6 Best Day Trips from San Francisco | Condé Nast Traveler

"Whether you want to explore Monterey by bike, surrey (sort of a pedal-powered car), kayak, or stand up paddleboard, Pacific Grove Adventures has the right means of transportation for you. Arriving at the Pacific Grove Adventures' office, you might think it looks familiar. It should—one of the filming sites for HBO's Big Little Lies is Lover's Point Beach, where the shop is located. The little cove might be idyllic with its blue waters and surrounding cliffs, but it's unfortunately always way too crowded. So grab your bike, and head off to go see the quieter beauty of Monterey." - Ana Kamin, Jenna Scatena

Google
Loved it! Definitely visit this place, you get a chance to see amazing wildlife up close, enjoy clear blue waters and have a relaxing time using well maintained kayaks. The icing on the cake was the staff, Corey. A calm and collected individual who was super knowledgeable about kayaks, animals, and weather patterns in Monterey. He pushed the kayak in and helped pulled the kayak out of water and even provided fresh water to wash our water shoes. 💯 recommend this place. Note: we kept safe distance from animals, all photos are with zoom lens.

Rented bikes and a Burley trailer bicycle attachment for our toddler and it was great! Friendly and helpful staff and reasonable pricing. Nice stretch of flat road along the water to ride along.

Google
It was a great experience, very helpful staff, Cory was amazing helping me figure out what I wanted to do. He showed me the way. I love this place because there is something for everyone. Equipment was clean and useful. Even with a busy day we didn't wait long and the prices are outstanding. Thank you for making our Adventure By The Sea UNFORGETTABLE!

Google
We rented wet suits as well as boards The service was excellent, he helped us get into the suits and also offered to watch our things when we were in the water We had a wonderful time definitely coming back in the summer

Google
Great rates and nice bikes! Also appreciated the tips on where to go for cool pictures. The 17 mile scenic road is only about 2 miles from the store.

Google
I had always jogged or rode my bike along the pathway. I took out a kayak today. Experiencing this this.costal area from the ocean was amazing! Get your kayaks, bikes, 4 wheel pedal machine for the whole family, surf and boogie boards, electric assisted bikes, friendly, knowlegable staff. They'll get you set up. Beautiful kayak experience. Adventures by the Sea has three rental facilities alone the costal trail in Monterey and Pacific Grove so easy to find and engage with the area in fun ways. ,

Google
Rave reviews for Pacific Grove Adventures and crew member Nathan! Our group of 15 had a reservation at the Lover's Point location and the full crew was amazing! The reservation process and group pricing was great. On the day of, they had all the gear set up and ready upon our arrival. All the crew members were great, and specifically Nathan was a HUGE help to our group. After your team gave us instructions and geared up, we started loading up on the kayaks and hitting the water, Nathan decided to jump in his own kayak to make sure our group got off safely. Soon after we took off, one the kayaks flipped over and Nathan quickly paddled out to them and got them all situated and back up ready to go quickly and calmly. He did a great job calming them down and getting them back on to their kayaks (again) to continue their adventure. Thank you again for the opportunity to kayak and for your well trained staff. It made it a fun and memorable experience for all of us.

Hi Mom

Google
MUST GO for adventure in Pacific Grove. Colorful and comfortable bikes. Friendliest service and convenient spot to pick up/drop off bikes.

Yelp
Great experience riding the 6 seater surrey. We had so much fun doing this. Checking in was quick; the kids were provided helmets. We were given a super quick tutorial on pedaling, braking and using the lock. It was nice there was a basket up front to put our bags. Four people could pedal at a time; we had 6 of us, but 2 of our group were tweens, so we fit fine. We pedaled for 2 hours, stopping at a few scenic points, made it to Fishermans Wharf, walked around there for a little while, and then pedaled back. Having stronger pedalers up front made a big difference. Overall a very fun ride through Monterey, would 100% do this again.

Yelp
Whispering Pine pools are awesome wish they would open up a lil earlier than 2-7 got swimming hoe smoky the water park I'm not sure on the hours got this but I'm Trying to find out thank you nancy

Yelp
Overall very easy to rent! Good quality equipment. Wish there had been baskets on the bike. My son really wanted to ride an electric bike but was not old enough. That would have been helpful as there were a few hills in the area. Friendly staff and reasonable pricing. Plus they were listening to Pearl Jam, so you can't go wrong here.

