4 Ways to Travel as Vegetarian | Nomadic Matt

"Recommended by our hotel owner in Florence, this restaurant specialized in creative Italian dishes: my husband ate a perfectly cooked steak while I was served a beautiful vegetarian entrée consisting of grilled vegetables and cheese." - Matthew Kepnes

Google
We had a GREAT time here! It was suggested from our hotel and totally worth it. We selected the florence steak and it was really tasty, even though we were not used to the rare-medium rare. The waitress was also wonderful, very polite and accommodating with a smile and she spoke very good English. I totally recommend it and if you go, make yourself a favor to try for tiramisu! It was the best tiramisu we had during our time in Italy.

Stephanie L.

Google
Loved the truffle pasta!! If I were to visit again or live here, I would come back for that alone. Nothing was left in the bowl. Appreciated how they accommodated changing the pasta type for our second dish because we wanted a thinner noodle. Waitress was understanding and helpful in helping us decide what to get. A lot of people were getting steak, it was large and they seemed to be enjoying it.

Google
One of the best and most authentic Italian restaurants in Florence. Incredible meal. Absolutely delicious. Also incredibly attentive and comprehensive choices for Coeliacs. Amazing service. Absolutely delicious. Even the bread! Would definitely recommend and return!

Google
This small restaurant provides for intimate dining with great food. Located just off the main roads, this is a great place to rest your feet and have a relaxing dinner. The staff is great, the food was amazing and the tiramisu is a must have, even if you don’t normally like it. Would highly recommend if you are looking for a place to eat in Florence

Rachel C.

Google
Very delicious and nutty pesto pasta. We also had the Florentine Ribollita.

Federica C.

Google
My friend and I found this place casually. Staff was attentive and kind enough to accommodate my request. Food was amazing! Would definitely be back again!

Lesley

Google
Hands down the best bistecca fiorentina by far. My fiancé is a connoisseur and Italian. This place is the only place I ever want to eat it again! I’m ruined. Also, the staff is friendly and very helpful. Can’t wait to go back.

nicole L.

Google
My mum and I had a great experience dining in this restaurant! It was recommended by a friend who is from Florence. The food portion is generous and cooked deliciously. We were also met by the chef, Emerson whom have been with the restaurant for more than 10+ years. He explained the dishes to its detail and you can truly see its where his passion lies. We wanted to go back to the restaurant but we couldn’t fit it any longer in our itinerary. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Cozy little Place. Service was great very polite. You never know how you are going to be treated if you're from another country. Food was prompt and delicious

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Great food and superbly friendly service. We stopped here after our tour guide recommended it, and it did not disappoint. We ordered a variety of pasta dishes that were all delicious. Plus, they have a huge selection of local wines. Would recommend!

Yelp
One of my last meals in Florence and I am glad I got to end it on a great note! Most places I went to really only offered pasta and carbs and I really craved protein. As we walked near the Duomo we stopped at this cute little restaurant. I feel like everywhere in Florence we didn't need to wait for a table and we were seated as soon as we walked in. The service was nice and they were very efficient. Off the bat, they served some bread and oil. The bread was very crunchy on the outside and very very soft and fluffy on the outside. Soon the food came and I never felt more in heaven. The combination of being in Florence, with great wine, and perfectly cooked meat - what more can a girl wish for. The steak was cooked just to my liking and was very tender! I savored every bite and I don't think I'll ever find another meal as savory as this one. In the pictures, the meal doesn't look like a lot, but let me tell you - I WAS STUFFED! The bread really filled me up in the beginning and the steak was a topping to everything. If I ever get the chance to travel there again, I will definitely be back! Highly recommend - for the prices, quality, and satisfaction!

Yelp
AMAZING! So delicious I came back twice. The truffle pasta was so buttery and rich, truly an amazing dish. The filet with roasted potatoes was so tender and seasoned perfectly. The potatoes were ridiculously good that I ordered them as a side dish the second day. I would recommend this restaurant 100 times over. The owner Andrea was very welcoming along with all of their staff.

Yelp
Very nice people. Wine list is very good and they will help you pick something lovely and regional. Had the warm pâté. Never had it that way before. It was excellent. Also the cheese tray. The truffled honey with the cheese was iconic. Boar pasta was excellent (it has olives in it) and the black truffle cheese pasta was also excellent. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Michael G.

Yelp
Went here on a recommendation from a waiter from a nearby osteria and it did not disappoint. If you want authentic, homemade pasta this is the place to go. Ask for Andrea!

