On the Grid : El Tío Che

"El Tío Che is the sweetest corner in the hood, a reference not only in Barcelona, but nationwide for its traditional homemade sweets and “horchata”. Horchata is a milky beverage made from tigernuts, water and sugar, popularly served in Spain during the summer as refreshment with “fartons” (elongated sweet sponges) made to be dipped in it. What makes this place really special is that it’s an absolute classic that has been serving up sweet joy for over 100 years, which is palpable from the vintage décor that sets it aside from everything else on the street." - Little Buddha

Neighbourhood spotlight: Poblenou, Barcelona - SilverKris

"A longstanding, family-run horchatería that has served horchata for over a century; visitors are encouraged to sample the homemade ice cream and horchata while sitting on its sunny terrace, with the business now in its fourth generation of family ownership." - Ben Holbrook

Great experience here! The passion and love behind the ice cream is clearly evident and the changes of flavors is brilliant, it made us come back to discover more. Every flavor we tried was delicious and they offer samples so you can make sure you get one (or more) that you will love. Highly recommend coming by!

This horchata is delicious, my first time trying this ever. Hard to describe but they will let you taste first if you are unsure. Great service too :)

Google
This horchatería is perhaps the most famous in Barcelona, and with good reason. Both their horchata and their ice cream are finger-licking good. Just look at the lines that form to place orders. A must-stop if you come to Barcelona in the summer (or in any season; it’s always a good time for an ice cream!).

Google
One of the best ice cream I have ever tasted! My family and I love this place, fantastic ice cream and horchata! The staff is nice even when the line is down the street! Highly recommend!!

Google
Pretty unique flavor. We just got a petite drink without sugar to try. EU 2.4 . Also got a homemade nougat to take home with.

The horchata was watery and almost flavorless. Strawberry ice cream was also average.

We’d better checked the Google reviews before trying this Russian roulette on ice cream. Their neighbor Mama Heladeria scores a whopping 5,0 stars. The ice cream of El Tio Che is not the best around town. Next time we’ll check the neighbors for ice cream and will return to El Chip Che for their horchata, hence the reviews. 3 stars for the service and nice terrace at Rambla de Poblenou. Will score extra when we tasted the horchata :-D

Google
This was some of the best ice cream I have ever had. I really liked the flavors, and the prices were very affordable. Great location as well. Definitely come here when you're in Barcelona!

Yelp
I Love the horchata here!! My cousin took us here rain or shine. We were actually checking out a little festival that was happening here. It wasn't so close to my cousin place but worth it. It wasn't raining until we got to this spot. So we pretty much chilled here inside and outside. They have tables outside so you can sit and enjoy your horchata with your farto ( i think it's that's the name). It's delish together. I know it's a weird word farto or farted. But once you dip it in your horchata omg it's orgasmic. The people working here are either young or old but whatever the age is they are super duper friendly. When it was raining so hard and we stayed so long my cousin's boyfriend ask if they can give us something to cover ourselves with. They gave us trash bags and 2 for my daughter so we could cover her good. It was raining so hard and i guess they felt bad for us. But either way they were very polite and friendly. Another must eat in BCN.

Yelp
This has to be one of Barcelona's best orxaterias - in my opinion though, they do have the best orxata! Not overly sweet, smooth and full of flavor. Aside from this famous drink from Valencia they have all sorts of ice-creams, granizados, and good news for those who avoid sugar at all forms - they also have sugar free sweets (including orxata).

Yelp
Tasts artificial. had three different flavors. all where not convincing me. Maybe the orchata is nice. will check next time. Guess the positive reviews are earned ny the tradition of this place

Yelp
We visited here from United States with little skill in Spanish language. The lady who greeted us at the counter was EXTREMELY kind and took a special effort to work with us & ensure our food, and experience, was WONDERFUL! We ate 3 items - waffle with caramel sauce & ice cream (pictured here), Crepe with Ham & Cheese, Ham Sandwich! The waffle & Crepe were our favorites!! We also had fresh squeezed orange juice & a cold coffee drink - both were excellent! Again, the friendly & welcoming atmosphere made this OVER THE TOP!! Highly recommend! I will definitely come here again!!

Yelp
El Tio Che is an institution in Poblenou. Always busy with a friendly, chatty staff, family run since 1912. The Horchata is delicious, my favorite is the mix Horchata with lemon Granizado (Murciana). Ice Cream and coffee are great too, the oven baked potatoes at lunchtime are perfect and during christmas time they have delicous turrones and pralines there. One of the best places in town!!
