Last year, at the recommendation of Romina – our host at Atmosfere Bed & Breakfast – we stepped for the first time into Osteria alla Ghiacciaia. The experience stayed so vividly in our memory that returning this year felt like the most natural choice, like meeting an old friend you know you can count on: authentic, warm, and always welcoming – Osteria alla Ghiacciaia – tradition, taste, and history in Udine since 1923. The history of the place can be felt in every corner: founded in 1923, the osteria has, over the years, been a cold storage facility, a wine cellar, and a meeting place for irredentists. Today, it preserves that traditional atmosphere that blends perfectly with a passion for gastronomy. Everything here exudes that authentic Friulian charm, where time seems to be measured in glasses of wine and plates full of stories. This time, we once again chose to let the menu guide us — and every dish lived up to the memory. We started with a Piatto estate, a plate that brings summer straight to your table: fine ricotta from alpine pastures, delicately flavored with chives, wrapped in the rich aroma of 20-month-aged prosciutto, with its silky texture and deep taste. Alongside, sweet juicy tomatoes, Salvagno olives, and peppery arugula add freshness, color, and a perfect balance between salty, creamy, and bright. It’s the kind of dish that seems simple at first glance but is so well composed that every bite feels like a summer holiday in Friuli. We paired it beautifully with a serving of anchovies marinated with pink peppercorns – an explosion of freshness and subtlety. The tender fish, carefully marinated to preserve the full flavor of the sea, meets the lightly spicy, floral notes of the pink peppercorns, adding a delightful surprise to every bite. The result is a refined, simple, and elegant appetizer that proves that at Osteria alla Ghiacciaia, even the most delicate flavors are given their own story. Not every dish stays in your memory after a trip, but last year, at Osteria alla Ghiacciaia, the artisanal tagliolini with San Daniele prosciutto and poppy seeds won us over so completely that we couldn’t stop thinking about them. So, returning was inevitable. The pasta, delicate and creamy, homemade to perfection, intertwines with the rich yet subtle flavor of aged prosciutto, while the poppy seeds add that surprising texture that perfectly completes the dish. It’s a recipe that combines Friulian tradition with refinement — a culinary experience so memorable that you crave it again and again. And yes, there were three portions, each one its own little masterpiece! Once again, the house white wine complemented the atmosphere perfectly, rounding out every bite. And the finale… a truly unforgettable indulgence: Torroncino semifreddo al caffè – sweet, cool, and velvety, the kind of dessert that turns dinner into a cherished memory. At Osteria alla Ghiacciaia, food is not just nourishment — it’s a culinary journey into the heart of Friuli, where tradition and flavor intertwine in a simple yet spectacular way. Last year we left impressed; this year we returned convinced that we’ll come back every time our travels lead us through Udine.

We visited this restaurant in Udine and were immediately charmed by the beautiful setting along a small stream – a peaceful and scenic spot for a relaxed meal. The food was fresh and of good quality. The pasta was well-cooked, but the presentation felt a bit plain and the flavors could have used more depth and variety. It lacked the finishing touch that makes a dish memorable. The highlight of our meal was definitely the octopus salad – perfectly tender and full of vibrant, refreshing flavors.

I went to the ghiacciaia last evening to eat dinner. I ordered Cjarsons, a local dish. It was listed in the first plates. When I got it it tasted like cinnamon and very sweet, not at all like Cjarsons I ate at many other restaurants. It also didn’t say it anywhere on the menu, I went there after a 5 hour drive and just wanted a good local dish and all they gave me was Cinnamon with butter in dough and molten cheese on top. When I asked the server about it she got defensive and said I should’ve asked her first and she turned around to other guests and said she couldn’t read my mind and I should’ve asked her in a very disrespectful tone like I couldn’t understand Italian. After that incident we got ignored and treated badly. It was very unprofessional and our server took a simple question very personal. We should normalise asking/telling the staff if something wasn’t good.

The staff was very friendly and was speaking in English. But the food was not that nice unfortunately. Cheese and sweet duo is not for me. Meatballs with tomato, beef and baked pumpkin were nice. And also spritz was small and good.

We have found the worst restaurant in Italy. It is a mystery how it has a rate above 4. Out of 4 dishes we returned 3 as impossible to eat after the first bite. And we were charged fully. Servers berated us for asking why is it so bad. They had no explanation. I politely asked if maybe our dishes were accidentally poorly cooked, and they refused to accept that possibility. Avoid. A complete scam. Italian authorities should close this restaurant for being a disgrace to Italian cuisine, culture, and pride.

What should definitely be highlighted is the atmosphere. With beautiful flowers and a small cozy lagoon, it is a very unique experience. There are fewer dishes on the menu and they tend to be more unique, but in terms of prices, I don't think it's unrealistically expensive. On the plus side, there is a children's menu and the place is very careful about where the ingredients come from. I rarely come across a restaurant that puts such emphasis on this, there is a longer description at the end of the menu of what is sourced from which farm, I think this is what makes it really special, it is VERY AUTHENTIC! I went for the house taglaitoni, sant danielle ham and poppy seeds, it was delicious! They give you a separate bag of breads which is also a plus! It is worth arriving early, because as we have seen, around 7-8 there is already a long queue in front of the place! And thankful thanks for getting a child's sneezer, so we can have a more relaxed dinner! 😄✨

The menu is simple and everything we tried was excellent. They feature local products from the surrounding area. The restaurant itself is very tasteful in decor and they have a beautiful patio overlooking a stream. The service was also great! We look forward to returning soon.

Very tasty food and reasonably priced. Very nice ambient (outdoor). Suggestive place to eat lunch.
