The Tallest Active Volcanoes in the World You Can Actually Climb | Condé Nast Traveler

"A favorite for volcano-trekking beginners and thrill-seekers near Antigua, Pacaya’s trail climbs through lush forest to jagged lava fields where glowing hotspots occasionally peek through—perfect for roasting marshmallows on heated rocks; guides lead the relatively short (2.5 to three hours round trip) ascent, explain the geology, keep you on stable ground, and deliver vivid payoff in scorching earth, volcanic views, and occasional steam bursts." - Hana Al-Khodairi

Okay We did the Pacaya Volcano Luxury Sunset Horseback Riding Tour/ Dinner Cooked by-Lava Chef excursion. Overall the experience was not what we thought it would be as we have done a similar excursion in Costa Rica at arsenal volcano (minus the pizza). For us, it was overpriced and we didn't appreciate the additional messages prior to the excursion asking us to tip cowboys (we would have regardless, but felt it was uncouth) especially since it already close to $800 for the excursion. What really ruined it though was when I told the cowboys that neither I nor my husband wanted to ride the horse with the Confederate flag and were ignored. The entire duration of the trip we responded to inquiries about the flag (some laughing others shocked) and we were very upset. We did outreach to the owner and she apologized and indicated she was not aware however the flag appeared as if it had been on the horse for a while and ultimately the owner should have been aware. Overall the experience was okay, we loved the views, the pizza was okay, the driver was nice but the actual ride was ruined and it was extremely expensive... With tip close to 1k.

It was truly an amazing experience to climb and reach to the top of the Pacaya volcano. The view was incredible, especially at night. Highly recommend visiting this beautiful place

Very cool hike and lookout point to the Pacaya Volcano. This hike is a workout, which I enjoyed. Just be sure that you are prepared for a long uphill hike. Also, you can rent a horse to get to the top if you get tired.

The tour itself was good. Pick up/ drop off and the trip great. The hike was marked as moderate difficulty. Obviously it is not the same as US national parks medium difficulty. It is much harder/ straight up incline at places. It was fun

Must see!!!! The hike up the volcano was challenging to say the least, a lot of inclines and uneven trails. We were adamant about not wanting horses but most of us ended up getting one at some point. The views are unbelievable, the pizza at the top was superb and again, the views! The hike down was much easier, we opted to walk and did so without any issues. Our guide Carlos was the best! It was worth every dollar and the experience was indescribable.

Amazing experience! I traveled here a few years ago and it was one of the best places I’ve ever been to. The hike is strenuous but worthy!
