Yelp
Paia Fish Market in Lahaina was perfect fast-casual dining for our family of eight. I recommend this restaurant for groups of all sizes if you're looking for an easy, fresh, and delicious meal in Lahaina. This small Hawaiian chain is run like a well-oiled machine. We liked this place so much that we visited the original Paia Fish Market location in Paia a few days later: https://www.yelp.com/biz/paia-fish-market-paia-4.
This Paia Fish Market location opened in August 2016 on Lahaina's popular and touristy Front Street. It's across the street from the historic banyan tree. We were able to find free street parking on Front Street, right in front of the tree. Parking is also available in a public lot behind the restaurant.
At the time of writing this review, there are four locations: three on Maui (Lahaina, Paia, Kihei) and one on Oahu (Waikiki). Unlike Paia's other locations, this one in Lahaina is the only one that has its own dedicated freestanding building. Its interior dining room and outdoor covered patio are both fairly spacious. The setup is fast-casual. Servers deliver orders to tables.
This location is bigger than the original location in Paia. Both locations are busy, but I think it's easier to find a table here with much less of a wait.
All of the food and drink we've had from Paia Fish Market has been good to great. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I'd say the way to go are the Fresh Catch Plates. We've also found the Fish Soft Tacos, Clam Chowder, and Deep Fried Calamari to be tasty as well. The Fresh Catch Plates include a fish and two sides, one side being coleslaw. The plates come in lunch (6 oz) and dinner (8 oz) sizes. We ordered a mix of both lunch and dinner plates and couldn't tell much of a difference, portion-wise. The noticeable difference was in the shape of the plates - circular for lunch portions and oval for dinner portions. Either way, the Fresh Catch Plates provided a substantial, filling amount of high-quality food.
Paia Fish Market's Fresh Catch Plates are sold at market price. The market prices are shown on a blackboard at the counter. During our visit, there were six types of fish available: mahi-mahi, ono, ahi (yellowfin tuna), opah (moonfish), salmon, and opakapaka (Hawaiian snapper). Market prices for dinner portions ranged from $23.95 for mahi-mahi and ono to $28.95 for opah.
Between the eight of us, we tried quite a bit of the menu including most of the fish. The standout favorite among the group was the opakapaka (Hawaiian snapper), sauteed. The restaurant gives you four options for preparation method: charbroiled, sauteed, Cajun style, and blackened. The preparation method you choose can make a big difference in the taste and enjoyment of each fish. Sauteed is the way to go with the opakapaka. Paia Fish market sautes their fish in butter, garlic, wine, and lemon. Their sauteed opakapaka was just so good. Perfect texture, amazing flavor. Fresh, flavorful, mouthwatering. It was our main motivator to return later in the week.
While some of the other types of fish, like the mahi-mahi and ono, were good, they weren't as *great* as the opakapaka. Part of it had to do with the preparation style. For example, the cashier here suggested the ono blackened. I actually wasn't a huge fan of this. I think they overcooked the ono a bit (take a look at the picture I posted with this review) and therefore, dried it out and made the meat tougher. The tartar sauce made it better, but it still couldn't hold a candle to the sauteed opakapaka.
Another favorite among our group at this Paia Fish Market location was the Deep Fried Calamari ($8.95). The fried calamari they serve here and other places on the island, like Down the Hatch nearby, isn't your run-of-the-mill skinny, curly calamari from the mainland (nothing wrong with it; it's yummy too). Instead, they serve thick sticks of calamari steak. Less rubbery, more meaty and satisfying. We had the Deep Fried Shrimp ($8.95) too. Both the calamari and shrimp came with tartar sauce, ketchup, and lemon. Paia Fish Market's tartar sauce tasted wonderfully fresh and delightfully flavorful.
Another thing we really like about Paia Fish Market is their "Magic Sauce." It's a unique-tasting hot sauce that, to me, tastes like a combination of Thai Mae Ploy Sweet Chili Sauce and a Southern American barbecue vinegar-based sauce, maybe with a hint of Worcestershire sauce. Anyway, it really enhances an already superb meal at Paia Fish Market, so you should try it. The restaurant sells bottles that you can take home.
Finally, we took advantage of some $6 Happy Hour (2-5pm) drinks. We got some of the Lilikoi Margaritas and a Moscow Mule. Regular Margaritas and Mai Tais were also part of the Happy Hour menu. The drinks did the trick. Outside of Happy Hour, they're $10 each.
Service was excellent. All of the staff was friendly and polite, from the cashier to the food runners. And all of our orders came out reasonably fast. Win.
