We traveled through Osaka International Airport, also known as Itami, on our way out of Japan. Itami is Kansai's second-largest airport, with fewer flights than Kansai International Airport, and I figured it would be a small, functional regional hub, just a place to pass through on our way to Haneda. Something akin to Burbank, a convenient airport with old carpets and limited amenities.
I was surprised to find a bustling modern airport that looked--and apparently was--freshly renovated. The new and improved Itami reopened in 2020 after its first makeover in 50 years.
Despite having "international" in its name, Itami only offers domestic flights. We were among a small minority of foreign travelers, and it was useful to speak Japanese when we were checking in for our flight and going through security (I'm guessing the airport staff can manage in other languages, but this wasn't like at larger airports, where the employees speak such impeccable English that it would be awkward to insist on Japanese). Service was great, and we zipped through a short security line with a good hour to kill before boarding.
We took advantage of this time, browsing the shops then making a couple of stops for lunch. There was a crowded food court, where I went straight for Takobon, a stand offering delicious takoyaki and ikayaki, as well as cold draft beer. We also got fast, casual, high-quality sushi at Ariso Sushi. Pretty incredible dining options for a regional airport.
I thought Itami would be nice for its location and the easy flight to Haneda, but I didn't actually expect to enjoy this leg of our trip home. The travel experience was seamless and the food was a wonderful parting gift as we left Japan.