Yelp
Last night in Florence.... Just around the corner from our hotel, my friend loved the minestrone soup she had her first night in town and wanted to return. I was up for a lovely plate of pasta having many salads and steak dishes on this trip. I have to make note of their big steak, which could feed a whole table of Europeans or a couple of corn fed mid-western americans, of which we witnessed both varieties of patrons at tables adjacent to us order and consume. The bread is served in a little brown bag, be sure to ask for a plate for oil. The service was a bit slow, but it is the custom to not rush one out. I'm happy to report, the food was perfectly prepared and delicious! see photos.

Yelp
Waiting time really long, food is good, stuff medium unfriendly. Time for coffee review. Temperature okay, foam not creamy, size good, taste little over brewed, freshness of coffee medium bad, presentation medium, too much acidity, small body. 2/5

Yelp
Walked by here and the outside caught my eye. The waitress inside was friendly so I decided to cancel our existing reservations someplace else and made reservations here. When we go there it was not that busy, we had a very friendly waitress, ordered bottle of wine, appetizers and things were looking really good. Well that was until more people showed up, our waitress left to the back of the restaurant and now we were stuck with another waitress who was NOT happy. The service was so slow, we had to keep asking for water, food, to clear our table and not even once did she come to pour our wine for us. The food was good, but I am a true believer that your experience shoudl be an equal mix of quality food and great service. Given the competition in Florence, one would think that the staff would go above and beyond not only for a better tip but for return clientele. Hence why the 3 stars.

Yelp
Found this place on the recommendation our hotel host. We got there rather early because it was our first night in Florence, and we were pretty tired from limited sleep on the plane. The waitress was not very good at food recommend ions. Basically she just pointed to things on the menu. I had a pasta dish which was spaghetti with meat sauce, which was decent. We also got the truffle pasta, which was excellent. Then we split the wild boar. That meat was a bit dry. They brought out some sliced break in a paper sack. Maybe they bought the bread down the street?

Yelp
3.5 Stars. Translated as red onion, Cipollo Rosa, is an inviting neighborhood restaurant. We came with high hopes as our hotel proprietor recommended this place and even suggested we connect with the manager. When we did, however, it made no difference in the service or menu offerings. We had two pasta dishes and shared one entree. She had the spaghetti with steak sauce and I had the truffle pasta. The spaghetti was good but not great. The truffle pasta was excellent. I love the consistently au dente pasta throughout Italy. For the entree we had the wild boar, which came as stew with cubes of meat. Unfortunately it was a little tough and lacking in flavor. If it was truly wild boar, I can understand it being tough but was surprised to have the blandness (?). Nevertheless we enjoyed a nice dinner looking out on this cozy Florence neighborhood.

Yelp
Solid eats not too far from Duomo! Can't say that service was super excited about us tourists, but they were nice. - Bruschetta "freestyle" is a sample of all 4. 4/5 - Homemade pasta with tomato, olives, and almond 5/5- guys, this is some of the best pasta I've had. It sounds strange perhaps, but it's unbelievably excellent. Try it! - florentine special- 5/5 okay... Had no clue what this was on the menu but got it anyway. It's a bowl of tripe! Flavored wonderfully, but I can't eat an entire bowl of just tripe. Wifi! Credit card ok!

Yelp
On my first day exploring Florence, I stumbled upon this little restaurant near the Piazza del Dumo. Their menu is simple and sounded tasty so I came in to give it a try. Right away, the service is pretty friendly and was helpful in answering my questions despite the minor language barrier. I ordered the Hot Macaroni with Pork Cheek, recommended to me. This dish was overall very tasty and gets spicier as you eat! It starts out mild and grows as you eat it, and its cheese and pork definitely have very strong flavor as well. It does get a little heavy and a bit on the greasy side so beware of that. The best part of the whole meal was the dessert! The Panna Cotta was perfection... heavenly plate of creamy deliciousness. Definitely give this dessert a try if you've already had a lot of Tiramisu throughout your trip!

Yelp
I ordered the tagliolino pasta with black scrozone truffle for dinner one night. I came back the next day and ordered the same dish for lunch. It is a simple, yet delicious dish. I had the chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream for dessert and that was tasty as well. The wine was reasonably priced. We ordered a 0.5 liter of red wine for €8. The restaurant charges a €3 cover per person. The service was friendly but inconsistent. Another couple arrived after us and they were briefed on the daily specials. Our waitress neglected to share the specials with us. We also requested bread and olive oil for the table twice from two different people before we received it 15 minutes later. Similar to other Italian restaurants, we had to flag down the waitress for our bill. It is nice not to feel rushed out of the restaurant as is often the case in the U.S. I would come back here.

Rein C.

