I Flew on the Only Nonstop Route From the West Coast to the Caribbean—Here's What It Was Like

"Thanks to a recently launched route from Cayman Airways, between Los Angeles and Grand Cayman, the West Coast now has nonstop flight access to the Caribbean. The new route, which began in November 2022, flies nonstop from LAX’s Tom Bradley International Airport into Owen Roberts International Airport on Grand Cayman. Currently running the year-round route once a week in each direction, the airline plans to eventually add two to three weekly services."

I had a really great experience at this airport! I arrived on Friday around 1:00 pm, and breezed through security in only about 10 minutes. When it was time to leave on Tuesday, we got to the airport two hours before our 1:00 pm flight and were through security in just about 5 minutes—super quick! It might have had something to do with the days and times we traveled, but overall, everything was great. I didn't check out the food options, so I can't speak to that, but I still had an easy and good experience!

Different food options. Playground for small kids. AC is minimally working. Nursing suite too. Jet blue being as annoying as always setting an arbitrary weight limit on luggage below 47-48 lbs and not letting move stuff from one luggage to the next.

It's a great airport to fly into. The handlers at Island Air are fantastic. Clearing customs on the private ramp have always been very smooth. They even stay for our arrival after midnight.

Fairly quick passing through customs upon arrival. Departing took much longer than expected. There is no TSA pre check here. General security for everyone. If lines are super busy and you are not alone I recommend after checking your passport for one of your group to stand in security line while you check in. There was live music as well, which was really nice

Only getting stars off because of security. 1. On way in: They went thru every inch of our bags to check for … I think drugs? It felt like a major violation of privacy. Every inch of every bag of ours. Never experienced that before. 2. On way out: Rude. Disorganized. And - worst of all - forced my wife to throw out a ton of makeup. Why? Because they have this rule that all makeup has to fit into one small plastic clear bag. This wasn’t told to us until we arrived at the end of the security line. My wife is used to bringing her makeup in her carryon because no other airport has had this rule in our experience. It wasn’t just my wife - virtually every woman around us was going through the same thing. I don’t know if the workers enjoy it because they get to take home all these products or what, but the ones we spoke to were very unkind. So, BE SURE TO PACK ALL MAKEUP IN YOUR CHECKED BAG!!! At least they should have told us about this odd rule at the check in counter. Ideally they’d just act like every other airport and not have the rule at all. And at the very least, they shouldn’t have been so rude about it all.

Small airport but easy access to the gates and planes. Check in process went fairly quick and security kept up at a good pace. Not too many food options inside the gate.

I hate this airport!! I feel like I’m being profiled! I been here many times to see family. 90% of the time they stop me ask me a million questions then send me to get my things checked!! It’s a pure violation of privacy! I’m sick of being treated like this! Why ask me if I have anything just to search me anyway! Then they Ask you about everything in your bag! You bring lotion.. why you bringing lotion?? Like really! Every black person that comes here is not a drug dealer!! This needs to stop!

Clean, quiet and most of all they have a toddler child play area. Literally the best to have in an airport when traveling with little ones.
