On the Grid : Osteria Cotta

"Cotta is a beautiful Italian restaurant with a really cool layout that reminds me of a cozy Italian courtyard. When you walk in, you'll notice instantly the high ceilings, rustic design and open aired kitchen. There is an adorable upstairs area as well with plenty of seating and a lounge as well. The food is incredible and affordable. Almost everything i've had there is hearty and tasty. Check out the pizza's and risotto balls which are pretty. Cotta is always a great place to go with a group of people or on an intimate date. Highly recommended." - Ken Pao

Absolutely loved the vibe inside! Food was super mid (ordered margherita pizza, spaghetti pomodoro and baked ricotta). Everything was super underwhelming and unseasoned. The atmosphere made up for the lack of flavor so I would definitely come back for happy hour to enjoy the space! Staff were so accommodating and very efficient!!

Loved the rustic vibe and the food was amazing. We had the pizza, pasta and dessert and all was delicious! Our server was very attentive and helpful and gave us great details on the menu

Went for brunch, and it was an excellent deal. $32 for bottomless mimosas as well as an entree. The food was great, and the servers were attentive. The atmosphere was intimate and just the right amount of fancy.

A great spot for date night. Very cozy and intimate (request for dining upstairs). Food was delicious and service was quick. Definitely try the burrata, pasta and tiramisu!

We had a great time out tonight at Osteria Cotta. The decor of this establishment has a nice old-world type charm. It is very cozy here, the food was excellent as well, and the menu pricing was fair. We will definitely return, Osteria Cotta is a fantastic date night spot on the Upper West Side!

First time coming here for brunch and the food was amazing & flavorful the brick oven pizza is a must! I would definitely recommend, the restaurant has a cool wooden theme definitely coming back!

Had brunch on Sunday and it was such a nice experience. This is a warm and chic spot with a nice menu. Two floors with plenty of seating but weekend fill up so I highly suggest reservations. Brunch menu is nice with egg dishes, French toast, paninis and the well known wood fired pizzas. Reasonably priced, nice wine list and excellent service.

Had an early dinner for a group of 7 at the upstairs area. Went mostly for the happy hour, but it does not apply to the seating area upstairs, only applicable if sitting downstairs or outside. We decided to forego the happy hour and sit upstairs. The bar and downstairs area only has high chairs. The outside area is not very attractive. Groups of 8 or more have to order from a prefix menu ($40 pp) We ordered from the regular menu. The pizza is ok. The lasagna was good. The calamari was good. The spaghetti was tasteless and very salty. The penne was ok, a bit salty. The salmon was ok. The branzino was ok. The chicken milanese was not good. Ordered a bottle of red wine (screw top for $38 ) was ok. The glass of Lambrusco was good The service was average. The upstairs feels dingy. The food overall is a 3. Most of it lacks flavor, and is very heavy on salt. It’s basically Americanized Italian food. Only worth a visit if you do the happy hour. Would not return.

Yelp
Pro: the food & price We were a party of 9 and did the family style menu. The portions were great and came in a nice flow. Con: the service. Our waitress was so rude & i would've honestly not tipped her if it wasn't already included in our bill. I want to say we were an easy bunch, we knew our food selections right when we sat down as we had looked at the menu prior to arriving. When she was taking the drink orders, I asked her for the mocktails and she responded with a ton of attitude & was like "they're all on the menu" and moved on to another person in the party. I didn't see them in the menu version that I had, so I asked again and she loooked annoyed and pointed out all the cocktails. So I simply asked "oh so you can make them all non alcoholic," where she was like "no. I'll bring you the other menu." I wasn't the only one in the party that senses her annoyance with us.

Yelp
I attended a group dinner upstairs in the back room at Osteria Cotta. The family-style portions were very generous and we had plenty of leftovers to take home. This is Italian American comfort food: meatballs, fried calamari, arancini, pizza, spaghetti. And for the most part, it's very tasty. I found the desserts forgettable. The wine also wasn't great (I sampled 3 of the 4 on offer and didn't want more than a sip of any of the selections) but I cannot be sure who made the wine choices, so I won't hold that against Osteria Cotta. The restaurant is easily accessible by subway (that's how I arrived here) and the short walk from the station to the restaurant was picturesque (think: romantic comedy set in New York).