Yelp
Service was efficient (though not warm and friendly but we've come to accept that this is the norm in Italy... sigh). But they were out of a few wines. First, their menu says house white and house red so we ask for house white. She brought out red, and we said that we ordered white - then she told us that they only have red! (Not sure if she meant that they only have red that night or they just serve house red) in any case why didn't you advise us when we placed our order rather than not saying anything and bringing out the wrong order? Then we chose some wines by the glass and one of them was not available either. Pasta is fine. The truffled one was nice and the one with almonds and olives was strange

Yelp
I had the perfect pici with tomato and basil here. Great people watching, a busy but shaded street, friendly service and all around great experience.

Yelp
Recommended by my hotel so it was a surprise that it was the worst meal we had in Florence. The server was surly and pretentious, and, even with a near empty restaurant, he insisted we sit alone in the rear next to the service area. OK. Maybe they had reservations for nicer tables, however it was a Sunday night in February. I wanted one of the large, grilled steaks you hear so much about in Florence. The server made a big fuss about the steak the chef picked out just for me; showing it to me before it was cooked, pointing out the bone, etc. Imagine my horror when I tried to eat it and it was so filled with connective tissue I could not chew it let alone swallow it. When I tried to ask my server about this, he suddenly couldn't understand English and brought a togo box. My husband had the wild boar which is braised a long time in tomato sauce. Braising tough meat in an acid like tomato sauce should've made it tender and flavorful but, alas, it was dry and tasteless. Thankfully, not all restaurants served such subpar food. I had a delicious, large, and tender steak at nearby at Trattoria Za Za as well as many other incredible dishes. Everything there was so good, including the wonderful service, that I bought their recipe book!

Yelp
While in Italy, we stayed in Airbnb apts. While there, we only had time for one good sit down dinner, so we asked our local guy what he would recommend if he could only eat one dinner while in Florence. He didn't hesitate when he recommended this place. Going off his recommendation, we came here and ordered the Bistecca alla Fiorentina! IT WAS AMAZING! It was so big that my wife and I shared it and we still weren't able to finish it. I am pretty sure that anyone who can finish that amazing meal will end up in a food coma!! Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a great meal that is specific to Florence!!

Yelp
We happened upon this restaurant because our first restaurant was closed and the second was packed...ok, we'll keep walking. I had been wanting to try this place, so I was happy to try it...just never like doing that for the first time with guests in town. It turned out pretty great. The guys got meat, I believe the pork and the steak with peppers, they were both very happy. I got a very tasty pasta and someone got the minestrone soup. I would say I will go again, if anything to improve my review (sorry, it's been a few weeks).
google avatar

Aiko S.

Yelp
Our hotel concierge suggested we try this place after our first choices were full. This was a solid meal we had in Florence. It didn't feel at like a tourist trap like many other restaurants do. We ordered a cheese plate which was really good, and the steak. The steak was solid, though the food took a long time to come out. It was also extremely hot and humid in the back of the restaurant where we were seated, so the meal was pretty uncomfortable. Overall just ok.
google avatar

Sherry C.

Yelp
Came here for dinner and ordered: - Burrata with truffles with olive oil - Gnocchi in a spicy sauce with salami, roasted red papers and pecorino romano - Bistecca Fiorentina Burrata was excellent, truffles very subtle flavor with the olive oil on a bed of arugula. The gnocchi was excellent served with spicy salami and pecorino romano. It had a very pungent aroma and strong rich flavors. The Bistecca was good but not as good as Sostanza. The meat was a bit stringy.

Yelp
The food and wine were absolutely incredible. The service was below par as our waiter seemed to be upset about something. But nonetheless we didn't let it ruin our experience. The goat cheese bruschetta was a perfect way to start and homemade Spaghetti and ravioli finished it off. The nozzole wine by the bottle was cheap and surprisingly great! (Chianti Classico)
google avatar

Hae A.

Yelp
Some of the best pasta I've had while in Italy. The gnocchi was soft and the sauce wonderfully creamy and truffle-y. The spaghettini was the best pasta I've had. My bf's pick was some pasta with cheese and beef cheeks was also good. We also ordered the beef with spicy herbs expecting beef with spicy seasoning. We were wrong and received beef with whole leaf sage and other "spicy" herbs on the side. I didn't mind and thought it was tasty. However, next time I go I think I will get my fill on their gnocchi and spaghettini.
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
Overall, I really enjoyed this place. The food was super fresh and extremely flavorful. We enjoyed the mixed brushetta and the pork cheek pasta. I think the highlight of the night though was the beef tartare with truffles. Every single bite had a crunch of sea salt and a piece of truffle, it was truly wonderful. The only complaint I had was that the service was spotty. I feel like because we were there a little early (7PM) they seemed a little off put. We were staying next door at Firenze Number so it was really close and convenient. I would definitely go back!

