A Must-Do in Ouray! While planning our trip to Ouray, we came across The Alchemist Tour and were impressed by the glowing reviews—so we reached out through their website and booked a tour. When we arrived, we were greeted by Curt, who immediately made everyone feel welcome. To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but this tour far exceeded anything I could have imagined. It was absolutely amazing! Curt is not only incredibly knowledgeable, but also hilarious. He shares history in such a captivating, storytelling way that keeps you fully engaged from start to finish. If you’re visiting Ouray and looking for something unique and memorable, this tour is an absolute must. Don’t miss it!

We toured the museum in the off-season in november, so we had a private tour. I booked ahead of time via email, which is recommended (either email or phone). Curt explained that he is a retired pharmacist who started collecting privately and eventually turned it into a full-blown museum of alchemy. Curt has a passion for life and loves what he does! He is a wealth of knowledge and loves sharing through stories, pictures, and artifacts. The tour is 2-3 hours long, so be sure to wear comfy shoes and allot extra time, but know that you will be entertained the entire time! Curts brilliant mind houses a lifetime of engaging facts to share about the fascinating history of alchemy...our minds were blown!

Great Experience. Kurt was very knowledgeable and entertaining. Great history lesson and so many interesting things to see about the history of alchemy and pharmaceuticals. Would definitely recommend.

A Fascinating and Memorable Experience at the Ouray Alchemist Museum We had the incredible opportunity to take a private tour of the Ouray Alchemist Museum with the owner and collector, and it was an experience we’ll never forget. As a nurse and homeschooling family, we’re always on the lookout for educational experiences that bring history to life, and this visit exceeded all our expectations. The museum’s collection is absolutely stunning, showcasing centuries of fascinating history related to medicine and pharmacy. Every single item we pointed out came with a rich and engaging story, told with so much passion and knowledge by the owner. His ability to connect each artifact to its historical context was incredible, and it made the experience both educational and entertaining. What made the visit even more special was the kindness and attention shown to my daughter, who is autistic. He made her feel welcome and included, which meant the world to us. His warmth and enthusiasm did not go unnoticed. We were amazed by the depth and variety of the collection and found ourselves wishing we could have spent more hours there, soaking in all the history and stories. Visiting the museum was the perfect way to start a beautiful snowy morning in the charming town of Ouray, Colorado. If you have the chance to visit, I highly recommend booking a private tour it’s worth every penny. This museum is truly a hidden gem and a must see for anyone who loves history, storytelling, or unique collections.

I had been wanting to check this place out for a while and was finally able to when my brother came to visit. I highly recommend scheduling your tour ahead of time with Curt. He is very quick to respond. It's a one man show and did take a bit of time to get the full tour, but it was very worth the trip. Curt is quite the character, and has plenty of stories, history, humour and passion for his museum. There are so very many artifacts and displays. We were there several hours, and I'm positive we didn't see everything. So make sure you stop in to check it out if you get the chance and experience this impressive, one-of-a-kind collection yourself. You will definitely learn something new and have a great time.

Google
Lovely little museum with an absurd amount of beautiful antiques and artifacts. Curt has a wealth of knowledge and he managed to give a fascinating tour, connecting pieces of an often overlooked part of history. I feel like I could go here every time I visit Ouray and still learn something new.

This museum is a real gem. I gained such a knowledge of the history of pharmaceutical drugs through the ages, the architecture and interior design, collections of everything pharm was amazing. The owner, a pharmacist, was so knowledgeable and entertaining. This is a must see place in Ouray. It’s best to call the number listed to make a reservation. The tour is 2 hours.

Google
Curt is amazingly knowledgeable and gives you quite the tour of the history of alchemy, pharmacy, and medical practices. The only reason I took off a star is that we expected an hour long tour and were there for more than two hours. So make sure to plan your time accordingly, as we had to cut short other stops as a result. But if you have any interest in the topics listed above, call to confirm the tour is happening and spend some time with Curt. He says he’ll be there until he’s 103 1/2 so you’ve got some time 😁

Yelp
Hours listed are not accurate. We drove to check out this museum buy to find it closed despite it showing open on Yelp. Business is closed unless you pay a $20/person fee for a tour.

Yelp
Bottom Line: A unique and quirky museum featuring a carefully curated collection of pharmacy memorabilia and artifacts. I love American history, Americana, weird history and local museums so I was eager to check out the Ouray Alchemist. The Ouray Alchemist is a small museum that only offers private tours and storytelling about Wild West pharmacies. To visit the museum you must call or email ahead to schedule your visit. The admission fee is $12. The tour duration can range from an hour or more but if you have limited time you can let the museum know. Curt, the owner and a retired pharmacist, has spent his lifetime collecting, and restoring where appropriate and necessary, artifacts related to pharmacies in the 1800s Wild West and particularly Colorado. His collection is incredible! My jaw dropped multiple times. I was impressed with the entrance to the museum which is from an c. 1888 Aspen drugstore but I was also impressed with the volume of artifacts and the many antique mercantile displays. Two things that really caught my eye were two sets of antique drawers for selling spools of thread and two soda fountains. The one soda fountain in particular was incredible . . . it had been fully restored to working condition. The marble and chrome (presumably) front of the soda fountain was like a work of art. As a lover of history and museums I really enjoyed this visit as did my husband. But for those who aren't into guided tours or lengthy museum visits, this might not be the best choice in Ouray. Also, I wouldn't recommend it for kids because its almost like a lengthy show-and-tell but don't touch type of experience. The museum also has a small gift shop and they sell products for high altitude adjustment.