Yelp
Pros: Great ambience, fast service, and delicious food and drinks Cons: The high top tables were too close and just the tightness of the space.

Yelp
The atmosphere is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! There are brick walls with orange lights that are very romantic. The restaurant is candlelit - and as a regular I recommend the upper floor, by the balcony, for the best experience. 10/10 The food is breathtaking. I recommend the burrata salad, is you want something light, or the pappardelle if you want something heavier. 9.5/10 (The pizza is delicious, but if you don't like flimsy pizza it's not for you. I like it flimsy) The service is good, but one waitress is not very nice. Me and my family have been going to Cotta for my entire life- we live around the corner. By now we are well known in the restaurant, and the waiters know our usuals by now. Only one time EVER have I ever felt like I wasn't treated well, and that was by this one waitress who snapped at me when I told her my order before she was ready. She was putting in my sister's order, and it looked like she was done, so I told her my order. She glared at me and told me to WAIT MY TURN! 9/10

Yelp
After a bad experience a few years ago, I knew I had to go back and I'm glad I did. Stopped in for Sunday Brunch and it was such a nice experience. Food was so good. There were 3 of us and all 3 meals were good. Mushroom Omelet- Three Egg omelet with Mushrooms & Parmesan. Served with hot crunchy French fries and a salad. French Toast- 2 thick over sized slices of bread cooked with a nice crust on the outside and topped with fresh strawberries and hot maple syrup....yum! Meatball Panini- Wood fired Panini stuffed with Meatballs, Mozzarella, and Cottas goodTomato Sauce. Great menu. Brunch served Saturday and Sunday 11-3:30. Prices are reasonable and service was very good.

Yelp
Met old friends here for a wonderful Sunday evening dinner reunion. We sat at one of the high top rectangular tables in main bar area. Two had pastas (pappardelle with bolognese and spaghetti with clams.) One had the great chicken. I had the pizza with spinach, olives, peppers. All the food was excellent. Nice cocktails and wine options. Service was perfect too. Had a great evening and experience. And the weather was lovely. Great early start to summer!
google avatar

Yelp
Food was fantastic and the service was great. Be warned, MUST have a reservation if going during peak hours, this is a very small restaurant and seating is incredibly limited. The tables can also be shared with other parties depending on which table you are sat. We ordered the calamari, penne vodka, truffle fries and a margarita pizza. The fries were absolutely to die for. Would absolutely go back.

Yelp
Food 5/10 Went here for brunch and the food was alright. Got an omelette and the toast came out cold. Atmosphere 8/10 Nice interior and plenty of space, two floors. Service 4/10 Took forever for the food to come up, it was an hour until we got to eat. Disappointing. They gave us a free chocolate cake though as an apology. Felt bad for the waiter he was the only person staffed :(

Yelp
The ambiance is very nice. Love the bar area. Really enjoyed happy hour and love that they have the personal size pizzas options. We had the meatball pizza. Wish it was more saucy. But overall still good. We loved the rosemary wings. They tasted very good and grilled great. The pasta Pappardelle was tasteful and my bf enjoyed it. The service was great. She was very attentive and always checked in.

Yelp
We enjoyed sitting outside on a weekday night. Outdoor dining here has a better atmosphere during warmer days when there aren't any tents set up. We ordered the rucola pizza and the hanger steak. The pizza was delicious, but the steak was a bit too chewy for us. Service was very attentive. For dessert, we tried the Nutella calzone, which featured a blend of ricotta cheese and Nutella. It wasn't overly sweet but was quite filling due to the bread.

