in the Northern suburbs - Fewer amenities - food, restaurants, charging stations Airline options and preferences will drive how most people decide their airport choice. For me, I'll choose SFB when I can.
google avatar

Marianne H.

Yelp
9:30am on a busy travel day, waiting to pick up a rental car. ONE PERSON BEHIND THE HERTZ COUNTER. THREE people waiting in line. WHY DID IT TAKE TWO HOURS to get this transaction completed!?!?!?! We will Never get a car from this location again.
google avatar

Jeanita O.

Yelp
Boring airport!....There was nothing exciting about this airport. I was ready to leave ASAP!
google avatar

Yelp
Did anyone see my other half in September of 2021 to October of 2021 and April of 2022 to May of 2022? If so please notify me

Nelma P.

Yelp
I make the 2 hour drive from Jacksonville to Orlando Sanford International Airport for low airfares to the Midwest; A $200 to $300 difference at times. I still keep hoping to see improvements at this airport, but as always not much has change. Today for a little over 2 hrs the parking cost me $14.00. Not cheap. The food selection in Terminal B is pretty bad. With one fast food place offering burgers & a short list of sandwiches very basic stuff. For $11.00 I got a grilled chicken breast sandwich & fries. No drink. I was more disappointed than ever. The chicken was ok but the fries were limp & not crispy or brown On the flip side some discount carriers can take you as far as Amsterdam Netherlands. Also with a small airport it's no too intimidating. Their motto is Better Faster & Simple. So if you come to OSIA do not come hungry. And expect to pay the costly parking. The savings on the airline ticket better be worth it. I'm spoiled from my experience at other airports in the US & international. Which is why I really think Sanford needs more amenities to grow. Maybe they don't want to grow. I would rate them a 2 star but with the great discount in airfare I added one star, from 2 to 3. So, I'll back OSIA only if the price is right $$$$.
google avatar

Rod H.

Yelp
I flew out of Sanford for the first time in a few years and they really need efficeincy experts to help them out. Even though this is a small airport, it really seems to be slower than OIA. Thankfully I had TSA pre-check, but it is a slow process there. They seem to have grown, with more airlines, but a few more employees or change the process to be more efficent.
google avatar

Mandi S.

Yelp
Small airport that only has the commercial airline, allegiant, and the rest are private jet companies. We've noticed that even though we have the TSA precheck, it's rarely honored and rarely shows up on our ticket with allegiant when flying this airport. They do have a line for TSA precheck. It's a small airport so you don't have all the craziness of MCO. Less food and beverage options, but less traffic, less people, and easier navigation. I like to fly my family in to this airport when they come to visit because it's real easy and predictable. I will say I had a family member that needed a wheelchair to take her to and from the gate for departure and arrival, and the kid that took her on departure just left her stranded and was frustrated that he had to do this job at all. Treated her poorly. I get if you're not happy about something, but please don't take it out on the client. Work that out with your boss. This was noted at the time of ticket purchase that she would need this service so this shouldn't have been a problem. She was safe, and someone else eventually helped her thanks to a kind Samaritan. But it will definitely have me vetting the person taking the wheelchair next time i have someone that needs it. The facilities are clean and they do a good job about keeping people moving. Staff are typically efficient and friendly. I typically have a really good experience and my guests and family typically have a really good experience at this airport as well.

Debi W.

Yelp
Got here very early for a 6:10 flight. No place for coffee on the side of Gates 6-10. I had to walk to the other side where a place served coffee and hot breakfast sandwiches. Grateful I got here in plenty of time to take the long, but necessary walk. Coffee lovers will understand! I parked in the ticketless long term parking lot at $14 a day. They charge by license tag. Note: if you are checking a bag with Allegiant there is a limit 40#!

Yelp
We flew into Sanford, so I can't comment on the flying out process. I will say flying in was a breeze! Very easy airport to navigate around. Very clean. I did notice a variety of food options in the terminal. About standard for most airports. Navigating out of the airport was a breeze. Very easy to get in and out of with plenty of signage. I would definitely fly in/out of Sanford again
