How I Travel: Julianna Margulies Knows the Best Osteria in Florence

"We happened upon a restaurant there called Osteria Del Pavone. All I'm saying is, you have to go there and get the onion flan, with creamy pecorino and truffles. It was my favorite part of Florence."

Our dinner at Osteria del Pavone was one of the best and truly delightful as I recall. We entered through the charming Osteria del Cinghiale Bianco & got to Osteria del Pavone. Since we didn’t have a reservation at Bianco restaurant the staff guided us thru to Pavone restaurant to a cozy spot at the bar counter. That was incredibly kind and accommodating. I guess they both belonged to the same owner as we were given menus from both the restaurants to order food. Both the restaurants had beautiful decor. One carried a traditional charm & the other a modern tone. We kicked off our meal with complimentary bread & olive oil. We ordered a refreshing Aperol Spritz and a glass of Chianti Classico. For starters, we dove into a creamy burrata topped with freshly shaved truffles and olive oil an intriguing combination of grilled crostini with toasted bread, anchovies, and a flavorful green paste & a sprinkle of olive oil. It was a unique and delicious combo to start with! For our main courses, we enjoyed a show-stopping dish, Chicken breast with pecorino and truffle & this dish was, without a doubt, the best and one of the highlight of our entire trip, & wife ordered wild boar ragu was equally satisfying. Both mains were perfectly complemented by two glasses of Bolgheri red wine. A special shout out to our bartender, who was not only knowledgeable about the menus and wine selections but also incredibly friendly and helpful, making our dinner experience even more enjoyable. We thoroughly savored every moment and every bite at Osteria del Pavone/ Osteria del Cinghiale Bianco. I highly recommend this bar & restaurant to anyone traveling to Florence.

Really nice upscale restaurant in Oltrano. Beautiful spaces. Service is great ,everyone was super friendly and helpful. The cocktail bar is also a nice plus, nice bartenders as well. The food was delicious , and it was definitely worth seeking it out.

"A tavola non si invecchia." (At the table, one does not grow old.) ~Italian Proverb It’s old school Italian, and they share the kitchen with Osteria del Cinghiale Bianco. We met Michael who owns both restaurants. The poached egg with truffles and perfectly prepared foie gras was phenomenal. And the buratta with truffles was wow too! Eccezionale!

My husband and I were here in May 2024 while on a trip to Italy for our 10 year anniversary. We still talk about this meal. Everything was perfect, the food, our waiter, the wine, espresso martinis. Everything! This restaurant was a suggestion of our rental host and we are so glad she suggested it. Our waiter was marvelous. We told him what we were thinking about getting and mentioned we had been on several wine tours and not yet found a white that we liked from the region. He adjusted our food order a bit and then brought a really delightful white (we have looked at getting it shipped to us in the future too and even found a wine shop in Chicago that carries it!). The onion flan was AMAZING. if you don’t like onion don’t get it but if you remotely like onions get it. Wow! Just wow. The octopus was also delightful. We just really enjoyed our entire meal. We would change nothing. Our waiter checked on us the perfect amount. He was friendly. You could tell he was a seasoned fine dinning waiter. He joked with us. We loved it. At the end of dinner I mentioned it was our last night in Florence and could he bring me a glass of red wine that he would give to someone potentially never coming back to the region. It was my second favorite of our time in Italy! I am missing pictures of several items! I can’t believe I didn’t take one of the octopus! My one small complaint is that we were sat in the very first front room. Which was layout a bit oddly and I wish we had been able to see farther into the restaurant.

It was absolutely amazing to experience how Pavone Team celebrated good food, vine and service. Thank you for two wonderful evenings in Firence!

Google
The shrimp risotto appetizer was delicious. I also had the beef tartar which was mixed at the tables with a number of spices and onion etc. It was so fresh tasting. We sat outside which was our choice-a bit loud sometimes with a car or two but otherwise lovely. The inside is really nice.