Yelp
My family and I rented the large surrey for two hours. There were three of us (my mother, my 17-year-old brother, and myself), and although the regular-sized surrey claims to fit three people and the large surrey claims to fit six people, I am pretty sure that only applies if you are riding with small children because I could not imagine a regular-sized human sitting in the middle seats. I am glad that we got the large surrey! However, it was extremely difficult to peddle at times, and there were not any uphill climbs, so make sure that everyone is prepared to do their part and pull their own weight! Nevertheless, this is a great family/bonding activity, we were laughing at ourselves the entire time! Be cautious if you are tall! I am 5'11, my brother is 6'2, and my mom is 5'7, and we all hit our knees on the bars at LEAST once, and trust me, you will feel it throughout the day. Taller people should ride in the front since there is more room, even so, don't mindlessly pedal crazy fast because you WILL hit your knees and it WILL pain you.

Yelp
Amazing company, the owner is very friendly and thoughtful. We had a fall in our group, and he came to our location to pick us up and made sure we were alright. Stop by and rent some bikes here!!
google avatar

Julia Z.

Yelp
Love the surrey tour. Staff are very nice and helped us to set up. The trail is beautiful with the great ocean view. The we can stop at the cannery row for shopping and leisure walk. Our 2 yo and 5 yo fit well in the front basket. Be aware to let the kids dress warmly bc the front takes all the wind. The way back is slightly uphill but the entire family had great fun!
google avatar

Yelp
My wife and I rented kayaks here. Only one staffer on a weekday, but he was super nice, helpful and efficient. Had a amazing paddle. Saw several harbor seals, and an amazing group of about 15 sea otters. The shoreline is particularly beautiful in this area too. Great experience!
google avatar

Cindy Y A.

Yelp
Yes, we went here on the weekend before the Shelter in Place order went out on 3/16/20! Had a wonderful experience. The salesperson was helpful, gave helpful instructions, recommended the bikes he felt would work best for the persons renting. Just a helpful suggestion: If your party is larger than 2, don't mix electric and normal bike rentals! The reality is that electric bikes can go much faster and your party will be, err, held up, by the slowest person on a manual bike. The white bikes are WAAAY faster than the black electric bikes so if you want to feel as if you don't even need to pedal, rent the white bikes, ha, ha!! The black bikes do provide electric assistance but they feel much more like a regular bike at the low assistance levels. Have fun!
google avatar

James C.

Yelp
Slow to get our kayak because they only had one poor guy working there. Uncomfortable sit in kayak. One person kayak is a lot faster. Good views, saw birds and even seals! My dad even saw a dolphin. Overall good. P.S. Don't hit your funny bone on kayak. It really hurt.
google avatar

Kathleen C.

Yelp
Loved it!! Sorry to the staff, brought my bratty little sister who didn't want to wear her helmet but she eventually did.
google avatar

Tim K.

Yelp
Terrific place to rent a bike (which we did), kayaks, paddle boards and other recreational fun things. Mike, Operations Director, was terrific. He gave us all the assistance and guidance we needed. Very friendly and easy folks to deal with. Fair prices, good quality products.
google avatar

Sagruilla P.

Yelp
Even though this business has a bit of a monopoly for kayak, bike, and scuba rentals, they have always had good service and fair prices. We used to rent bikes and go along the coast, stopping where we may. The ride is very safe, and the bikes are kept in good condition. Now with little kids, we rent the surreys, which are a challenge to bike, but still so fun and silly. A one-hour rental was just right to get from Lovers Point to Fisherman's Wharf, with a little bit of hustling. One day we'll all be able to safely bike together, but until then, we'll get our scenic workout with the surrey. The people who work at all of the locations have always been unfailingly mellow and polite and nonjudgmental. It takes a special patient person to deal with tourists all day, and they do it well.

Yelp
I had a terrible experience here on Wednesday, October 6, 2021. The guy working there at 10:30am was such a jerk. Did he want me to rent at this business or not? Hard to say. Let me preface by saying I am a large woman, excellent swimmer, over 50, used to play water polo, grew up near the beach, comfortable in the water. Guy working there is flat affect unfriendly and seems he wishes he didn't have to talk to me from the get go. I had my little 10 pound poodle with me who sometimes kayaks with me already in her life jacket. The guy barely wants to have anything to do with me. I ask if it's ok for my dog to go. He says yes has she gone before? I tell him yes. He treats me like an idiot. Tells me if I have the dog I can't go beyond the right hand rocks, the left hand rocks, around the corner or too far out. I'm like - so I can't go...anywhere? He never smiles, never friendly, just treats me like an idiot, like he's bored with his job and his life. Wow. But I'm stuck. I only have a couple hours and I've been wanting to go so I choose to go. So I say what if I don't take the dog? What if I leave the dog with my partner on the beach. He looks me up a down and says I STILL have to limit where I go. What the? The water is not rough. There are people kayaking straight out as far as the eyes can see. I'm okay with safety restrictions. I get that. This guy seems like he was hating on me, gotta be honest. Womanphobic? Fatphobic? Poodlephobic? When I get back to the beach after essentially going NOWHERE (my old dog just loves floating on the water, so she's good) I bring the boat back to the beach and this guy does NOTHING to assist me, engage, nothing. It's like I don't exist. I don't know where or who the owner is. Maybe they are a great person. But what happened to me here was so wrong.

