8 Delicious, Weird Ice Cream Flavors to Try in Europe - AFAR

"A Barcelona orxateria serves turrón ice cream inspired by turrón de Jijona (a firm almond-paste Christmas candy); the scoop tastes like a rich blend of almond butter and heavy cream and is often presented as a generous serving in a glass dish." - Chris Ciolli

Google
Fresh orxata, perfect for the summer. This shop was recommended by a local, and it was our first time trying orxata. We were told that it tastes somewhat like milkshake, but better. In my opinion, the orxata tasted a bit like coconut milk, and it was not too sweet. I have not tried orxata from other shops, so I cannot give a fair comparison of how good it was, but I would say it is a local drink that is worth a try. The price is fair, only €4.20 for a grand cup.

Wonderful, delicious Orchata. Must go place. Not the most elegant place in Barcelona but the orchata makes up for the lack of refinement of the premises

What a delicious artesanal ice-cream and cool retro vibe. Very clean and attentive service. A MUST to visit plus, this location tends to be less crowded.

Yelp
This place was really good. Definitely get a small (petit), since it will fill you up. Family had a selection of the trufa, straciatella, and dark chocolate/coffee mix. Extremely packed in with a helpful smile by the server. Well done.

Yelp
A local ice cream shop with lots of customers but we weren't impressed. Had a double scoop of mango and coffee ice cream and it wasn't good. Lacked much flavor....don't know what the line was for.

Yelp
Go for the 60's soda fountain ambience. Unfortunately the ice cream tastes like it's out of a box--more artificial than naturally flavored, a bit icy and much like generic ice cream out of a box. Service was indifferent, neither welcoming nor rude. If anything there were more people behind the counter (4-5) than we're probably necessary at the time, it was mostly empty at around 3pm. We didn't speak much Spanish but communication was okay since we could figure out the flavors listed (in Spanish) and tried our best to pronounce them. Dropped by here on a weekday afternoon during a trip to Spain, based on the five Yelp reviews it seemed like a good place to check out. Considering the quality of food I've experienced so far in Spain, this was lacking. Too bad it doesn't warrant another trip back.

Yelp
I can only speak for the horchata which was absolutely amazing-ly delicious! This was so good, I practically finished in one sitting and craved for a second one. I cannot quite pinpoint what distinguishes the horchata here from elsewhere in Barcelona. I've tried horchata from other restaurants and they are all very good. But this place got me craving for a second one! They offer sweetened and non sweetened. The sweetened was way to sweet and I did not want an unsweetened drink. So, I asked for mixed half sweetened and half unsweetened cup! DELICIOUS! This is a local spot and staff speaks limited English which, I did not mind because it speaks for the authenticity of this place. Also, their menu seems to have a variety of different horchata drinks. Unfortunately, I did not have the stomach to try more items from their menu. :(

Yelp
My friend and I were walking around Barcelona and looking for a treat to help us cool down. We saw this place with people coming out with ice cream, so we decided to check it out. To be honest, I'm not exactly sure what I ordered since I don't speak Spanish and had a hard time communicating, but whatever flavors I got were delicious. I also loved their custom wafer on top.

Yelp
Horchateria Sirvent is like being in the Disneyland of horchata I came here twice! Their ice cream shop is connected next door but the horchateria has about 30 different combinations to choose from I got the ice cream horchata (twice) and ice coffee horchata this morning. Seriously please come to Brooklyn!

Yelp
Couldn't leave a Yelp tip so going to leave a review. Came for horchata, limona, and ice cream yesterday (November 26, 2019) and the ladies said that they don't have any of that until the summer. So we decided to try the candies in the display windows. We didn't know what we were doing at that point so the lady recommended a popular marzipan candy. As we went to pay for it, she said we could have it. I think she felt bad that we weren't able to get anything that we wanted. The marzipan was good. They speak some English but not much.

Yelp
What a wonderful place to try some local drinks! This place seems to not attract a lot of tourists- however, in our two trips out to Orxateria Sirvent, there were long lines of locals waiting to get their liter bottles filled with orxata. Drinks were served in sizes varying from a shot glass to two liters. If you're familiar with Mexican orxata- it is usually made with rice milk, spiced with cinnamon. Spanish orxata is a North African import- where it was traditionally made with sweetened and soaked tiger nuts. For reference- rice milk's cereal like flavor is not what tiger nuts taste like- there's a noticeable leguminous taste and aftertaste. Once we got past the "legume milk" feeling however, we found that the local orxata is easy to appreciate, with its very thick and rich feel- it was pleasing and respite from the summer heat. We also had the Llet Merengada and the Granissat Limona. The former is a drink of egg whites, sugar and cinnamon in milk. It has an airy taste despite the coldness of the drink, which are likely due to the beaten egg whites. The sweetness with a hint of cinnamon made it the perfect drink, much lighter than a milkshake but more substantial than plain milk. The Granissat Limona is probably best likened to a slushy. Served with a generous amount of crushed ice, the tart and sweet lemon syrup was the most refreshing drink we could have in the hot summer. Overall, we absolutely loved the drinks here, and would love to visit again, and perhaps try the ice cream served here as well!