Food is ok. We had them remake a dish and the mussels were cold and the pasta was microwaved. Not worth the price. Better options all around

Hidden Gem! My friend and I were fortunate to get a table our last night in Florence, without a reservation. The staff was incredibly kind and made us feel very much at home. A simple, rustic meal filled with immense flavors. Our sommelier was incredibly kind, taking the time time to explain the different natural wines they had. The pici with wild boar ragu was simply divine, robust flavor and the perfect cook on the pici. I would eat this every night if I could. There was also a special sticky toffee pudding that was a no brainer for us to get. We also got the tiramisu after seeing other reviews, it was absolutely perfect!

Yelp
Great place with slightly upgraded choices. Quiet. Relaxed atmosphere. We had the pappardelle with boar ragu, truffle pasta and linguine vongole. My husband had beef cheek. All were delicious. Highlight was really the boar ragu. This is traditional but we definitely had some bad versions. Service was very good. It's not far from tourist areas? But definitely not just a tourist place. Sister restaurant is Osteria del Cinghale Bianco.

Yelp
Love this restaurant! Congrats, Marco, on 6 successful years! Lovely atmosphere, excellent service, and food that is simply amazing! While there are countless restaurants in Florence, this is a must.

Yelp
Every traveler has their best-meal-in-Italy story, and this one is ours. It's definitely not easy for a restaurant to stand out because the food is so good at so many restaurants, but our dinner at Pavone made me realize all of the other ingredients to an all-around amazing experience. We started the usual find-a-restaurant shuffle earlier in the evening after crossing Ponte Vecchio, wandering, and stopping for gelato. Osteria del Pavone popped up in Yelp, and we walked over. It wasn't open yet, but the location was interesting - it was at the end of an alleyway, with a peacock over the doorway. We decided to come back around 730p, when they opened. They had a table, and we walked in past the bar, into a lovely dining room with a vaulted ceiling. We enjoyed some succulent bites of shrimp and octopus to start, followed by several amazing pasta dishes - pici with duck sauce and pappardelle with wild boar ragu. The gazpacho was cool and refreshing, perfect after a long day of wandering around Florence. Still having some space to sample another dish, we ordered spaghetti with tomato sauce, cooked to al dente perfection. I loved every bite of pasta that I ate. We ordered a couple of desserts - a wonderful tiramisu and the creamiest, smoothest panna cotta I've ever had. We'll be thinking about this meal for a long time - the interesting location, the beautiful dining room, the friendly staff, the superlative food (including desserts, and not over-ordering), and even a restaurant mascot - a wonderful, complete meal at the end of a long day of sightseeing.

Yelp
Deliciousness - 4.5/5 Happiness - 4.5/5 For those looking for a higher-end meal at a reasonable price for the high quality of food you get, look no further than this cozy restaurant tucked away down an alley across the Ponte Vecchio bridge. We went there and were greeted with a menu bursting with fare differing from the ubiquitous pasta and pizza. We started off with an exquisite appetizer of lightly roasted asparagus with a fried egg and truffle shavings. Truffles make everything wonderful, but this dish was basically perfection. All of the flavors worked incredibly well together and complemented each other to create a layered dish. I could order this plate every day for a month and not get tired of it. Our entrees were slightly under the quality of the appetizer, but still really great. My wife got a risotto that came with mini chocolate chips in it. The sweet and savory pairing was a true delight with modern flair. I tried a dish of roe deer. Less gamy than American venison, it was a fun new meat to experience even if it could have used a bit more spice to balance out the mellow flavor of the meat. They also have a great selection of natural wines (and plenty of Italian classic wines too). My wife and I split a bottle recommended by the restaurant's sommelier and were not disappointed. This really is a great place to experience modernized food and decor in Florence. Highly recommended.

