9 New, Beautiful Bed and Breakfasts in the U.S. - AFAR

"Set in an 1881 brothel turned saloon in Albuquerque’s Historic Wells Park, this allegedly haunted four-room inn embraces its Wild West and ghostly lore with chile ristras, vintage photographs and owner Jesse Herron’s self-described “ghostly flair” (including painted animal skulls). The property swaps traditional breakfast for beer at the Ghost Light Saloon, a trolley-car taproom that brews movie-inspired beers like the watermelon wheat “Danny’s Not Here, Mrs. Torrance,” an homage to The Shining." - Matt Kirouac

About as far from “the same old thing” as a bed & breakfast can get. Seriously authentic “Old Wild West” rooms with period antiques and historical elements, along with state-of-the-art features like a fully functional and comfortable kitchen and great full-featured TV. The bed is cozy; easy chair, sofa and other furnishings are comfortable; and the room is surprisingly big and wonderfully designed. There’s a cool renovated trolly decked out with witty spooky stuff to be a bar called Ghost Light Saloon — guests get one free drink a night of their excellent craft beers or other drinks. The bartender was the magician and entertainer Jordan Jonas who gave us an impromptu performance—intriguing, original, witty and fun.

The Painted Lady Bed & Brew is a one-of-a-kind vintage lodging experience that beautifully captures the charm and character of its historic setting. Each room is thoughtfully designed with period-inspired décor, showcasing meticulous attention to detail. Be sure to stop by the Trolley for Hoppy Hour, where Jesse serves his exceptional home-brewed craft beer—a true local treasure. On weekends, his craft brewery opens to the public, so even if you’re not staying overnight, it’s well worth a visit to enjoy his brews and experience The Painted Lady.

Did the haunted trolley tour, which began at Painted Lady. The tour was lots of fun. We had a beer at the trolley. Staff and patrons alike were friendly and nice. I loved the space and the vibe. While dong the tour, my new Apple watch came off without my noticing it. Jesse at Painted Lady called the trolley driver and checked with staff. No luck. A few hours later a staff member found it in the parking lot lot and I got an immediate message that it had been found. I so appreciated the wonderful experience with this establishment. I will be back!!

can’t say enough good things about The Painted Lady Bed and Brew! From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with warmth and genuine hospitality. The historic charm of the house blends beautifully with the modern touches, making it both comfortable and unique. Our room was spotless, cozy, and full of character—clearly cared for with attention to detail. The “bed and brew” concept is such a fun twist. The location is perfect, close to great restaurants and shops, but still quiet enough to feel like a retreat. What really sets The Painted Lady apart, though, is the people. The hosts go above and beyond to make sure you feel at home. If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind stay that combines history, comfort, and a little bit of local flavor, this is the spot. We’ll definitely be back!

Google
5-stars because it has all the little touches that made our stay comfortable. We stayed in the Lizzie room which has a separate bedroom so someone could watch TV on the comfortable couch/chair in the living room without disturbing someone in the bedroom. It had more than one mirror and it was actually clean under the bed! It had a throw rug on each side of the bed so you could wipe your feet before getting into bed, and there was a private little patio off the bedroom. Other details: hairdryer, shampoo/conditioner/soap, makeup towel, tissues, dishwasher with detergent, adjustable climate control in each room, recycling (which was a first for us in New Mexico), well stocked kitchen with some oils for cooking, paper towels, comfortable bed and good sheets, fun and interesting decor. Good location: 15 to 20 minute walk to breweries, restaurants and even the Old Town Plaza, and less than 15 minutes to airport. I would absolutely stay there again.

We had our Vow Renewal at the Painted Lady and honestly could not have chosen a more perfect venue. From the get go, Jesse was responsive and so helpful. We immediately felt taken care of and knew we were in the best of hands! The venue itself is fantastic! It was so easy to set up everything and Jesse and his team made sure everything went smoothly and they were so kind and wonderful to work with. Our guests loved the vibe and history of the Painted Lady and kept remarking how awesome everything was. Our guests particularly loved hanging out on the historic trolley car drinking the delicious beers and swapping ghost stories with our awesome bartender, Kate! We even got to rent and spend the night in the Charlie Suite which was spacious, clean and so comfortable! We truly could not recommend this place enough. Everyone should come here and we will definitely return soon!

This is such a wonderful alternative to big corporate hotels and soulless Airbnbs. The rooms are beautiful, with everything you need and the grounds are welcoming and relaxed, with plenty of inviting spots to sit outside. The streetcar bar is a delight, and I love the concept of “bed and brew,” with one free drink to kick off your stay. You won’t be right downtown, but I found the neighborhood to be charming and close enough by car to anywhere you want to go. If you enjoy a good walk and need some provisions, there’s a really good small supermarket called Lowes about half a mile up the road. In addition to the property being comfortable and lovely, the owner is so nice. I left some AirPods behind, and they were kind enough to keep an eye out and mail them to me when they turned up. I’d love to find a place like Painted Lady Bed and Brew in every town I travel to.