Yelp
Boyfriend wanted to go bike riding on our mini getaway. Found this place conveniently located at Lover's Point with a beach, picnic /bbq area, volleyball court, pool and a cash only food shack. The staff was very helpful and prices were very reasonable. When you arrive, you have to fill out a liability form and put a card on file for incidentals, however it will not get charged until you return you return and can choose to pay with cash or a different card. They offer kayak, bikes, paddle board and surreys rentals (golf cart looking bikes). We rented two cruiser bikes and came back around hour and a half later but the friendly staff only charged us $10 for one hour per bike. Bikes were well maintained and got the job done. Overall, very satisfied and would recommend renting from here!
google avatar

Miguel G.

Yelp
Kayak Instructor was wearing very thin cotton mask that kept slipping off, it would be better if the employees could wear proper masks as did you get very close to the customers when loading them into the kayak

Yelp
We rented 4 e-bikes for four hours. The two stars belong to their helpful staff, the lady (Claire?) checking everyone in and the gentleman (Michael?) that was able to deliver us a replacement e-bike. A quarter of a mile after leaving check-in, the rear derailleur broke on my son's bike. We waited close to 40 minutes to get a replacement which was not a problem at all. The problem I have is with the two e-bikes that we were given. Broken derailleur on one and disc brake stopping power not sufficient on another. Maybe their e-bikes are due for some serious tune up or QA check all their bikes to make its safe for the customers. So make sure you inspect the bike before leaving for your ride. The other problem was with the manager, Frank, after I called to explain what happened to the bike. He said there was nothing he can do and had the nerve to blame my son for the broken derailleur. He also said I was lucky he's not charging me for the repair! Really?! The bikes you are renting out risked the safety of my son and that is all you can say?! No apologies from him (only ones to apologize for the faulty bike were his staff) and made no effort to fix the bad experience to satisfy a customer. Needless to say, I will not come back to rent from place again and will try another company to rent bikes from next time we are in Monterey.

Yelp
Spent many weekends on the beach here in the protected cove. Did a lot of scuba diving in the calm waters here. And rented the Surrey bikes many times to ride the trails along the beach. A very relaxing place to spend the weekend. Lots of friendly people here too.
google avatar

Doll F.

Yelp
Fantastic starting point for a bike rental. The guys set us up and helped us with our every need. Make sure to arrive early so you can fill out all of the paperwork required.
google avatar

John E.

Yelp
We rented a sea kayak for two and had a wonderful time paddling along the coastline. We saw cormorants diving for fish, sea lions watching us with caution and sea otters taking naps on their backs in the kelp beds....all within an hour. Corey & Gretchen were nice, patient and helpful. A must do while in Monterey! Loved it.
google avatar

Happy O.

Yelp
We had an amazing time with our rentals, will definitely be going back. We had the opportunity to see amazing views right by the coast. The bikes are well maintained. Their prices are very fair. We had a blast!!!!!!
google avatar

Kathryn C.

Yelp
I had a great experience renting a bike here! It was very conveniently located near our hotel and the bike path, and the very kind operator carried my cruiser bike up the stairs even though he had a boot on his injured foot. He gave me great tips on where to go and made sure my seat was adjusted correctly. After I turned the bike in, I noticed they had electric bikes. I plan to rent one of those next time so I don't slow down my husband and can go further! This is an amazing area to bike in. Do it!!!

PW P.

Yelp
excellent. staff calm, knowledgeable, helpful, friendly. took the surrey bikes out and really enjoyed it. with more time would have taken a kayak too - gentle beach entry, calm waters. worked well with beach-goers. definitely 5 stars.
google avatar

Espie M.