Yelp
This was our first meal in Florence and it was INCREDIBLE. Tucked away in an alley in the heart of Florence - this restaurant is an absolute must. We ordered close to 7 dishes on the menu & every single one was magnificent. Our server Anna was attentive, knowledgeable, & kind. She recommended a great wine that paired well with the INCREDIBLE FOOD. Her service really elevated our dining experience! 10/10 recommend if you are visiting Florence!

Yelp
Food and ambience were very blah! The food seemed to have very little seasoning and some items were almost tasteless! Also, it was overpriced compared to other restaurants in Florence.
google avatar

Yelp
Best meal I've ever had! I'd return to Florence in a heartbeat. The food is fresh and we recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting the area.

Yelp
By far one of the best meals we had during our travels throughout Italy. Can you say truffle deliciousness?! Everything was absolutely incredible. The ambiance was just lovely, off a piazza in a cute ally. The service was impeccable. We were treated like family. My husband and I wanted to try a few dishes and split them, our waiter even had the kitchen perfectly split the dishes for us, to save us the trouble. Now for the food, we had all of the truffle goodness you can imagine. The dishes were bursting with flavor. The risotto had chocolate chips, sounds crazy, but it worked perfectly. We ended with the tiramasu. A perfect sweet ending to a delicious meal.

Yelp
From the time we entered Pavone until the time we left on our 2 dining experiences, we were treated like family. I have created my own six star club for exceptional experiences in food, service, ambiance. Osteria del Pavone is in that club. The location is perfect just a couple blocks from the ponte vecchio. The service was amazing. Not to slow. Even though they were extremely busy on both occasions. The food was incredible. Steak amazing. Truffle pasta, wow. I don't think we tried one dish we didn't enjoy. I even splurged and drank a bottle of 1998 Dom Perignon, juice from the gods. So without making this long and drawn out. Welcome to the. Star club Osteria del Pavone. You are a must do in my book. We will see you next year in Florence.

Yelp
Stopped in for pre-dinner drinks and really enjoyed sitting at the bar. Bartender took his time and put a lot into each drink and it showed. The amaretto sour was incredible, followed by negroni and espresso martini. The only one I wouldn't order again was the grapefruit mule - didn't taste much like a mule but it was still pretty good.

Yelp
The best meal we had in Florence! A charming, lovely and peaceful oasis just a few steps from the crowded streets of Florence. I had the Gragnano spaghetti with tomato sauce, burrata and basil - it was simple but so flavorful and delicious! I ate every last bit of it. My husband had risotto with shrimp and basil sauce and enjoyed it as well. Great wines choices. We were lucky to get a table since we just walked in off the street without a reservation. People who showed up shortly after us were turned away. Highly recommend it!

Yelp
This was our last night in Florence and the perfect place to celebrate our trip. How many times have you ever been greeted by name when arriving at a restaurant? Osteria del Pavone is a gorgeous restaurant inside, evoking the atmosphere of the Florentine palaces, and the food was just amazing, from the appetizers to desert. The staff made us feel extremely welcome and the sommelier tailored his suggestions to our preferences and selected food. We've had many nice restaurant experiences in Florence, but this one truly stands out. Just love it!

Yelp
On every trip to Florence this will always be where I eat my last dinner. It is truly special. The food is so incredible you will never forget it and remember Florence fondly because of it. Marco and his staff really show their passion for service the best that anyone can offer. I feel like family when I come here. Now I can't wait for my next trip back if only to come here.

