We really enjoyed this hotel as a family of 5. They were so lovely and friendly, greeting us with special bags of sweets for our kids, arranging a family room with a separate room for adults on a mattress and futons on tatami mats for the kids, providing yakatas for everyone and tea, coffee, sake, and mesh unavailable for all! The hot springs baths were a fun experience for all and easy to enjoy with clear instructions. The staff dinner recomendations were great, and the breakfast was amazing. They had origami and toys for kids and were very knowledgeable about the area. Highly recommend this spot! It’s quite easy to walk around the town and very close to the station!

I have stayed here for 3 days, and what I found unfair is that I constantly saw two young lady staff members carrying guests' backpacks - some of which were clearly oversized for their bodies - while the other staff members simply watched, and sometimes even handed them additional bags to carry. The service and breakfast were also unimpressive compared to nearby hotels. In fact, many of them offer more spacious rooms with kitchenettes for only half the price.

Stayed at Oyado Koto no Yume, to see what the ryokan fuss is all about. It’s a moderate sized hotel, but we saw no Japanese tourists over the course of our two-night stay. Just foreigners milling about, wearing yukatas most of the time. So, if you go in there expecting luxury you might be disappointed (as some people seem to have been); instead, the high prices you’re paying are for a chance to dress up and play at being Japanese.||The aesthetic is nice and the location convenient.||The staff is polite, as others have pointed out. But the hotel does have a huge number of rules and regulations, as also has been pointed out. Over multiple trips to Japan, this was the only place where we were asked to bring down our bags the day before we checked out so that the bags could be measured for shipping to the next hotel. The ostensible reason was that it would be very crowded next day at check-out time. But when we came down with our bags the next morning, there was nobody else checking out.

The welcome and the attention to detail were absolutely faultless - in short, the staff couldn't have done any more for us ... always attentive, super-courteous & flexible. We simply adored this hotel, which was by some distance the 'pick of the crop' during our fortnight or so in Japan. Not fussy or ostentatious - and it doesn't need to be as its high-quality offering is beautifully put together.

Location: Excellent, just 5-8 mins walk from Takayama bus & train station Osaka Airport(Save on taxi fares) just have to really pull your luggages during heavy winter time. Checkin: Smooth and seamless(Great attitude from the front desk) Room condition: 7/10 Room was traditionally designed as it is a ryokan, room is spacious. During cold winter, the aircon could not warm the whole room especially the sofa area leading to the toilet. Toilet: 6.5/10 Practical toilet facility and was very cold as it is not a heated room but just have to tolerate during winter. Bed: 6.5/10 Futon not the most comfortable feel and pillows were too soft and dont have other types of pillows to suit the different needs of travelers, we did try other places where the futons were more comfortable. Room amenities: 8/10 Kettle, local sweets were available, could get essential oil at night to scent the room and also to get free sake at night at the lobby area and a jug of ice water and 2 bottled water in the room, daily. Hotel Amenities: Hot public baths separated for males & females, couple baths were available for booking. Great to use after a long day of walking. Service level of staff: 9/10 Definitely helpful and always explaining with a smile and assisting us on our queries. Provided Origami paper and to thank them for their outstanding level of service, we did get the staff treats and they were so nice to return back small gifts in appreciation. Every evening, our futons are made up by them and in the morning, they will pack it back for us when making up our rooms.

Stayed there with as a family of 3. While I really wanted to like the ryokan due to the warm service and great feedback from friends, my own experience was a bit disappointing. We have stayed in many traditional ryokans prior to this and were familiar with the setup. We are appreciative with the warm service and sincere touches; like candies at check in, but the ryokan itself is really quite old and in need of a refresh. Our room is tucked away in a corner and required us to go down a small flight of stairs to reach. I am not sure if the location meant that is a bit colder than the rest of the rooms but we really did feel cold and the heating was inadequate. The in built heater would also stop and beep in the middle of the night, which led 2 of us falling sick at the start of the trip. We requested for a additional small heater which helped a bit. Second night, our 9yo son also got many mysterious bites all over his leg. He claimed to have seen a bug crawl under the tatami mat but we were not certain and therefore did not feedback to the ryokan as we only had one more remaining night to go. We had only stayed 1 night in nagoya's marriott associa hotel prior to our ryokan visit, and his skin improved after we left Takayama, leading us to think that it might have been the stay there.

My first time staying in a Japanese ryokan, and it was an amazing experience. The staff were highly efficient, spoke excellent English, and were incredibly helpful throughout my stay. My room was surprisingly spacious for a traditional guest house, although the facilities were a bit dated, and the air conditioner made a funny noise. Despite that, everything else was perfectly satisfying. The staff set up the futon for me, and it was incredibly comfortable—I didn’t want to get out of bed the next morning! The breakfast was generous and featured a variety of delicious traditional Japanese dishes. Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and I will definitely return and stay longer next time.

The hotel is very old and has a musty smell. You can find many better hotels with better service for only half the price. I think it’s overrated.

Yelp
A bit of a western-feel ryokan geared toward tourists. Walking distance from train station and walking distance to old town and Takayama festival. Very friendly staff. Very fairly priced. Clean and comfortable. Breakfast (Western and Japanese) was served in a main dining area. Yukatas were provided. Small gift shop on the main floor with lots of cute stuff that is reasonably priced. Communal rock onsen was pretty cool too. Traditional tea and sweets provided while you sit and get checked in. Laundry services were free of charge with new machines but difficult to use since all the buttons were in kanji. However, when I asked for help from one of the ladies making up the rooms, she quickly ran off and brought back an English speaking lady that helped me figure out how to work the machines. Everyone working here was so helpful and sweet. We left a blanket in our room when we checked out and in passing mentioned where we were heading and the next day our blanket appeared at our new ryokan. Now that's the kind of hospitality and genuine care that is hard to find outside of Japan. It may not be the most serene and beautiful ryokan but they try really hard to make this an enjoyable experience and pleasant stay for their tourists and you really can't beat the price.

Yelp
Incredible Ryokan... first visit in Takayama. We were greeted by staff, they were super polite. We spoke for a good 15 mins over provided tea and pastries. It was a very warm and comfortable feeling. Laundry service is free. And, our futons are spread out every night and put away the next day. They also offer breakfast ( both eastern and western) for an extra fee. Highly recommended.