Yelp
Our large group of 14 people was able to secure the private alcove on the second floor. The atmosphere was fantastic and having the tv on Italian soccer help make this dinner a fun event between enjoying great tastes of food and cheering on the various teams. Overall, everyone enjoyed the meal as each plate was brimming with lovely flavours, great spices, and perfect char on the steaks. It also helps that they were extremely generous with the black truffles on the gnocchi and beef tartare. We've never seen so much truffles on a plate except at 10 times the price at 2+ star Michelin places. Our table ordered the charcuterie platters and assorted crostini to start. The waiter (who is a Justin Timberlake look a like) was quick, cheerful, and though he didn't speak English perfectly... he was able to translate the menu for us to order amazing food. Primi was composed of homely comfort soups and hearty pastas. The spinach gnocchi with gorgonzola and truffle is a dish that everyone had to order once we stole a piece from a person at our table. Really stands out. The Florentine beef may not be the best in Florence but it was close to it. Massive pieces of beef are presented to us before they were given to the chef to charr to perfection. They are on the rare and mooing 'doneness' but we didn't get the eye roll when our Englishmen asked for well done. The butter chicken Florentine style was truly a decadent dish. We were truly impressed with the service as only one wait staff served us the entire night but he worked his butt off to keep us smiling and laughing along side with him. It helps he's quite nice to look at.
google avatar

Jennie C.

Yelp
The only meal in Italy that gave me stomach woes afterwards and it didn't taste all that good either. I started out with chicken liver pate on bruschetta, which was ok. The portion was generous, but I'm not used to warm pate and in the end it was a bit too rich. For entree I had some sort of homemade spaghetti in cream sauce with ham. When it arrived, the pasta was hidden under such a copious amount of cream sauce, I thought they'd mistakenly brought me a soup instead. The pasta was way undercooked and had none of that delightful texture I love about handmade pasta. The sauce was so thick and rich I lost my appetite after a few bites. Big disappointment!
google avatar

Tara W.

Yelp
Another night, another dinner in lovely Florence. Was pretty empty late on a Sunday night. Freestyle bruschetta- liver, cheese, tomato, white bean Pappardelle with tomato- we ordered because the couple next to us did. How can something so simple be so good? Curly spicy pasta- like a spicy Mac and cheese with bacon. Get this too. Fried chicken and rabbit- a giant platter of fried goodness. Meat, veggies, and even some sage leaves. So hot and fresh with a light thin batter crust. Arugula salad Panna cotta Tiramisu

Yelp
Just got back from a wonderful dinner at Cipolla Rossa and the flavors are still lingering on my tongue (in a good way). The partner and I had 2 antipasti, 2 pastas, house wine, and a dessert. Food/Beverage Rundown: - Tomato and Basil Bruschetta - A great rendition of a simple classic - Cheese Mousse with Tomatoes - the name is much simpler than the dish would suggest. It's basically really delicious light fluffy cheese served with diced tomatoes inside a delicate "parimigiana crisp" shell (google it) drizzled with a balsamic reduction. Amazing! - Pasta with Tomato and Parmigiana - Simple Italian food at its best. Wide ribbons of fresh pasta with fresh cooked cherry tomatoes and shavings of parmigiana. - Ravioli with Meat Ragu - The partner had this... and according to him the flavors were spectacular. Spinach and ricotta ravioli with a brown meat sauce. The only complaint of the meal comes here -- there were some issues with bone/tendon bits that made their way into the meat sauce which was a bit of a turn-off. Considering the reviews, however, I'd think this was more of a one-off than a recurring issue. - House red wine - Solid, drinkable Italian wine for €10/litre. I heart Italy. - Tiramisu - Hands down the best tiramisu I've ever had... (and I'm kind of a tiramisu connoisseur) For us tourists, they offer an english menu that is translated colorfully. The staff was all smiles and seemed genuinely happy to help out in any way needed. Reservations are generally recommended, though we were able to get a table at 7:30pm on a Friday night (a bit early for local standards).
google avatar

Tina L.

Yelp
This was our best meal in Florence. Must have: grilled pork chop and grilled veal chop with red onion salad. Spaghetti Bolognese and house pasta with tomato sauce were also good. Would definitely recommend.
google avatar

Jen L.