Yelp
Wow! Where to start.... First, make a reservation. We tried going one night and the wait was over an hour. The place was packed! But we got smart and made a reservation for the second night and it was perfect. We spent hours there eating, drinking, and enjoying the food, wine, and staff. Expect to pay a nice bill here, especially if you are going to have appetizers, primis, secondis, dessert, and drinks. Wine: The wine selection is vast, so I recommend asking Primo a sommelier for suggestions based on what regions or flavors you like. He can find something to fit your taste and budget. We also tried an orange wine, which I'm not a huge fan of sweet wine but it wasn't super sickly sweet. It looks like a white wine with an orange hue. Almost smells and tastes like peach. It was a nice treat from the staff. Food: We had the beef tartar to start that came with two bruschetta. The flavors were fresh and clean - very tasty. Great to split between a couple. For the primis, we order these doughy spinach balls that were green - my apologies for not remembering the name. Not what I expected. But it was tasty. However, the lasagne was to die for!! it is not a red sauce lasagne, it was a white sauce with porcini mushrooms and truffle. It had flecks of good on it. It's truffle season right now in October so lots of food options in Italy with truffle. Highly recommend the lasagne. For the secondi, we split the beef fillet. We asked for medium rare and it was perfect! I mean absolutely perfect. The flavors and cook were perfect. Again, highly recommend. We then shared a cheese plate with another bottle of wine after dinner. Great way to end dinner before dessert. For dessert, we had the black and white. It was white chocolate and chocolate mousse or ganache. Omg! Delicious!!! And we had a glass of dessert sweet wine to pair with it. Overall, I highly recommend this place. For all of this, we paid ~€260. It's our honeymoon and we knew we wanted one nice dinner at least and this knocked it our of the park. Highly highly recommend stopping in here when in Firenze (Florence).

Yelp
In a hurry I used TripAdvisor to quickly find a restaurant that was still open at 10pm. This restaurant had wonderful reviews. As soon as I walked in I was greeted by the bartender, Filippo.I was alone so I decided to stay at the bar. So glad I did. I received wonderful service. The food and wine was absolutely delicious! Ambiance food and service was fantastic! I will definitely return when i'm in town.

Yelp
Excellent service and wonderful waiter for our party of 9! We had the best evening on our last night in Florence. Wonderful atmosphere! Thank you!

Jennifer K.

Yelp
For our last night in Florence we made a reservation at what we had hoped to deliver am amazing experience. Unfortunately, we were greeted by an extremely rude person named Primo who barked at us for being 15 minutes early. Then after we were seated schooled us on when we should order our food. Very disturbing. Over the course of the meal Primo became more friendly and things ended well bit it really made me sad our meal was disrupted early on

Yelp
Highly recommended. Great ambiance, great food and service. The octopus antipasti and the Speghetti Vongole were delicious.

Yelp
One of the best meals I have every had. Fantastic food, wine, and service. An absolute must in Florence.

Yelp
They were so nice to find a place for four without a reservation. The food was all incredible. Get the chateaubriand to share. You won't regret it.

Yelp
Fantastic food, service & drinks! Our party of 2 walked in at 7pm on a Friday night & were lucky to be seated right away. Our server was amazing, he held me back from ordering too much food, we ended up with just the perfect amount. He brought fabulous local wines & educated me on each one, he was attentive to what I liked & his service was spectacular. For dinner, we had the Florentine steak, salad & porcini mushrooms, all delicious. It was a lovely dining experience & I'm eager to go back for a future visit to Florence.

Yelp
Perfect Pavone...again! Another delicious visit with again, impeccable service. It was such a delight to finally return to Florence after two years away (Covid) and I was eager to spend another evening wining and dining at Osteria Del Pavone. I was surprised to find the same staff (excellent bartender, wait staff, and sommelier, Gianni). Such stability in a business that generally experiences a lot of turn around. It added a sense of "coming home" to a familiar table and family. Without really planning on it, I found myself ordering a few of the same dishes from my initial visit (the appetizer pictured, a delicious tender steak dish). I enjoyed all of it. Gianni especially was a highlight of my evening as he remembered me from a few years and we shared a few laughs and stories as he selected some unique wines to pair with my meal. Fantastic. I hope to keep Osteria del Pavone in my Florence experience with each visit. Grazie Osteria del Pavone!

Yelp
Got a tour of this place after eating at Osteria del Cinghisile Bianco. Marco, one of the owners, was nice enough to give us a tour and was very hospitable. Trendy new spot. We tried the limoncello and grappa after dinner, can't go wrong.