Yelp
Great deal for kayak rentals. $35 allows use for the entire day. We went out for a few hours, came back had lunch and went back out for a couple more hours. We saw some otters, sea lions and tones of jellyfish. An activity that's a must while visiting the area. No experience necessary, I have experience but they give you a quick tutorial before you head out. Sturdy crafts too!
google avatar

Susan D.

Yelp
We had a great experience renting bikes for the day. The bikes were clean and worked well. The beachcruisers have gears which was nice even though there were no real hills where we rode. Workers at drop off and pick up were friendly and helpful.

Ruth T.

Yelp
Place is a small slice of heaven on earth. Rich is amazing and super patient. He actually cares about his customers and wants you to have a good, safe time. Kudos Rich! Thanks for being awesome! Low key area, totally recommend it.
google avatar

Liliana B.

Yelp
My first time on an electric bike and I loved it! Michael gave perfect instructions and tips and he carried the bike up and down the steps for me. My husband and I enjoyed our 3 hour ride along the coast. We'll definitely do this again for sure!
google avatar

Liubov V.

Yelp
Adventures By The Sea definitely implemented my ability to explore and learn about Monterey and wildlife of the area. I took advantage of pretty much all options of activities and enjoyed it a lot. Thumbs up to Michael for the kayak tour and other great employees including another location for hospitality and great suggestions.
google avatar

Jenn H.

Yelp
The two guys that were running this place were super nice. I wished I remember their names. We rented the 4 wheel bike where you can put your kid in the front of you. Our 20 month hated it! We had to turn back around and bring her back and they gave us sunblock and beach toys to calm her down at the beach. Super kind and understanding people. Great business practice. Would recommend to anyone wanted to rent bikes or beach gears.
google avatar

Casey S.

Yelp
When it comes to bikes, it's all about location, location, location. Nobody wants to be situated in the middle of god-knows-where when there are paths to ride. Adventures by the Sea knows this rule, and has taken it to heart. Sure, the bikes are sound, but they are literally right next to a path that stretches from Lover's Point to Sand City. Plus, with rentals at the Anton Inn and hourly pricing available, this place is most certainly flexible. You gotta love convenience.
google avatar

Brandon C.

Yelp
We picked up our kayaks at the Lovers Point location in Pacific Grove. We booked online, which was easy and guaranteed our time for the busy weekend. They have everything you need, including dry suits, which is great when your bottom is in water the whole time. The staff was friendly and helpful and genuinely concerned that we have a great time. The price of $30 per kayak for essentially the whole day if you want is great. Would definitely go back.

MarBon V.

Yelp
Had a great time paddle boarding at this scenic area. The only thing that was wrong about it was customer service. Had an encounter with this employee Cori who argued with us that because my sister didn't check back in with him, even though they returned their boards, that he will charge an extra hour. I'm not gona talk about the unprofessionalism of Cori who claims to be the manager, which is even worse but bottom line was, the manager Cori had poor customer service skills to deal with his customers. He was rude and dealing with him was not a good experience to end my paddle board adventure.
google avatar

PJ C.

Yelp
We rented two bikes for a full day from the Pacific Grove location near Lovers Point. This was a convenient location to our hotel. The gent was very helpful and the checkout process was not too painful or slow but we were there when they opened at 9am. The bikes were in decent shape though a bit worn out. Not atypical for a rental place. The bike paths in this area are great and this is a fun thing to do.

Marc H.

Yelp
Guided tour was a blast! The e bikes were great and fun to ride. Our guide Michael was super passionate about the wildlife and habitat. We saw a whale breach, otters, seals and of course "stupid" deer, lol. That along with great information on some history of stops and plant/tree varieties. The bikes were a great way to go and not worry about parking and such on a busy Sunday afternoon.
google avatar

Stephanie H.

Yelp
Had a beautiful afternoon on the water with our guide Joe. Sea otters, harbor seals and a history of the Monterey Bay. Will definitely do this again!
google avatar

DH K.

Yelp
Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Rates are a solid value. Fast, easy service. Would definitely rent kayaks again. Pacific Grove / Lover's Point location is the easiest and most convenient with the shortest wait time. Lover's Point is the perfect place for the novice. Water is always calm and lots of marine life to see!!!

Mattie D.

Yelp
Michael and the crew out of the Lovers Point location are first rate. Funny, personable and very professional. Prices are better than reasonable with equipment in excellent condition. We rented kayaks one day and returned the day following for bikes. Can't wait to do so again upon our next return visit. Cheers!
google avatar

Valerie M.