Yelp
Wow! This place is great and totally unexpected from the exterior! It seems super small from the entrance and reception/bar area but has sooo much seating on the top floor and in the back! We had reservations on a chilly Friday night and it was packed! I loved the decor and lighting and overall ambiance inside. The downstairs and bar area is definitely very hectic and too crowded to sit, but the upstairs is really nice. We got the veggie pizza, pesto pasta, and beets & truffle fries. Probably not the best order, but nonetheless the food was average, unfortunately. The pizza was limp and soggy. The pasta was super good and flavorful. I wish there was a little more spice or I had asked for chili flakes. The beets were unique and tasty. The fries could've been crispier but the truffle was clear. The food wasn't very impressive, but with a better order of the classics would have put is in a better place. The food is also not too expensive and not overly filling. I would definitely come back, but not sure if I would recommend to someone looking for great Italian food.

Yelp
There are no shortage of charming Italian spots on the Upper West Side. While Osteria Cotto doesn't exactly stand out from the pack, it made for a pleasant meal on a Friday night. Famished after wandering around the Winter Village at Bryant Park, we went uptown and got a table without a reservation, being led to the dining room upstairs. The rustic, brick lined walls and low lighting made for a romantic atmosphere while the menu covered the expected mix of antipasti, pizzas, pastas, and heartier entrees. We split two pizzas: the Tartufo (truffle cream + truffle oil + mushrooms) and the Verdure (San Marzano tomatoes + mushrooms + spinach + roasted red pepper + olive, made on request with burrata rather than mozzarella). Both pizzas were crisp and very well made, with the truffle aroma not overpowering the Tartufo and the briny olives on the Verdure bringing a depth of flavour to the dish. Service was attentive but the meal had one flaw: the bottle of Montepulciano we ordered was chilled cold, dulling a lot of the wine's taste

Yelp
Mama Mia! It's hard to ever stumble on a place that creates a food that becomes "the best I ever had". But Osteria Cotta succeeded in doing just that. We went Italian for dinner & were warmly greeted & shown to a beautiful corner of the restaurant's upstairs. Our table's location had beautiful ambiance & serenity amid the hustle & bustle of NYC. I chose lasagna as my entree, & I gladly proclaim it from the mountain tops...this was the best lasagna I've ever had!! It was large & light at the same time. There was a thin layer of veal, layers of delicate pasta, a thick layer of whipped & airy ricotta, abundant seasonings, &...the deepest, richest, most flavorful, tomatoey sauce I've ever had. This dish was outstanding!

Yelp
This is such a cute restaurant! I came here with some friends for dinner and we had a really nice time. I ordered the orecchiette which was good but I kinda ended up regretting simply because I got tired of it after my first few bites. This dish would've been better if it had more complexity or was less homogeneous. Everything was all one flavor is that made sense, it would've been good paired with something like blackened salmon I think. One of my friends got the lasagna which was actually incredible! I highlyyy recommend. The baked ricotta was fine but nothing special and the chocolate cake was good but would've been better served warm and with some more strawberries since it really brought out a nice taste in the chocolate. The service was good, definitely a good date night spot.

Yelp
Great space! Has outdoor seating, semi outdoor seating, indoor dining and a bar! We went on a particularly nice day and the vibes were great! Service was quick even though there were so many people, everyone was attentive, and the food was delicious! If you've been to Ainslie Bowery, this is the same brand and the same food. Eggs in purgatory is always my favorite. The tartness of the tomato with the polenta is just perfection. I personally enjoy the white sangria much more than the mimosas but both were ordered for the table and $28 for unlimited is just unbeatable in the city!
google avatar

Yelp
What can I say? It was amazing. The lasagna was a 10. The atmosphere is lovely. Very romantic. Customer service was great. Will definitely be back to this one. One day when I let New York again to the chef excellent excellent job.