Yelp
This was an amazing experience. It is a universe moment when the food, wine, service, atmosphere, value, desert and company make the meal memorable. Presentation: 5 Taste: 5 Quality: 5 Quantity: 5 Aroma: 4 Wine: 5 -and Italian wines are not my top favorites Atmosphere: 5 Service: 5 -left the guy a hefty tip even though not needed in Europe Desert: 4 Parking: N/A Value: 5+ This was an amazing experience- thank you universe for being so kind to me as to enjoy such a great moment. Loved the location at the end of an alley.

Yelp
Amazing restaurant!!! Great location, the friendliest staff, owner and chef... and of course an amazingly delicious food!!!

Yelp
This is a very memorable restaurant in Florence! The food, place, and service were excellent. Every dish was a treat to the senses. For the appetizer, we got the liver pate and salad. For the pasta dish, we got ravioli with black truffles. For the main dish, we had chateaubriand which was sliced chairside by the chef. The wine selection was very good too! I would definitely come back here!!!
google avatar

Dave K.

Yelp
We had a great time here, great food, deep menu, friendly flexible service, reasonable wine list, good air conditioning, and full bar. After debating what to order a lot, the waiter came by and suggested some creative sharing options which worked out well (e.g., squash blossoms). He somewhat talked us into sharing a Florentine steak and we were glad he did -- although it looked almost inedibly rare, it was actually fantastic. Only downside, compared to some of the places we went is I'd say that this is the place Americans love to go to in Florence. Others had way more locals. But heck, they tune it just right for the Americans so why not go with the flow.
google avatar

Yelp
Dinner was simply magnificent. Atmosphere is elegant but comfortable, service is Michelin quality and the food was out of this world. Starters was a poached egg with Truffles, Crostini with caramelized onions and lard & Mozzarella heart with a caramelized onion sauce. Dinner was Florentine steak, truffle pasta and zucchini pesto Gnocchi. To finish off this gastronomic adventure we had Panna cotta with dates and Creme brûlée. Local super Tuscany wine complemented the whole meal. Hands down my favorite meal in Florence. Owner and his father, who owns the restaurant next door, are gentleman who make you feel like you are old friends. Must visit while in Florence.
google avatar

Natoya C.

Yelp
This place was very nice, definitely something to get dressed up for.. Service was excellent, atmosphere was classy. It's tucked away off a small side street, but easy to find with google maps. I had the fried egg with white truffles, and I will say that it was the best egg I've every had (but it came with a pricey tag).. once in a lifetime thing. Lol! I also had the Alpine style filet, and my date had the fettuccine with white truffle. Their wine selection is very nice, but we opted for their cocktails; which really focused on classic style cocktails such as Gimlets, Horses Neck, etc.. I recommend this place if you want something on the fancier side, with elegant service, and you're willing to splurge a bit.. Enjoy!

Lucy A.

Yelp
My new favorite restaurant in Florence! Last summer I went to their sister restaurant, Osteria del Cinghiale and we loved it so much we came back this year. We were told they opened up Osteria del Pavone so we tried it and absolutely loved it. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the wine list and reccommened us orange wine. The pasta was so good and the steak was the best I ever had! I HIGHLY reccommened this amazing restaurant!!!
google avatar

Greg C.

Yelp
One of the best dining experiences I've had in Italy. The atmosphere is quieter and more sophisticated than Osteria Chinghiale Bianco, it's sister restaurant; the food is still quality Tuscan, and staff is warm and attentive. The smaller menu and no frills dining progression is less like traditional Italian and more creative yet universally approachable so it is perhaps better fit for international diners who are not as used to eating antipasti, primo, secondo, and dessert in one sitting. I recommend the salmon tartare and the stuffed rabbit. Quality quality quality food and perfect portion size. Service was top-notch. Marco is an excellent manager and Tiziano was an informative and fun server. The sommelier, whose name escapes me, pointed us toward a wonderful bottle at an agreeable price that my family and I have not been able to find anywhere else.

