After days of meh to pretty good food, we happen upon Osteria Della Montanella and I was completely blown away. We ordered a lot of what folks mentioned on google maps: pasta with ragu, meat balls, croquettes with potato and provola and their EPIC spaghetti with octopus and I cannot stop thinking about it. Every dish was perfect and delicious and leaves you feeling like why would you not want this everyday of your life! And that’s just the food. The service was warm and very friendly. They only take reservations same day and if you get in, you get in. We got in. And on our last night in Naples. I would come back to Naples just to eat here again.

A True Hidden Gem in Naples Mattonella is one of those places that remind you why eating in Naples is such a joy. Tucked away from the main tourist paths, this is a genuinely authentic spot where locals come for honest, perfectly cooked Neapolitan food. The polpo (octopus) was exceptional — tender, flavorful, and simply dressed to let the freshness shine through. The melanzane alla parmigiana was comfort on a plate: rich, delicate layers with that perfect balance of tomato, mozzarella, and eggplant that only true home-style cooking can achieve. And the pasta — absolutely spot on, cooked al dente with bold, traditional flavors that speak of real Neapolitan soul. No frills, no gimmicks — just excellent food, warm service, and a sense that you’re eating in a piece of Naples’ culinary history. A must-visit for anyone who wants to experience the city like a local, not a tourist trap.

We arrived here late on a Saturday night, with no reservation. Lucky us, one of the table didn't arrived and after 10 mins we were offered a table. The food here is authentic, like cooked by a nona, very tasty and freshly made.

Naples has become really touristic and it's hard find places that have not become tourist traps. I would say that this is not exactly an exception since it's packed with tourists, but at least they keep the quality of the food high and the prices low, which is pretty much all that matters. We had gnocchi alla sorrentina (9 EUR) and pasta alla genovese (8 EUR). Both dishes were really good. Pasta super aldente, as it should be, and a good amount of meat in the genovese too. The coperto is 2 EUR per person which is a bit high, but at least you get some nice bread. The coffee was amazing, and of course served in a glass cup as the Napoletan law states. The staff was not very friendly, but not rude either. Just doing their job, which is fine. This osteria is really good and they have all the traditional dishes that you may want to try while visiting Naples. Definitely a good option when looking for traditional cuisine for good prices.

We stayed here for dinner. The place is fully booked so you should make a reservation in advance. Fortunately we still got a free spot the same day a couple of hours later. The food was amazing, the pasta was cooked perfectly al dente, the octopus was really soft inside, and the ragu was probably the best I've ever had. The service is also excellent, our order was taken fast and we didn't have to wait long for the food. The prices are very reasonable. The interior looks good and only has around five tables so it's a really calm setting. If you visit Napoli you should definitely try this place.

As someone originally from Naples, I’ve been to many osterie over the years, but Osteria della Mattonella stands out as a true classic. This time, my wife (from DC) and I were in town with two friends visiting Naples for the first time. I wanted them to experience a real, traditional Neapolitan meal—and this place delivered perfectly. We started with a fresh buffalo mozzarella and tomato salad, paired with marinated aubergines—simple but full of flavour and character. For our pastas, we shared the ragù napoletano and pasta alla puttanesca. The ragù was rich and deeply comforting, cooked exactly the way it should be, and the pasta itself was al dente perfection. For our mains, we shared meatballs and friarielli (Neapolitan broccoli rabe)—a classic combination that brought everyone to the table smiling. Everything was paired with a bottle of Valpolicella, which complemented the meal beautifully. The atmosphere was intimate, charming, and full of soul. You feel like you're stepping into someone’s home, where everything is made with love and tradition. The service was warm and attentive without being overbearing. This is the kind of place that reminds you why Neapolitan cuisine is so special. Highly recommended for anyone wanting an authentic experience. Make sure to book in advance very busy here, and we were lucky to get in

We went to this traditional restaurant in Naples and had some of the best pasta we’ve ever eaten in Italy! I had gnocchi with tomato sauce and cheese – simple and so flavorful. My husband had spaghetti with octopus, olives, and capers – also amazing. The pasta was high quality, perfectly cooked al dente, just how it should be. Great food, great vibe – nothing more to say, just go and enjoy! Ciao!

Such a cozy place. Reservations are required. They were nice enough to make room for us although we didn't have one. Highly recommend as it's also a little hidden and not in the busy loud area.

Yelp
While the historic centre overflows with pizza joints, the Spanish Quarter is the place to find traditional Neapolitan cuisine in unspoilt family run trattorias. Osteria della Mattonella, run by the La Marangio family, specialises in all the home cooked classics, but the restaurant itself is the real draw, decorated as it is in blue and green majolica tiles that have graced the walls since the 1700s. The pasta is made super traditional and taste a bit under al dente so be prepared. Just order anything that includes their homemade ragu. Great selection of wine and you'll love their Red. Cheers

Yelp
When we asked a tour guide/friend in Naples where to eat this was the place she told us to go. We called the same day and were able to get a reservation for that night and we are glad we did because the food is wonderful! The food here was so authentic and flavorful. We have visited Italy many times and this is one of the best meals we have had. Even though our Italian is very limited and it appeared the staff had fairly limited English, we were able to order with ease. If you are in Naples you cannot pass this place up.

Yelp
After walking around Napoli for 2 hours we were hungry and after skimming through some restaurants on Yelp we thought this one looked pretty good. However be aware of reservations during peak hours. Luckily with my boyfriend's Italian they were kind enough to let us in after 10 minutes wait. I don't believe I saw any tourists and if they were Italian so if you go be prepared to have Google Translate on you when speaking to the servers. We ordered beans in pasta and beans, ragu and courgette (neapoletain style) which I believe are some traditional dishes in Napoli. The service was wonderful and if we could we come back again.

Yelp
Good pasta. Great polpetti. Cute Neopolitan kitchen. Extra room downstairs. 2e table. Wifi.
