I've stayed in better hostels, but I've also definitely stayed in worse.
Oxford Back Packers, the "funky hostel," is located near both Gloucester Green bus station and the rail station, and is also not too far of a walk from the city centre, so it's pretty convenient. The rooms were okay, not spotless, but not too gross... although, my travel buddy was a little suspicious that her sheets hadn't been washed. The beds weren't very comfortable, but really, what hostel beds are? The bathrooms weren't too bad - there was some hot water, and the loos as a whole weren't too dirty. The staff weren't overly friendly, but they also weren't rude, and tended to be available if people had questions. We didn't try out the bar/common area, but it seemed popular with the other guests.
Basically, a "meh" experience overall. Certainly cheaper than a B&B, but not the most enjoyable place to stay. Bonus points for their creativity with decorations.
