Yelp
Every traveler has their best-meal-in-Italy story, and this one is ours. It's definitely not easy for a restaurant to stand out because the food is so good at so many restaurants, but our dinner at Pavone made me realize all of the other ingredients to an all-around amazing experience.
We started the usual find-a-restaurant shuffle earlier in the evening after crossing Ponte Vecchio, wandering, and stopping for gelato. Osteria del Pavone popped up in Yelp, and we walked over. It wasn't open yet, but the location was interesting - it was at the end of an alleyway, with a peacock over the doorway. We decided to come back around 730p, when they opened. They had a table, and we walked in past the bar, into a lovely dining room with a vaulted ceiling.
We enjoyed some succulent bites of shrimp and octopus to start, followed by several amazing pasta dishes - pici with duck sauce and pappardelle with wild boar ragu. The gazpacho was cool and refreshing, perfect after a long day of wandering around Florence. Still having some space to sample another dish, we ordered spaghetti with tomato sauce, cooked to al dente perfection. I loved every bite of pasta that I ate.
We ordered a couple of desserts - a wonderful tiramisu and the creamiest, smoothest panna cotta I've ever had.
We'll be thinking about this meal for a long time - the interesting location, the beautiful dining room, the friendly staff, the superlative food (including desserts, and not over-ordering), and even a restaurant mascot - a wonderful, complete meal at the end of a long day of sightseeing.