Yelp
One of my all-time favorite pastimes is to spend time listening to anyone who has a passion for something and a compelling way to tell that something's story. Today, I enjoyed the company of Curt, who owns the Ouray Alchemist Museum. Two hours of a personal tour around his amazing collection of all things alchemy barely scratched the surface of his knowledge. He kept asking if I was bored. I kept encouraging him to go on. Brilliantly fascinating, and clearly a labor of love. Also, I cannot believe the frequency by which people ingested arsenic, opium, heroine, chloroform, laudenum, lithium, mercury and lead as a matter of common pharmaceutical practice. Do not hesitate to take this tour!

Yelp
I know it can be kind of off-putting to have to actually request a tour in advance, especially for people who are more "spur-of-the-moment" type vacationers, but trust me, this place is worth it. There are few places where you can see how much love and enthusiasm for the subject have gone into setting up a space and lecture, but this is one of them. Curt, the owner, has been a pharmacist for decades and has really turned the Ouray Alchemist into his passion project. For a low entry fee, you and your group will be treated to a lecture on the history of alchemy, snake oil salesmen, the origins of current medicine, and the politics behind many things we are familiar with today. There are some amazing items to see here and, even if there wasn't a lecture, the admission price to see this stuff would be worth it. Make the time to see the Ouray Alchemist and you won't regret it.

Yelp
Super fun tour through pharmacy history with a very pleasant gentleman who knows a lot about apothecaries and drugs. The collection here is really special, so many things you will never see anywhere else. Original pieces from drugstores of the past, snake oil posters, original bottles, paintings, pull making equipment. He even demonstrates how a pharmacist would prepare a medication 100+ years ago. There's also a history lesson on how drugs have been developed over time with lots of interesting anecdotes and insights. Definitely worth checking out when you're in town. Very unique and engaging.

Yelp
Nothing shy of amazing. To be able to experience actual historical artifacts and have them explained in a personal and dynamic way. Where in the museum the curator knows the history and acquisition of each artifact, and should since it is his personal collection. Beyond that Kurt does such an exquisite job passing down the history from yesteryear (an expert in his own field) bringing it all full circle to the present day. This was for sure a history museum highlight. I would not recommend this to everyone, why, I believe it would be throwing "pearls to pigs". This was way above the average museum experience, it has a personal touch as Kurt interacts, explaining, and entertaining your questions. This is a gift to those who love the way of old, and appreciate the veracity of history passed by oral tradition. Most excellent!

Yelp
We had a wonderful tour of the Ouray Alchemist. My gf actually gasped when Curt opened the inner door to the Alchemist museum. It's like entering a time capsule. We really enjoyed the tour that Curt gave, it was like a whirlwind historical tour of the ages through the lens of alchemy. I learned so much about the intersection of alchemy, pharmacy & medicine, as well as Curt's own story as a traveling pharmacist based in Colorado. There are so many historical treasures in this museum - being able to see them all was a real treat. Make sure you call ahead to confirm that a tour is happening!

Yelp
Do the tour. Kurt is amazing and extremely knowledgable about the history of medication and pharmacies. Well worth it. You get taken into the back room and go back in time. A must!

Yelp
What a fantastic trip back in time to the days of snake oil salesmen and before. Curt did a fabulous job of weaving various facts into fact-filled yet highly-entertaining stories that kept our attention throughout the two hours. He skillfully displayed numerous objects from his extensive collection of alchemy and pharmacy that made his presentation further tangible. Don't miss his tour before it's too late!

Yelp
What a fascinating fun "tour." Kurt has a story for each of the many items he has collected over the years. We didn't just learn about wild west medicine but the history of medicine from the beginning! Fun, educational and very persoonable.

Yelp
Thank you Kurt for sharing a few minutes of your time and wonderful collection with me and my daughter. Your breadth of knowledge and passion for all things Alchemy is readily appreciated and infectious! (No pun intended) I've looked forward to visiting the Alchemy museum and I must say, it did not disappoint! If you have any interest of history, medicine or enjoy the company of good people, then a visit with Kurt and the Alchemy museum is a must! A gem of Ouray.

Yelp
We took the tour at the Ouray Alchemist when we were visiting in November. It was a blast! He has an amazing collection and is a natural story teller. The tour lasted about an hour and it seemed to fly by. He clearly has a very inquisitive nature and really engaged with my girlfriend and I as we asked tons of questions about many different topics. Kurt loves what he does and we will definitely be stopping in to say hi next time we are in town. Don't miss it if you are passing through!

Barbara B.

Yelp
'll start by saying that even though I marked this as us having our small children (2, 5, and 10) with us, it isn't the best for small children. It was about two hours and there are a lot of expensive and glass items in the shop. I could tell that the owner was worried it wouldn't work out but he was very accommodating and willing to try. We got lucky that our kids decided to behave wonderfully! My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this tour! Curt is very knowledgeable and keeps your attention. For 3 young children to behave and listen has to say something! We learned so much about the history alchemy and could have stayed there all day asking him about every little piece he had in the shop! I would definitely love to come back and do the tour again just my husband and I.

Yelp
Cools shop with a museum in the back. They guy he collected a lot of different things and seems to know the history on all of them. They also rent a room.

Yelp
This was an excellent day for us in Ouray. The tour is amazing as Kurt takes you through time on a world tour of medicine and alchemical history. Great fun. Excellent shop and museum

Yelp
As a pharmacist, I can say Kurt has an incredible knowledge of the history of pharmacy as well as an extensive collection of rare pharmacist tools. It was truly a pleasure to partake in a tour that highlights the complicated and colorful history of our industry. Thanks so much for your time, energy, and effort Kurt!