Google
We’ve been to the Painted Lady quite a few times, and I must say I’m never disappointed! From magic shows to ghost stories/presentations to just hanging out with family and friends, this place truly is the bee’s knees. Having been here before, I thought the Brickyard would be a nifty place for my baby shower, and it was perfect (especially for the theme). Jesse is such a down-to-earth and gracious host, so if you’re thinking about having an event here - do it! I highly recommend checking out this place because, in my opinion, it’s the best hidden gem in the city! Also, be sure to sign up for the BREWSletter as you’ll get updates on upcoming events you won’t want to miss. I’ll always think fondly of the Painted Lady and look forward to future events and any excuse to go visit this unique gem of an establishment!

Yelp
So excited to finally try this haunted bar/hotel. They host scary movie nights and it's Friday the 13th! Good selection of draft beer and perfect patio. Service was fast and they were very appreciative. Hidden new gem located!

Yelp
I had the most incredible stay here! It felt like I had my very own private getaway since there's usually no staff on the property during the day. With only four suites available, it really feels exclusive! I stayed in the Jessie suite, which was fantastic--two full-sized queen beds and a full kitchen that made it feel just like home. Jesse, the owner, and Kate, the bartender, were absolutely fantastic and added to the amazing experience! I can't wait to return! If you need a place to stay, THIS is where you want to be!

Yelp
Room decorations and amenities couldn't have been better. Had a great Hoppy hour 3nites. Jessie was full of neat ideas of what to do in Albuquerque and super knowledgeable about beer selections. Best vacation stay in years!

Yelp
What a cool hidden gem. The patio has shady trees and beautiful sting lights. The trolly is converted into a bar with comfy seats. Staff of Jesse and Courtney were so friendly and fun. Make free reservation on their website. Our group of 4 had so much fun. Check out this really cool spot!

Yelp
Awesome place, owner is very friendly and super helpful, great atmosphere and value. We were there for ghost stories night and it was so fun. Lots of cool history in this place. Highly recommended!

Yelp
The cutest find! 3 rooms to the joint. Private parking available. Owner, Jesse, is very nice and makes great recommendations for local fun! Not your average B&B as it is Bed and Brew. Delicious local beers at happy hour apart of the total price. Rooms are modern and spacious with full kitchens. Dog friendly! Common space with fire pit included.

Yelp
If you haven't yet experienced the Painted Lady Bed and Brew, you NEED to get involved! They have some incredible events scheduled this late Summer-through-Fall that include open mic ghost stories (which my friends and I went to last Friday night), scary movie BINGO (where you watch a movie in their secret garden outdoor patio and mark squares on your card when certain things happen in the movie (showing films like The Shining, Lost Boys, etc). They continually roll out new brews and their newest one: "Danny's Not Here Right Now, Mrs. Torrence" (a tantalizing watermelon wheat beer) was cleverly named after a famous line in The Shining and is absolutely delicious! Their patio is gorgeous and the property and buildings from this former bordello boast an impressive history. Owner, Jesse, even renovated one of Albuquerque's last trolley cars and turned it into a bar. The details are exquisite, the beer is cold, and the hospitality is warm. Grab some friends and party under the stars! Follow them on Instagram to stay up on all their events @paintedladyabq.

Yelp
This Bed and Brew is right in old town and is absolutely charming with a eclectic history. Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting a unique stay in Albuquerque

Yelp
Stay. Here! Or don't, and miss out on a great experience a mile away from Old Town ABQ. You will be staying in a quaint former brothel. By quaint, I don't mean tacky Old West decor, but tasteful, historic touches. Jesse and Trissy treated like friends and the trolley time happy hour can't be missed. There was a great selection for the beer, cider, and seltzer drinker. I'll definitely stay again! Safe, quiet, gated entry that takes you to your private little world.

Yelp
This place is unexpectedly beautiful. The host has created a unique, historic, and comforting place to decompress. Everything was clean, comfortable and plenty of amenities to make our stay great. (Plus a fantastic court yard.) The Hoppy Hour was a great treat - excellent beer and a host who was sociable and helpful at giving us local Albuquerque options. We didn't run in to any ghosts or bumps in the night (which I suppose could be good or bad) but the room was adorn with history. It definitely gave us the sense of the era. Everything about it was perfection!

Yelp
My husband and I stayed at The Painted Lady Bed & Brew and loved it! We stayed in The Lizzie Suite - very cool room! It was immaculate and has a great kitchenette with fridge, microwave, coffee maker, dishes, utensils, glasses - everything you need. Nice sized sitting area with tv, very comfy bed and the bathroom was awesome. The best part was how uniquely the room was decorated and all of the little details. We also loved the grounds outside --- it has different sitting areas that were also unique and fun. We went to the Hoppy Hour on the trolley -- which is a custom bar/lounge built inside an old trolley by Jesse, the owner of The Painted Lady. It is so cool!! We were blown away by how creative Jesse is. We had our free beer and a couple more (all local beers) and a delightful time talking to Jesse and his girlfriend, which enhanced the experience. Afterwards we explored the neighborhood and its many craft breweries and swanky neighborhood lounges (couldn't pass up premium craft cocktails!). You truly are doing yourself a disservice if you do not experience the The Painted Lady and everything she has to offer when you visit Albuquerque. Due to time constraints we could only stay one night but we will be returning as soon as we can and bringing friends!
