This marked my 14th summer ending the week at Owens. As someone who married into an OBX family, Owens has always been on the itinerary. My FIL has been dining there for over 60 years. Unfortunately, our experience at the newly taken over restaurant has ended this annual family tradition. We were warned that the wait time for the meal was close to 2 hours and the food was sub par over the Memorial Day holiday, but still we chose to keep our reservations. (6pm) A nice meal isn't meant to be rushed in my opinion. Let me begin by saying our server was very friendly and was clearly stressed when the night began. Next to us, was a large party of 18 who was being taken care of by another server. We ordered before they did and I was happy because I knew their order would slow down the kitchen. We got our drink orders and appetizers quickly. After that however, we waited over an hour & 45 mins for our dinner. We had ordered a large bowl of the clam chowder, a Caesar salad with grilled chicken, the squid ink lobster ravioli & the snapper daily special. In the time we waited for our meal, the 18 top got their meals, dessert & paid. The 4 top next to us turned twice. Another 6 top ate and paid. The server came by every 15 mins to assure us the food was coming, but we continued to wait. I do not blame this experience on the server. He was clearly hung out to dry by the manager. The manager should have been out on the floor, checking ticket times at expo & ensuring that their staff is supported. When the food finally came, the lobster ravioli was cold & my husbands snapper was so rubbery, he couldn't cut it with a knife. He sent the dish back and we decided it was time to call it a night.
My MIL asked to get a manager over to our table, and when he talked with us, he blamed the issues on the waiter, and kept reminding us it was "July 5th" busiest night of the season, even though the dining room was half full. If he could've, it felt like he wanted to tell us "bless your heart", and if you've spent any time in the south, you know what I mean.
When we were leaving there was a paper taped to the hostess desk saying the broiler & grill broken. IF they had been honest about the problem, we would have understood and likely ordered something else, but the lack of communication and overall aloofness of the manager really disappointed us. I'm sorry it had to end this way.
