Osteria del Matto

Wonderfull little Italian restaurant in the historic centre of Spoleto. The restaurant serves a fixed menu. Then you get around seven courses of the traditional Italian menu and a bottle of red or white wine. The dishes are served by the owner, who likes to talk a lot with the guests and he makes a lot of jokes. His mom is the cook. The food is delicious. The atmosphere in the little restaurant is great. It is wonderfull decorated and has only room dor about thirty guests. Real value for money.

What can I say about Osteria del Matto? It was a truly wonderful Umbrian culinary experience. The warm welcome from the lady who’s been cooking everything herself for decades made it feel like home. The service was on point, and the quality-to-price ratio couldn’t be better. The highlight of the meal is definitely the pasta, served at the end, rich in flavor and tradition. The house wine was excellent, and the space itself is beautifully chaotic, filled with a mix of unique and quirky details that make it truly special. If being "matto" (that means crazy) means this kind of atmosphere and food, then count me in. I’ll definitely be back!

Very original concept where the menu exclusively is set (currently at €27 per person) and varies depending on what the family have bought at market that day - plus veggies from their own garden. Front of house is Proietti Filippo, a real character, with his son as head waiter and mother & sister in the kitchen. A real family affair and wonderful food, the best for us was Strangozzi with Porcini & Truffle. Carafes of vino rosso or bianco for €5 wash it all down nicely.

We stopped here not knowing what to expect. They explained to us that they only have a fixed menu and it's a chef surprise, well, we decided to be adventurous and here we are... We started with 3 different appetizer plates to share , they came in succession and they were so good we ate them before I even remembered to take a pic, all three of them were really delicious but the sausage grilled with grapes and tomatoes was to die for We than had two meat dishes , one with chicken and one with ribs , both very tasty. The ribs were cooked to perfection. If that wasn't enough we got a pasta dish with a regional typical ragù. Once again very good indeed. After all of that food we got the desserts too, they were a Spoleto typical called crescionda, once again very good! The service was good and very friendly. So we highly recommend it especially if you are willing to be surprised by the chef! Sorry for the missing appetizers photo, they were sooo good we ate them before even thinking about pictures

Stopped by steps into the alley for lunch, Prix Fix 3 course offered, sausage, pork fillet and pasta along with a few bruschetta bites, water and wine. Chef altered dishes due to allergica pomodora. Quick staff, good music, hungry dog ;).

Excellent food. Host very friendly and chatty. It is a fixed menu. My pescatarian wife planned to pass me any meat dishes. When the host discovered she does not eat meat, they made something specially for her. That's a nice gesture. So long as you eat meat, and are content to take whatever dish turns up, then this place offers superb food. At a fixed price of Euro 35 including wine, the value is excellent.

Set menu at €25 for plenty of starters, pasta and a small meat dish plus dessert. House wine for €5 the 1/2 litre. Very simple food but such a nice setting and good to get a surprise of what food you’d be eating! Cute little courtyard to eat outside just off a busy piazza.

The food was mediocre but the ambiance was eclectic and really fun. I loved the fixed price menu and being surprised by what dish comes next. We were lucky to get a table, so be sure to come on the earlier side (or make a reservation).

I fell in love with Spoleto the minute I drove into town, but Fillipo and Ann made my time here the best part of my vacation. The food is amazing and keeps coming. It is a pre-set menu for 25 euros, and I don't know how anyone could finish the meal. Everything was delicious! The owners were friendly and entertaining. I was there on a slow night and thoroughly enjoyed conversations with them. I would give them 10 stars if I could!

Superb!!!! This family-owned restaurant is amazing! The food, the wine, the atmosphere, all wonderful. Do yourself a favor and eat here. The local cuisine will delight you. I wish I could give 10 stars.

This was an amazing...no, trip-making, serendipitous stop for us this week. Oh.My.God. If I could eat here every night I would. We didn't even realize there was no menu, just course after luscious course served by the most friendly and funny person ever. Wow. We just loved it. Not often does this happen on a vacation and it is so special. Please search this out if you are in Spoleto.

I was there tonight for the 5th time-always a MUST when visiting Spoleto----Bravi!!!!

Amazing 10 course meal for 25 euros. Come here hungry so you can enjoy the feast! Wine was also very affordable at only 5 euro for small carafe

All i have to say is OMG the food was made from scratch. The cook was the owners elderly mother who actually showed us how she made stuffed mushrooms truffle. If ever in spoletto, Italy this place is a must go. Beautiful city and beautiful people.

In the middle of Spoleto you will find this typical restaurant.Eat at this restaurant is so exceptional! the name means:"tavern of the crazy"...lights and furniture are absolutely original. The atmosphere report back in time in a magical world... the food is amazing... the kitchen is homemade... the restaurant is run by two women... the cook is a old lady who will make you enjoy delights of other (past,ancient)times. The menu is fixed but you'll can taste anything you want.You will drink eat delicious food .You can choose between white and red wine. The red win is the best but be careful you risk an hangover!!! The food is brought to you continuosly. Italian specialties of medieval time...croutons with lard...medieval dishes with farro..cut of beef with balsamic vinegar.. I can not find what is more tasty. After of these delights they bring you two delicoius kind of pasta. At the end you could taste fantastic cakes...Remember when you enter the restaurant you will find an iscription that says:"entra solo se bevi vino" (comes only if you drink wine)..This is the spirit of the "tavern's crazy"!

Mediocrity intermingled with very interesting recipes. An experience, not a meal, and an experience that wasn't for me. If a single piece of sausage followed by a half hour wait for another small portion of an unknown food is your idea of a good time, by all means. Credit where it's due, I sampled some very interesting crepes and a sort of risotto that I enjoyed too, but those were not worth the exorbitant price, the long wait, or the at best unremarkable majority of the other dishes. One of those was a military ration like grainy porridge, for perspective. Atmosphere is rather awkward, with the owners and their children ever-present. To some cozy and family like, to me unpleasant. Not the spot to "just eat".