Addie D.

Yelp
If you find yourself in search of a spectacular dinner in Florence, look no further than Osteria del Pavone. My boyfriend and I made a reservation a few weeks prior to our trip after reading all of the reviews and turns out it was just a few blocks from where we were staying. A+ experience all around -- the service was impeccable, the atmosphere was friendly, and we both agreed it might have been the best meal we'd ever eaten. We ordered the burrata with anchovy and truffle as a starter, the taglierini with black truffle and beef fillet Rossini as our main courses (both members of the clean plate club) and after a bottle of wine in, ordered the blue cheese and honey, and the cannoli's for dessert #noregrets. I'm not sure I've ever been quite so excited after eating a meal-- it was just really that good. It was definitely pricier than the other meal's we'd had in Florence but I think worth every penny. I mean, the sommelier had just opened a bottle of orange wine and came over to have us try it. You just can't go wrong with this place!

S H.

Yelp
Our group of 4 stumbled upon this restaurant tonight looking for a quaint local option in Florence. We found the sister restaurant and they ended up seating us in the more formal of the two. We were dressed a little casual for the atmosphere but you could not tell by our service. Food was still very reasonable and the best meal we have had in Florence. We ordered items mix and match from both restaurants and it was all exceptional. Highlight of the evening was the unexpected wine Suggestions from our waiter who was also the Sommelier. Highly recommend for exceptional meal and service in Florence.

Yelp
Wow! If I could give them ten stars, I would. The services from the call to reserve a table to walking out was AMAZING! It was a one of a kind experience that you rarely find anywhere in the world! They made us feel special and made dining fun! I made a last minute reservation and they got us in and sat us at a quiet table. Our waiter was also a sommelier so he made ordering and wine tasting a lesson in its' own. We started with mushroom salad with truffles and Parmesan cheese and a charcuterie plate. We ordered spinach dumplings with pesto, tortellini with black truffles and gnocchette with shrimp and asparagus pesto. We also got abruezzo wine which is organic grown without chemicals. We got a chocolate and vanilla Dessert (Forgot the name) with truffle oil, black truffles, sea salt and pepper paired with a dessert wine. Oh mmm so smooth - it made my mouth have an orgasm. Every bite was exquisite. How is this not a Michelin restaurant! Masterpiece! Every waiter thanked us as we left. It's a restaurant hidden from the hustle and bustle which is perfect. We'll return every time we're in Florence.

Yelp
Pricey restaurant for those who want a change from the heavy Nonna fare. Price is high and the service is perfect.

Linda A.

Yelp
We've been touring Italy for 2 weeks now and this is by far the best restaurant in which we've eaten! The dining room is gorgeous, like eating in a Medici palace. The service was incredible with superb recommendations for both wine and food, including off menu options. The dishes were artistic masterpieces, from concept to presentation to taste. If you'd like a truly gourmet and wonderfully attentive dining experience in Florence, this is the place.

S. C. C.

Yelp
Best new restaurant in Florence with sophisticated updates on classic dishes like ravioli made with lampredotto And craft cocktails. They really are trying to do something exciting and different with traditional florentine favorites.

Elena B.

Yelp
Fabulous! One of my favorites in Florence! Food and service was out of this world. Cocktails at the bar are awesome. The staff knows their wines and makes excellent choices that don't break the bank. Definitely going back.

Yelp
Are there last nite, excellent. Service outstanding. Try the zucchini blossoms a fresh porcini. You won't be disappointed

Kurt N.

Yelp
A great little place; make reservations. Had the flan with black truffle appetizer; outstanding. Great mixed salad. Salmon and the pasta with black truffles were very good. The chocolate flan (20 minute wait for it to bake) with pear sauce was scrumptious.

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
The food and service were amazing. Highlight of our honeymoon thus far! The drinks were amazing and the food was delicious as well. The green lasagna was a smaller portion compared to the soups and other entrees but still very tasty