Yelp
This place came highly recommended from friends. The food was amazing! We had panzanella for an appetizer and then pesto pasta w-almonds and the pork ragu as well as a very economical and decent house Chianti. We would have it all again! We did not have a reservation and were told to wait outside for 10mins. The maitre d' seemed annoyed with us and proceeded to seat other walk up customers in front of us. A waitress seemed embarrassed when we asked why and sat us immediately and was very nice and helpful. This would have been 5 Stars if not for one woman's attitude as our first impression which almost made us leave...we are glad we didn't.
google avatar

Joseph C.

Yelp
We had a leisurely lunch here. The location is convenient to San Lorenzo, but on a quiet alley that avoids the tourist crush plaguing most of Florence. The clientele was largely Italian. In sum, a good spot for a casual and quiet lunch.
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
Love the service And the authentic food. Best food in all of Florence with locals eating more often than visitors. Melania and Cosimo were so fun and kind. We have been here 3 times in the week in Florence and no food or prices or service have come close to this restaurant.
google avatar

Tony P.

Yelp
OK... The food was food, but if it rains, stay away. We sat inside and saw a little water on the floor. As the meal progressed, they gave up on the water and let the place flood. By the time we left, at least an inch. Really?
google avatar

Fred S.

Yelp
Just happened to walk by this place and it looked inviting. We were greeted by a friendly hostess and our waiter was helpful and informative. We wanted a steak and he brought out a huge side of beef for our approval. Then it was cooked perfectly. Everything was fresh and very Tuscan.

Michael J.

Yelp
Excellent meal and a great atmosphere! Very good And a little off the main area so not over packed and prices were reasonable!
google avatar

Brian B.

Yelp
Best brischetta I had while here in Florence and the pasta was deliciously memorable. Loved my meal
google avatar

Alan F.

Yelp
If you are in Florence stop by this place and you will not be disappointed. The meal was good and the prices were even better. The waitstaff was on the younger side and had no issues with English. Definetlly worth a try.
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
We were staying near here, so decided to give it a try and showed up hungry (bordering on hangry?). We had both a waiter and a waitress at different times of the evening, but the waiter was hilarious with a good sense of humor (and for those who complain about the service being slow or inattentive, different countries have different ideas about good service, so to me it was typical for Italy, slow and relaxed, and they didn't pour your wine for you anywhere I went). We got a nice local red wine, and then decided to order both a pasta and a meat dish (I said we were hungry, right?). My pasta was amazing--it was a red creamy meat sauce on pasta that I loved, I almost licked the plate. I got rabbit as my second dish, and it was decent but not memorable (very simple and not over-seasoned). However, both of my husband's pasta and meat dishes were very good. I would recommend this place if you'd like some good pasta and Tuscan dishes--we had a good experience.

William K.

Yelp
The food we had here was great. We ate lunch here, and I had the green gnocchi. It was great. Other people at my table had two different pastas, the names of which I cannot recall.
google avatar

Laura G.

Yelp
The absolute best panna cotta I have ever eaten!!!! I want to go back to Florence just to order it again! L'ottima panna cotta nel mondo!
google avatar

Seth S.

Yelp
We finished up a private tour and our host recommended us the restaurant for dinner; The bistecca fiorentina was amazing and I was impressed with the house wine compared to other places we ate in Firenze
google avatar

Jeremy J.

Yelp
A good place to get classic Tuscan food; service was good, atmosphere was homey, a pleasant spot, clearly popular with families, locals, tourists alike.

Yelp
As an Italian American who travels from NY to Italy often, it is always important for me to do a lot of research before a meal. After hours of reading sites, blogs, and comments on both here and Tripadvisor, I stumbled upon an interview of this chef and owner talking about the great pride he had in making each dish in the true spirit of Florentine cooking, even if most of his clients were tourists. It was this sincerity, along with a fantastic and authentic menu which made me select this place. As many have already said the staff is very hospitable and alert. They treat all patrons, whether tourist or local, with the same professional and courteous attitude. The food was not only perfectly executed, but flavorful and of the highest quality. We shared an appetizer of mixed salumi, bottle of house Chianti, two amazing pasta dishes, and finally a bistecca Fiorentina that we didn't have to feel guilty about because it was the perfect sharing portion of 600 grams, as opposed to the over two pounds only offered elsewhere. With two coffees and an excellent homemade tiramisu our bill came to a very reasonable 100 euros considering the quality we were served. In a city where there are many fake "trattorias" ready to serve you mediocre quality food, do yourself a favor and walk a half block more for the real thing. If you happen to see the gnocchi al tartufo on the menu...definitely order them. You'll be dreaming about them for weeks to come! If you love a great tomato based sauce, the tortelli alla carrettiera is delicious and fragrant. Guaranteed to be one of your best meals in Florence!

Daniele S.

Yelp