Yelp
Don't come here at 4:30 pm they will tell you they are closing even when they say 6 pm.
google avatar

Tom A.

Yelp
Lovers Point is a great place to enter the water with a kayak rented from theses guys. Good decent boats with spray jacket, pants, life jacket included in the price. $30 for 3 hours. Go early 9am and no wait. Calmer water and little swells no to mention wild life in abundance especially spring season.
google avatar

Dana K.

Yelp
Excellent service and very affordable price!!! $8/hr bike rentals. Beautiful scenery and close to 17 mile drive.

Emma N.

Yelp
great location, cute kayaks, they let us use waterproof clothes and a dry bag for free. lots of cute otters and seals. amazing experience.

Harmanie R.

Yelp
We had Michael as our tour guide for a 2 hour guided kayaking tour!! He was great!! It was our first time kayaking and he was patient, knowledgeable of the area and just really easy and fun to take the tour with. We will definitely come back.
google avatar

Nicole G.

Yelp
Rented biked for the day and rode along the Pacific coast. Great customer service decent bikes. We def will be renting from here again. Near the bike rental shop is a great little Sandy beach little area it was busy with people very calm. The customer service at the shop was great as well can't wait to be back.
google avatar

Babak A.

Yelp
Great service and staff. Kayaks were in great shape and the staff was very clear on instructions. Will go back again. Paid in advance to reserve and it worked out great. Thanks

Yelp
We wanted to rent a small surrey but it was out. We ended it up renting a two seater bike. We biked from lovers point park to cannery row and went back in about an hour. The scenery and experience was great. The only thing with our bike was the gear. Our bike was super loud the entire time . Which might be good as we did not need to ring the bell at all.... Natural alarm system built in the gears.... Other than that, it was great. We would love to try the surrey next time we are back
google avatar

Melissa E.

Yelp
Strictly for the Surrey rentals (4-wheel bikes) Honestly, so much fun for a large group. We ended up getting 2 small surrey's and 1 large one for our party for an hour. We biked from Lover's Point down to the wharf and back up. Everyone was laughing and having a good time during the entire ride. The guy who we spoke to was really nice about setting us up, and letting us know that it typically takes an hour to get to the wharf and back. The price is fair, and even offered to let us rent 2 small surrey's for the price of 1 large since they didn't have 2 larges available. Overall, a very fun experience.
google avatar

Bracha H.

Yelp
Wonderful rental experience with Adventures By The Sea at Lover's Point. Beautiful natural sights along the way of biking trial about one hour round trip. Our kids enjoyed it very much and will definitely come again!
google avatar

qirk z.

Yelp
Cool, they have surreys. What's a "surrey"... it's a pedal operated 'car'. You know, add a steering wheel to a four-wheeled bike, add some seats, a canopy, bell, basket and you've got a surrey. $18/hr for a Small (2-person) or $28/hr for Large (4-person). If you rent from this location, you can make it down to Lover's Point, stop for a few, then ride over to the Wharf, and back to the location in an hour. The place also rents kayaks, bikes, etc.

Deni C.

Yelp
Best experience this weekend was our bike ride to Pebble Beach on the e-bikes from here. We stopped by on a whim and Michael immediately welcomed us. He was friendly and professional while he explained how to use the bikes for the first time. The bikes were so much fun and made the 20 mile round trip ride a breeze. Thank you for the highlight of our weekend.

Tim B.

Yelp
In Pacific Grove for the first time? Adventures By the Sea provides a hassle-free way to get your outdoors on. We walked in on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon, and were able to rent kayaks for 2 hours without issue (other patrons were scoring electric bikes, SUP's, and surreys on-demand). The pricing seemed quite affordable ($30 for two hours, $20 for 1 hour in a kayak), and I would envision cost and availability would be at more of a premium closer to cannery row (although don't quote me on that!). Our paddle out was easy enough - smooth transition from the shallows allowing the rider to get positioned on the beach before letting the gentle tide take you into paddling depth). Once in the bay, we were able to cruise over waves, atop kelp forests, and finally over to the sea otters and seals that were awaiting us (FYI - the seals tend to pop up next to you, so be prepared for a surprise huff and snort from the cute little buggers)... Super chill paddle, especially as I was a bit uneasy about getting into open water in "sharktober"! Fine fun, and would totally recommend this outfitter.

S F.

Yelp
Funnest thing we did on our recent trip to Monterey was renting bikes and biking down 17 Mile Drive. Pretty easy and safe ride. Way funner biking it than driving it so you can slow down and appreciate the views.
