Osu Kannon

One of Nagoya's most tamous Buddhist temples, right by the lively Osu shopping district. It's dedicated to Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. I came here rainy Christmas day. There was chanting played via speakers. Along with the scent of incense, it was very peaceful experience. 🙏🏻

Osu Kannon is one of the temples we visited on our tour when we were in Japan. It was very comfortable when we were there. We can spend more time and relax there. Osu Kannon is pretty big. It seems to have more locals there than some temples do, which have more tourists.

As always, we stopped to pray for good fortune, wealth, and a safe journey. 🙏 The atmosphere was calm and welcoming, a peaceful contrast to the busy arcades nearby. We drew an omikuji (fortune slip) and received a chū-jō-kichi—a moderately good blessing from Kannon-sama, reassuring us that our trip would go smoothly. It gave us a comforting sense of clarity and peace. To carry the blessings with us, we also bought a protective omamori (amulet) for good luck and prosperity. 🍀✨ 🧘‍♀️ Highly recommended for a moment of reflection and spiritual grounding—especially if you’re already exploring the Osu area.

I didn't planned to go. But Shoutengai strees made me get there easily. 6/28/2025 they have frea market. Nagoya kinds. Also enjoy nearby street is good things to do. I bought 200yen candle to put.

Osu Kannon Shrine is a peaceful gem nestled in the heart of Nagoya’s vibrant Osu shopping district. With its striking red architecture and massive paper lantern, the shrine instantly invites curiosity and calm. Despite being surrounded by bustling shops and modern life, the moment you step onto its grounds, there’s a shift — a quiet, almost sacred stillness. Locals come to pray, offer coins, and draw omikuji (fortunes), while visitors often find themselves lingering longer than planned, soaking in the serene atmosphere. Pigeons flutter around the stone steps, and the scent of incense drifts through the air. Osu Kannon isn’t just a place to visit — it’s a place to pause, reflect, and feel connected to Nagoya’s spiritual roots.

The place is nice, but it was really crowded. There were many pigeons, and while the nature was beautiful, there was quite a bit of droppings that made it a bit dirty. But it's okay — overall, it's still a great place.

Another site to visit in Nagoya is this Buddhist Temple adjacent to the Osu Shopping District. We went there late in the afternoon. The pigeons that flock that place had already gone to roost for the evening. There were only a few devotees who lingered to pray. We took some photos of the temple before leaving the area.

I went here a few times during golden week. Definitely crowded, but manageable. You can try to go very early or much later in the day to avoid crowds. I love the temple and all the shopping here. At the temple, be sure to buy some incense and charms. Donate coins and pray as well if you feel inclined. Most things around here open at 10am. There's a cool morning antique market that happens once a month and we were able to explore that and haggle a bit! 🍀 I recommend the taiyaki place "Gin no An" and the takoyaki place right next to it (and the odango mochi place next to that!) 😉 Don't forget to explore the side streets, never know what you'll find.

Osu Kannon / Naka Ward (Nagoya) -- This may be Nagoya's primary Buddhist temple, but let's get real. Most people come here for the bustling shopping street (review: https://yelp.to/EcLfZCquN8). That's why Jamie W and I took an Uber from the train station. However, you might as well stop at the temple since you're already here. It's in fairly pristine condition for a structure that was erected in 1333. That may have to do with the various fires and WWII bombings that required periodic construction. Now it's the setting for festivals and parades throughout the year. If you're seeking tranquility here, you may get interrupted by the hundreds of pigeons that flock here (Photo 2). Beautiful shrine located in Nagoya. It is also near a shopping street, where you find vendors selling a variety of items. Recommended a visit when you are here.

Cute little temple. But we got turn away of the place the man said japanease only... am like heee ok bye

The problem with the temples is that after a while they start to lose their thrill. Still I was glad that we went to take a couple of photos.