Yelp
This place is quite delicious. I came here for dinner with a friend and got really good gnocchi. It tasted fresh and flavorful. There are so many Italian restaurants and sometimes it can be overwhelming to decide which one to go to, but this one is a goodie. It is perfect if you are craving classic Italian food. Their menu is not super creative, but it doesn't need to be. This isn't a restaurant I would travel super far to go to, but if you are in the neighborhood or the area and are craving Italian food its perfect. The inside is cute, it has a Italian tavern feel to it. I will say it is a little dark inside, but that does add to the tavern/cozy feel of the place. It is particularly nice in the winter because it feels cozy. They also have a decent wine list. I didn't have any of the cocktails, but my friend liked them! It is a perfect spot for either a date night or hanging out with a couple friends :)

Yelp
The pizza was pretty good and can use more basil in it. it was soft like a cloud and yet crispy at the same time. i'm looking forward to my next visit and trying out the other pizzas here! The best dish to me was the Homemade Gnocchi ! It is so good i can't stop thinking about it and it set the bar for gnocchi in nyc. every bite was fulfilling and packed with flavor. so simple, so fresh, yet complex. trust me and try this gnocchi. the other pasta dish i got was a bit too salty and had meat in it. i would stick to trying their house made offerings because sheeesh that gnocchi was incredible im still talking about it. the ambiance was cozy and very intimate it's perfect for a wholesome evening out. the service was fine too i was seated upstairs and the staff would come in once in awhile to check up if i needed anything and were kind i can't wait to go back here again! A+

Yelp
Great food. Excellent service, come and have a great time. You will be impacted Bring a friend.

Yelp
Pretty average food overall. Came here for happy hour and they have some small bites and drinks for a decent price. You can get a personal pie (any pizza from their regular menu) for just $8 which is pretty nice but the pizza is smaller of course. We got the meatball and amatriciana and both were pretty mid. The sauce was really watery on both and I didn't love either of them. That being said, they were also only $8 which is a steal in the city. Overall, I would recommend this place if you want a good bang for your buck.

Yelp
I came last night to celebrate my birthday as I've eaten at this restaurant before and lived the food. Unfortunately we were seated in the upstairs area and it was so hot. We asked our waitress if she could make the AC any cooler and she said that there was nothing she could do. The food was delicious but unfortunately the heat made the experience very disappointed.
google avatar

Ant L.

Yelp
Old school rustic NY charm. Great ambiance and the pasta is pretty good too. Will definitely come back again.
google avatar

G S.

Yelp
Limited pasta dishes. Perhaps a little saltier than I like my pomodoro. The Aperol Spritz was really just a Prosecco. And if I wasn't a fan of Prosecco, I might have sent it back. Now for the right things. The appetizer meatballs and arancini were on point. The waitress very sweet and attentive. And the restaurant itself a great hang out place. I would come back and try something else on the menu.
google avatar

Emily T.

Yelp
I cannot say enough good things about Osteria Cotta! Both the dine in and take out experiences have been fantastic. The restaurant itself is so cute and even has little hidden tables that are more private. I love the meatballs, orecchiette, Amatriciana Pizza, Tartufo Pizza and the Arugula Salad. Great cocktail list with multiple Negroni options. The prices and staff are great too. Will be back soon to try more of the menu!
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome brunch spot! I'm here visiting NYC on vacation and found this place by searching brunch spots in the city. I was not disappointed. The prices are reasonable and the mimosas are great. Our server was prompt and attentive and we had a great time! We shared the French toast and pancetta and Asiago omelet. Both were delicious! I would definitely dine here again!

Yelp
We were greeted immediately and given a seat immediately. We ordered red wine and rosemary wings to start. The rosemary wings were a great compliment to my drink. I am not well educated with wine, so I asked for a sweeter one, and our server, Shannon, was able to explain and help me pick an exquisite wine. I started with a bolder red and then transitioned to a lesser bold. For my entree, I was torn between the penne with vodka sauce and the pomodoro. I settled with the rich and I couldn't get enough of the basil flavor. My partner ordered the penne with vodka, so I got to try my second choice. Everything was delicious, and I thought our bill was going to be hefty, but we were able to keep it pretty low and still order a decent amount of fun. Towards the end, I even thought we should have added to our bill and ordered the mashed potatoes, but I was carb-ed out after the pasta. For New York, I think they did a sound job with the placement of the tables, and their decor is very captivating. It was a lovely setting. I'd also like to thank our server for being fun and super sweet when servicing us. She definitely made the whole experience worthwhile. Sharron was the cherry to the icing on a delicious cake. Speaking of cake, we took two desserts home and enjoyed them to the fullest extent. The Nutella calzone, an exciting combination of ricotta, walnuts, and the best hazelnut spread, made my night just a little bit better.

Yelp
My favorite Italian food on the UWS. Reasonably priced, delicious, and easy to get a reservation/walk in if you weren't sure what to do for dinner a week in advance. My boyfriend and I love to go here to grab pasta or a quick bite on the fly. Staff is super kind and helpful and the overall ambiance can feel fancy, but in actuality is unpretentious. Little gem of a place, will be back soon!
google avatar

Yelp
Food is excellent and the price is right. Ambiance is cozy and warm. This is a great spot to meet friends or family for dinner or a date night.

Yelp
One of my fave places on upper west side. Great atmosphere, food, menu, service. I especially love their happy hour!
google avatar

Yelp
Osteria Cotta is a great spot for Italian good on the UWS. I made a reservation so I didn't have to wait at all. Service was amazing, super quick and efficient. The ambiance was lovely, it was very romantic and cozy. We ordered the Endive salad and the Orechiette pasta - both were so delicious. The Orechiette is a pesto pasta; it wasn't too salty and I enjoyed how creamy it was. The salad was so amazing, I loved how light it was. The vinaigrette was delicious, slightly sweet.
google avatar

Josh R.

Yelp
We came for dinner and split the Wood Fired Rosemary Wings and the House-Made Pappardelle with the braised pork ragu. The wings were juicy and had so much flavor, and the braised pork ragu sauce was so flavorful. Overall, I was very impressed with the meal!
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
Had a few good snacks and drinks - all good! But the hostess refused to close the curtains by the front door on a cold windy day. We got cold each time the front door opened when sitting at bar pretty far from door. When I asked to close the curtains to stop the cold blast the hostess said "we never close them. They are for decoration only. Pretty stupid. I won't be back. Suggest to avoid a place that is unmanaged like this.
google avatar

Waheda I.

Yelp
Cute restaurant that's opened late in the EWS. Pizza was good, burrata was solid. I also got the tiramisu which was my favorite. Service could be better. Our server told us the restaurant was closed even though there were clearly other customers. We didn't say anything and just left. Not sure if he just wanted to clear our table or didn't like us. But a bit weird. Aside from that solid restaurant.
google avatar

Stuart G.

Yelp
Comfortable casual friendly busy Italian bar with good solid traditional foods and drinks. A go-to repeat visit place in that area (upper west side).
google avatar

Justin N.

Yelp
Came here for brunch with a large group of friends. We wanted to do the regular bottomless brunch but were required to do the family style brunch instead because of the size of our party. Everything was average for the high price. The inside of the restaurant was dark and ambient-- nice for a dinner with friends, but not entirely fitting for brunch in my opinion. The rose sangria and arancini were my favorite parts of the meal. The family style brunch menu options are somewhat limited and boring in my opinion-- especially as our large table was limited to only three options for main dishes. They offer bottomless mimosas, Bloody Marys, and rose sangria as a part of the brunch. I liked the rose sangria the best.

Yelp
Great spot for a date and some tapas. It's very intimate and the lights are dimmed. Service was top notch and everything tasted delish.

Yelp
Thank you very much! Had a great birthday celebration. Shea made it the best birthday ever. Thank you so much for your hospitality. The food was delicious and so was the drinks. I am happy and my friends are happy.

Yelp
I had a lovely pizza, service was outstanding, friendly, unhurried, relaxing atmosphere. On my first night in New York, we were very impressed.

Richard P.

Yelp
We made a reservation for three a week in advance for Saturday night at 6:30. We got there and the only "table" they offered us was a 22 x 48 slab of marble high top near the bar. None of us wanted to sit there. we asked about upstairs, but they said they had two parties going on. We weren't offered outside (We didn't want ) or the enclosed outside a few feet away (we would have taken and seemed to have tables) We left. I'm still giving it three stars because I have eaten there twice before and liked it and that's why I wanted to go back.
google avatar

Bijal R.

Yelp
Pretty good Italian restaurant on the upper west side. Great for a large party. Note, for a large party you would have to select from a pre fix menu and it is family style servings. For a large party, service was quick. Beautiful dim ambiance. The appetizers were amazing, we ordered aranchini, rosemary wings, margarita pizzas and calamari. All items were delicious and incredibly fresh. The main courses were just okay, you can find better options at other Italian restaurants. We ordered penne, salmon, sautéed spinach and fusilli bolognese.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
This restaurant nails it with fantastic ambiance, delicious food, and top-notch service. Plus, the prices are reasonable, making it a must-visit Italian spot in the UWS.

Buddy B.

Yelp
Too begin, I have eaten at Cotta several times. This is the first time my friend and I decided to eat downstairs near the bar. Their high top tables are way to cramped and the seats themselves are uncomfortably small. That aside the overall experience was pleasant. The atmosphere is quite cozy and the soft lighting adds an element of intimacy even though you are seated close to other guests. We began our meal with aranchini pomodoro and meatballs. Both came in red sauces that were differently flavored. The meatballs were light and airy while the aranchini were delightfully crunchy. Top marks for those. For my main I ordered the chicken milanese. The cutlet was prepared well , with the proper crunch and a nice solid texture. Topped with an arugula salad it should have been a delightful meal. Unfortunately, the cutlet was grossly under seasoned and a bit dry. With the arugula salad only lightly dressed there was no way to salvage the cutlet. By no means was it inedible, but it was disappointing compared to my other visits. The service, as always was top tier, but the combination of an uncomfortable seat and an average dish was too much to overcome this time. I will visit again, but the milanese will not be my choice for main.
google avatar

D'Von A.

Yelp
Our food was amazing! Everything was well seasoned , presentable , and timely. My favorite items were the wings (their blue cheese is something serious!) and the lasagna. I highly recommend getting those two items. Our server Oliver was amazing .

Yelp
A classic Italian, delicious uws restaurant. Long celebrated by locals. Menu updates - always tasty. Love the vibe. Music creates a hip vibe - a positive dining spin. A year round go to. Worth your visit.

Yelp
Ambiance was beautiful! The food was okay, I got the carbonara classica and it was fresh and right amount of sauce, pasta and meat. Taste was missing something. The drinks were super good though! Service was great. Will try again!!
google avatar

Renita A.

Yelp
Came here for an impromptu dinner and was very pleasantly surprised. The ambiance was very warm, cozy and inviting. We tried the calamari, pizza special of the day, spicy sausage pizza with cherry tomatoes, and the orecchiette. I will have to say this is one of the best pastas I've had in a long time. Well worth the trip!
google avatar

Leah B.

Yelp
The ambiance was a bit stuffy and the food wasn't very memorable. The staff was courteous but since they seated us in a far corner and it wasn't very busy on a Friday evening, it was a bit hard to ask for something. The passion fruit mocktail was too sour. The house made pasta is definitely better though, it had good texture and tasted fresh.
google avatar

Vishnu G.

Yelp
I had the gnocchi and pizza verdure here. Both were great options at a reasonable price. I'm a big fan of the vibe at the restaurant - there isn't very much seating, but the outdoor seating is pleasant when the weather is nice. A solid choice in UWS.
google avatar

Lindsey O.

Yelp
Good pizza and service! I went with a group and shared three pizzas - the meatball, the truffle one with prosciutto, and the margherita. My favorite was the truffle but the table really ate up the meatball one, too. I didn't try the margherita bc I wanted to hog the truffle pieces and if others were spending time elsewhere I was certainly claiming my stake. Would definitely go back if in the area!
